Hello,

Upon request I repost this here.

[Original topic]

BoNam’oLafs

I present you a simple IPS patch for FE8 created using Nightmare.

It’s gameplay oriented (possibly has higher difficulty) and doesn’t include any changes to the storyline or new units.

(… Ugh. Sorry. I told a little lie … But don’t expect anything unexpected.)

Let’s take a look at some pictures:

1.png2.png

You’ll be recruiting almost only monsters to your army.

The game starts of as usual with Seth getting owned.

3.png4.png

I tried to colour everyone properly (but some classes seem to not like their new palettes).

Watch out for light magic as it’s effective against monsters now. (Mhh . . . Purge . . . )

5.png6.png

No unpromoted healers this time. So don’t let Moulder hog any non-staff experience.

Almost no equipment was left the way it was before. Especially legendary weapons are more effect oriented than strong now.

7.png8.png

Stats changed of course. (This picture is from Eirika route btw. Forde turned out surprisingly bad on Ephraim route.)

Huh? Is it just ... laughing? Classes changed. Check.

9.png91.png

Monsters will get their own legendary weapon as well. And just like the others it will also be used by a boss.

Only lords, dancer and dragon remain unchanged ... not?

92.png93.png

If you encounter him on your first visit to the tower remember:

The map menu features a selection named “Retreat”. (Not like anyone used that in the normal game.)

On the other hand you’ll have to accept fighting these on the first level of the ruins. (Well actually this is the lowest level Wight I found.)

I’ve also hidden some surprises for you.

Give it a try!

Important notes:

  • This is to be played on difficult mode.
  • When offered to promote Eirika/Ephraim take the promotion items instead. The story promotion will choose the wrong classes.
  • I tried to change all cutscenes as well but some won’t work and some crash when changed.
  • Hero’s Proof: Renevant, Bael, Mauthedoog
Knight’s Crest: Bonewalker (w/o bow), Tarvos
    The others should be obvious.
  • When deciding on branched promotions: Wights get to use swords, spears and bows. Cyclops and Deathgoyle get a critical bonus.
And let’s say the Arch Mogall is more of an all-rounder while the Gorgon is more specialised. You can find out about the other classes yourself.
  • Use common sense: Don’t promote a Mogall to a Gorgon on top of a mountain.

Comments on things that need to be fixed are appreciated.

Otherwise I pronounce this completed. Feel free to correct me on this matter.

Here it is. Have fun:

Additional notes:

  • This was designed for difficult mode. Easy mode won't work at all and normal mode might give weird results in difficulty.
  • I'll give you a hint which classes can use lockpicks: It's the same units that are pilfering your vulneraries. [spoiler=If you still don't have a clue]Renevant&Entombed

[Edit:] OOps, this somehow ended up in the wrong forum. Could someone please relocate it?

There's a bug in Chapter 5. One of the brigands that spawns turns into a playable Tarvos. O_o

On the prologue of difficult mode, I used Eirika to attack the first enemy and my game froze? O.o

The animations are set to 2 for battle and I made get put to fast and disabled auto end and auto cursor.

Hello,

And the strangest part is, it even changes his name.

The animations are set to 2 for battle and I made get put to fast and disabled auto end and auto cursor.

Works fine fo me, even with your settings. Maybe you should simply retry everything from the start.

Just beat it. Thoughts in a spoiler:

I had a lot of fun, though the difficulty becomes kind of laughable when you start getting those infinite use Sacred Twins, Warp and Hammerne. Especially Garm is completely ridiculous. The only non trivial parts are the last few bosses, which have the "lol high stats = difficult" label on them. They are just a matter of pitting the right unit against them and waiting for their insane defenses to give in. Garm's luna effect and +5 spd got me past most of them, though against some bosses I had to use Ephraim instead since he's not a monster (and therefore not weak to Light magic).

Units I used and thoughts on them:

Eirika: Useful early on, I like the 50 use Rapier. For some reason she can promote right away...I raised her a bit in unpromoted form before she became practically useless against anything. Then I promoted her and she rarely did anything ever, since she's so frail. Sieglinde, like every damn Twin, has 1-2 range, and the animation for that is pretty cool. But I wouldn't say Eirika is good overall.

Ephraim: I played Eirika route, so I only got to use him for a little bit. When I got him back in the desert, he was alright, but since I noticed Hammerne had infinite uses I abused the hell out of Reginleif and he got a lot of levels in the south. Then I promoted him (twice, lolol...the promo bonuses suck though), and he became very clutch for being mounted and not a monster. The fact that he carries his own Sacred Twin around means he doesn't take it from someone else, so that's definitely nice. The only bad thing about him is that his low Spd cap stops him from doubling some things (eg the Ch19 Mage Knights), and it even gets him doubled by the most powerful bosses. Minor issues in the grand scheme of things.

