Imagine pokemon with demons, a way darker story, and dungeon crawling. SMT could be described as that.

There are three SMTs on the 3DS, iirc.

And I only played SMT IV.

And I haven't even finished yet.

I should.

Yes, SMT IV, Devil survivor overclocked and soul hackers.

And yes, you should finish it. It's an amazing game. IMO the best 3ds game so far.

To give the short version, Shin Megami Tensei is one of Japan's leading RPG series. (The last rating I heard of it was 3rd popular just after Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, don't know if that still holds or not) It didn't have any presence in Western nations until the 5th generation, in which the first couple Persona sub series games got localized. Persona 1 and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment garnered a small following, so they started porting over more games in the 6th generation, and Persona 3 and 4 managed to cement it as a presence in the West.

Personal favorites of mine and notable games in the series would be SMT 3 Nocturne (or Lucifer's Call depending on your location), and the Digital Devil Saga Duology on the PS2. On the 3DS, there is Soul Hackers, another Sub Series game, which I heard good things about from my friend, and SMTIV, the newest entry which was also pretty good. If you have access to a PS2, I can strongly recommend Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, and Persona 4. If 3DS is all you have, give SMTIV a shot because it's pretty good. There's also Devil Survivor, a SRPG sub series which would be good to recommend since I can presume you're a Fire Emblem fan.

EDIT: In regards to Persona 4, if you happen to have a PS Vita, there is an updated version of the game available on that.

also the world ends in every game, without fail

It depends on the game and route and even then cataclysm is usually only in the main line series, the other games tend to be in certain areas that if events did go bad would spread but that again depends on the endings

Mainline Shin Megami Tensei really deals less with the characters and more with the concepts of order and chaos. One can choose to align with chaos and bring about a "might makes right" rule where the strongest survive. Perhaps anarchy rises in some cases, but it does depend on how Lucifer is shown in the games. Order, or Law, is about the idea of eternal peace. However, said peace would involve subjugation. In theory, everyone is equal, but those who don't hold true to the faith of God (Or YHVH) are eliminated. When you think about it, both paths have their share of hypocrisy.

There is, however, a middle road with neutrality. That path, ultimately, puts one at odds with both Law and Chaos. Depending on the game, it can be viewed as one who believes in nothing. Usually, this can lead to a temporary respite, before the forces of Law and Chaos once again clash.

I won't say that it's necessarily deep, but the concepts can be pretty philosophical when one really thinks about it.

Also there's literal dicks. Fair warning.

SMT as a game mechanically is a JRPG at heart, and involves the recruitment of demons and the fusions of them in order to get a stronger party and having an almost unlimited amount of diversity in terms of team customization and customization of the demons. The base games (SMT1, SMT2, SMT3 Nocturne, Strange Journey and SMT4) are these games. The Persona series usually throws in a psuedo dating sim mechanic into the game that involves bonding with the main characters to make them more powerful and useful in battle. Persona isn't about collecting and fusing demons to make a super mega team though, as most of the Persona games force the main characters to use only one demon (called a persona in the game, hence the title), usually excluding the main character where you can still fuse demons for the main character to use for themselves. It usually does not involve the heavy recruitment and collection of demons, but focuses more on fusion. Devil Survivor 1 and 2 for the handhelds are a combination of Final Fantasy Tactics' grid-based turn based strategy system while maintaining the combat system of the original SMT games. Other than that, they're aren't TOO different from the main titles in terms of gameplay.

