the problem with geothermal (and hydro, but to a lesser extent) is that if you need to have it available... afaik only some of the Scandinavian countries have significant geothermal resources

I think overall if you consider hydro energy it's still better to emit a lot of CO2 in the construction of the plant and then produce none in the actual power generation than to emit less C02 in the construction of, say, a coal plant, and then produce a ton in the generation. No power production is perfect. Nuclear plants also have a ton of concrete in them and cost on the order of tens of billions of dollars to build, solar and wind power aren't reliable etc, but I think they're...
