  1. So there was a challenge run concept proposed in this topic the other day requiring you to complete an entire Fire Emblem without recruiting a single character. http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=67837 In most of the Fire Emblem games, this isn't a big deal since your starting party tends to be reasonably strong and viable backups come pouring in as the game progresses, Gaiden is different. Almost none of your roster joins automatically. In fact, aside from a few characters that are mandatory to recruit in order to advance the story, nobody joins automatically at all! All in all, this means we're going to beat the game with a total of 6 characters split between two parties. Pretty crazy, but Gaiden itself is also crazy so maybe it will balance out. Update! The full playlist for a Grey-less version of the run can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4y9vIwFHQJohlg8l3C2pme61h_XG3but Chapter 1: We start out pretty strong here. Luka is required to be recruited to advance the story and Gray is blocking the pathway. (Gray can be skipped through a simple exploit though I forgot about this at the time of the run.) This makes the beginning a somewhat standard affair with one exception: the leather shield mercenary. Since I go the mercenary path with Gray, the team has no magic users, so the mercenary mini-boss has to be whittled down repeatedly with weak physical attacks. Luckily, Alm is a pretty cool guy that can take hits, so he can just park on the healing tile while the boss slowly but surely is done in by Alm's barrage of 2-3 damage attacks. After the thundersword is obtained, the chapter is a piece of cake. Gray doubles and one-rounds just about everything and both Alm and Luka can take a hit or two. Lion head bonuses are +3 speed to Luka to help him double in mid-game and +2 def to Alm and +1 def to Gray to help their durability just a bit. Chapter 2: After a relatively easy chapter 1, chapter 2 is some bad times. For mandatory characters, we get our choice between May and Boey. Boey has decent durability later on, but his offense is hot garbage throughout the game so I think May is the pick here. Lion heads are +2 Power for Cellica and +1 speed to May so pirates will go down soundly in one round of combat. The main issue for chapter 2 is the frailty of the units. Neither Celica nor May can really take physical attacks well, so the leather shield has to be obtained very cautiously. The leather shield helps Celica quite a bit, but I still have to take certain maps slowly to avoid her getting swarmed and more or less keep May in the back row behind her at all times. Fortunately, this isn't too difficult largely because the pirate ship chapters are FULL of choke points. Chapter 3: With Luka and Gray promoted to Knight and Hero (Myrmidon), there isn't really anything standing in the way of steamrolling Alm's side of chapter 3. However, Cellica's team needs a LOT of help. So, on the final map, Gray is killed off (surprisingly difficult to do) so he can be brought back in a revival shrine. He's a Demonfighter with a thunder sword at this point in time, so once we get him it's good times. Getting to him is the hard part. Celica's team being undermanned is an even bigger problem in chapter 3. In fact, it's nearly impossible to save Palla and Catria here without a huge amount of luck/rigging. Basically the eastern part of the chapter in impossible with our current team, so we've got to go to the revival shrine. This wouldn't be a huge problem, except that it also happens to house 3 dragonzombies. Celica can take them out with ease, but once again durability is a problem. Not only can the team only take 1-2 hits total from these jerks, Celica lacks the HP to use Angel to kill them all unless she has 25 HP! This meant an extra trip to the graveyard before I get Gray back from the dead. Luckily, having a demon fighter gray solves a lot of problems! He cut through everything with ease, alternating between the lightning sword and darkness sword. He even killed that jerk Geyse in 2 hits! Lots of killing means lots of experience points, so Gray actually gets to level 10 and gets to promote to villager so he can later repromote to archer. As we move into chapter 4. Chapter 4: The first map is a little annoying since becoming a Villager erases Gray's insane Demon Fighter resistance stat, but with some support from Celica with her healing and 5-range magic ring attacks, he gets through it. It's totally worth it, though. Gray is a pretty good archer. Exhibit A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv26mxrMJ50 Once he has access to the 5 range steel bow, the whole chapter is basically a joke. The only except are the always-annoying Bigls. I actually have to rig some turns so they multiply less. One or two turns of them multiplying by 5 or 6 renders the map unbeatable since Gray can't kill them as fast as they multiply. The same goes for Alm's side, as he gets a promotion and a silver bow at this time, so after a map of slight