What is your view on video game cheating?

I disapprove of it if it is something that puts othrr players at a disadvantage, i.e. Pokemon Go. If it is something that improves the experience for a single player campaign, I think it's fine. I recently played Platinum and in order to enjoy it more, I used AR in order to speed up the levelling up process for any monster I had just captured, saving up hours of time.

Cheating is unacceptable on a competitive enviroment where you're up against another player. If it's for your own enjoyment in a non-competitive game, go for it.

Pretty much my answer honestly.

I personally only use cheats in games that i've beaten before, but thats just me :P:

I think it's fine, as long as it doesn't try to ruin other players experiences (such as multiplayer or something).

Holy... I found a shiny Houndour with the Shiny code turned off. None of my friends will believe that was is legit.

I always do it for the sake of convenience regarding item acquisition but I prefer to beat the game honestly first, unless it's something meaningless like the code to have Tails follow you in Sonic Advance. I like being able to use cheats to tear games apart sometimes so it's really fun to use cheats on Fates to change your Avatar's class to one of the opposite sex. My Male Avatar was the best Maid.

Cheats can be fun because of ditties like that. Of course the modern gaming world frowns upon such things but so long as they're not bringing harm to other players, I see no problems.

Completely acceptable if not used in a competitive environment, I.E. Pokemon, Team Fortress, etc.

Of course this is kinda hypocritical of me because I used to hack on Minecraft servers all the time, but I was a different person back then

If it's a single player game, knock yourself out.

For Multiplayer, I'm only okay with it if all parties involved are aware and okay with it. So, back in the 90's when me and my sister wanted to whip out the Game Genie and get unlimited items and Skywalker on Super Mario Bros 3, no harm done, we both liked it.

If you're playing against anonymous players online, it's not okay, since there's no chance for the to consent to the cheating.

This, with the addendum that it's pretty lame when people hack in shinies in Pokemon and then trade them off.

Pretty much this.

I still laugh at how some commenters are on YouTube are so idiotic in their "anti-cheat" crusades when people are just having fun on single player that they end up sounding like the gaming police.

I'm a programmer. Games run on a computer. It's natural for me to want to manipulate it to do what I want.

I remember a Forum Stronghold Knights I frequented several years ago that was extremely anti-cheating. If you even exploited the enemy AI on single-player, they would lynch you. I remember sharing this on the site one day and was severely chastised for it. It wasn't even a hack or mod, just the dumb AI being manipulating. Other than that, it wasn't a bad community, bad sadly, it died out a while back.

Unacceptable, (almost) always.

Of course, this depends on your definition of "cheating" and whether the devs intended for a feature to be used. For example, included cheat codes like Valdez in Warcraft are fine, because they're basically dev easter eggs, and they deliberately included them for player enjoyment.

Glitches/exploits are a bit fuzzier and often depend on the severity of the glitch/exploit. For example, I have no problem with damage boosting, etc. in speedrun contexts, and other similar things. OOB in Metroid Prime otoh violates the spirit of the game entirely, and I frown upon it.

Because game developers are people too, and artistic vision should be respected.

This argument seems a little presumptuous. For instance I'm remembering the Symphony of the Night glitched-as-fuck speedrun that was played in front of the director and he appreciated it despite them breaking the game.

I guess I'm not seeing how cheating in a single player game is "disrespecting" artistic vision. In some cases it prevents frustration, in other cases it is just having more fun with a game.

Like I said, glitches are a lot fuzzier than say loading up your action replay and hacking on godmode or infinite money or whatever. You could probably also argue for exceptions on repeat playthroughs, but as far as I'm concerned the initial run (at very least) should be a pure "as intended" experience.

What about covering a song? Or, to not make this about any copyright issues, using a snippet from Mozart's Kleine Nachtmusik in a pop song? That's also not what the original composers intended, but it's not really frowned upon. Cheating in single player games just changes the gaming experience for that particular player and doesn't even affect anyone else.

That said, I personally try not to cheat at all, although I will occasionally use guides if I get stuck or on a second playthrough if I want to go (mild) completionist. If a game gets too hard or too grindy for me to get through, I rather tend to stop playing and maybe try again a few months later. But I really don't care at all if someone else pumps out all the god mode cheats - if they have fun doing that, it's fine.

I've actually read a somewhat interesting discussion about cheating in Pokemon PvP in another forum (although I don't play it myself). It was about RNG abuse to catch 'mons with perfect stats with the help of some kind of external device - one group very adamantly claimed that this would be totally legit because said device only reads but doesn't change anything in the game; the other group replied that of course that's cheating because the developers probably wanted the RNG to actually simulate random numbers but was divided in one part that didn't really see it as a problem and another one that felt that it would give the cheater a huge advantage in the actual fights.

€: Sorry, I didn't notice Balcerzak's answer in time. When talking about my personal gaming preferences, I agree with you, but I don't really see the problem if someone else prefers to, I dunno, blaze through FE6 with Percy and Milady joining in chapter 1 because they're only in for the story. It doesn't appeal to me (I mean, I could just watch a LP if I cba to use my brain), but why would I care?
