Prologue: Danar's Game

As of late, relations between Angala and Irska have been even more foul. With border skirmishes becoming more common each passing day, full scale war seemed inevitable between the two. Irskan villagers began to collect their possessions and make preparations to flee, as more and more soldiers marched towards the borders on both sides; with neither unwilling to budge an inch. Near the river Fain on the Irskan side of the border was no different, as one mercenary group from Velms were about to prove.

The leader of Hart's Hollows turned to address the group. She was a woman with long orange hair kept in a ponytail, with hazel eyes that showed that she wasn't here to play around. While some of them had been mercenaries before, Sheikah herself included, this was their first job working together under this name, with the journey here being the first time that many of them had met. The some of them seemed pretty green, and she needed to make sure they knew what was going on.

"Alright, listen up, you lot! We're here as a patrol and only that. We are not to initiate combat with anyone other than any hostile Angalan soldiers at the section of the river we are in. That's all we're looking for until ordered otherwise. There's a squad of Irskan soldiers up ahead we're working together with... Diana's with 'em, needed a healer or something. There's not supposed to be too many of them. Best case scenario, there's nobody in our area, we meet up with the others, and collect our pay. But that's probably not going to happen, so don't get your hopes up! You can all get ready and talk amongst yourselves or whatever along the way. Get acquainted and all that, learn what each other can do in battle. Any questions?"

She didn't wait for much of a response, leaving to ready her wyvern for the upcoming patrol. She was hoping that they wouldn't have to risk a fight with Angalan soldiers, but based on what she'd heard it didn't seem like unlikely.

Magali half-listened to the conversation, other part of her mind thinking of the river they passed and how it flowed. I wonder if that water's cold, that'd be nice.

Looking at their leader leave, she caught up that the briefing was over. "Oh... right." She looked around, reminding herself she had gotten herself in a mercenary group lately. Mostly to make things easy as she traveled, but the leader did seem interested in having her healing magic used.

"Well, the task isn't going to take long, right?" She said to nobody in particular, just wanting to hear an answer.

"Please. This will be trivial. Even if we run into enemies, we'll take them out. No need for a fuss," Taima grinned before stretching and going to check her her weapons and armor. Regardless of their leader's hope, she would rather be safe than sorry.

Declan sneered as he gazed out at the landscape before him as he took a look around at the group he was with now. Some of them were mounted fighters, which he knew made them useful to most people, but deep down, Declan only believed in one person to keep him safe out there on the job; that being himself.

"Pfeh. Those soldiers won't be able to hold a candle to us as long as we don't get careless." Declan scoffed, sharpening his sword on a small whetstone he carried around with him.

Ben, more time for me to read zis book. I cannot say I am een ze mood to speak. Melanie wasn't the most enthused to speak to anyone, not as of yet. Instead, she kept to herself in a corner of the group, face indulged in whatever book she'd managed to find. They mercenaries seemed rather full of themselves, anyway. She had no delusions of magical mastery. Almost all of her hoped they didn't run into anyone.

They're too cocky, Peter thought to himself. This is exactly how the last group acted, right before real adversity hit. Most of 'em were cut down from behind. The bowman stretched lazily and quietly observed the others. They'd learn about each other, all right. He hoped that it wasn't by speaking last words over their graves.

"Is that so? Okay..." Magali replied as the others spoke of their skills to her. If they're as strong as they're confident, I could rest around until we're done with this. She thought to herself.

She just made sure she had her leather purse ready with some medicine, and a staff to channel her healing magic. When she was sure she had both in place, she just looked forward, still thinking about the river. "I wonder if that river is chilly in the morning, maybe it would make for a refreshing swim." She pondered, again, not speaking to anybody in particular. Magali just enjoyed talking to herself, though there were meanies that would call her weird for it. Or so she thought.

Hmm. Peut-être, madame will make for ze good conversation. Melanie normally wouldn't have said anything, but upon noticing that the woman was sporting a staff, her curiosity had been piqued. Struggling to, but eventually closing her book, she brought herself over to the woman, seemingly speaking to herself. "Excuse moi, madame," she began, "but uh... are you one of ze 'ealers of ze group?"

Hmm. The girl talking about the river seems... interesting, Declan thought as he finished sharpening his sword, staring at the blade in his hand and smiling. Perfect, he mused, now it was ready for anything. "So, do we have any intel as to what we might be dealing with, enemy-wise?"

"Hmm?" She turned to the girl whom questioned her. "Oh. Yes, you could call me that. I know my fair bit with healing magic." She smiled a little, raising her staff a little. "I learned from a priest. And I've been using it for a while, it really helps, or so I've been told."

"Vraiment? C'est fantastique! I was worried zat I would be ze only person here that would know 'ow to use a staff, but I am glad to see I was wrong." Melanie let out a small sigh of relief. "I am not the best at it. Much better with ze magic, y'know? Per chance, uh... you do not also know how to cast spells, do you? Oh, zut alors. My name, it is Melanie. Sorry, I am not very good at ze conversations."

"It's nice to know there are others there that can keep us patched up, just in case. Yes." Magali replied. For her, it felt nice that there was at least somebody to waste time chatting. "I tried light magic before! Didn't get too much far, though. I still think I could cast some basic light magic, in case I was to see in a dark place or so. I can't channel from these tomes made for self-defense, though." She continued. "I can read, but the whole chanting and focusing takes some work. If it were just chanting, I bet I'd be pretty good already. Eheh." She let a small giggle. Yeah, I wish I could just start singing and magic would flow from me. As if things were that easy. At that point, it sank that the woman had introduced herself. "Oh, I'm Magali. There's no problem with not being good with conversations. People can just look past it, anyways. They only don't if they're meanies."

