Ok, seeing as I had way too much free time lately, I thought I'd do this in the same way I did FE12. Here probably isn’t the best place to post it, but I don’t yet have an account on Court Records.net

DISCLAIMER!!! EDIT: I WILL be translaing the entire game![/u] Sorry Capcom, but you've left me no choice.

This translation is my own work. If you wish to post it elsewhere please ask permission from me first, and be sure to credit me.

Gyakuten Kenji 2 is the property of Capcom. No copyright infringement intended.

Oh, and please DO NOT post any spoilers for the final game! This includes any differences between the demo and final version.

Opening notes:

-This is about 90% done. I haven't translated any failure dialogues (no interest), the opening text (scrolls too fast) one minor conversation and the dialogue for advancing to the end of the cross-examination. (not enough time) But the rest is all done.

-As you may know, a few of the character quirks are a little different in Japanese. I have tried to adapt some of them (Gumshoe and De Killer) but haven't had the chance to do that for Hayami, since I didn't pick up on the Kansai thing until a little while in. (more on her later)

-The new characters will be referred to using their Japanese names. However, of all the new characters introduced in the demo, only Hayami Mikiko (the girl with the backpack and microphone) is actually named. If you want to know, the Zheng Fa president is Teikun Ō, and the bodyguard is Manosuke Naitō, and the guy in the ending flash-forward is presumably Tateyuki Shigaraki, but that's really not all that important here.

-Note that the demo may not reflect the contents of the actual case in the final game. The demo of AAI1, for example, was significantly different to the final Turnabout Visitor.

EDIT: I’ll add a means of easy navigation between sections of the demo. I’ve split this into 4 parts, use Control-F to search for each part’s code.

[pt01] Intro

[pt02] Initial Investigation

[pt03] Hayami and Logic Chess

[pt04] First Cross Examination and Demo End

From now on, my notes will appear in [square brackets]

[pt01]

[i have yet to translate the actual text of the opening, but here's the general gist: a large plane descends for a landing in Gourd Lake. Everyone is exited for the President of Zheng Fa's arrival. The plane door opens and the president greets the crowd, he then begins his speech, apparently relating to the smuggling ring incident of AAI1, we then see a gun being raised. Just as the president says something like "but the battle isn't over yet"...]

[image of blood splatter, sound of shot]

President: Gyaaaaaaaaaah!

[The crowd panicks and runs in several directions, while the president's two bodyguards carry him into the plane. (note he's only wounded, not dead) The scene then cuts two Edgeworth puting on his coat in an excessively badass way, ready for yet another case.]

25th March 2:55 PM

Gourd Lake, Floating Stage

Edgeworth: (This has probably made worldwide news by now.

An attempt on the life of a country's president.

His condition hasn't been made public yet, maybe, maybe...)

[fade to portrait on black background]

Edgeworth: (My name is Miles Edgeworth. I'm a prosecutor at the DA's office.

I've been put in charge of this case, but...)

???: Prosecutor Edgeworth, hold up, pal!

Let's investigate enthusiastically!

Edgeworth: (This man's name is Dick Gumshoe.

He may not look it, but he's a juristrictioned detective.

He's often sent to help out on my cases.)

[cut back]

Edgeworth: Of course, detective. Would you give me the

facts of the case?

Gumshoe: The scene of the crime was here, at Gourd Lake.

Today, right here...

a welcoming event for the president of Zheng Fa was taking place.

Suddenly, in the middle of his speech..

BANG! A gunshot!

...or something like that.

[cut back]

Edgeworth: I presume security was tightened? [paraphrased that one a little, but I think it sounds better]

Gumshoe: We had police stationed at all the park's entrances, pal!

No-one could've gotten in or out since the time of the incident. [another bit of a paraphrase, but this, rather than "since the time of the incident the park was completely sealed off", fits a little better with the next line imo]

Edgeworth: That means the assassin must still be somewhere in the park...

[Note: bold represents orange text, italics represent green text]

[camera pans to audience]

Gumshoe: An assassin, among the crowd...

This is really dangerous, pal!

Edgeworth: If there is to be another crime, that person may be involved.

