Chapter 12: The True Enemy

On the World Map

To liberate the people of the Western Isles once and for all, Roy headed for Djuto, the Isles’ largest city. The Etrurian capital was located there.

Lord Arcard, the supervisor of the mining operation on the Isles, resided in Djuto. According to Elphin, Arcard was of high birth, but he held no importance in the Etrurian court.

Roy was still worried about Etruria’s response to his attacking the capital, but he had no choice if he was going to rescue the people.

Opening Cutscene

Arcard:
“L-L-… Lieutenant Flaer!”

Flaer:
“Ah, Lord Arcard. Why do you fret so?”

Arcard:
“It’s the Lycia Alliance Army! They are approaching here to take my head!”

Flaer:
“Oh, them. Yes, they have been somewhat of a nuisance to Bern… We figured that it would be difficult if they became friendly with Etruria, so we had you send them off to these isles… Well, they fight better than I had anticipated.”

Arcard:
“Why are you so calm!? Have you any idea how much I have lost because of them? All the riches I have earned on these islands… N-No! More important is my life! My life is in danger! If the Alliance Army reaches here, I will be done for! What must I do!?”

Flaer:
“If you’re that worried, you should leave this capital to us and escape back to Etruria.”

Arcard:
“Are you sure?”

Flaer:
“Warfare is what we of Bern excel at. We also have one of our…secret weapons at hand. Do not worry, we shall kill off the Lycia Alliance once and for all.”

Arcard:
“But…”

Flaer:
“Lord Arcard. If Bern and Etruria join forces, we will have nothing on this continent to fear. Nothing at all. Isn’t that so?”

Arcard:
“Yes… Yes! You’re right. Then I shall ask for your assistance.”

(Arcard leaves)

Flaer:
“Hmph, such gutless cowards, those Etrurians are. But if we can get rid of the Alliance Army here, these isles shall be ours forever…”

(Scene switches to Roy)

(If you came through Ch 10A and 11A)

Roy:
“This is the capital… Once we take it down, we can go home.”

Elphin:
“Master Roy, I have heard some strange rumors from the people living around here. They say that a ‘human not human’ resides in this castle.”

Roy:
“What does that mean?”

Elphin:
“They say that he changes form…into a Dragon.”

Roy:
“A human? Turning into a Dragon!?”

Elphin:
“I don’t believe it myself, but that is what the villagers say. We must proceed with caution.”

(If you came through Ch 10B and 11B)

Roy:
“This is the capital… Once we take it down, we can go home.”

Elphin:
“I have sent someone in to unlock the gate… Oh, there she is.”

(Lalam appears)

Roy:
“The one over there, dressed like a dancer?”

Elphin:
“Yes.”

Lalam:
“Your Majesty! Over here!”

Roy:
“Your Majesty…?”

Elphin:
“…I know not what she speaks of.”

Lalam:
“Your Majesty! You’re late.”

Elphin:
“Lalam, who is ‘Your Majesty’?”

Lalam:
“? …Oh! Ah…er… You know, you look so much like a prince, so I gave you a nickname.”

Elphin:
“……”

Roy:
“……”

Elphin:
“My apologies, Master Roy. This is Lalam, a member of the rebel forces.”

Lalam:
“You’re Roy? Everyone on the Isles is talking about you! They call you the ‘Savior from the East.'”

(Lalam jumps onto Roy)

Lalam:
“Nice to meet you, I’m Lalam!”

Roy: (jumps back)
“Whoa! P-Please leave a little distance!”

Lalam:
“Roy, your face is all red! How cute!”

Elphin:
“…Lalam…”

Lalam: (stepping back)
“Oh! R-Right… I’ve been hearing some strange rumors. The people here say that there’s a ‘human not human’ in this castle.”

Roy:
“A human not human…?”

Lalam:
“Yes. They say he changes form into a creature nobody has ever seen before. Some said it looked like one of the legendary Dragons!”

Roy:
“A human? Turning into a Dragon!?”

Lalam:
“I don’t know… But maybe.”

