One thing I know is that +Def or +Hp -Lck Avatar is good for Lunatic and Lunatic Plus in the early maps, unless you're aiming for post-game efficiency. Panne is useful, imo. She doesn't require too much investment as she starts off with good bases, and has nice growths. However, you won't find any other beaststone until several chapters later, which is a shame. You don't want to spam her stone then, or even better, reclass her to Wyvern. She makes a great Wyvern Rider that can be on par with Nowi. I find Miriel quite okay, but by feeding kills to the Avatar I doubt there's enough tomes for you. So if you don't power-leveling Avatar Miriel might be considered, because ranged dps is extremely good especially in positional gameplays and formations. Lon'qu is also a really strong unit when he joins with C rank sword and Killing Edge, but falls off hard later on due to low durability (and Str too if RNG doesn't have mercy). Wow, Sully. I may be biased since she's one of my most favorite character. Having more Speed and Skill than Stahl, she's capable of doubling enemies but if she doesn't get enough Str/Spd/Def (Rng again) she would be... uh, in an awkward position. In that case, Stahl's better. (Sumia and Cordelia is okay too for easy Galeforce early game for inheritance, but they both lacks durability - which is vital in a no grind run) Gregor is a total bros. Kellam is workable. Totally. There are a few tricks in the early Chapters (1 and 2) to feed the Avatar kills, which snowballs effectively for easier later Chapters. Specifically, feed him/her as much as possible using the water trick (Chapter 1 Avatar and Chrom can do the water waddling to snipe enemies from afar) and taking advantage of the healing Fort in Chapter 2 to milk Exp from the boss or an archer (just unequip everyone's weapon then immobilize the target by surrounding him) after finishing all the other distractions. Poke him to your heart's content but beware of weapon's usage. I do believe that we need more than just one powerful unit, but you need to know who do you want to use ahead of time and focus resources on them. Well... this is ultimately optional, but having a FeMU x Chrom pairing nets you three units with Veteran very early - not to mention the boosted stats from the Avatar. Lucina is a very valuable unit and with Veteran (and possibly Galeforce, Vantage/Aegis/Pavise) she's a beast. She even has the access to Sorc which enables Nosferatank as dimbenes1 mentioned if you want. It's been awhile since I played FE:A, so please correct me if I missed anything.

I find +Mag superior since Nyx!Nina Adventurer (or if you have access to Witch) gives your Avatar more Speed than enough by pairing up with her, not to mention that +Mag has positive Spd point as well. However, Nyx!Nina has negative Skill mod that might affect your Kana's performance, but the influence is minor unless you want a crit-based build for her. As for talent, considering you're willing to buy skills, I guess Diviner > Onmyoji works if you're playing on Conquest, but Nyx!Nina has it naturally so Nina gets nothing (not that she needs anything). Kana inherits Outlaw from Nina and Diviner from you, so she can be Onmyoji or Witch. Diviner can be promoted into Basara if you want something hybrid, but then again Nohr Noble already covers that. Dark Mage or Troubadour talent is a good choice for Kana too if Witch isn't available, but your Avatar loses Onmyoji - which you can't grab from any Conquest characters. On Revelation, though, you may want Sorcerer because Kana can grab Onmyoji by A+ Selkie / Mitama. Alternatively, Flame Shuriken Ninja works too, if you like something different. Beware that Ninjas has 0 growth in Magic. Magic boon (and Aptitude, if you don't mind) can fix that though. Sorry if that's a bit long, I just want to make sure since I have no idea which version will you be playing, or if you want to take Kana into consideration.