growing pains, him and Luka become a 2 man wrecking squad. Things are even better when Ruka gets the speed ring and Alm gets the Holy Bow in the fear shrine. The HP recovery and stat boosts from those items make Alm and Luka nearly invincible. They even find a super-rare Dragonshield as Alm lays wastes to easily a hundred dragon zombies. Not too useful hear, but with a 1/2000 drop rate, a cool souvenir for sure! As usual, the biggest pain here is Rudolph. He hits hard and has huge defenses, so I just have Alm go in alone with a Speed Ring for the massive defensive advantage (prevents Alm from being doubled as well as granting him massive avoid thanks to automatic 40 speed). Alm only does 4x2 damage per round, but with the critical hits mixed in, is enough to slowly take Rudolph down to finish Alm's side of the chapter. Afterwards, we get Maisen, our last mandatory character. Wheeeee! Chapter 5: Maisen gets the Dragonshield, meaning that Alm's squad now effectively has 3 invincible units. Maisen doesn't hit hard or fast, but his movement is good which makes him a formidable meatwall or magekiller during certain moments. Alm mainly cleans house by himself, though. The only noteworthy battle of chapter 5 is of course the finale itself. Gray is a bowknight now and proves to be a valuable asset in escorting Celica upwards. He one-rounds just about everything with 1-5 range, including those obnoxious Bigls! He takes a bit of damage when trying to clear some of the witches near Doma, but his monstrous HP stat lets him tank a lot of them despite his Res stat of 2 and no clerics or healing tiles to bail him out. Celica herself is also surprisingly strong. She has great speed, reasonable defenses thanks to loads of lion's head bonuses, and a good magic arsenal made better with the overpowered magic ring for 5 range attacking. She holds her own better than she has in any other run I've done with her, so getting her to Alm and Doma for some game winning healing+100% crit support with Alm isn't too much of a problem. Anyway, it was kind of crazy run, but aside for a few maps that were dumb, this was definitely more of just a novelty run than a challenge run. Like in most Fire Emblem games, it pays off in Gaiden to have a small number of really overpowered units. Maybe next time I will try it without Gray... For those wanting pics, I didn't take a whole lot of this one, but I went back and took a few of my final battle squad. Enjoy! [spoiler=pics or it didn't happen] Alm (Falchion equipped) and Luka (Quick Ring Equipped) Maisen (Dragon Shield Equipped) and Celica (Magic Ring Equipped) May (Magic Ring Equipped) and Gray (Silver Bow Equipped) Also for those seeing May's stats and wondering if she was useless for the finale, she actually contributed a little bit! The Magic Ring with its 5 range solves a lot of problems, so despite her horrible stats and 4 move, she got in some decent damage with Aura (~20 per hit) and the Bigls for other characters to finish off. Not too shabby, but nowhere near as insane as Gray on the right heheh.
  2. Heya! I was wondering if there was any documentation out there for FE1/FE2 hacking. I haven't seen any resources whatsoever available for either of those games, and I'm sorta interested in tinkering with them. Anything would be helpful!
  3. Yup, I wanna patch FE2. Here's a list of some changes I plan to make. -All Character names and some location names given by Awakening -Made some Characters' names ACTUAL names -Basically modernizing names in general -With knowledge of the entire story, I can attempt to write a script for the story. Dialogue, anyway. Alright, so, those name changes... Alm's Party -------------- Alm (Official) Robin Gray ---> Grayson Cliff/Qulyf (<---What even is this name?) ---> Cliff Luka/Ruka ---> Luka Silk ---> Silke Clair/Clea ---> Claire (Official) Cleive ---> Clive (Official) Python/Paison ---> Paul (Goes by the codename Python) Force/Fols ---> Felix Ryuto ---> Luthier (Official) Matilda/Machilda ---> Matilda Dyute/Dute ---> Dyute Teeta Zeke/Zeak (<---Bruh.) ---> Zeke Mycen/Maisen ---> Mycen (Official) Celica's Party ----------------- Celica (Official) May/Mae ---> May Boey (Official) Jenny Saber/Sevr/Savor ---> Sergio Valbo ---> Valbar (Official) Kamui ---> Chadwin Leo ---> Leon Palla (Official) Catria (Official) Atlas Jesse/Jesey/Jessie ---> Jesse Sonia/Sonya ---> Sonia Dean ---> Deen (Official) Est (Official) Noma ---> Nomah (Official) ------------------------------------ Okay, so, now you're probably sitting there, thinking, "What are these names?" I did my research with my name changes, sans the official ones. Those wondering where I got Chadwin from... Kamui is a Japanese name meaning "Divine". Chadwin is a Welsh name meaning "Divine". There. I chose Leon because in terms of how the name sounds... Leon > Leo. Sergio? Sergio's an Italian name meaning "Attendant". A subtle nod, in my opinion, since Sergio visits the bar very frequently. Well... Where should I begin with patching? What do you guys think of the names?
