Welcome to the Official Claim a Character Thread! Over here, you can claim characters that you like! Please make sure to follow these rules and steps, however.
Before you claim a character:

• Click the spoiler marked "Lists" and check if the character belongs to any of the lists. If yes, please go to the corresponding list and check if your character has been claimed already or not
• If the character is not part of any of the lists, please use the search function in the top-right corner of the page. Try to check alternate names (if any) in case you don't find the character. Keep in mind that the Search function only works for words that are at least four characters.
• You can also search for a keyword in the source material of your character. Especially if your character's name is less than four characters. Searching multiple different keywords separately would be a good idea.
• If the lack of relevant search hits convinces you that the character is indeed unclaimed, then you're free to go and claim the character. If you're still doubtful for whatever reason, please ask in the thread.
• If the character is a user of SerenesForest, you must have the user's permission to claim him/her first. You can also skip the searching then, since SF users usually know whether they've been claimed or not, and by whom.
• If your character has already been claimed, check the sharing section and the inactivity section.
Claiming a character:
• If the character is unclaimed, make a post declaring your claim on the character. Make it clear who you are claiming.
• It is necessary to mention the source material of the character you claim, to make it clear where your character is from and also to ease future searching.
• Please also mention alternate names of your character in the same post also to ease future searching.
• If you wish to claim multiple characters, please mention each and every single one of them. General claims like "all of the characters in..." will not be valid otherwise.
• Do not edit your posts to add claims. Check the editing posts section for details on how editing is dealt with.
Sharing a character:
• If the character is already claimed by somebody, it is possible for the character to be shared
• If the original claimer is still active, he/she must consent to the sharing of the character. Please consult the original claimer and request a share via profile comments, PMs, or by asking in this thread. The latter is not recommended if the original claimer does not often check the thread.
• If there are multiple people that are sharing a character, all of them must consent to sharing.
• If the permissions have been granted, please post in the thread that you are sharing the character. If possible, ask the original claimer to make the post instead.
• Once a character is shared, everyone sharing the character will have equal privileges on the character. Nobody is allowed to negate another person's share.
Inactivity:
• User inactivity is determined based on the amount of time that has passed since their Last Active date on their profile. If it is set to Private, then the amount of time since their last post (can be found in the Posts tab in their profile) will be considered.
• If the user was inactive for at least two months, then their consent will not be required for sharing.
• Other sharing rules apply (post in the thread, get permission from every active user that is also sharing, etc).
• The inactive user will be informed that their characters are being shared without their consent, but they cannot do anything to prevent it.
• If the user was inactive for at least six months, then other active users sharing the character may agree to negate the inactive user's share. In this case, the inactive user will be given a warning message and will have one week to defend their share in the thread. Failure to respond within a week will terminate their share.
• Regardless of whether the user successfully defends their share or not, if the same user is found to be six months inactive afterwards, then the user's shares can freely be negated (again, by the other active users sharing the same character) without any warning or opportunity to defend.
Releasing claims:
• Please post in the thread to declare that you are dropping your claim on a character.
• Please list down the names of all characters being dropped, if possible, for ease of searching.
• You can change your mind about dropping a character within 48 hours upon dropping. Your claim on the dropped character will be protected for 24 hours. After that, the dropped character can be claimed by others. If you undo the drop after the first 24 hours, then anybody that claimed the character before the undo will have to share the character with you, regardless of whether either of you like it or not.
• Beyond 48 hours, however, you will have to follow the normal sharing procedure, which requires the other users' permissions.
• If a person drops all claims without naming each of them, you can use the following link to track all their posts in the thread:

http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&cType=topic&cId=14982&search_author={USERNAME}
Simply replace {USERNAME} with the current name of the user whose posts you want to find. FYI this can also be used in other threads by replacing the 14982 with the topic ID.
General:
• These rules may be modified, and any suggestions for changes are welcome. Please don't try to exploit loopholes in these rules though.
• Obviously trollish claims will not be acknowledged.
• Please avoid leaking spoilers out of consideration for those who don't want to be spoiled. For details about handling spoilers, check the Handling Spoilers section.
• Do behave yourself in this thread. Please do not overreact negatively due to anything that involves the claiming/sharing of characters. Claiming is meant to be a fun and silly activity, so don't make a big deal out of it.
• Try to refrain from derailing this thread. This is not a general-purpose thread; it's for claiming characters and everything related to that. Derailing a little bit is fine, but please don't go too far and have big discussions on stuff unrelated to claims.
Editing Posts:
• If a post has been edited, then any claims in that post will be considered to be done from the last edit time, unless there is evidence that the claims have been made earlier.
• This evidence can be in the form of quotes. If a post quotes the claim itself, then the claim can be considered to take the timestamp of the quoting post, if this post is earlier than the last edit of the claiming post.
• If the quoting post is edited as well, then the timestamp considered for the quote is to be the last edit time as well.
• For dropping claims, the original timestamp is used regardless of edits.
• Editing is generally discouraged because even if you want to edit the last post, somebody might be watching the thread to note down updates for the list and may not detect the edit. And it's nice when people can recall that a certain character was claimed, in case of future inquiries. If you want to add claims, please make a new post. Double-posting is perfectly fine in this part of the forums.
Handling Spoilers:

Sometimes, a character's alternate name might be considered a spoiler. If you want to mention something which can be considered a spoiler, please ensure that the spoiler is properly concealed so that those who don't want to be spoiled don't have to be. There are mainly two ways of achieving this:

1. Using background+color tags. The format is as follows:

[background=black]spoiler text[/background]
The result is: spoiler text

Highlight the solid black section to read it. This technique is recommended for cases where only a small section of the sentence is spoilery, such as a spoilery character name. Furthermore, Ctrl+F searching will include results that are covered this way. Note that the color tag must be present, since different skins may have a different default text color. Colors other than black may be used, as long as both color+background tags are of the same color.

2. Using spoiler tags. The format is as follows:
spoiler text
The result is:
spoiler text

This technique causes line breaks, so it is not recommended to use this for parts of sentences. It is generally recommended to use this when there is a relatively large amount of text (regardless of whether they contain spoilers) to be posted, so that spoiler tags can reduce the space. Please note that the contents of a spoiler block will not show up in Ctrl+F searches unless the spoiler block is opened.

The forum search will obtain results from both types of spoiler methods. When using these tags, please make it clear why those tags are there. If it contains a spoilery character name, make sure the source material of the character is un-spoilered, so that we can decide for ourselves whether it's okay to check the spoiler or not. For spoiler tags, the spoiler description in the spoiler tag should mention the contents of the spoiler block.
The following lists should list down all of the claims on characters belonging to the lists, with listing the current users in possession of the characters. It is advised that you use Ctrl+F to locate your character within a list if you can't find it by quickly scanning.