[cut back]

Edgeworth: The situation requires prompt action.

Let's begin the investigation quickly, firstly...

Gumshoe: Investigate the crime scene and gather information, pal!

Edgeworth: Precisely.

Edgeworth: I have some doubts over how the president was aimed at.

Logic Panel

"Firing at the President"

Text: The president was fired at during his speech.

He was under heavy guard at the time but...

Edgeworth: Detective Gumshoe!

At the time of the incident, what were the president's guards doing?

Gumshoe: The police were in charge of guarding the perimeter of the park.

The president's escorts were specialised Bodyguards.

[pans to bodyguards]

Those men over there...

how about listening to their story.

Edgeworth: (to speak to people I just press the talk button)

[you have control over Edgeworth now, but the game won't let you do anything until you speak to the two generic bodyguards near the plane]

[talking to bodyguards]

Bodyguard: What do you want?

Edgeworth: You are the president's bodyguards, are you not?

What happened while you were guarding the president during his speech?

Bodyguard: The president's surroundings were handled by two competent people.

They were deployed on the stage at the time.

Those guys are professionals.

They were always on the look out for suspicious people in the crowd...

Edgeworth: I see...

In other words, the president was guarded during his speech.

Logic Panel

"Guarded during Speech"

Text: Completely guarded during his speech.

They would have noticed any suspicious people.

Edgeworth: (In this vein, we speak to others, investigate suspicious things...)

Let's investigate what remains of the crime scene...

huh?

[pans down to girl in audience]

???: I see! That's how you obtain information.

Edgeworth: (...hm? What's that?)

???: And then, once you've got the information, what do you do with it?

Edgeworth: (The audience? There's someone there but,

I don't have time to sit and chat.

What concerns me is... Yes, there doesn’t seem to be any others.)

???: [waves arms] Heeeeeeeey, Mr Prosecutor!!

Could you teach meee?

Gumshoe: Once you've obtained sufficient information,

you search for connections between them.

Edgeworth: Detective!

???: Wooooow... such strong words.

And, if you find a connection?

Gumshoe: You summarise the connected information, pal!

That is Prosecutor Edgeworth's method.

It's called Logic, pal!

Edgeworth: (the logic panel starts the process, the connect button links information...

Now, to touch the logic button to start using logic)

[start Logic.

You don't have much choice here. Link "Shooting the President" with "Guarded during Speech"]

Edgeworth: The shooting took place while the president was under heavy guard.

To circumvent the eyes of professional bodyguards...

That's not something that can be done easily.

Which leads me to believe this was a well thought out crime.

It's a great possibility that every detail of the assassination was carefully planned.

Logic Panel

"Presidential Assassination"

Text: During the speech, a gunshot was heard, targeted at the president.

It seems this was a well planned crime.

Gunshoe: As expected from Prosecutor Edgeworth, superb logic!

Edgeworth: Yes, by finding the connections between information,

the truth shall reveal itself.

[health bar visible]

(However, if those connections are incorrect, the truth may become lost

I must be careful when constructing my logic.)

[pt02]

Gourd Lake, Floating Stage

INVESTIGATION BEGIN

Gumshoe: Right, first we must examine anything we can.

Edgeworth: (to examine, I move to a place of interest and touch the "examine" button

If I want to discuss the case, I should touch the "partner" button)

[Note: You can talk to "???" at this point, but I haven't translated that yet. She may actually mention Lotta by name, if I recall correctly]

[Examining the torn red material to the right of the stage]

Edgeworth: Hm...? Here too, we can see the remains of the ravages of this incident.

[go to examine view]

Suspicious places should be investigated thoroughly.

[examine - Steel Samurai Balloon in water]

Edgeworth: That's...?

Gumshoe: It surprised me too, pal.

Where have I seen that before...

Edgeworth: It's the Steel Samurai

(The Steel Samurai, warrior of Neo Olde Tokyo.

A popular hero on television.)

Gumshoe: But why would they use a Steel Samurai balloon

in a welcoming event?

Edgeworth: Well... isn't he a hero representative of our country?

Gumshoe: But... the hero has taken quite a fall,

it's almost pitiful to look at. [ok, I made some of this up, but I thought I needed to in order to convey the main idea]

Edgeworth: Right. Why did this happen...

