Smash Ultimate: New Fire Emblem Assist Trophies + Spirits

Today, Nintendo broadcasted the final Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct ahead of its 7th December release. No new playable characters were added from Fire Emblem, but a bunch of characters managed to get in, in some shape or form.

For starters, the Black Knight (from Path of Radiance) and adult Tiki (from Awakening) have been upgraded from regular trophies to Assist Trophies. Now you can better recreate moments like Ike’s fateful duel or Tiki assisting Marth and his descendants.

Next, Ultimate has added new “Spirit” characters, which are somewhat similar to stickers from Brawl. They can be equipped to fighters to enhance them and give them additional abilities. Spirits come in two types: Primary (the main one, of course) and Support (can be equipped by Primary).

At the very end, I’ve included a list of all the Spirits that I spotted in the Direct and also on the Smash Ultimate official site. There was a lot to look through, so apologies if I missed any!

With this Direct over, we now know all the playable characters in the game… sort of. Sakurai–the game’s developer–announced that the game will feature 5 DLC characters, just like Smash for 3DS and Wii U. So there’s still a chance, although possibly small, for your favourite character to make it in!

I need to say… the “Spirits” is a lazy concept… Now I understand why we are getting Smash this year… it’s because Nintendo didn’t have the work of doing new 3D models for new trophies.

It’s lazier but it allows for many more characters to appear. It also gives them a purpose, since before I would basically never look at my trophies and just move on, maybe grab a picture of all of them to brag to my friends about how much time I’d spent. Spirits at least allow for use in battle, and I’ll consider a variety of them so I’ll get a decent look at most of them.

Nintendo could use Trophies instead. Allow trophies for use in battle.
They used the existed artwork so they don’t have the work to create 3D models. I will be ok if at least the spirits have similat desctriptions to the trophies.

That’s a lot more development, boo

That’s why I said the “Spirits” is a lazy concept and why we are getting Smash this year.

Lazy though it may be, if you think about it the Spirits are similar to the stickers in Brawl and equips in Wii U/3DS with the usual buff to one stat but debuff to its opposite to balance it out (though that only really applies to the equips from Wii U/3DS). Personally from all that they’ve revealed I’m definitely looking forward to it now, wasn’t interested at first cause I didn’t think it would be this ambitious with ALL of the returning fighters and some new ones along with the eventual DLC (I mean come on who didn’t see that coming?) which I’m pretty sure one of them is gonna have one of the Three Houses characters, a stage from the game as well as the music for promotion of Three Houses like they did with Corrin for Fates.

And that Story/Adventure mode looks like its gonna be fun if not frustrating for some of the later fights.

Well… not get me wrong, I am looking forward for World of Light too, and the spirit battles look fun. It’s just the reuse old artwork that bothered me.
Also, what is the reward for completing Classic Mode? A spirit of the fighter?

          • Mason Klaus

Understandable. Newer artwork is better but I guess some would appreciate the original artworks.

I imagine getting challenged by some of the characters would be at least one of the rewards since its been like that since the N64 days, not really sure outside that. Probably some new music for the various stages and maybe some of the stages themselves if you use certain characters. Won’t really know for sure till the game comes out next month.
