Dat Rules (borrowed/stolen from Integrity)

- Ratings are assumed to be on Hard Mode (JP Maniac).

- Votes need some explanation regarding their gameplay performance to be counted. If somebody else said what you want to already, quote them explicitly.

+/- ≤1 point extra regarding personality/appearance is encouraged, but no more. If you exercise your bias privileges, please do so explicitly.

- Numerical votes out of 10, or something proportional to it. Make it easy to calculate for my sake.

- Every ranking phase ends whenever I get out of bed, between 0700 and 0800 EST. Do the math for your timezone, Brits.

- I will insist you do not use the "Not X" reason on any character, where X is another unit. If you do, your vote will be thrown out.

- "Recruits X" or "takes you to X chapter" arguments are explicitly banned. C'mon, people, this shouldn't need to be a rule. That's not gameplay performance.

- Assume that the character in question is being recruited.

- Similar to the "Recruits X" rule, do not use "she brings a Savior to the team" as an argument.

- BEXP is free to be used in any quantity on any character.

- Skills can be reassigned freely.

- No transfers.

- I withhold the privilege to tell you your rating is bogus and demand you revise it if it breaks any of the above. I will not throw out votes anonymously, you will be informed and given a chance to revise.

Great ability and a focus on the best weapon type for her class, but that's about the long and short of it. She's not that good, unfortunately, with merely decent bases and a low SPD growth (although an okay base for Part 1, you need to grow in this game). I think her base level is honestly too low; what was she doing all through PoR? Even eating the whole time would give more experience than she's got to start with. Even so, Thunder is pretty cool overall.

She's also the engine by which phat lewt is ferried to the GMs at the end of Part 1 if you're into that, so go her for being a pack mule I guess.

Use for a few chapters, then she stops being able to hit stuff, and then stops being able to damage stuff. Dat speed growth is just too damn low. Still, she is a handy wall in Part 1 in the chapter you get her, and for a few after, so 5/10 from me.

a not so awful unit in P1. Integral for her item transferage. But like Dorcas before her, max availability is only worth so much when your spd growth is super fail.

This isnt PoR. Thunder is extremely mediocre in this game. I would say its the worst magic type aside from nuking Dracoknights. I find myself using Fire forges a lot more than any other type of magic because of its better MT.

Like in POR. Fails to get a good amount of speed and in this game u have to forge her thunder tomes in more hit. Since hit% of them got nerfed in this game! I would give her Adapt and have her only use Wind and Thunder tomes. Don't bank on her being helpful in Part IV. Unless u invest bonus EXP into her. Which might be a good idea. Since Sage caps got nerfed in this game as well...it will be hard to get her to do the third to the last battle in the game. Since she likely gets doubled by him. Advised to have her use disapline to get her to use better tomes and staves quicker. Since she should be used without having Rexbolt to end up collecting dust otherwise. Give her Earth affinity support to make her better. She can be good in the HM too with some bonus EXP investment. Since she has more availibility than any other character in the game. She is easiest to train than anyone else; and can be used to transport items in the Grail Mercs, like Celerity and such. Good con too.

She's not a Thunder Mage forever. Well okay she probably is because she sucks, but if you promote her she can start using other stuff. But she isn't much good for anything but those early Part 3 wyverns anyway, might as well have Thunder to use against them.

Magic sucks enough that I still consider the effective damage on wyverns/dragons more useful than anything the other magics do, if only because you actually fight a fair number of wyverns and dragons. If the DB had a Fire Mage who actually sticks around for a while I might change my tune (3-6 with Elfire would be nice), but with Calill and Tormod pretty much never existing it's kinda meh. I guess Soren or Ilyana can use Fire, but... again, meh.

But she starts off as one. Her class is Thunder Mage. How could a Thunder Mage specialise in anything other than thunder magic?

Magic sucks enough that I still consider the effective damage on wyverns/dragons more useful than anything the other magics do, if only because you actually fight a fair number of wyverns and dragons.

You fight far more Paladins, Generals, Snipers, Halberdiers, Warriors, Bishops, Sages, and Swordmasters than Wyverns and Dragons, and Fire magic is better against all of them.