Gumshoe: According to audience testimony, the balloon burst around the time of the gunshot.

Edgeworth: (Was the Steel Samurai hit by a bullet from the gun?)

Logic Panel

"The Broken Balloon"

Text: Burst at the time of the gunshot.

Was it hit by the bullet?

Gumshoe: It's like this is the case of the Steel Samurai's assassination!

Edgeworth: (They disgrace the Steel Samurai,

they will pay for this crime...)

[note: the term he uses usually means something along the lines of 'blasphemy'. lol Edgeworth's fanboy-ness]

(Steel Samurai Balloon jotted down in organiser)

[i will post each piece of evidence's description immediately after it's added]

text: Adorned the right side of the stage. Has burst.

[examine – Zheng Fa flag]

Edgeworth: The national flag of Zheng Fa.

Its symbol is a phoenix.

[note: lol, this certainly has another connotation in the English version. I won’t be surprised if it gets a reference]

Ah! This…

Gumshoe: What is it?

Edgeworth: Don’t you realise? There’s something unnatural about this flag…

[cut to image of flag flying]

Compare this to the flag on the opposite side of the stage.

Gumshoe: Hmm… there’s not one blemish, it’s a beautiful flag!

Edgeworth: Yes, that’s its original state.

[cut back to current examination]

But, there’s something wrong with this flag in front of us.

Gumshoe: W, where? Could you clearly show it, pal!

Edgeworth: (…that man still has no idea.

I’ll have to explain this in a way he can understand.)

(move the cursor to the odd part of the flag and touch the ‘present’ button)

[present – small green dot, just off the phoenix wing]

EUREKA!

Edgeworth: There’s an odd hole in this flag.

Gumshoe: Ah! That’s right!

Edgeworth: Judging by the blackened surroundings…

This would be a bullet hole.

Gumshoe: Bullet hole? That means the gun’s bullet penetrated the flag!

Logic Panel

“Bullet-holed flag”

Text: Adorned the right side of the stage.

Has a bullet hole.

Edgeworth (portrait): (hmm… we’ve gathered some important information.

Firstly, it would be wise to gather this information together.)

(there appears to be nothing more to check here)

[open Logic]

[Link: Broken balloon – Bullet holed flag]

Edgeworth: Two bullet holes have been discovered.

It ‘s obvious both were made by the same bullet that failed to kill the president.

Given their position… it’s hard to think the gunshot came from close range.

Which leads me to believe there was some distance between the target and shooter.

It seems the shooter may have been positioned in the audience.

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth! A report from the investigation team!

They found this in the audience, pal!

[evidence image – a raincoat]

Edgeworth: That’s… a raincoat.

Gumshoe: A bloodstain was found on the inside, pal.

Pretty suspicious if you ask me!

Edgeworth: If it was on the inside, then that would most likely be the owner’s blood.

Gumshoe: Incidentally… the bloodstain was found on the coat’s left hand side.

Edgeworth: Then the owner must have an injury on their right side.

This bloodstained raincoat… allow me to record it as evidence.

(Red Raincoat jotted down in organizer)

Text: This red raincoat’s owner must have been injured on the right side of their body.

[fade]

[pt03]

Edgeworth: Right, let’s continue the investig… hm?

???: Heeeey, Mr Prosecutoooor!

If you found something, could you tell me??

Edgeworth: The girl who got worked-up before, who exactly is she?

Gumshoe: I thought she was just pestering us but… she really seems interested in the case.

???: Pleeease!! Tell me how you got that red raincoat!

[music cut]

Edgeworth: Hm…?

What you said just now, do you know that red raincoat?

I’d like to hear you speak on the matter.

[scene cuts to portrait view]

Hayami: My name’s Hayami Mikiko!

In your own words, please tell us about this case. [holds out microphone]

[ On Hayami: As I kind of saw coming, but didn’t fully realise until about now, she speaks in a heavy Kansai accent, like Lotta and Furio Tigre do in the Japanese version. I am almost positive she’ll get a Southern accent in the English version, she may have even mentioned Lotta by name in an earlier optional conversation. I haven’t tried to adapt it for reasons stated earlier, but try to picture it while reading her lines.

