Gender-Bending Characters in Fire Emblem?

So, I was just curious, as I have seen one or two fanfics in which characters of the Fire Emblem world (mainly Fates and Awakening) are gender bent. It's not always all of the characters, either-for example, I've seen fics where characters such as Libra (Awakening) and Forrest (Fates), who many people mistook as girls, are the only gender-bent characters, for no reason other than some shipping purposes I suppose. I was curious if that was a popular thing done in fanfiction, or if its taboo or if people genuinely don't care. Thoughts?

It is a thing that happens in a number of fan works.

However, it is also usually done badly. If it is done well, my experience is that people don't really care, but it has to be sensibly justified (if it happens just because it happens, then people usually complain or forget that it even happens).
