The first free thing is that all banners allow you to free summon once. So if you are lucky, you might get a 5 star for free. Then they added Heroes version of tickets, that however doesn't happen often. The tickets are only for one specific banner, and you can only get max to 4 thanks to the Forging bonds event. And there was the anniversery event that allowed you to get one seasonal 5 star from each year. It was still random but it was free. And we also voted for a special banner that also allowed us to get one of the 4 that we voted for free but you could still summon normally after if you desire.