Yeah, ‘The Tiger’ did get his adapted to Brooklyn, but he was a VERY different character, and I think that suited him a lot more. But for Hayami, all evidence points to her getting a Sothern accent.

Oh, one more thing, her Japanese name relates to haste, hurrying or rushing so I expect they’ll go with some kind of pun on that in the English version. Speculate away!

EDIT: It turns out she’s Lotta’s rival. Yup, she’ll definitely get a Sothern accent.]

Edgeworth: So you’re Hayami?

You don’t happen to have any information about this case, do you?

Hayami: That’s what I told you but…

I live by information; you won’t get it off me that easily.

Gumshoe: Hey, don’t be so stingy, pal.

Let’s all cooperate here.

Hayami: …stingy?

[angry] Hey, I was just trying to tell you,

Fine, I’ll look elsewhere.

Gumshoe: W, wait!

Hayami: Wait until I’ve given you the information?

After that you’ll just send me away, won’t ya? [note: slightly improvised here. I got pretty much the general gist of this exchange, but a direct translation didn’t really convey it well]

Gumshoe: Don’t be so harsh, this is no trick, pal.

Edgeworth: “no trick”, you say?

Gumshoe: What do you mean?

Edgeworth: Do know why I play chess?

When faced with a defensive opponent, what’s the best method of attack…?

There are countless tactics.

If this was a chess board…

Gumshoe: Uh, yeah. I don’t really know much about chess,

I can’t really understand it myself…

Edgeworth: At first glance, it’s a perfect defense but…

There’s always a gap.

Watch, with my words, I will shatter that defense…!

[fade]

Edgeworth: I will extract the story from this tight-lipped adversary.

For that, tactics are needed.

I picture a chess board, to read my opponent’s hand…

[chess board bg appears]

And analyse the battlefront.

Hayami: You’ll do anything until you get that information!

[a Pawn and King appear on Hayami’s side of the field]

Edgeworth: (my opponent’s guard is solid…

This is where their defensive strategy is located.

If I am to hesitant, they may grow impatient.

Pay attention to the time meter at the bottom of the screen.)

Edgeworth: But hastily throwing words about wouldn’t be wise either.

If I agitate my opponent, I may have a hard time.

Hayami: Talk, talk, talk!

You just don’t know when to quit!

Edgeworth: For example, in some cases, calmly waiting may be necessary.

If my opponent lets their guard down, that’s my chance.

Firstly, I should learn about this woman’s identity.

So… let’s begin.

[My gameplay notes, (in spoiler tags because you may not want to see this if you’re here for just the translation.

Basics of Logic Chess:

From what I’ve played, Logic Chess is to Edgeworth as Psyche Locks are to Phoenix: a secondary form of gameplay used while questioning witnesses who may be hiding something. However, while Phoenix uses evidence, Edgeworth uses dialogue alone to extract information.

Here’s how it works, you get one or more conversation topics at first, just like if you talk to a witness normally. After selecting one, dialogue progresses normally, but once you reach a certain point, you’ll be given the option to pursue this line of questioning further [the chess piece option] or back off for now. You’ll have to judge for yourself which option will work best in the given situation, but, as mentioned in the tutorial, you only have a limited amount of time to do so.

The Time Meter at the bottom of the screen only tick down when you have to make a choice. If at any time it runs out completely, you will incur a small penalty to your life bar (about 10%) and have to restart the Logic Chess segment from the beginning.

If you select a chess piece option that’s wrong, Edgeworth’s piece will fail to break his opponent’s, and you will incur a penalty to the time bar. There is, so far as I have seen, never a penalty for selecting “wait and see”, at worst, it’ll just take you back to the start of that conversation. In fact, as you’ll soon see, “wait and see” is often required several times before the right ‘opportunity’ to attack presents itself.

