Veronica is in 5th in the CYL Round 2. I will vote for her so she can be at least in the top 4.
And I am ok with Camilla… but Eirika? Nope. We already have a “brave” Eirika.

      • Wow. The male side looks alright (I can deal with Chrom), even though I wish Leif would reach a bit higher. But the female side is the embodiment of shit taste. The power of waifuism is strong.

        • Daniel Smith

          Waifu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok its annoying, fire emblem doesn’t need waifu’s to be a good game… It needs characters that people fall in love with PERSONALITY WISE! Not by… features… So why do people vote for the waifu’s? Is that what the mighty fire emblem fanbase has become? Is the destiny of fire emblem eye candy? Take a Stand! Vote for characters personalities (and not waifu personalities, actual personalities) not appearance!

          • . (Omega)

If you see characters like Camilla and Tharja as being ONLY waifus cause they have fanservicey parts, then you really aren’t a Fire Emblem fan. A real fan of Fire Emblem can look past the hate and see the good parts of characters, even those that are fanservice.

          • Daniel Smith

I agree, I personally think Camilla is an interesting character, for non waifu reasons…

Same with Tharja, what I don’t like is the people that ONLY see the waifu and follow it blindly

          • . (Omega)

Yup. Camilla and Tharja have their issues, sure, but they are more than just a pair of sweater dumplings.

          • Sisyphe

Hmm it’s odd to me that you could think so highly of yourself to claim to know what makes someone a “real” Fire Emblem fan. That really does require quite a degree of prescience and insight. But I forget, we can say such things on the Internet. Surely it would have occurred to you that someone could acknowledge the entirety of the characters and still find them wanting, or must it be that anyone who doesn’t place them among the top 10 in the entire series must be self-evidently incorrect, and thus not a “real” fan, as if there weren’t 12 games of precedent at before those characters came about? Because that’s what this is about: people voting these characters among the top 10. For your comment to be fair, there must not be any other reasonable criterion by which one could compile a top-10 list that would exclude those characters.

But, for my own curiosity, please make the case that they belong. You won’t find a more sympathetic audience. I don’t even dislike them. I even like Faye.

          • . (Omega)

Very colorful speech you made, and very unnecessarily long.
However, please inform me what is wrong with what I said? Am I wrong to say that you are not a true fan of Fire Emblem if you use derogatory names for characters in Fire Emblem? Or perhaps even calling the newer games Waifu Emblem?
Please, by all means, tell me how people who purely use those terms in such an insulting way have any right to call themselves Fire Emblem fans?

Fire Emblem is Fire Emblem, no matter what age it comes in. To demean it and saying that the spirit has changed completely and it isn’t Fire Emblem anymore is an insult.

          • Sisyphe

I don’t buy your premise that a “true” fan must like everything in the series. This isn’t something that can be proven, but I don’t think it’s an intuition we would entertain for other fandoms. Being a fan of a musical artist does not necessitate liking every song or every album. So it is here.

          • . (Omega)

Criticism and having issues is one thing, but using derogatory names and not even attempting to see anything that’s possibly redeemable in a character, judging them solely on looks, is another thing altogether.

          • Sisyphe

That’s not really the case here though. No one has judged a character exclusively by their looks. In fact, I think the people who do are elevating characters based on their looks, hence why Faye isn’t popular and Camilla is. And again, just because someone comes to the conclusion that they don’t like someone doesn’t mean they didn’t consider them holistically before coming to that decision. For example, Tharja has no backstory (unlike Henry, who arguably fills her niche better), has the odd, unexplained Robin fixation, and has this weird thing about hexes that isn’t explained and doesn’t fit the lore of the series. Alternatively, she’s pretty entertaining at times, has a sweet support with Nowi, and is hilarious to use because of Nosferatu. So I think of her as a mixed bag, albeit a poorly written one. None of that explains why she’s so overwhelmingly popular, has her sex appeal played up more than it was in her own game, and deserves multiple character versions. At least not to me. Your mileage may vary, but let’s not assume I haven’t considered it because I came to a different conclusion

          • It’s not even just the fanservice characters. It’s effectively all the characters being nothing more than caricatures in Awakening. But it’s not even the fault of the characters, the story as a whole is a complete parody and is written like a fanfic.

If what constitutes being a ‘real’ FE fan involves being accepting of shitty writing, then I guess I’m just an elitist.

    • mrkisukes

I know a lot of people take issue with Camilla’s placement for the usual ‘thot’ bs as well as her already having 3 versions…but 2 of those are seasonal versions, so the only Camilla you’ll be pulling is vanilla. This is especially annoying from the people saying Erika should be placed above when she now has 2 version that can be pulled.

