Making of Binding Blade (from Making of FE)

Full article

I've been working with Kirokan on this for a couple of weeks now and I'm happy to finally reveal it to the public.

This is an analysis of most of the FE6 development materials from the Making of Fire Emblem book. A lot of it you may have already seen before, but this time I've gone all out to uncover all the hidden gems I could.

Very interesting, thanks a lot for the translation and analysis. The lingering female Cavalier to Paladin whack promotion bonuses might be connected to that Aigir girl mentioned. Assuming she was an enemy you had to leave alive, perhaps she was very weak, and had terrible bases, which is why the female class promotion to Paladin has such high stat increases?

That weapon triangle seems like a massive "screw you" to lances, considering the large amount of axe-wielding enemies.

It's pretty much bad for everyone except axes which become OP. Swordies are usually fast enough double axe guys anyway, lances don't get a huge benefit out of "vantage" (enemy swordies usually have low str, weapons have low mt), and all axes suddenly become FE7!Luna on generals.

it would really help a lot of the slower sword guys such as noah and ogier

i think it would've been cool if sword users got FE4 pursuit, lance users got vantage, and axe users got some variant of colossus from WTA (because luna is too strong).

That weapon triangle is really cool!

Essentially, swords had Pursuit, lances had Continue and axes had Luna.

I wonder what they would've done for Anima/Light/Dark.

Maybe have them inflict a damaging status effect of some sort for Anima, cancel Res for Light, and silence for Dark?

Axes negating Defence seems a bit TOO good... halving Defence maybe, but not negating it entirely. I agree the sword bonus seems odd since Sword users are often fast enough to double anyway. (Maybe if you already doubled, you get a Brave effect? But how would that work with actual Brave weapons...)

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned the scrapped plot point of Roy becoming king of the Western Isles. That might have actually made me like him as a character. Not only that, it'd be a perfect excuse to move his promotion earlier in the story (though Ch 12 is a little early for a Lord forced promotion, my Roys are usually Lv 20 by that point anyway), so he didn't have that horrible late one he does in the final game. In short, that plot point would've fixed most of the problems I have with Roy. Oh well.

Also, escaping captivity to find his home in ruins. Maybe Eliwood was going to die instead of Hector, which would mean EVERY FE Lord loses their father at some point. (As it stands Roy is STILL the only FE Lord who's father is still alive by the end of their game)

And is it just me or is "The Winter General" one of the coolest chapter names I've ever heard. (Though it reminds me of The Winter Soldier now) The "fall of the first enemy general" described in the outline seems to indicate Narcien still had the same role he did in the final, but this "Winter General" doesn't sound like anyone in the final game, the closest there is to a major boss for Illia is Roratz, and he's not even from Bern. Maybe Brunya was originally fought here? (Heck, she even wields Fimbulvetr!) Would make sense seeing as the chapter between Zephiel and the Dragon Temple is abscent from this version.

I've also noticed less pre-promotes in the planning stages, but some of the non-promoted recruits seem placed a bit oddly. (An unpromoted Pegasus Knight in Chapter 17, were they going for a direct Est clone? THREE unpromoted Nomads? Unpromoted Archer in Chapter 15?)

At least I'm glad that "The Sword that Vanquishes Darkness" and the final chapter Sage are gone, they woud've made the game even MORE derivative or Akaneia.