Some of the chess piece options may sound downright rash or just plain inflammatory, so it’s often obvious which are ‘wrong’, but this will probably change later in the game. (I’ve heard, for instance, that this relates to the witness’ personality, for example, there may be someone later on for which making them angry is to your advantage, while Hayami’s weakness seems to be flattery. )

If you’re really on to something, the chess piece image will change to one more powerful, but note that some of the opponent’s pieces will take more than one ‘hit’ to break. If your piece causes the witness’ piece to spin, but not break, then you’re on the right track, but you’ll need more than that. (this is not a wrong choice, quite the opposite. You won’t get penalized for this) You can tell that you’ve broken a piece if the music cuts after selecting an option, just like in Cross Examinations.

Also note that sometimes you will be given more than one chess piece option, usually only one is correct.

Okay, after that lengthy explanation…]

LOGIC CHESS:

BEGIN!

[select: “Your Identity”, it’s the only option]

Edgeworth: Firstly, could you tell me about your occupation?

Hayami: I decline.

It’d be too risky for me if I told you.

Edgeworth: Risky…?

In other words, it’s a job you can’t tell others about?

Hayami: I, it’s not like that!

I, I’m not suspicious!

Options:

(Pawn) You are discernibly suspicious!

Wait and see

[select ‘wait and see’]

Edgeworth: ………

Hayami: See, I’m a good citizen.

Edgeworth: Please excuse me for that, that was foolish.

I don’t understand the details but…

Your career must be a job deserving of praise.

Hayami: [flinch] Huh? Uh, yeeeah.

That may be exaggerating it a bit.

It’s all just writing articles…

Options:

(Pawn) An article-writing job?

Wait and see

[select the top option]

[music cuts]

Edgeworth: Hm…

Just now, you mentioned writing articles…

Your job, by chance, wouldn’t involve article writing, would it?

[Edgeworth’s Pawn smashes Hayami’s Pawn]

Hayami: D, dang iiiiiiiiiiiiit!!!!

….Y, yeah, that’s right, I’m a reporter.

An up-and-coming journalist!

Edgeworth: A reporter…?

Then perhaps you know some information about the incident

That, is what I will be questioning you about next.

[time meter fully restored]

Now we’re finally getting somewhere. Time to extract more information.

Options:

The coverage and content?

Did you witness the crime scene?

[if you select the top option]

Edgeworth: So, you’re a reporter, you say.

Then coverage of the event must have been your goal.

Hayami: No matter how much you keep asking…

I won’t just give up my information!

Edgeworth: No, this first!

Tell me about the coverage and content.

Hayami: You really don’t know anything, do you.

Edgeworth: ……..

I don’t think I have enough clues to progress this conversation.

I should try pressing something else.

[Edgeworth’s right, you can’t progress this line of questioning for now. Select the bottom option]

Edgeworth: At the time the incident occurred, were

You present at the scene?

Hayami: …Mr Prosecutor.

I already said I wouldn’t give out any information.

Edgeworth: No, it’s not that.

Just tell us your location first.

Hayami: I won’t talk!

You won’t get the information that easily!

Options

(Pawn) You could be arrested for this!

[Note: I’m REALLY not sure about this one, to be honest. Still, regardless of what it is, it’s the wrong option]

Wait and see

[select ‘Wait and see’]

Edgeworth: ……..

Hayami: This is just business… [note: may have missed something here]

Edgeworth: You hold your head high, but that may be hazardous to you.

Hayami: I… I’m a pro at this.

Something like a gunshot…

It’s no problem to me.

Options:

(Pawn) You heard a gunshot?

Wait and see

[select the top option]

Edgeworth: Hmpf.

I admire your professional attitude but…

You’re a little naive.

Hearing a gunshot would mean you were at the crime scene.

You must have seen something!

[Edgeworth’s Pawn attacks Hayami’s King. The King spins but doesn’t break]

Hayami: …y..you got me.

I got the chance to come and cover the event.

So… I just happened to come across the crime scene.

That’s it.

That’s all you’ll get out of me!

Edgeworth: (she came as a reporter to cover the event…

Then she should still have information for writing an article

Hmm… that could be an important clue.)

[You’ll be taken back to the two options from before. Go back to “coverage and content”. The conversation is the same up until the bit where you had to stop earlier. (Hayami’s “You really don’t know anything”) But now…]

Edgeworth: (I’ll use that clue here.)