Tana: Because Vanessa worked out so well and so few units had good movement, I raised her. No regrets. Keep forgetting Gargoyles don't have Canto though. Absolutely no reason to promote her to Wight: flying is hax. Bright Lance Gargoyles in monster chapters = gg.

Moulder: Nice to have a non-vulnerable healer, though his Luk is so bad I defended him like mad anyway. When you get all the really good staves, his level goes up to the infinite, or in my case L20, and he actually gets really good stats...plus Nosferatu. Being able to Latona every turn, even twice with Tethys's help, was sickeningly broken.

Artur: Flying eyeball -> flying eyeball...I was going Gorgon but it was Ch12 and I realized flying is so much better than staves. He started out really really weak but I'm glad I ended up using him because of Light's effectiveness vs monsters, especially Ivaldi with its +5 def and enormous Mt. I should prolly have given him the Body Ring instead of Saleh.

Gilliam: Great tank, practically invincible versus everything for a long, long time. But he doesn't get to use any of those Sacred Twins and 6 mov still isn't enough compared to my Boots Vanessa or even Ephraim or Ross/Garcia, so later he kind of dropped off. I gave him that Stone Shard weapon that Lyon dropped but even that didn't really help him too much. He was ok at what he could do: chokepointing.

Vanessa: I raised her right off the bat and never regretted it. No Canto or mounted Aid was annoying, but otherwise really really powerful. Like I said with Tana, flying Bright Lance is so useful.

Ross: What a baller. At first he was obviously inferior to Garcia, but I wanted to use both since I was severely lacking in units that were actually REALLY mounted. Once he hit Garcia's speed and went past that, I never looked back. The Fiendcleaver was a nice moneysaver, but the real ballin' began when I got Garm, which was basically a power for speed trade-off against most enemies (since it has 0 Mt, but Luna effect and gives +5 spd). Ross got most of the hard bosses for me.

Garcia: Basically, he and Ross were my mounted guys. Mine is sitting at L8 promoted right now with only 18 Spd after a Wing, which was the major reason why he wasn't as useful...but he was still nice to have around. Before enemies went completely insane, he carried a large amount of weight around.

Joshua: I just wanted to make use of an infinite use 30 crt weapon without "taking" it from him, tbh, even though I could just have given those Fang weapons to Gilliam. His leveling went kind of slow because of the 1-range lock and rather bad attack...if he didn't crit, he didn't kill. That said I love the dog animation and he was fun to have around. In Ch20 he just kept on bashing all the Cyclopses for like 2x3 or 2x4 with an occasional crit, it was fun to watch. OOOOOOWOOOOOOO

Tethys: Can heal. When she first used Recover on Gerik I thought for a moment you found out how to make the AI dance. :( Her healing isn't very useful because she can just dance for a Gorgon who can then heal, but it was a nice novelty. I like the insane growths.

Saleh: I noticed prepromotes in general seemed very good in this game. I didn't actually plan to long term use Saleh, until I found out about infinite use Sacred Twins and decided I wanted Excalibur. I raised his weapon rank with Ewan's weird 0 mt brave Thunder tome, and then enjoyed how Excalibur was brave as well. More flying units around is always good.

Other notes:

- I was actually trying to raise Colm because generally these "difficulty" hax require a raised thief to steal some items, but Colm sucks sooo much. Rotten Claw is weak, and anything else gets the guy doubled. Rennac's stats were really really good compared to his and I didn't even always need them, so it was a waste of EXP in every word.

- I laughed when I saw how good some prepromos like Innes and Dozla were. I didn't end up using them though because my own team held up fine.

- I was going to use Cormag, but not enough unit slots.

- Putting Latona on the Ch18 Gorgon boss was genius, but he doesn't seem to want to use it. If he had used it, I would've shat bricks.

- Fuck Ch17 Lyon, I just had to wait out reinforcements and then slowly whittle him down with Ephraim and Ross. Fake difficulty at its finest, oh well.

- Ch10 Eirika route was a nightmare because Innes and Gerik kept leaving Tethys exposed. I had to do what I usually try to avoid: recruit them ASAP. This requires entering Marisa's little scene where she starts moving, which forces me to recruit her, which causes the reinforcements to appear. It all went well when I actually recruited the green guys, though.

It was fun going all out with Sacred Twins at the end, but it also kind of stopped all real difficulty. Generic enemies hardly mattered in the face of all those 1-2 range juggernauts. Still very enjoyable, would play again. And now to own the Creature Campaign...
