Thanks.

BTW, does anyone know how to navigate to this "event" (or at least see the details)? I've never been to Reddit before o__o

He should be posting the thread here

it'll say something like, I am Yusuke Kozaki, AMA. just keep an eye out tomorrow, around the time he's said he would start the AMA.

Actually it's here, r/AMA and r/iAMA are totally different.

Edit: To clarify r/iAMA is the correct one. Not r/AMA.

Appears the AMA is over, the EDIT 2 on the OP is saying he has no more time

Here are the FE related questions

In addition to the character Katarina from the DLC, were there any other legacy Fire Emblem characters that you would have liked to illustrate for Fire Emblem Awakening?

Ike from Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn

Good evening, Mr. Kozaki! In Fire Emblem Awakening, is there a particular character you feel closely connected with? All of their designs are unique by their personalities, so which character do you see yourself as?

Vaike. I feel close considering the personality, not the design..

Were you a fan of the Fire Emblem series before doing the designs for Awakening?

Actually no. I hadn't played the game before I started to do the design. I didn't know a lot about the game. But that also means I wasn't influenced by the previous designs, so I could work more freely.

Hello Mr. Kozaki! Thanks for this AMA.

As a big fan of Fire Emblem, I know that many fans initially questioned the character designs for Awakening -- common complaints include eccentric dress and more sexualization and fanservice (1, 2, 3) than the series is typically known for. What inspired you to take this design approach with the series?

To me they were not design with fanservice or sexualization mind. The characters personalities are what led to their design.

How do you personally feel about Tharja's massive popularity among Fire Emblem fans? Could you explain how you approached this character when designing her?

This character has a very dark aura, but she likes the main characters very much.. She could be considered a stalker in another view. This is the only Fire Emblem Character whose figure has been manufactured here in Japan.

Are there any characters that you designed for Fire Emblem that got scrapped during development? Or any characters that you wished would have been included but didn't?

There were a lot of characters to draw, so there was no big shock when characters who were dropped.

When you were designing Fire Emblem characters, did you get any specific instructions as to what each character should look like? Or did they just let your imagination roam free? Also, is there any chance of Knights of Iris being localized?

From the production company, I got the personality of each character. I designed the character from this concept. I did a few designs for each character, and the production company chose from these.

Just wondering, which character in FE:A was your favorite to design? Also, what was your primary inspiration for the design of armored characters (e.g Social Knights and especially Armor Knights)?

Lucina. For the armored charcters, the art director designed the armor, and I designed the characters in the armor

Right... of course... Because Olivia is so shy and hates being stared at, she gets the skimpiest outfit in the army... Right...that makes sense.

Poor guy downvoted by trolls... I am proud of the poster he spoke the truth none could muster to speak... The female designs in this game are retardedly over sexualized... Kozaki was clearly 100% lying too... -_- you can't get those kind of designs especially ones that go against character w/out trying to maximize fan service (almost all of them which felt out of place... and if you were going by the characters would not have existed)

I wonder if Kozaki was really serious with that answer. I never got the expression that "personality" was a huge factor for the art.

I mean, the artwork for the males is awesome. No matter what you think of the style, they are all very expressive. None of them failed me to give an initial expression about the characters.

The women on the other hand... I've must really have spend quite a bit of time looking at the faces of Tiki, Panne and Olivia, and I still can't figure out what they are supposed to express.

Indeed. Olivia's official art is anything but shy and timid. Cordelia's official art doesn't show what a conflicted perfectionist she is. And Tiki, yeah no, that pose is nothing like her.

Because Secret Spa of Bonds is not sexualized at all....

obviously it was never meant sexually

obviously it was just intended as a scientific study of the bathing habits of the female animes and any fanservice people see in it is just a boner-influenced hallucination

obviously

I get the feeling he probably misinterpreted? He probably designed the characters and then drew sexy OAs, and IS chose what they wanted. In fact, Olivia's OA doesn't seem seem like her final design, since her arm bands changed and she has things attached to her back in-game but not in the art. You can't say the in-game art doesn't reflect personality pretty well, which is what you're going to be seeing all the time, not the promotional pieces done for press. The Secret Spa DLC was likely an after-the-fact thing, based on the results of a popularity poll, as Chrom and Gaius are pretty sexed up also for the ladies. The confessions are clearly fanservice but those are a post-design thing as well.

