FE games for a newcomer

Recommended Posts

Now, I obviously understand that this topic is likely to have been covered many a time by others, but I can't be bothered, so I'm asking here.

I have played FE13 rather extensively. At the time of writing, I have put 280 hours into it, and am currently undertaking the task of capping everyone's limit breaker stats (ugh). I normally play on Hard/Classic, but I understand that this is more akin to Normal/Normal compared to other FE games.

What I am basically asking is, as you may or may not have sussed out from the title, is what FE games you would recommend to a newbie, who is ready to commit to the difficulty and perma-death of a more traditional FE game.

Many thanks in advance,

PsychicFlamingo

I would argue that FE8 is even more friendly for beginners, especially on the easiest setting. But since you've already played Awakening on Hard/Classic, you can probably play most FEs on Normal fairly comfortably.

As for which game you should play next, it's very dependent on one's preferences. Initially I can only recommend you play any FE from the 7-12 range, since the earlier titles might not be very appealing if you go to them straight after Awakening. They have aged somewhat, and you probably need to play a bit more of the series to truly appreciate them.

Just don't play FE10 before FE9, since 10 is a straight sequel to 9.

FE7 is the most newbie-friendly game so far.

I'd say PoR is just as newbie-friendly, but a better game. FE7, imo, is one of the worse titles in the series. Unfortunately though, it's easier to find than PoR, so you are probably best off starting with it. Sacred Stones might also be a good choice since it features an overworld map and branched promotions like Awakening though. Plus it's better than FE7, if you ask me.

But these are just my opinions, so feel free to pay them no mind. lol

The problem with FE7 is that it has an awful forced tutorial. It is absurdly long and boring. But worse, it's also loves to confuse the player with unnecessary details or is often downright misleading.

However, at least if you have a Wii U, you can easily buy it for the Virtual Console. The other games have rather limited availability these days.

If availability wouldn't be an issue, I would recommend Sacred Stones or Path of Radiance. They have useful in-game manuals that provide you with information when you actually need it. Of course since you have played Awakening, you probably don't need it at all. So the good part is that the forced tutorial section is very short. I think Path of Radiance doesn't even have one at all.

The problem is that those old games are difficult to find to a reasonable prizes these days.

Shadow Dragon is merely a remake, so it feels a bit barebone. But as a DS game, it should still be easy to track it down. It also has a feature that fills your party with generic troops if too many units die.

Thank you all for the kind words and recommendations. If it helps at all, I'll narrow it down a bit.

I am not bothered by long tutorials, but if they are pandering to someone whose got the basics down, it may prove a tad jarring.

Overall I value gameplay and challenge over story, but if one FE game in particular has an outstanding story, I'm willing to give it a try.

Considering I've hit a veritable speed bump in Awakening, a FE game that tends not to drag on and is fairly fast-paced would be nice.

Thank you once again for your kind thoughts and contributions to something I'm sure you've seen this question and answered it thousands of times, but I truly appreciate the effort put into answering my humble request.

What? PoR SO has tutorials. I do them all the time because I find Anna hilarious in them.

But not forced ones, IIRC. I think that's what makes the FE9 tutorial one of the more favourable examples of the mechanic.

If you want a fast-paced game, you'd probably like 11/12, since that's where the overall speed of the games went up a bit, and the option to skip enemy turns was introduced (even if I don't like to utilize the mechanic myself). The GBA games aren't remarkably slow either. Some complain about the slow gameplay flow of the Tellius games (9/10), so do keep that in mind.

Ohhh, that's what BrightBow meant. I see now, you're right. :P

If you can find it PoR would be the FE I would recommend or Sacred Stones but finding copies can be difficult but I have had good luck on Amazon Shadow Dragon should be easy to find but it is a remake of the original.

7, 8 and 9 are all great for newcomers. All have solid enough stories, and varied objectives (More so than awakening). 8 is probably the most similar to awakening, in terms of difficulty, and the presence of multiple promotion paths.

Genealogy of the Holy War

Play Sacred Stones. The whole free-style overworld map roam will seem familiar, then transition into PoR or FE7 at your leisure. PoR is hella expensive though, since my local game store gave me around 60 bucks for my copy, and I think online places like Amazon are selling it for a load of dollars too (as of writing this, Amazon only has ONE COPY LEFT for 160 USD).

Then play Genealogy if you like to whore out eugenics.

I must say, the magnitude of helpful replies I've gotten on this post really surprised me. I knew Serenes' forest had a good community, but hot diggety, this is outstanding. Thank you for the kind and thoughtlful insight you have provided.

I'm going to go ahead and try to pick up FE9, then work backwards towards 7 and 8, since it seems to be my best bet for now. Love you guys <3

FE7 or FE8, FE9 sucks and is not worth its rarity and cost.

If you have played Hard/Classic Awakening, I think you can manage FE6 NM, so I'll throw that one out there too because it's amazing at striking the balance of hard but not throw your controller worthy.

On the contrary, I think FE9/PoR is one of the best games ever and it has the best lord in the series. In fact, most people here will agree that it's a great game.

I wouldn't say FE9 is awful in the slightness, but I agree it's not worth the cost it is nowadays.

As a last tidbit of advice, don't let your opinion be formed by any vocal groups or individuals. The community can almost never draw a consensus on any given game and opinions range drastically. You're better off playing the games yourself and drawing conclusions afterwards.

I understand this, but I trust these people, since I have literally no knowledge of my own, and these opinions seem to be fairly unbiased. Opinions are fine and dandy, but the majority of you are acting maturely enough about this subject that I think I can trust your judgement.

Yeah, but you're still going to have people saying that game X is really good and then others saying that the same game sucks. You can't agree with both sides. lol

IS does really need to make past FEs more available though. Awakening is like the only one that's easy to find. I don't even see Shadow Dragon much anymore. Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn especially need help here. Awakening brought in so many new fans like yourself! They're going to want to play these older titles. Is a simple re-release with a bug fix here and there too much to ask now that we have the eShop?

FE7 is a good game to start on if you want to play traditional FE with a nice level of difficulty and a cool story

all though personally i believe FE8 to be more newbie friendly due to grinding opportunities in the game

FE9 is also a good game to start on same reason as FE7. that and Ike is pretty rad dude

but thats just my opinion

I'd rather have FE1-6/12 translated officially. And a FE2 remake.

Than simple rereleases of FE7-11.

My main gripe about 9 (besides Ike the lord of shit) is the support system, I hate having to wait for Chapter 24 for A rank and the reletive lacking of bonuses when Earth is not involved.

That and it's kinda boring story isn't backed up by stellar map design.

Overall, it's got a pretty generic feel to it, and although 6 does too, 6 at least is a fun challenge in terms of map design.

I found FE7 with little difficulty, but that's coming from someone who bought FE9 at $25 in 2012.

7, 8, and 9 are all great games to start on. I personally recommend to start on FE7 because it has unskippable tutorial-esque chapters that would probably be more fun when you're fresh to the series, and the GBA ones cost less than the console ones. There is pretty much no wrong choice, though.