Personally I want Camilla to take first since I actually despise Celica, she ruined the story of Echoes for me with her being an even bigger dumbass than Erika and getting herself and everyone else in trouble with nothing of consequence happening as a result. She’s straight up the most deceptively selfish characters in all of FE, yet everyone acts like she’s some saint.

      • Diovani Estivalet

I agree with you. I do not have any problem with Camilla. I still like Celica, but for me the part we play as her in Echoes are my least favorite parts of the game, in comparation of Alm’s part which I love. Eirika shouldn’t be there. I really hope Veronica reach the top 4, but I do not want Azura to be despised. Eirika is only that higher in the pool just because we had her banner’s trailer some days before the CYL2 started. If CYL2 had started today, or yesterday, she wouldn’t have so much votes.
And for the men’s side, Marth should been higher in the pool. He is not in 2nd or maybe in 1st just because people are voting in 2 Marths at the same time: Shadow Dragon’s Marth (3rd) and New Mystery of the Emblem’s Marth (9th).
I voted for Shadow Dragon’s Marth today to give him a help, and tomorrow and after I will vote for Azura and Veronica.

        • mrkisukes

I think IntSys will combine the 2 versions of Marth as one, it’s not like Ike who looks drastically different. I do hope he wins a spot, he’s the face of the franchise and deserves that recognition.

But I think it’s super funny how popular the FEH villainess are, so many people want Veronica, Loki and Laevatain (me in particular). So even if they don’t win, I think it’s gonna send a clear message that people want them, that they’re super popular, and maybe we’ll get a first ever Villain’s Banner.

          • Diovani Estivalet

My hopes are for Veronica reaches at least Top 4. Before the CYL 2 Banner, we will probably see a CYL 2 Voting Gauntlet with all 8 characters, and I want to know at they will do in this situation? Maybe Veronica become a Legendary Hero in the future, and being in the Top 4 will make it happen early.

And… Rally Marth! My final votes are for you Hero-King!

      • Sisyphe

Celica suffers from an unfortunately poorly written part of the game, because otherwise she could very easily have been one of the best characters in Fire Emblem. There’s *supposed* to be an underlying crisis of faith narrative that informs both Celica and Jedah’s actions in part 4. That is, both supposedly struggled with Rudolf and Alm respectively trying to seize control of their own fate and leave the gods behind. We never actually know that Jedah is lying, so allegedly the idea is that Jedah and Celica do believe that sacrificing her would pacify Duma and leave them with at least one remaining god, rather than forcing the world to go on without them. So Celica is somewhat acting against Alm in Part 4. That’s the theory at least.

For me, there’s enough in the text where you could convince me that could have been the way they wanted to go, but not enough to think that’s a legitimate interpretation of that part of the game. However, I’ve seen enough arguments in defense of Celica to wonder if a lot of the people who support her have just headcanoned the above analysis as fact. I wish it were true — it would add some desperately need depth to a game that never seemed to make the gravity of its conflict particularly apparent, but I see it as just a missed opportunity.

I don’t hate Camilla (though I find some people’s blind worship of her for fanservice reasons a little uncomfortable), but as a series veteran, I’m very tired of all the 3DS characters. Azura is one of my favorite characters in the whole series, and I don’t need any more of her floating around

        • Diovani Estivalet

I agree with you about the 3DS characters. From all seasonal units we had, only 2 of them are not a Awakening or Fates character (Caeda and Lyn). I am tired of Seasonal Awakening/Fates characters. Echoes is still recent, so I do not have problem with Echoes characters (I want Silque in the game so much).

        • mrkisukes

I definitely see where people come from with those Echoes analysis, the issue though is that it feels too last minute. Obvious things need to start with us believing the gods are necessary only for us to transition to seeing them as not, but from all the lore of the 2 countries attributing Zofia’s bounty and Regel’s harsh lands being attributed to their respective deities, and then seeing the loss of the flourishing Zofian lands after Mila disappears…yeah, it really seems like man needs their gods. So the idea that they no longer need the gods to push forward into the future is in direct contradiction to literally everything we were presented.

With the Awakening/Fates units, I get the frustration people have…hell, it frustrates me. I’m frustrated because of all the hate that it’s been generating towards these legitimately fun and interesting characters. I want another alt. version of Camilla, but seeing her show up so often for these temporary seasonal banners makes others not want her who would otherwise.

        • Noktis Zariah

Echoes has missed opportunities everywhere tbh, it’s the reason why I’m thoroughly mixed on the game.