  4. Since Sevr, Kamui, Jesey, and Deen all start in the Mercenary line, they're all able to eventually loop back around to Villager to turn into either Soldiers, Cavaliers, Archers, or Mages (or I suppose back into Mercenaries) if the player wants. I understand the sheer amount of grinding on its own probably renders that not worth it, but I was kinda curious how they perform in other class lines, or at least if there are any of them that are particularly noteworthy in other classes.
  5. I personally think Gaiden had tons of neat ideas that could be expanded on in the franchise today, sure we see stuff like Dreadfighter, Witch and such in Fates, and of course the country of Valm in Awakening, but how would you like to see a proper revisit? Like Gaiden's mechanics, such as shrines, dungeons, towns, its way of branched promotion for villagers etc, being used in either a remake or FE15. I personally think they could do some neat things with the system, however I doubt IS would do it, considering how much they hate taking risks currently. So discuss! I'd be glad to hear your ideas.

    NES graphics

Does anyone know how to edit around the graphics (specifically the mugshots) of the NES FE games? I want to make better looking mugshots for the characters and maybe even the class related sprites. I've already updated the mugshots for Cellica, Alm and Clea. The lip flaps aren't shown, but they are complete. Alm arum_8 bit.bmp Cellica cellica_8 bit.bmp Clair clea_8 bit.bmp
  7. I was playing through Gaiden when I suddenly got the urge to make a 16 bit updated version of Cellica's mugshot, and later Alm. It wasn't anything fancy, just took the original mugshot and applied the changes using FE5 colors. I then converted it down to the 8 bit graphics, and it looks, in my opinion, a lot cleaner than the original. I just really only have one question...how do I put it into the game? Here's the 8 bit mugshots, competed with 2 different lip flaps (I don't quite remember if the game had lip flaps or not...oh well). FE2mugs_new collection.bmp Here are the 16 bit mugshots I made of Alm and Cellica. arum_16 bit.bmp cellica_16 bit.bmp
  8. Hello, I have gotten to the end of Chapter 1 in the game and at Sofia Castle there is a chest with Knight in it. When I walk up to it, it says "This chest held knight. Area Reclaimed! Knight reverted." It doesn't show up in my items at all. What do I do???
  9. Hello all. Recently I started wondering about how some major components in the plot of FE2 are based on pretty shaky evidence. So I started wondering what an alternative history of Valentia could be like. I decided to try my hand at writing and share my alternative history with SF. Since a lot of people aren't familiar with Gaiden's story, I'll start by retelling the story first. We're talking about an NES game here (with all its plot limitations), so along the way I'll be using some creative liberty to add extra detail to the story. Once I'm done with this history, I'll write my alternative history: Fire Emblem: Gaiden - What Really Happened. Please post any feedback in the appropriate feedback thread. Enjoy. Prologue: The History of Valentia On this remote island continent known as Valentia were two sibling gods: the dark god Duma and his younger sister, the earth goddess Mila. Initially They set out to guide Valentia's destiny together. They taught mankind much, and through Their divine guidance mankind became a mighty race. But as mankind grew stronger, its ambitions waned. Once, long ago, it needed to toil with all its strength just to survive in the cruel world, but now they were safe and they had everything to their hearts' desire... why should they continue to strive for more if they were already content with what they had? Duma was bitter. This was not the destiny He had set for mankind. Believing that power is everything, He could not forgive mankind for its growing decadence. He started urging humans to work harder and strive for power once more. Only through hard toil and absolute control over the world, so Duma believed, could they build themselves a paradise. Mila, on the other hand, was overjoyed. Through luxury, mankind was starting to enjoy the fruits of ages of hard work. She believed that in peace and luxury mankind could find harmony with the world, and thus create a paradise where all living beings could frolic in freedom. Naturally She was angry when Duma started his attempts at breaking this harmony with His cries for ambition and power. She rebuked Duma, but Duma