Options:

(Knight) You must have materials for writing an article!

[note: this is your only option this time]

Edgeworth: You came to gather material for a report,

so you wouldn’t have left empty-handed.

You must still have that information on you!

[Knight hits King, it spins but still doesn’t break]

Hayami: …t, that’s…

Right! I’m a professional!

I earned that information all on my own!

That’s why I’m not going to hand it over!

Edgeworth: This is a direct request from

The prosecutor in charge of this case…

Hayami: Enough with your poisoned words!

I won’t hand over the thing you want!

Options:

(Pawn) Sorry to poison you

[note: or “The poison is bad”. This one’s really confusing me, I have no idea what it’s supposed to mean. Thankfully it’s not too important.]

Wait and see

[select ‘Wait and see’]

Edgeworth: ……..

Hayami: Please understand… Mr Prosecutor.

Edgeworth: Your career as a reporter…

Is it that important to you?

Hayami: Ah, so you do understand.

Edgeworth: What about your actual performance?

Hayami: Ah, t, that is…!

I, I’m always fully prepared.

For the coverage of the gunshot…

I had something I always carry with me…

Options:

(Pawn) Do you have an interest in gunshots?

(Pawn) Did you record the gunshot on tape?

Wait and see.

[select the second chess piece option. Note that Hayami’s sprite always carries a microphone]

[music cuts]

Edgeworth: I see…

You are always fully prepared.

Not bringing back materials would be unnatural.

So, you recorded the sound of the gun on tape, didn’t you?

[points finger]

Your information on this case…!

[Pawn attacks King, King breaks. The steel trap on Hayami’s bag snaps shut and she jumps with a start]

Hayami: Uh! Daaaaaang iiiiiiiiiiit!!!!!

My precious scoop…!

That’s right…

I have a tape of the gunshot.

It got captured while I was recording the president’s speech.

Edgeworth: Hm… I believe that’s Checkmate.

LOGIC CHESS:

CLEAR!

Hayami: A, amazing, Mr Prosecutor…

You got me to blab about everything.

Edgeworth: The tape of the gunshot…

Could we listen to it?

Hayami: You don’t have to ask so forcefully…

You found me out, so I’ll tell you everything.

[fade]

Gumshoe: A red raincoat?

Hayami: Just before the gunshot…

I saw a suspicious person in the audience.

Even thought the raid had stopped, they were still wearing a raincoat!

Gumshoe: We found this red raincoat earlier, pal!

Hayami: That’s it, that’s it!!

That red raincoat you’re holding!

The bright, flickering, red light, that’s what I saw!

Gumshoe: Red light?

What’s that about?

Edgeworth: I remember the moment of the gunshot.

There weren’t many sources of light around.

Perhaps, it was the light of a laser sight…

From our sniper.

The conclusion is clear.

The assassin who aimed at the president…

[image of shadowed figure in red raincoat]

Is the one wearing the red raincoat!

We know this person bears an injury on their right side.

There must be someone with that condition in the audience!

Edgeworth: Detective Gumshoe. Drag this assassin out of the crowd!

Gumshoe: Got it, pal!

[fade]

[pt04]

25th March 3:27 PM

Gourd Park, Audience Seating

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth!

We found a suspicious person in the condition you said!

Edgeworth: Detective, bring them here.

(That was a little slow.)

Gumshoe: Certainly!

Hey, you guys! Bring him in!

[‘Definitely not De Killer’ enters screen]

???: ……….

Gumshoe: You! State your name!

Doe: My name is… John Doe.

[Notes: “John Doe” A.K.A Shelly de Killer speaks in Keigo, extremely polite and formal language. It’s often used by shop assistants, waiters or when talking to someone very much your superior. With Doe, however, it kind of give a butler-like impression. Fortunately, this is very easy to adapt into English, just make him sound as formal as possible. I haven’t played 2-4 in a while, but I’m almost certain they made him speak like this there.]

Edgeworth: John Doe…?

(That’s an, odd name)

Doe: Good afternoon to you.

Edgeworth: (This man… have I met him somewhere before…?)

Doe: Could you please explain why I have been brought here?