Elphin:
“We must proceed with caution.”

1st Turn

Flaer:
“Ah, there you are, Aine.”

Aine:
“I heard you called…”

Flaer:
“I will go report to General Narshen regarding the Lycia Allliacne Army. I want you to defend this castle while I am away.”

Aine:
“…Understood.”

Flaer:
“? Who’s there! …… …Just the wind. Well then, I will be off. I shall leave the rest to you.”

Aine:
“…Understood.”

Flaer:
“Hahaha… The Alliance Army won’t stand a chance against this Dragon. They won’t even be able to scratch it with they puny weapons. Mamkutes… They certainly are terrifying beasts.”

(Ray is hiding nearby)

Ray:
“…So that’s what the ‘human not human’ is. It was true that Bern had resurrected the Dragons. What can I do now… I suppose I’ll pretend to be one the soldiers and observe the Dragon’s power.”

(Ray stations himself as an enemy unit)

7th Turn

(Cath appears)

Cath:
“All the way down here in the isles in the west, people working to death for the nobles in their nest!”
(Note: In the Japanese text she’s supposed to be singing, so I translated it as best I could…)

Cath:
“Well, if that’s true, this castle must be loaded with treasure. It’s not like the nobles rightfully earned it anyway, so I guess I’ll have to take it all away from them!”

(Cath starts to move around the map to loot the treasure chests)

10th Turn

Soldier:
“The reinforcements from the south will arrive shortly!”

Aine:
“……”

Soldier:
“…Th-That’s all, sir.”

(Aine leaves)

Soldier:
“That guy scares me…”

20th Turn

Elite Soldier:
“Did you take care of the cave?”

Soldier:
“Yes, sir, we hired some bandits to block the entrance. No one will be able to get the Divine Weapon now.”

Elite Soldier:
“Great! Now all we have to do is get rid of the Lycia Alliance Army!”

(Note: Once you see this scene, you won’t be able to go to Ch 12 Gaiden.)

Conversation (Lugh, Ray)

Lugh:
“Ray? Ray! It is you! I’m so glad to see you again!”

Ray:
“Lugh…! What are you doing here?”

Lugh:
“I’m glad you look okay. We were worried, you know. You just disappeared that night, leaving a note that said, ‘I’m going on a journey to train my magic.'”

Ray:
“I wouldn’t be able to effectively learn magic sitting in that orphanage. It was a miracle that I could learn what I did.”

Lugh:
“Ray… The orphanage is gone.”

Ray:
“? What happened?”

Lugh:
“Bern’s forces came and…burned it down.”

Ray:
“…What happened to everybody?”

Lugh:
“Father was killed protecting us… The little kids are under the protection of the Elimine Church.”

Ray:
“…I see. Good… They’ll be happier living at the church instead of in an old orphanage.”

Lugh:
“…You don’t have to put it that way.”

Ray:
“……”

Lugh:
“Ray! Come with us. Let’s defeat Bern and pick up the little kids!”

Ray:
“I don’t find interest in such things.”

Lugh:
“But!”

Ray:
“Still… The Lycia Alliance Army might not be a bad place to be. They seem to have some kind of connection with the Dragons… So, if you insist, I suppose I can go with you.”

Lugh:
“Ray…”

Ray:
“I-I hope you understand! I’m not joining to avenge Father or the orphanage or anything!”

Lugh:
“Yeah! I know, Ray.”

Ray:
“So don’t look at me like that!”

(Ray joins)

Conversation (Roy, Cath)

Roy:
“Oh! You’re…”

Cath:
“Hm? …You again? Why are you always screwing up my plans? Do you have something against me?”

Roy:
“No! I just…wanted to apologize.”

Cath:
“…Excuse me?”

Roy:
“The last time we met, I said some pretty harsh things. Like calling you a villain when I didn’t know the things you had gone through…”

Cath:
“Oh, that? It’s okay. It’s not really bothering me.”

Roy:
“But I still think that what you’re doing isn’t right.”