would not change His mind; instead, He rebuked Mila, but She would not listen to Him. Duma became furious, and the difference of opinion between the gods escalated into a violent dispute. Valentia was plunged into darkness. Mankind was deserted by their gods. They were no longer among them; instead, Their violent dispute caused humans great horror and sorrow. Mila's absence caused the earth to grow fallow and sickly; mankind could no longer rely on it for food, which caused a great setback in population. Duma's wrath caused great horror. Disasters were a far too common occurrence. But that was not all. Both gods created minions of Their own devising to serve Them and lead the fight against the other god - this is how monsters came to be. The monsters not only fought each other, but they also caused terror among humans, whom they attacked without warning. In fear, humans fled before them, deserting their cities, and went to live in small nomadic communities in the forests, living off hunting, struggling to survive, as they had done in their earliest days, before the gods came among them to guide them... And so, the once great Valentian civilization collapsed. A long, long period of darkness passed... At last, the two gods sealed a pact: the Pact of the Gods. The continent of Valentia was divided in two: the north ruled by Duma, the south ruled by Mila. Mankind cowered in fear as the gods who had deserted them and had fought a violent war over Valentia suddenly came back amongst them. But the gods mended their fears. They need no longer fear the monsters, for the gods had destroyed them. With promises of paradise, Mila greeted the southern Valentians with kindness. Under Her guidance, these Valentians built a new civilization, which was based on peace. Thus the Kingdom of Zofia was founded. Through peace and charity, Zofia grew into a prosperous nation. With promises of paradise, Duma greeted the northern Valentians with an iron fist. Under His guidance, these Valentians built a new civilization, which was based on power. Thus the Kingdom of Rigel was founded. Through hard work and strict discipline, Rigel grew into a prosperous nation. Mankind rejoiced in their newfound prosperity, but the gods were frustrated. Each had hoped that their own ideals would have proven the better, and so would have given rise to a stronger kingdom, which could subdue the other and so subdue the other god's ideals. But both domains turned into prosperous nations. The gods allowed a peaceful coexistence of Zofia and Rigel, feigning to be happy with the results of the Pact of the Gods. Believing that the gods wished for peaceful coexistence, Zofia and Rigel decided to extend the Pact of the Gods to include an alliance between them. And so thousands of years passed... The golden age of prosperity was now a memory of the distant past. Zofia had become decadent in its prosperity, and Rigel had forgotten kindness in its might. All the while, the gods grew more hostile towards each other. Thus did these times filled with contradiction flow on. Although the Pact of the Gods guaranteed alliance between the two kingdoms, with the ever-growing differences between them and the ever-growing hostility between the gods, one could only wonder how long the pact could remain intact...
  10. FE2 really does not get mentioned much in this board, which is very curious. So I'm wondering; what do people who've played it think? Personally, I love a lot of what it tries, because despite being ancient it was still extremely fresh to play through because of how unique it was and has still managed to be. It's fairly dated but its music and graphics honestly aren't terrible by any means imo (they grew on me), and the gameplay was still quite enjoyable. The two paths with Alm and Celica is one of my favourite dynamics of the game, and I wish they replicated this in Sacred Stones. Probably not my favourite FE, and definitely not my least favourite, but I still adore it.
  11. I can't be the only one who is reminded of Rigel and Zofia...
  12. So i've played a bit of fire emblem and i've been meaning to get into this one(I only have radiant dawn, thracia 776 and this left to play) I hear people saying that its like the zelda 2 of the franchise is this true? Anyway, main questions are, are there huge differences in the core game mechanics? And what should I expect from the lord(s?) in this one? Also, any info as to what to expect in this game would be much appreciated. (I sure hope i'm posting in the right place.)
