I already know that all melee weapons give 1 weapon experience, but would a character who doubles in battle receive 2 weapon exp?

I'm planning to get Karin to B in swords before chapter 13, but it seems like a pretty big stretch especially since she doesn't gain sword rank on promotion.

IIRC, WEXP has always been granted per hit until Shadow Dragon so yes...

I've managed to get Karin to B for Chapter 14 but that was through much favoritism and sword use.

Alright, thanks for the clarification.

Yeah, I want her to be able to use the flame sword to blast the ballistae in ch.13, but 80 wexp is a tough obstacle to overcome.

It really depends on how fast you play to be honest. I had trouble getting machua to C swords by the end of manster chapters to be honest (though Fergus reached A  ).

Fergus starts at C +30 and is already a much better unit than Machua in general, who starts at D +30. Karin is even worse due to lower strength, PCC and sword rank (D +20), but as a whole there's plenty of reinforcements you can use your skills on throughout the game.

Personally my kind of thing is to have Dagda with a B in bows, Asvel with A in fire/thunder and Eyrios with A in wind. Anything's possible with a bit of favoritism, and the game likes to throw tons of reinforcements in this game, like chapter 4 or chapter 13.

there's always the arena as well, although it's pretty risky in this game.

It won't work for everyone. For someone like Karin, it could since you just need to dismount her. But for someone like Dagda, he's going to be forced to use axes.

The arena isn't that bad with scrolls and some PCC at any rate.