5.5/10 includes +1 bias

Her P1 is not so good since she gets OHKO'd by Steel Axe Fighters, so she must be aware of them, or take advantage of Bio/terrain bonus (thickets). Also, her hit rate is somehow low and unreliable to hit/kill enemies, specially 1-E where enemies have +10 hit/avoid. Her early P3 is pretty bad since she, mostly, gets double by swordmasters and gets crt'd. Her offense isn't all that great so she'll need a forged tome, preferably fire to be able to 2HKO enemies like berdiers, warriors, gens, snipers and SMs, typical enemies in P3. She'll be needing good training and quick to be able to be useful. There's 3-5 where she can Adept Meteor Lombrosso for a low turn, I doubt she can get to 3rd tier by that chapter, though...whatever. It's good for her to go to Silver Route and get that Resolve and kill enemies, however she can get easily killed with it due to her low sp unless you get both sp and lck blessed. But she doesn't stay one, and this is a post about Ilyana, not about Thunder Mage as a class. It should be pretty obvious that "her class" refers not just to Thunder Mage, but to her promotions as well, as it refers generally to what her class may be at any particular moment. Are you actually making a point here (no) or are you being contrary solely for the sake of it (yes)? It's not as though I intimated she could or should use something else during Part 1 when she doesn't have anything else.

Also even if I were to take your phrasing of things, if you focus on only one weapon type because there's only one available it technically still is the best one for your class. It would be accurate, but also self-evident, to say "Edward specializes in swords, which are the best weapon for his class." Pointing out after that statement that swords are the only thing Edward's class uses is correct, and also incredibly pedantic.

I only sort of factored in her ability to transfer items, and mostly as an availability thing. I don't know if it's against the rules or anything, as it's certainly a semi-unique utility on her part. She can take a bunch of things the DB may not want or need in 1-E and bring it to the GMs who have more maps in Part 3 to use said items.

But the counter-argument to that would be "she's not really doing anything, she's just having her inventory filled up due to an availability quirk." I suppose both are valid.

Sure, if Merlinus wasn't a regenerating unit that serves a 1 time use in a huge trade chain, and didn't hold 50+ crapthings for virtually the entire game, then yes, she would just be a tent/horsedrawn carraige disguised as a hungry girl.

Needs to steal EXP from the Dawn Brigade in order to be usable by the time she re-joins in Part 3, but she can definitely help out the DB in a few of their early chapters (1-3 to 1-5). She'll most likely ORKO dragons in 4-E-3 with Rexbolt, but it takes so much favoritism to get to that point and even then she'll be pretty mediocre. She also has the lowest speed cap out of all beorc units! -1 bias because I hate her.

Well what do you know. Even with max HP and Defense she's getting 1HKO'd by Dheginsea. She can take a hit with a Night Tide/Cover bonus, though.

I'd give her a 4/10. Being the only thunder mage in a game that seems to hate thunder magic doesn't really help much. Plus, she's got terrible speed and defense. The only good use I can really find for her is transferring items thanks to her availability. Even though thunder magic is effective against dragons, she still has a good chance of getting doubled/killed by Dheginsea thanks to her crap speed. Since transfers aren't being taken into account, her stats (except strength, but...it's strength. for a mage.) are overall not up to par with the other available mages, especialy speed-wise.

Ilyana....is still hungry.

Pros:

Is around for like, the whole game. (aside from part 2)

Can use that there Rexbolt (for Big D death later)

Can ferry items to the GMs (yes! THAT IS USEFUL! fuck the police!)

Good defense for a mage.

Ok in part 1.

Cons:

Shitass speed.

Low magic base. (and it doesnt get that much better.)

Still a flat and annoying character.

....Ilyana....One of the returning characters that actually got shittier during the span of three years. Sure shes around for like, ever, but that doesnt help her much. If you spam her in part 1, she COULD be almost viable to the GMs. Almost. Thing is though, her speed sucks the wanky. It will always suck the wanky. Even with transfers, it will suck the wanky. If you want to bother with her, a speedwing is necessary. I managed for her to cap defense once. That was interesting. So she can be kinda tanky for her class. Her magic is actually kinda dumpy. She isnt hitting that hard. She can wreck shit with the Rexbolt in endgame but ehh. She is kinda useful in part 1 but ehh. After a couple of chapters, her speed ends up cursing her. Ilyana really does want transfers if she is going to be used. I do like that she can transfer items to the GMs. Thats why i never kill her off or anything. I find that so goddamn useful....

4/10. 3/10 bias. Shes still annoyingly flat and bitching about food.

Crappy speed and durability and move...even her Mag isn't great. Good availability doesn't count for much when you're bad for almost all of it. At least her chip is a little useful.