-Celica jumping to conclusions in her one sided argument with Alm
          -Her behavior late game
          -Rudolf’s lack of screentime
-Rinea basically being a plot device
          -Faye
          -Unfixed map design
-Battle skills not being as useful as they appear
-Supports that seem to go nowhere character wise
-Lack of supports for certain characters like Kliff and Genny
          -Slog desert/swamp maps

Let’s just say if I were in charge of the game I’d do a LOT of things differently. As for the topic of character representation I’m personally tired of the 3DS characters too.

          • Sisyphe

Yeah I don’t disagree with any of the points you mentioned. On the one hand, I thought it had perhaps the best presentation in the series (art direction, music, and writing style), but on the other, all the things you mentioned have made it really difficult for me to finish even one subsequent playthrough, which is usually automatic for Fire Emblem titles

          • Noktis Zariah

Oh yeah, presentation wise it’s the best game FE game on the 3DS but the reasons listed above are why I haven’t come back to the game for a Hard Mode run. It’s a decent expansion but what seem like obvious opportunities to improve on the source material and add more meat to the story are completely ignored in favor of doing nothing or something equally lazy with the excuse of “staying true to the original”.

For example Alm and Celica could have questioned each others motivations thanks to the conclusions they’ve come to based on their experiences, with Alm having seen the negative effects of Mila’s blessings and realizing the Mila spoiling Zofians are what lead to the corruption while Celica could argue Mila’s blessings are still neccessary by seeing what her absence has lead to, famine and an increase in pirate activity which caused people like Valbar to lose his whole family (a character detail that he seems to bring up rather casually).

This isn’t even getting into the worldbuilding being a tad inconsistent, the lifestyles and values of the two sides of the continent not being elaborated on enough to flesh out the world, Alm’s “good but not nice” nature (which would have mirrored Duma) being altered to a more generic personality which makes the argument with Celica even more one sided, the foreshadowing of his true family being much too heavy, the obvious Conrad reveal, Berkut’s lack of motivation beyond beating Alm, Grieth being a disappointing cartoony villain, Jedah being portrayed as far too evil when he had an understandable motivation, Rudolf’s motivation being shaky depending on who you ask, Deen’s flat personality, Halcyon not playing a bigger role, the Nuibaba route dependent plothole, etc. THE LIST GOES ON.

For every thing the game does right it does two things wrong and I feel like people either ignore this or just choose not to acknowledge it because of Awakening’s quantity over quality attempt at story telling and one dimensional villains and Fates’ triple decker trainwreck plot thanks to the need of incorporating connections to Awakening and a golden ending route the raises more questions than it answers and influences the other two paths in ways that squander their potential and morph them into shadows of what they could have been. The fact is that what happened with the games before Echoes was IntSys writers were too ambitious and their attempts at making things more convoluted and involved than they should have been lead to the stories being showy in style but severely lacking in substance.

Echoes doesn’t have this excuse, they had the frame to expand upon but instead applying that ambition and creativity that they did for the other two games it feels like they just did what they needed to and forgot to make some of it work more by modern standards, I feel like IntSys just wanted to throw old FE fans a bone and then rush off to work on the next “””Waifu Emblem””” (as the fandom has dubbed them) because when you take a moment to consider what COULD have been in Echoes and think about just how fast solutions to these issues can be thought up it feels like much less effort was put forth for the game and that’s a little sad. It’s not like I even hate or dislike Echoes’ story and gameplay I just find them meh/decent and settling for that is uncomfortable to say the least.

Makes me worried for FE Switch, makes me real worried.

          • Noktis Zariah

And keep in mind when I’m referring to old FE fans I’m not talking about myself, I started with Awakening like most people nowadays. I’ve just taken the time to look at other games too, I’m playing Path of Radiance right now and it’s far better written and fleshed out than Awakening and Fates are.

      • Daniel Smith

You are not alone on this opinion my friend

      • speedster

I honestly don’t care who wins CYL that much. All I care about is that characters from pre-3DS games and Echoes doing well in CYL2. At least look on the bright side. If Celica wins she’ll get banned in future CYL events. Though some of your points can be said about Ephraim and quite possibly Ike to some extent.

        • mrkisukes

True dat, but with FE switch on it’s way in 2018, the likelihood that those characters will take over the popular votes for CLY3 are high so this CYL could be the last chance we see for many of these characters to get in…it’s all dependent on how well received the characters in the new FE game are; if any will replace Celica or Camilla in their respective pandering.