What's with the prudes? It's not like making the character art sexy takes away anything from Awakening's quality. Some people enjoy sexuality, and given his portfolio it wouldn't even be a stretch to assume Kozaki Yuusuke does so himself. You people have an issue with an artist expressing what they want through their art?

Kozaki's art cannot be faulted for its technical quality, can it? The FE team probably wanted something striking and expressive, they got what they wanted. Given fan reception, the buying audience seems to have as well. Does a little bit of sexuality (and not even really within the game itself) really bother you guys that much?

Kozaki's art is a benefit to Awakening IMHO, not that I really knew who he was prior to this Q&A session. Awakening's art is probably the most attractive I've ever seen from the series, not that that stopped me from playing the hell out of Blazing Sword or Path of Radiance. Having gotten back into the series after missing out the DS games, I fully look forward to buying and playing through all of Awakening's DLC content--fanservice maps included.

For the record, I find Olivia and Nowi's outfits fully consistent with their personalities.

*typo in my other post, should read "may not"

I've no problem with fan service, but this game went a bit overboard; I've seen ridiculous images of Panne, Nowi, Cordelia (visible garters), Sumia (with and without her breastplate), Tharja, Cherche (her outfit doesn't seem consistent with her personality, occupation, etc.), Say'ri, Tiki, and probably more. I just listed the majority of the first-gen women. Also, the Grimleal Dark Fliers have ridiculously large breasts and/or insane push-up bras.

Do explain why Olivia ("Everyone's staring! How embarrassing...") would choose to dress the way she does when a less revealing outfit gets the job done. I've not read any of Nowi's support conversations, but her wearing a band-aid (as is the case in the game) seems no more consistent with how I would imagine her personality than would her wearing an outfit similar to, well, what normal people wear.

Olivia's whole point is that she does contradictory things. Inigo is incredibly shy, but he goes all out when it comes to wooing the ladies because his mom told him it would help him. She clearly wants to be noticed and then gets cold feet when she starts to feel self-conscious, but she's trying to overcome her own fears and live out her dream of building a theatre where she can perform and be admired by everyone. And like she says, once she gets going she doesn't worry what she's wearing or doing.

And, OH NO VISIBLE GARTERS BOO HOO, is all I have to say about that. Did you know that my mom used to wear garters as part of her school uniform in Hong Kong in the 50's? And that such a garment was commonplace until nylon became more accessible? It isn't just a piece of fetish wear, though you can go ahead and fetishize it all you want. And with regards to Nowi, it is a slightly uncomfortable pose for the OA, but her in-game portrait is actually not particularly offensive. Pegasus knights in this game don't really wear dresses any shorter than the norm for this series. Over half the games feature them without any sort of pants, FE4 had high leg slits which are arguably just a different form of sex appeal, and the Elibe games had both high leg slits AND short skirts. All I'm seeing in this thread is a lack of awareness of anything before FE9, with people shutting their ears and going lalalalala. You don't have to agree with the "sexy" art from Kozaki, but you'd have to criticize the series as a whole. And if you read some of the other Q&A, Kozaki mentioned that the armor designs weren't entirely his own, but were given to him by the art director.

Quote about the art director thing:

Q: Just wondering, which character in FE:A was your favorite to design? Also, what was your primary inspiration for the design of armored characters (e.g Social Knights and especially Armor Knights)?

A:Lucina. For the armored charcters, the art director designed the armor, and I designed the characters in the armor

Q:When you were designing Fire Emblem characters, did you get any specific instructions as to what each character should look like? Or did they just let your imagination roam free? Also, is there any chance of Knights of Iris being localized?

A: From the production company, I got the personality of each character. I designed the character from this concept. I did a few designs for each character, and the production company chose from these.