Story wise, the main titles will usually be a bit more philosophical, and focus on concepts of law, chaos and humanity's choice (one, the other or neither) to salvation in face of apocalypse. Chaos usually focuses on the idea of the strong survive and the weak die, and whoever has power can do whatever they wish. Law focuses on peace, order and balance in exchange for freedom and being oppressed by a smiteful God (YHVH) and being killed if they do not swear undying and unwavering devotion to God. Neutrality is usually considered the "good" endings in the game series as they reject the chaos and law routes, and usually strive to find a means to save humanity without resorting to the absolute rule of an oppressive God or the constant pressure of an endless war among everyone. Persona does NOT focus on this AT ALL, and is usually a group of schoolkids who gain powers, solve murders every now and then and thwart an absolute evil. Chaos, Law and Neutrality are not touched upon in this at all, and focuses more on character development than anything. The Persona games can basically be considered Scooby-Doo esque. Kids get together, stop spooky ghosts, save the day. Devil Survivor focuses on Law, Chaos and Neutrality in face of an apocalypse like the main games, and also have some forms of character development.

I could have written much more but I'm being forced out the door to my next class.

Though, I think his description on Persona seems to refer more to Persona 4 then to any of the other ones.

The first two Persona games allowed every Party Member to have multiple Personae for example.

But otherwise... yeah, he summed it all up better then any of us ever could.

Most games take place in Tokyo, some segment of Tokyo, the Demon World/Makai/Expanse, fictional cities in Japan, sometimes in Heaven/Tenkai/Amnesia, and realms from the Collective Unconsciousness.

The only games with legit fictional locations was the Last Bible series, but with all the locations named after ancient real world or mythical cities. DDS takes place in a special world, the United States, and a special final dungeon in 2. Finally worlds based on places from mythology like Valhalla, Muspellheim, and Niflheim.

Just so I have this right ... forgive me as I have never played a SMT game.

Will this be a SRPG? Like FE? Or is it going to be nothing like that?

Like most of you, I will buy any game that is FE related, especially on the Wii U. But from what I've seen (not much) this looks like a persona game (also, a game I've never played).

It's too soon to say. The brief shots that we were shown seem to indicate Persona gameplay, but we're missing a LOT. I think you'll have a more concrete answer once the game is out in Japan.

SMT was really not that much all 'Law VS Chaos', it was just a tiny team-building choice, and a tiny end-game choice.

It had nothing to do with the extreme, or the bullcrap that they put in front of our face like in Strange Journey, SMTIV or DS2.

Same with Neutral, it was just doing what both factions told you to do, or giving them the finger, now it's all 'humanity is awesome', maintaining the status-quo, or such bull. Pfeh, how boring and dumb.

Nocturne and DS1 had every path you wanted. Like Der Langrisser.

In FEXSMT, the SMT part looks more like Persona, they are not that good story-wise. :p

Gameplay-wise, SMT or Persona, you're gonna lose a lot, though SMTIV was just freaking easy for me.

Since no one has posted about this yet, I'll add what I know:

Shin Megami Tensei is vaguely based on an incredibly awful novel called Megami Tensei, which has little to do with the actual series itself. Unlike it's name sake, which is truly terrible (it contains a lot of AO rated material, much of which is carried out by the supposed "protagonist," so you have been warned), the Shin Megami Tensei series is mainly about the war between order and chaos, although each side is the representation of one of the extremes. A previous post on this thread contains more about that.

While the main games more or less rehash the same themes, the series has expanded in a vast array of different directions, some of which have never been translated into English, but most of which have (thanks Atlus!) Here are the main English series:

Soul Hackers: Almost identical to the main series, but with a cyberpunk setting. As the name implies, hacking plays a role.

Persona: The most popular spin off, the persona series centers around urban myths and legends. It has expanded into its own vast array of spin offs including fighting games, dungeon crawlers, and rhythm games.

Devil Survivor: Turn based strategy, with story and art by the author of Durarara. Very excellent.

Raidou Kuzunoha XIV: This is a pretty wild series. Unlike the previous entrants, this is an action RPG. It plays a lot like a slightly more in depth Ni No Kuni. Very obscure, with ridiculously long names. The first game is titled: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army.

Devil Summoner: Technically, the Raidou Kuzunoha series is part of this spin off. I haven't played them, so I don't know anything about them.

Maken X: Not actually part of the SMT franchise, but closely related.

You forgot Majin Tensei, which is basically a crossover between the original SMT games and Fire Emblem Mystery of the Emblem.