      • Spookeh

that is indeed interesting. i took Act 4 a bit differently. personally its refreshing not seeing heroes/heroines behave stoically and follow the hero trope every now and then (like Alm, i still like him tho). it was mentioned once (by Kliff as a kid i think) that Celica acted selfish by keeping her secrets to herself. and this truly showed in Act 4, where she refused to tell her party what she learned from Jedah, knowing everyone will tell her no. We [and Celica] saw Jedah’s true intentions, but that doesn’t count since that was in the future in Act 5.

Celica’s decision to sacrifice herself to: calm down Duma for a few centuries (?) (don’t know if this is actually true, her soul ain’t enough), release Mila from her imprisonment while temporally restoring Zofia’s bounty (which was a lie, she was already slain & sealed a year before the game started), and end the war peacefully that Alm is currently battling (is another lie, Jedah wants to sacrifice him too. that is why Rudolf hid Alm away); is one of the toughest decisions a young princess of Zofia will have to make, and she did it alone w/o her party’s opinion.

Jedah is a snake oil salesman, no way he is keeping his promises. but Celica was so desperate that she didn’t care no longer despite her party’s warning. consequently, the situation got even worse after accepting Jedah’s deal instead of refusing [and will be forced to fight Jedah again].

Jedah’s claim being true or not, i would not fault Celica’s choice if it involves saving her goddess and the people of Zofia as Rulers have to make tough choices. i would fault her for, is not believing in her party and not telling them what she learned from Jedah. if Celica had clairvoyance powers, maybe things would have been different & she wouldn’t have accepted the deal, making Act 5 a less of a mess lmao.

i have no doubt Camilla will still be top 2 by the end of tomorrow. also Reinhardt memed his way to #5 (from 584th) is amazing XD!

  • Sisyphe

Ah they brought back the Valter-level waves of reinforcements for Infernal, I see. Lovely.

  • The general reinforcements caught me off guard at first, but it was quite easy apart from that. Arvis could handle them without much trouble, and my BB Kleine could quadshot pretty much everything else.

  • Daniel Smith

We need Brave Mrobin! We need to have grima introduced into the game!

Honestly, why with the female side! Camilla is ok, nino, Fcorrin, and Tharja I’m fine with… But veronica? Loki? Celica? EIRIKA??? we don’t need Eirika and the other characters haven’t even been released as playable… so why would we get brave forms…

also 3 beasts in top 40

    • mrkisukes

Grima would be dope. I thinks it’s actually funny that the FEH villainess are getting so much love. Even if I agree they not get a brave version, I think this is important as a message to IntSys that they are popular and people will pull for them if they made a banner (I’d go for Laevatain).

      • . (Omega)

I don’t think Grima is possible. Grima is pure evil. Lyon isn’t fully evil, and here is the part where he isn’t fully possessed by the Demon King.

        • Daniel Smith

I don’t think pure evil has anything to do with how the heroes are chosen… I think its just popularity

But, if that was how they do it… all they would have to do is make it where Robin is still “inside” like in Awakening dlc

          • . (Omega)

I doubt it. See, look at the villains we have gotten. Valter, Zephiel, and Zelgius aren’t pure evil. Two have been driven to madness, one by his weapon, and the other by his terrible parents. And the other is a man that is just loyal to his master and seeks to become very powerful as his mentor.

Grima is not the same as he is pure evil. Robin cannot break out of Grima’s hold unless Grima is weakened.

          • Daniel Smith

But wouldn’t that be an interesting twist to the game?

And there is the forshadowing of Sutr

          • . (Omega)

For Surtr? I thought there was the case that we would have Laevatein? She seems like she would be a Legendary Hero, rather than her father Surtr.

          • Daniel Smith

She will probably come first… but eventually the heroes antagonists will become playable…

          • . (Omega)

I have a lot of doubt in regards to Surtr honestly. Everything about him shows that he deserves to die an icy death.

          • Daniel Smith

he does… but because this game likes getting money, he will likely be a major GHB or special summon or something

          • . (Omega)

Before we get him, I’d rather we get Veronica and Bruno/Zacharias.

  • . (Omega)

Everyone! Vote for Shadow Dragon Marth! He deserves the spotlight! He has been denied too much. Let the original Fire Emblem Lord, the face of Fire Emblem, and a great character still, get the recognition he deserves!

    • Diovani Estivalet

      #RallyMarth

  • dmurr

I think it’s funny that there’s only maybe one comment right now focused on what this actual post is about and everyone else is commenting on Choose Your Legends, lol. That’s not even mentioned

    • mrkisukes

Screw Lyon, it’s all about that waifus!! 😛
