Is it ever explained how anyone besides Ike can hurt Ashnard?

Recommended Posts

I just played through this game again, and this is something I've wondered for awhile that I still couldn't find any answer for. Ashnard's armor is effectively identical the the BK's, right? How can Tibarm/Naesala/Giffca/Nasir/Ena damage him?

The first thing that comes to mind is that the royals are somehow blessed by the goddess too, but that doesn't work, because Laguz leaders aren't chosen by bloodline. And of course there's the fact that Giffca, Ena, and Nasir aren't Royals.

I know the obvious answer is "because gameplay!" / so that it's not another 1v1 fight with Ike, but the game goes so far out of its way to stress that the goddess armor is invincible to everything but Ragnell.

Also from what I understand, he can be damaged by S-Rank weapons in Maniac mode. Did they really just throw canon under the bus for this fight?

I dunno if it has any storyline backing, but I figured the Black Knight had the proper goddess-blessed armour and gave Ashnard some inferior gear. Perhaps Ashnard's armour is older and lost some of its blessing?

But I can answer your last question: that was a misconception; S Rank weapons do jack all to Ashnard on any mode. However some people got confused early on.

There is no explanation given that I am aware of.

Of course a simple rationalisation could be that the BK was mistaken in his assumption that the armor would litterally protect against anything. Or that he at least phrased it like he did because he knew that Ike by himself couldn't bring up the power necessary to overcome the blessing so he didn't bother him with unnecessary details. He was afraid of going into battle with Caineghis after all.

For my part, I don't even aknowledge that Ashnard has blessed armor.

There is no reason why the BK would give it to him, he doesn't wear a helm so he wouldn't be invulnerable anyway and he still looks the same as he did at the beginning of the game so why would the BK at the end of the game suddenly ask Ashnard if he likes the armor if he was wearing it for at least an entire year already?

And while the armor was a good plotdevice to allow Ike to go one-on-one against his personal nemesis, he has no such relationship with Ashnard. So it really doesn't matter who fights and kills the guy. It's such a shame too because it puts all those good final boss dialoges between the different characters to waste.

Laguz Nobility might just be able to scratch his unprotected face very hard.

Ashnard: Oh, the king of hawks! Meeting your feathered carcass here today is... Fantastic! I am so pleased!

Tibarn: As am I. I want to rake my talons across your face so much, I can hardly control myself.

Ashnard: Waaaaa haaaa haaa! Heeee heee haaa! Perfect! PERFECT!!! That is what war is all about!

Tibarn: Come. Let's get started.

And Ashnard says Naesala is looking for chinks in his armor.

And if a dragon breathes super-hot / super-cold stuff on your armor and it heats/freezes, it'll hurt.

And if a lion slams into you, the sudden acceleration is going to make you bounce off the inside of your impervious armor. It'll hurt like heck.

Still doesn't explain why nobody else can hurt him, like, if fire dragon breath can, why not fire magic?

I'm pretty certain that the Black Knight gave armor to Ashnard, and I wouldn't call it inferior either. We never really get to have any Royal Laguz or Dragons take on the Black Knight, so I wouldn't necessarily say its weaker than the Black Knight's unless we found out that neither of two wouldn't work on him.

My thoughts would be somewhere along the lines that maybe the Laguz don't attack Ashnard, but rather its more Laguz Vs. Laguz and they're attacks damage Rajaion and If he falls its similar to any other mounted units and they fall and die... Or somebody didn't foresee the lot of us looking at this with such intensity hahahaha

From chapter 25 script

Black Knight

The armor I presented to you...Do you find it dissatisfactory?

Ashnard

No, it has my approval. My wyvern Rajaion, and this armor which renders any enemy attack impotent... Both are well suited to me. They both shine because they are mine! And now the medallion, and that galdr as well, both belong in my hands!

yup... only reference I found in script.

It's not the only one actually. When Ashnard approaches Elincia and Ike before the final battle, he acknowledges Ragnel as the "only type of blade that can pierce my armor".

In addition to what I said in my previous post, I would also like to say that I think that using such armor would be out-of-character for Ashnard as well. If he is literally invincible then his encouragements don't make a lot of sense:

Ashnard: You? Cut me down? Heee… Good. If you possess the strength to do so, then so be it. That process is the principle on which my ideal world operates.

Ashnard: That is not the extent of your might, beast tribe warrior! I will not allow you to die while the great power within you still slumbers. Release your rage! Release your hate! Show me the fury you keep inside!

Ashnard: Hawks of Phoenicis! How strong are you that Begnion should fear you so? I trust I may expect good things from our battle.

Ashnard: Perhaps I’ll kill you after all! If you are their child, you get special privileges! Show me your might!

And he seems more then willing to test the extend of his power. He even expressed the desire to fight the Black Knight. So I really don't think he would cheat by turning himself invincible like that, even if just because that would bore him.

Ragnell might be the only blade that can pierce his armor, but claws and talons aren't blades.

If so, then why can't a super trained Lethe do the job?

Also, has anyone hacked the game and checked to see if Nasir etc can damage the Black Knight in battle? I imagine they have the same gameplay properties but I'm still curious.

I've done it before with Ena after copious amounts of RN abuse... I think it was something like "Blessed Weapons, Royal Laguz, and Dragons" as the only thing that can do damage to those guys.

I'm not sure. I do remember that after Greil was defeated by BK, he retreated after hearing the lion king. So maybe laguz royals innately have the ability to pierce the special armor, but this doesn't explain how Nasir and Ena could.

Would've been cool if Elincia could hurt and actually kill Ashnard. She has her own conversation against him, and I've her take him on with Resolve for cuadriples.

Like 10+ different people have unique quotes vs ashnard. My favorite one is big T quote since it becomes true in radiant dawn.

It's likely due to the point brought up during FE 10. Ranulf and Mist are said to carry powerful alignment with order within them, and enough chaos makes them ill. Herons are said to have this, and at the very least Dheginsea seems to as well, and you may be able to further draw that to Dragon Laguz. My theory following that is that certain powerful Laguz begin to align themself with one of the aspects of the goddess and thus gain the power to overcome the blessing of the armor. Beorc cannot impart their inner strength to their weaponry in such a way however, and as such require blessed weapons. That's the way I've justified it to myself at any rate.