  13. As was discussed in the Alm vs Claire thread. Okay, so this is a project I'll be working on over some time to complete FE2 as quickly as I can without too much hassle. There is still a good amount that is unknown in this game so not every detail is really worked out, so I will probably be doing some level of improvising as I go through- this might end up being a trial run, and then I can go back and fix thing afterwards. In a way, Gaiden is probably an easier game to speedrun than most others even with a large information gap- there are far less resources I need to worry about, like lack of money and item durability, and there are no promotion items to speak of. That out of the way, there are a few objectives in this playthrough I will be accomplishing along the way, some for practical reasons, others because I will play this run however I please. Since those are important to know, here they are! 1) Everyone will be recruited, even if they aren't very useful or recruiting them is a pain (Atlas, Dyute). I don't like skipping recruitments, even when extra units will almost certainly be a detriment in certain scenarios, so I will not be doing so. 2) Everyone will be alive at the end of the game. This one is interesting, because there are a few spots where it's possible to revive a unit, and deaths could be used in interesting ways to save turns, but at the same time I'm not sure how much I want to play with this since managing timing for this will be pretty difficult. But if I think of some ways to use revival spots for the betterment of the run I'm not opposed to using them. 3) Every map will be visited at least once, even if it is optional. Same as #1, I don't believe in skipping maps when there aren't any that are super hard to visit or anything. Some maps I will need to visit a few times throughout the game for various reasons. I'm not sure how to handle skirmishes because they're beyond my control right now, but they will be a problem I'll need to address when Chapter 3 comes around- if anyone knows of a good way to manage these I'd really love to know. 4) I want to keep RNG manipulation to a minimum. For one, I only know one way to advance the RNG mid-map (which is visiting the unit list), and it is boring, so it is in part a limitation in practicality. Secondly I don't think strategies that are over-reliant on low chances are the part of this run that is supposed to be interesting. If a low-chance critical hit or level-up or something similar is really needed to help beat a map with a significantly lower turn-count then I will do so, but if it's just saving one turn, I don't think it's worth it. I'll be referring to maps based on the number assigned on Fire Emblem War of Dragons because it's an easy way to maintain a certain level of consistency and I really don't know a better way of sorting them out! I think that's about it. I haven't yet started because I need to get everything adjusted on my new computer but I have started planning out stat benchmarks I want to meet on certain units. I have a good idea for where I want to be on most of Chapter 1, then things start getting trickier. I'll be doing videos for every chapter and maybe some form of commentary, I dunno if people like these quiet or with thoughts on what I'm doing. Anyone who has thoughts on commentary, knows anything involving RNG advancing, anything else that I might find helpful in this playthrough, or really has anything to say about this at all would be appreciated. I'll post again whenever I make some progress. That'll be all for now.
  14. I have watched a LP of FE2 Gaiden and I still do not know, why characters like Catria, Palla, Est, Zeke (Camus) and Gharnef from FE1+3 are in this game? Is there a relation in the story between FE1 and 2, I have not seen yet?
  15. I'm not sure how well known Gaiden was but is there an explanation as to why Alm has a Falchion as well? And what happened to it in Awakening? Or was it renamed as "Alm's Blade" to avoid confusion to international players?
  16. Well I just finished FE2 and I have to say it was great and hard! yes the final battle really made the game I loved how Celica and Alm`s armies joined as one! Doma was not that hard I had Alm do his support critical attack with Celica. Gray died on this run though I had him as a Bow Knight lost him from other bow knights and I could not find the secret shrine to revive him :( his growths and stats were bad anyway Paison was great with the Holy Bow. Umm wow this is so random Lol I don`t know why I felt the need to announce that I beat this game but I guess while I`m at it I`ll make a list of best units I had during this run. Alm`s Party Alm (late in game at first I thought he was bad due to bad speed) Cliff (bad at first though but was great with a thunder sword and being a dread fighter late in) Ruka (great Baron I gave him the magic shield to make him even better) Dyute (I never did promote her though but somehow she lived through last chapter) Silk (she was perfect once she promoted she was awesome speed ring worked well on her) Zeke/Camus (he is always great no matter what game) Matilda (best speed and great stats all around she was second best gold knight next to Zeke) Ryute (gave him a magic ring and had him use Excalibur from far) Paison (Holy Bow worked well on him) Clea ( at first she was horrible but an alright Falcon Knight gave Holy Lance) Celica`s party Celica (she had some problems with speed early on but got good after gave Holy Sword for main weapon) Saver(Great with the Hero Sword) May (high magic nothing else she started out my best but then I got sonia) Jenny (her Illusion spell helped distract enemies early on gave Holy Ring) Palla (great even when she first came) Catria (great when she first came angel ring made her perfect mage killer) Est (always great for me gave silver lance triangle attack is the best thing to happen in this game) Sonia (her high stats+steel shield made her a dream come true since she got high def and can use mag) Atlas (eh turned ok as a gold knight) Kamui (did not use for final but was great with the darkness sword then later silver sword) and that was it those were the main units I used during this playthrough so next game I will try is FE1 I wonder what the first one is like?
  17. I`m still playing Gaiden but I`ve been having many problems with its RNG I mean its so ridiculous how many times I miss my hits compared to the enemy and my characters have quite high hit why so many misses? I`m stuck on Alm`s route now as the random paladin fights are costing me not even save states are helping :( almost everyone gets double attacked by the cavaliers and no one can do decent damage except Ruka but the layout of the map and the fact I`m ambushed does not help me to get any close to victory darn game if only if I would not miss so much hits. I`ll post a picture of the map I`m stuck on.
  18. Hey guys well I just started playing Fire Emblem Gaiden today and well this is my first time playing a NES Fire Emblem so what am I to expect? and what is different from the SNES and GBA Fire Emblem games? how hard is this one?
