I've only played Awakening to completion but I've dabbled in the other FE games and I'm currently playing through FE6. I'm looking foward to using this forum to discuss certain things about this game series I'm really intrested in with other members on this site. If you plan on playing more games to the end after FE6, I'd recommend FE8 as it's much more forgiving than the other games (Awakening is probably the easiest and FE8/Sacred Stones is second). So far my favorite character is Lugh because I simply like how he is considerate he is of others, like when he gives cakes to Chad in their C support conversation.