Cath:
“You’ve really got nerve to say that, haven’t you?”

Roy:
“So… Would you give me chance?”

Cath:
“A chance?”

Roy:
“Once this war ends, I’ll promise to rebuild the trampled villages. I’ll promise to make proper use of the taxes that the villagers pay. So until then, I’d like you to stop stealing.”

Cath:
“…And when would that be?”

Roy:
“Whenever this war ends. I can’t say exactly when…”

Cath:
“You expect me to wait patiently until then?”

Roy:
“Yes. Would that be okay?”

Cath:
“Why?
Why do you tell me this? Why do you try so hard to help someone like me? You should just leave a burglar like me alone.”

Roy:
“Without you, we wouldn’t have been able to escape from Wagner’s castle. Though you probably weren’t trying to help us, you ended up saving our lives. I’m not going to just leave our benefactor alone.”

Cath:
“Well, at the rate you’re going, it looks like you’ll be getting in my way no matter where I go.”

Roy:
“As long as you appear in our path.”

Cath:
“All right, you win. I’ll stop coming to battlefields to steal.”

Roy:
“Really? Thanks for understanding.”

Cath:
“But, you have to let me go along with you.”

Roy:
“?”

Cath:
“Actions speak louder than words. I have to see whether you’re going to be true to your words or not.”

Roy:
“All right!”

(Cath joins)

Battle with Aine

Aine:
“…Burn.”

Defeating Aine

Aine:
“…What…!”

After Beating the Map

Roy:
“That was close… So this is the power of a Dragon…”

Elphin:
“A human not human… This is what the villagers were talking about.”

Roy:
“How many more of these does Bern have…? How are we supposed to stand a chance against monsters like this!?”

Elphin:
“Master Roy! Please calm yourself.”

Roy:
“Oh…”

Elphin:
“…I understand your worries. But if you start to panic, so will everyone else in our army. Please understand that.”

Roy:
“…I’m sorry.”

Elphin:
“No, it is perfectly understandable to worry after fighting something like that. …Now… One thing is clear.”

Roy:
“What is that…?”

Elphin:
“Do you remember the rumor I told you about Arcard being tied in with Bern?”

Roy:
“Oh! If there are Bern’s Dragons in the Etrurian capital…”

Elphin:
“Right. Arcard was indeed making contact with Bern.”

Roy:
“…That means Lycia might be in danger… We need to return to the mainland. We have to contact General Cecilia and think of a plan…”

(If you beat the map in 20 turns or less)

Elphin:
“Master Roy, there is one more thing we must do before returning to the mainland.”

Roy:
“Are there still more enemies?”

Elphin:
“No. One of the Divine Weapons is hidden in a cave near here. If we can find it, fighting the Dragons will become a little easier.”

Roy:
“Divine Weapons… Exactly! If we can get all eight of them, we have a chance at defeating Bern!”

Elphin:
“Yes… We must obtain as many as we can.”

Roy:
“All right, then let’s go to that cave!”

(If you beat the map in 21 turns or more)

(A Soldier appears)

Soldier:
“R-Report! I have a message from Etruria… A coup d’etat has broken out at the Etrurian castle city of Aquleia!”

Merlinus:
“What!”

Soldier:
“The initiators are Advisor Roartz and Lord Arcard. They have caputred King Mordred, and have announced their plan of dividing ownership of the world between Bern and Etruria!”

Merlinus:
“No… The two strongest nations in Elibe joining forces…”

Roy:
“Is General Cecilia all right!? And what about Princess Guinevere…”

Soldier:
“We do not have any accurate information… But we have word that the Three Etrurain Generals have been separated. Sorcery General Cecilia has escaped Aquleia and is headed for the Misul Peninsula in the west.”

Roy:
“What about the other Generals?”

Soldier:
“With King Mordred taken hostage, they have been forced to join the Revolutionaries.”

Merlinus:
“Master Roy…”

Roy:
“We need to contact General Cecilia… Princess Guinevere…General Cecilia… Please be safe…”
