Chapter 19: Remorse and Retaliation

On the World Map

The next day after Dorias departed for Alster, Leaf gathered the remaining troops and prepared to leave as well.

However, just as he was about to start on his way, one of Dorias’
messengers came rushing to him back from Alster.

His words were the beginning of a long and difficult task for Leaf…

Opening Cutscene

Leaf:
“August, are we ready to head for Alster?”

August:
“Prince, someone has arrived at the castle. Probably one of Count Dorias’ messengers…”

Messenger:
“Prince Leaf! …Forgive us…”

Leaf:
“What? What happened?”

Messenger:
“The Imperial Army struck back at us… We were…decimated…”

Leaf:
“What!? What about Dorias? Where is he!”

Messenger:
“Count Dorias… He charged at the enemy to make time for our escape, and he…fell…”

Leaf:
“!!”

Messenger:
“If only we were stronger… Forgive us, Lord Leaf!”

Leaf:
“That… That can’t be…”

August:
“Lord Leaf, our troops are retreating. We must hurry, or we will be annihilated for good. We need to lead our troops to safety…”

Leaf:
“How…could this happen…”

August:
“Prince! Get a hold of yourself! If we let our troops die out, Count Dorias’ death will be for nothing! We must rescue as many troops as we can!”

(Scene switches to Blume)

Blume:
“You filthy maggots, no one stands before the Empire and survives! I shall leave the rest to you, Wolf. Swear to the Freejis that you will recapture Lenster!”

Wolf:
“Yes, my lord!”

(Scene switches to Conomore)

Conomore:
“Many of our people have died… But as long as I stay alive, so will Alster…”

(Scene switches to Amalda)

Amalda:
“Protecting my troops is my duty… But…is this right…?
Please tell me, Father Sleuf… What must I do…?”

Conversation (Miranda, Conomore)

Miranda:
“Conomore! Stop!”

Conomore:
“Princess Miranda!? What are you doing here?”

Miranda:
“I was rescued by Prince Leaf. He tried to save Alster for me…and he lost many of his troops and a close advisor. But what are you doing! You have Alster’s elite troops, and yet you tag along behind the Empire?”

Conomore:
“Yes… Forgive me, my lady…”

Miranda:
“Our enemy is not Lenster. The Empire is our hated foe. Command your troops to aid the Lenster Army’s escape!
Alster will now join the Northern Thracian Liberation Army under the command of Prince Leaf!”

Conomore:
“Yes, my lady. Reporting to all troops! We are now joining the Liberation Army. Aid their escape with all your strength! We will go under the protection of Lenster until we recapture Alster. This is a direct order from Princess Miranda herself!”

Conversation (Sleuf, Amalda)

Sleuf:
“Lady Amalda, please withdraw your blade. It is me, Sleuf.”

Amalda:
“Father Sleuf… What are you doing here?”

Sleuf:
“I have come for you, my lady. The Liberation Army is waiting for you.”

Amalda:
“Are you telling me to betray my country? I can’t do that, Father Sleuf… I wouldn’t be suffering like this if I could.”

Sleuf:
“Lady Amalda, a nation isn’t the personal property of the king and nobility. If they have been misled, it is the knight’s duty to see to it that their paths be corrected. Are you going to let your country do wrong for fear of being labeld a traitor?”

Amalda:
“No… But when I think about what will happen to my troops…”

Sleuf:
“…You are a kind lady. However, what they do is up to them. You should follow your own heart more freely.”

Amalda:
“…Very well, Father Sleuf. I will join the Liberation Army. I will rescue the kidnapped children! That is my only wish!”

Fighting Wolf

Wolf:
“Do you wish to fall before my blade as well?”

Defeating Wolf

Wolf:
“Gwah…! How…could I…”

Fighting Amalda

Amalda:
“Withdraw your blade! There is no need to die for nothing!”

Defeating Amalda

Amalda:
“It’s all right… This is how…a blood-covered murdurer like me…should die…”

Releasing Amalda

Amalda:
“What… What am I doing…”

Fighting Conomore

Conomore:
“For Alster!”

Defeating Conomore

Conomore:
“May Alster…rise to glory…once again…”

Releasing Conomore

Conomore:
“So I am to live in shame… But I must live all the same…”

After Leaf escapes

August:
“The Empire is starting a full-scale assault. We can’t defend out here…we should retreat to the castle for now.”

Leaf:
“August, this is my mistake. I was so foolish… Dorias…it’s like I killed him.”

August:
“This isn’t the time for that, Lord Leaf. You can apologize to Count Dorias all you want, after we defend Lenster from the Empire.”

Leaf:
“Yes…”

August:
“Don’t look like that, we have good news as well. I hear that a large rebellion has erupted in the east in Isaac, and that they are fighting well against the Empire. Do you know who the leader of the rebels is?”

Leaf:
“Prince Shanan of Isaac, right? Finn told me about him. He’s an honorable man, skilled with his sword and loved by his people. What a difference from me…”

August:
“Yes, Prince Shanan is with them. But their leader is smeone else.”

Leaf:
“What?”

August:
“Lord Celice of Chalphy… The Isaacians call him the
‘Child of Light.'”

Leaf:
“Lord Celice!? …Really?”

August:
“Yes. Ah, Lord Celice’s father was your uncle. Lord Sigurd… He was called a villain just a decade ago, but now he’s quite popular. He recognized the schemes of the Emperor before anyone else, and died fighting to protect the world. Bards spread his story far and wide, and now he’s become a legendary hero. And his son, Lord Celice, is fighting to fulfill his father’s wishes… The people are overjoyed. They wouldn’t hesitate to give their lives to his cause. It’s the perfect scenario.”

Leaf:
“…What are you trying to say?”

August:
“What I’m saying is that Lord Celice didn’t earn his fame on his own. The times require a hero, and someone is setting him up to be one. Heroes aren’t born, Lord Leaf. They are made.”

Leaf:
“Does that mean I was made by you?”

August:
“Think what you will. …But I will say this. Count Dorias lost his arm to protect you in the past. And now he has lost his life to save yours. Why did this happen? Why are you being kept alive to that extent? Why are you being called a hero at all? Think about that, Lord Leaf…”

(If you let all the civilians escape)

August:
“The prince does not wish to see anyone at the moment. I will relay any messages you have for him.”

Man:
“We are fugitives from Alster. Your army saved us from being captured by the Empire. We were thinking that we would give you this Knight’s Proof as a symbol of our gratitude…”

August:
“Very well. I will give it to the prince.”

Man:
“Thank you.”
