I usually pick Sonia because there's no really good mage on Celica's team. May is okayish and Boey is plain bad. Sonia has pretty great Gaiden growths and her bases are also okay (plus 1-2 or 1-3 range is nice). Plus you already have Saber and Kamui, who are both good enough to use. But like SRC said, it wouldn't make TOO much difference.

Ok, so I'll stick with my gut and take Sonia.

Since i'm already asking opinions, for laughs i'll ask the standard "who should i use?" question now that my roster is expanding.

For Alm's Team, I don't know. I know most suggest Cliff, though he's not proven himself overly much yet. My Grey is doing alright, and so is Robin, so maybe I have a backwards game. I like my Clerbe/Cleive and Clea, so i'll likely use them. I love silk's warp magic, so she's likely in.

On Celica's route, the pegasus duo (soon to be Trio on my file) already rock, so that seems a good choice. May and Jenny are doing good too, and sonia is supposed to be good as well.

I can just imagine getting these two teams together... i'll be all mages and pegasus knights lol. I know to use my best judgement, but any tips or ideas i may be forgetting?

Robin is usually shite for me, Gray is great, Cliff, as a mage, nice. That's been my usual experiences with the game, as a comparison.

Clerics are essential: Silk and Jenny (and Teeta from Chapter 4) should be on every team. Cliff's main benefits are his amazing growths; I don't know how far in you are but Cliff is only going to get better and Robin is only going to get worse. I'd recommend the two archers (Python and Leo) because bows are amazing in this game.

Beyond that, just take your chances. Gaiden is a rare FE where you can feasibly train and field everyone with a little effort but over time units will show their true colours. There's also an ongoing series of 'Rate the Unit' topics with some opinions and analysis for you to have a look at but take them with a pinch of salt and play the game as you see fit, not as someone else tells you.

Hehe. I am LOVING the angel ring. I really wish I could have found more earlier, but oh well. With this handy device, i've leveled up my lower level people to great heights. My Atlas is rather insane IMO. But I'm starting to get bored of grinding, and I'm not sure how much I want to do. The guide suggests A TON and I have a hard time believing it's all needed. The main ten of Celllica's team currently looks like this:

Celica Lv 7 Royal HP 40 POW 33 DEF 14 SKL 21 SPD 18 LCK 20
Jenny Lv 14 Cleric HP 21 POW 23 DEF 6 SKL 13 SPD 7 LCK 7
May Lv 14 Mage HP 27 POW 25 DEF 8 SKL 7 SPD 9 LCK 5
Sonia Lv 8 Mage HP 30 POW 19 DEF 5 SKL 13 SPD 12 LCK 4
Atlas LV11 Cavalier HP 42 POW 34 DEF 13 SKL 15 SPD 5 LCK 4
Saber Lv 9 Mymidon HP44 POW 21 DEF 21 SKL 13 SPD 16 LCK 6
Leo Lv 10 Sniper HP 42 POW 22 DEF 16 SKL 12 SPD 8 LCK 6
Catria LV 12 Pegasus Knight HP 33 POW 21 DEF 7 SKL 16 SPD 14 LCK 14
Palla Lv 16 Pegasus Knight HP 42 POW 26 DEF 10 SKL 17 SP 12 LCK 4
Est Lv 7 Pegasus Knight HP 26 POW 17 DEF 12 SKL 7 SPD 11 LCK 11

I know I could train more, but i don't want the game being too easy either. What do you think, o mysterious people on the internet? :)

Well, I did a few more battles to specifically level Sonia and Est to the rest of the team, and then went to Arum/Alm's group. His guys need some help compared to Celica's, so I'm looking for a good place to level them up. I could use the never ending battles in the thief shrine or liberation HQ, but i hear the Fear shrine in the beginning of chapter 4 is really good. Is that true? I might try to struggle through chapter 3 and train there if that's the case, but I figured i'd check here and see what people thought. Plus, I like being social and talking to people, and my wife doesn't get games like this lol. So yea, keep the conversation flowing! Woo hoo! :)

Fear shrine consists of multiple battles. The EXP gain is way better than the chapter 1 shrines, but I found the shrine to be pretty difficult myself (I didn't do any repeated battles at all so that could also be my characters being underleveled). There's a few mummies in there, though, which give really great EXP and are very weak monsters (ideal for leveling up Silk).

In chapter 4C you get a really great EXP battle, you get to fight about 8 mummies in one battle!

Chapter 3 with Alm's team is where I nearly got into an incredibly difficult ambush-fight because I neglected to grind. I spent some time wondering whether I could even win the fight so I'd recommend stopping and going to grind before Chapter 4. I personally prefer the thief shrine over liberation HQ and the forest shrine because Thieves have a higher exp yield and there is a (very, very slim) chance you might see an angel ring. Also I find fighting monsters dull.

The holy grail of grinding on Alm's side is the secret shrine near the end of Chapter 4 after Celica's team have finished; you can find plenty of Mummies in the secret shrine and (as I imagine you've noticed by now) they have a crazy exp yield. Celica's team actually have it much easier: save (or savestate) in the mountain village, leave and get into a battle in the graveyard, check the enemies and if you don't see Mummies reload and repeat. Protip.

The translation patch I have has that one purple haired loser named "Bird" instead of "Robin" and I consider this an improvement.

Otherwise I think I've played three or four stages total. I should really give it another shot.

Well, I finally beat this game. I didn't grind to to the max - I didn't even use all the final promotion levels lol - but the game was 'easy' enough. I am going to make a new topic to start on Mystery of the Emblem, and continue my experience of playing all of the old school fire emblems! Wish me luck :)

I'm starting through Fe2 for the first time as well and Katua dies the first map she can be played on taking the Angel Ring with her. I hate the AI on other units.

Yea, their AI isn't so smart, but it makes it challenging to try and rescue them from themselves. I hear you can glitch them off of the map by retreating and doing the battle again (or something akin to that if I'm mistaken). Still, AI aside, I really did enjoy this fire emblem a lot more than I first thought I would.

Good job on completing this game so quickly! If you're going to play it again, you may want to try to not grind during your playthrough (if you played on easy mode this you could also try to just play on normal mode next time). By now, you should know which characters are good and which are not so it should not be too difficult :)

And by retreating and re-entering the battle, Catria and Palla have left indeed. It's what I did during my latest playthrough.

I really did like Gaiden quite a bit. Thing is, my best characters were ones I didn't expect, like Atlas, Gray, and Clerbe/Cleive. Cliff, who is supposed to rock, ended up being the first character I dropped. I tend to think every play through is unique, and it all comes down to luck, you know? No one, no matter how 'good' they are supposed to be is going to be good every time.
