Prims
Hello hi. This is a mafia equivalent of the Question of the Day thread - each day for the month of May I'll post a question about mafia preferences, playstyle, etc, and you're free to answer and discuss said answers with your fellow players. Hopefully the result will give everybody a chance to seriously compare and contrast the way they play with other people, or just have fun chatting about some dumb unplayable forum game that sucks. Let's start with the most obvious question. You get an extra ~6 hours for this one because I was lazy. 1. Do you prefer town or scum? Why? What about ITP? Archives: Day 1 - Do you prefer town or scum? Why? What about ITP? Day 2 - You rolled town! Which role do you want to be in your role PM the most? Day 3 - You rolled mafia! What role do you want to see in your Role PM the most? Day 4 - Where do you draw the line to call a game "bastard"? Day 5 - Which mafia game that you've played in is your favorite? Day 6 - Let's go back to the question where you rolled town. After reading your PM and checking the playerlist, who do you most hope is on your team? Day 7 - Ultimately, what do you think are your strongest and weakest points as town? Day 8 - Back in the universe where you rolled scum, who do you want as your buddies? Day 9 - When you're scum, who's getting top billing as a NK target? Day 10 - Assume you're town and its D1. What annoys you/makes it difficult while you're scum hunting? Day 11 - Ultimately, what do you think are your strongest and weakest points as scum? Edited June 3, 2014 by Prims
riariadne
I like being town over scum because I'm a bad liar. I like being ITP better than scum even when I'm hostile ITP because I can feel like I'm town to myself by hunting mafia.

Green Poet
Yay, this thread finally got made~ I've never gotten to play ITP, and I found I couldn't play very convincingly at all in the one game I rolled mafia. So I guess I prefer playing town, if just because it's easier to speak genuinely.
Paperblade
itp>town>maf Neutral is the best because the roles are strong and there's less pressure than as scum, so I can usually contribute. I have a bad tendency to get complacent when I'm "clear" (see: Schoolteacher, SoH). I suck hard at mafia because reasons, I think that if I was better at it I'd enjoy it as much as town but it's hard to practice it with nerds like Prims breathing down my neck every game
Grace
i mostly prefer town when i do play, but i find that if before a game i want to play scum i'll actually play okay enough so *shrug*
Refa
Mafia > Town > ITP Mafia is kind of harder to play than town I guess, but I'm good at lying and it's nice to have some camaraderie with a few people rather than being suspicious of everyone like some paranoid old man. Town is easy as fuck to play. Even when I'm horrible, I can blame other people for listening to me. I haven't gotten any killing roles as town though, so fuck that noise. I'd probably like ITP more if I'd ever won as it. Nothing against the alignment itself, I just like winning.
Elieson
Nonhostile ITP. Having a wincon not related to killing makes it like you are genuinely self aligned, rather than a one man scumteam. I hate being maf
Paperblade
nonhostile neutral is so hard to design in a way that's not stupid as hell
Junk
hmm the general consensus seems to be that people prefer playing as town then mafia. Hmm guess I will have to get sides from both perspectives.
Elieson
nonhostile neutral is so hard to design in a way that's not stupid as hell Tbh I more meant like itp with a unique wincon, not just killing and last standing. Carnival Phantasm, Toonami, Void and Shining Force 2 had ITPs that I support
euklyd
In all of my one (1) scumgames I would have to say that scum is fun because you get to chat with people and stuff while knowing they're not about to case you for stuff - I imagine masons would be similarly fun. Refa said this part better. I have a tendency to be ~really lazy~ as town and kinda suck at it (probably like scum as well but there's less evidence there) anyways, so meh. ITP might be somewhere in-between? IDK.
Eurykins
Never been ITP of any sort as of yet. Sad times. :( Mafia's fun to role with, but I tend to be with buddies that drop like flies around me... ;_; (or else, first game, I get lynched D1, lol). Town's alright, but it gets a bit frustrating at times if/when I can see/find scum myself, but it gets hard to prove it openly to convince the rest of the people that my read(s) are right. ;/ Though I must say: I felt 10x more comfortable/in my element (and seemed to play better) as Mafia Role Cop than Town Alliance Cop. T_T;;
Prims
Mafia Question of the Day 2: hi snike, when are you going to join a mafia game I prefer town just because I think the thrill of finding scum and getting them lynched is more enjoyable than evading capture. Generally town take an active role (catching the bad guys) and scum take a passive one (not being caught), and I'm an active person. I've also had several bad experiences rolling scum then losing (or narrowly winning lmao) over what felt like me being at the mercy of the set-up. That said, scum can be really, really fun if you have entertaining buddies and mesh well with them. I'd actually like to roll mafia as part of a small scumteam in a large game like the ones I host (Spellcard, CYOR), seems like it'd be more entertaining than normal, and I'd be statistically less likely to get screwed over by roles. Not to mention more people = more of an excuse for me being alive lategame. SK is horrible, it's like a one-man scumteam. Cult is alright but I've always died quickly and have never been leader, and I also don't really like cult as a game concept. If I ever get a survivor role PM I'm just going to parse it as "congratulations, you lose!". lol jester.
MRDRHAWK
I've only rolled scum three times, and one was NOC while the other two were anon so I'd go town
Prims
tbh it seems like the people who roll harmful third here are always the same people over and over even though that's not entirely true aside from Paperblade. pretty sure we have more people who've been harmful third twice than people who've been harmful third once though. stop rigging the RNG :colbert:
Xinnidy
I don't think I've ever been itp so idk about that. Being mafia was awesome in my second game as mafia because I was so hyped and tried to get into town's good side and it was going so well until I died d1, but I had enough time to bother. Other times I felt I didn't have the time to worry so much with the subversion and just felt pretty bad about my play overall though I guess that's a personal problem. Town is cool most of the time because I don't have to worry as much about my errors but they're still bad and it's still rewarding when I put effort I guess. Bluedoom
I like being town because I'm almost always town. That's actually true, in my 40+ games I've played here I've only been mafia 6 times

Unfortunately I feel like I actually got worse at being mafia since I started playing because I have no faith in myself.

Kaoz
Mafia > Town/ITP. Being able to chat with some people during the game makes it much more entertaining, although you need to get along with them to an extent.
eclipse
I much prefer town - that way, I don't have to make up things against people. Don't really care for mafia (since I really don't like lying), and have been a harmful ITP once (in a Psych game). Fun fact: I seem to pull the killing roles. ;/
Sunwoo
The fuck, out of my 20 games I've been Mafia 8 times. So yeah. Mods clearly rigging my alignment. Get on j00's level. I have a slight preference for town over mafia only because a certain state of mind makes it literally impossible for me to play as mafia, while I can always play town. I have a slight preference for ITP over town only because of how hard it is to roll ITP.
