Depends on the game.

Games like Melty Blood, Probably Under Night In Birth, Persona 4 Arena, yes I would.

KoF, Street Fighter, and things of the like, not so much. (But sometimes)

Give me one fighting game with an actually good story.

Yeah, no. You can't. Literally the best one I can think of is Skullgirls.

So no, I don't.

Street Fighter (there is tons of supplementary material, comics etc). Blazblue. Guilty Gear. Fatal Fury. Melty Blood.

Skullgirls doesn't really have a concrete story, but it DOES have a history. The story itself is determinant on which character you choose. I think it's nice.

Blazblue has a pretty neat story. Luckily, borrowing Continuum Shift Extend already supplied me with Calamity Trigger's story... some parts of it. Chronophantasma just made the story way better, yet sadly waned into the near-end of the series.

The original Melty Blood and ReACT.

Isn't Melty Blood a part of Tsukihime or something? Meh, haven't played it, but I'm curious.

Marthipan bashes Mario's skull in before liberating Altea from Dolhr rule. Now that I have said it, it must be canon.

I'll admit there are certain endings/segments of DOA5's story that I find amusing, (and I'm a huge sucker for Aerosmith), but I still predominantly play it for the mechanics rather than anything else.

That said I still ended up going on flow chart mode in Soul Calibur, and like the overly cheesy/silly endings

Dragunov's TTT2, Gun Jack's TTT1, Paul's Tekken 5, Zack, Brad and Helena's DOA4 etc.

Also Chronicles of the Sowrd/Hut Burning simulator was great if that counts

If it has one, I'll check it out. But no, it's not my main focus

Mortal Kombat would like to have a word with you

Seriously, the game that rebooted Mortal Kombat has a great story. Mortal Kombat X's story is also good, though it's not as good as the game that came before it. Still, it blows other games in the genre out of the water when it comes to its story mode

The Liu Kang Kitana thing seemed pretty forced, not as bad as Kilik Xianghua, but still kinda awkward and clunky. Didn't get further into it than past the ending of MK1 as I was playing it at t a friend's house.

It's not really expanded on (in MK9, at least), other than when

[spoiler=MK9 and MKX spoilers, for those who care]Kitana succumbs to her wounds, that Sindel inflicted on her. She basically says to Liu Kang, "You're right: I wish we did meet under different circumstances." She then dies. In X, Liu Kang and Kitana end up ruling the Netherworld (Raiden accidentally kills Liu Kang just before the final fight against Shao Kahn, and both Kitana and Liu Kang [as well as the rest of Earthrealm's warriors who got killed by Sindel]) end up being revived as Revenants by Quan Chi, after Shinnok's plans have been thwarted

Fighting games with good story are more enjoyable, but if their stories are bad it doesn't matter much. I play for the mechanics, yet I appreciate when the characters and the setting they're in are likable and well thought. I like Soul Calibur's and Tekken's stories and characters, particularly. The King of Fighters, Guilty Gear and Street Fighter have silly stories but cool characters, so they're also passable.

Mortal Kombat is the only fighting game that I know I play solely for the mechanics.

Chronicles of the Sword had a lulzy villain, but other than that it was pretty cool.

I want another mode like that!

I want another Soul Calibur game, with COTS back.

We got IV in 2008, V came out in 2012, so.. VI for 2016?

Well there is Load Swords if that counts,, and judging by the roster (including DLC) I'm really hoping Cassandra, Mina, Setsuka and Xianghua return. Although the last two are idle fantasies, and Lexia has annoying enough quotes that she's fun to play against friends

Also I can't remember Strife doing anything noteworthy besides killing

Giradot

I did like Abelia and Luna though, shame they'll never return along with Hwang and Miser

Thing about fighting games is that they need a story to have a reason to fight. But most fighting game players don't care much about it since the spotlight IS the fights themselves.

Most fighting game stories almost always has a plot device that involve tournaments (Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, KoF, etc.), or some sort of mystical object that the fighters are seeking (Soul Calibur, KoF? etc.).

But yeah, playing fighting games for stories mostly depends on which game I'm playing.

Tch tch tch...King of Fighters Orochi Arc, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Def Jam, Blaz Blue, Guilty Gear, Injustice: GAU, Persona 4 Arena, v..v..Some of them even has better story than many action games.

With that said, I am currently playing DOA5 Last Round and I am certain that I didnt play it because of the story.

DOA's story amuses me, though I'm more interested in Hayate/Hayabusa than anything else (for obvious reasons).

I picked up the PS3 port for Tekken 6 (DR, IIRC) JUST for the story. I was only slightly disappointed, because I was fond of Lars.