Before she knew it, she was being bombarded with tonnes of information. She did her best to stay caught up with it, though. "Light magic, I see. By ze way you are talking, It sounds like you can, uhm... chanter... Sing! Can you? Zat would be wonderful to 'ear." I wonder what ze singing sounds like outside of Velms. It is probably très magnifique. "Magali. I shall remember zis. But uhm... what do you mean by zis word, 'meanie'?" A faint memory of when she was a child came back, hearing a similar sounding word, but she couldn't remember it entirely for the life of her. "It sounds like ze words ze children used to say..." she said, absently, trying to think back on it.

"Well, you two seem to be getting along nicely." Declan clearly was getting tired of waiting around, and had supposed that small talk was a better way to pass time than doing nothing at all. "And both of you are magic users? Well, if anyone gets too close, just call for me; after all, I am a deft swordsman." Pride filled Declan's mind as he thought of the many exploits he had undertaken as a ruffian in Velms, and the sword training he received in Irska.

"Mean-spirited, people. I try to not let it get to me, so I call them that. It doesn't feel that strong to say, so I just drop it when people bother me." She pondered about it a little. "... I guess that doesn't make it sound very serious. Well, too serious just isn't how I like life, I guess."

"Oh. Yes, I can sing. I really like to! It's just... fun, destressing. It's really wonderful, I can't go wrong with it~." She felt a bit excited with the subject. It was the one thing she enjoyed to do the most, after all.

So much for her subject as the swordman had introduced himself. "Oh, hello." She said, not really paying attention to what he was saying until the last part. "Mmm. Okay, if you say so. If you get too many wounds, fall back so I can heal you. It's a group so we can help each other, I think." Magali giggled a bit.

"Ah, ben, oui. I know of ze people zat you speak. I have much...'eavier words, for zem. Nevermind all of zat." She listened to Magali speak of singing, and chimed in with, "ah yes, I feel ze same way about reading. Eef I 'ave any problems avec le monde, I just disappear into a good book. Eet is wonderful, non?" Maybe these people are not so bad. I could, perhaps, get to know zem? We shall see.

Then, as if on que, one of the soldiers from before spoke at them. Ah. Ze cockiest one, from moments ago. I see. "Oui, monsieur swordsman. I will surely hide behind you, eef I run into any trouble." She then giggled, and turned back to Magali. Zat was 'ow ze book did it. I ah'm sure eet is ze right way to deal with men.

Lugos sat away from the others but still close enough to hear their conversations. Something about chanting, healing magic, magic in general and a deft swordsman who didn't even mention his own name that was promptly shoved out of the conversation. "Referring to your question," Lugos spoke up to the swordsman, "I believe they would be standard Angalan military. Probably nothing more than grunts though so don't expect to see that many wyverns- if any at all," he said in a bored tone. "As for their equipment... probably iron weapons, basic armor, low level spells and maybe some vulneraries amongst the lot of them. If we run into any of them it shouldn't be too hard unless they vastly outnumber us."

Magali giggled a bit more as it seemed she and her acquaintance just dumped the confident swordsman out of the conversation. Poor mr. swordsman, or maybe not. Maybe he's a nice person and just a bit too confident about his skills, I guess I'll find out eventually. She turned to Melanie again, still pleased with the conversation. "Yeah, it's just nice to feel so absorbed. Like you can rest without worry of what's going on with the world." Just after speaking, Magali started feeling thirsty. She opened her purse and took out her canteen after some searching, promptly drinking some. Good thing I didn't forget this one somewhere again, I keep forgetting to check if it is there! "Speaking of the world, I forget what's up with this conflict. Something about lands, right?" She realized that it never had come to her to understand the intrications of the whole thing she had just become a part of.

"I wish I 'ad more time for zis feeling of not worrying. Eet seems I 'ave little time pour la lecture, de nos jours. Ben, maybe this group will turn out to be just as good as my books." I doubt zis greatly, she thought, though this talk with Magali was, at least, going well. It then dawned on her how she'd been speaking the entire time. "Oh, I ah'm sorry! I 'ave been switching between my native language and common zis 'ole time. Eet must 'ave been 'ard for you to follow what I was saying. Franchement, Melanie," she finished, mostly saying the last line to herself. "I will try to uh, stick to one language, to make zis easier."

Sitting a bit away from the rest of the group, Taima rolled her eyes slightly at the swordsman offering to protect the two healers. "It's a team effort that will make it easy. We all need to depend on each other, regardless of how well or poorly the enemy is equipped. Of course we should all watch out for the other. We're all trying to get through, not just one of us."

Declan scoffed at Taima's statement, as if he were just a rookie going out on his first job. "I'm well aware we're fighting as a team. But think about it; we'd be sunk without healing, especially if the numbers are heavily stacked against us." Growling under his breath, he wondered just who she was to talk to him that way.

"We're all in this together," Peter said as evenly as he could to Declan. "If we don't take care of each other, the odds of us coming out victorious are much lower." It's always the loud ones that are the first to run. . .

"Did you just ignore the fact where I said that we all needed to depend on each other? Of course healing is important, but so are the people defending the healers. We all need to work together. No one person is the most important, not you, not the healers."

"Also," Melanie said to the others, wondering if she should even participate in this conversation, "I can use ze dark magic. I am not, uh, 'ow you say, 'elpless. Ze 'ealing, eet is just a zing I can do. I will make sure to watch your backs, of course." Zat should do eet. Now, back to Magali. Zis talk ees very calming.