Edgeworth: In our investigation into the President’s attack,

We are searching for an assassin.

Do you recognise this red raincoat?

Doe: I’m terribly sorry…

I don’t recognise it at all.

Edgeworth: I know that this raincoat belongs to the assassin.

Doe: That’s quite terrible.

Edgeworth: This person must also have a severe injury on their right side.

Precisely like yours…

Doe: I see no relation to me.

Hyami: Face off man to man!

Stare each other down like a laser beam!

… Hey, how was that?

Gumshoe: Of course, “confrontation”, pal!

A real one-one, no holes barred one battle of wits!

[Note: The kanji here literally translates as ‘fighting with real swords’ which seems to be a Japanese idiom for a serious contest (or something to the effect of ‘let’s get serious’) I’m trying to preserve the original meaning here.]

Edgeworth: (Should I hear his explanation?)

Listen

Don’t listen

[Okay, so here you get the option to go through a tutorial on cross-examinations or not, like every case 1 in the series. I haven’t translated the tutorial, really, if you’re reading this you’ve probably already heard this stuff about a hundred times before.]

[tes01]

WITNESS TESTIMONY

John Doe’s Testimony

1: I understand that someone wearing a raincoat would be suspicious.

2: But its owner wouldn’t necessarily have to be injured. There’s no evidence for that, right?

3: Indeed, my left arm is injured, but I can still use my right.

4: When it rained, I used an umbrella. I wouldn’t have any need for a raincoat.

Edgeworth: You didn’t wear a raincoat…

That’s your claim?

Doe: Do you understand? I am no assassin.

Edgeworth: A shame, but my principle is to always investigate things I’m unsure of.

Doe: Then I am sorry to inconvenience you. I am simply an honest ice cream seller… oops.

[“Doe”s wound bleeds, he wipes the blood with his ice cream napkin]

Doe: Please excuse me. In the panic earlier, my wound seems to have re-opened.

Edgeworth: (There’s no mistaking that the one who wore the raincoat

Is the assassin.

And the owner has an injury on their right side.)

Doe: ……….

Edgeworth: Mr Doe, I shall reveal your true colours for all to see.

REBUTTAL

[i won’t repeat the statements, I’ll just refer to them as Statement 1, Statement 2, etc. Look back at the testimony by Control-F’ing tes01]

[Pressing statement 1]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: You admit that a man in a red raincoat would be suspicious?

Doe: Yes. Since your police saw someone fitting that description in the crowd.

An “assassin”. That’s terrible.

[goes on to statement 2]

[Pressing statement 2]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: “The owner was injured.” What if there were evidence to prove that?

Doe: You certainly sound confident.

As expected from a genius Prosecutor.

Edgeworth: Hm… you know me?

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth is really famous, pal!

You probably heard about him in the newspapers.

Doe: I would like to see the results of your investigation.

Edgeworth: (This man is clearly more than he lets on.

If I expose his ‘lies’, I’ll reveal the assassin’s true nature!)

Doe: ………

[Pressing statement 3]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: That looks quite severe.

When did that injury occur?

Doe: ………..a short while ago.

Edgeworth: T, that’s all?

Doe: I have difficulty even making a single ice cream.

For your sake, I’ll say I couldn’t have held an umbrella in that hand.

[goes to statement 4]

[Pressing statement 4]

HOLD IT!

Egdeworth: Since I fist saw you, you were never holding an umbrella.

By chance, did you know the rain stopped just before the incident occurred?

Doe: I remember. That was when the number of guests swelled.

Edgeworth: There wasn’t as much as an hour between then and now.

How did that umbrella disappear in a matter of minutes!?

Doe: Aah… putting it away was my original intention.

In that crowd, having your umbrella stolen wouldn’t take any more that a minute, would it?

Edgeworth: [‘damage’ animation] Gah… that’s…

(Please say that isn’t true…!)

Doe: I had the umbrella when it was raining, that’s a fact.

[Okay, I think we all know where the contradiction is. Present the Raincoat at Statement 2]

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: On the inside of this raincoat, there is a small amount of blood.

A blood stain, left by the assassin!

Doe: !

[squeezes the ice cream cone so hard the scoop flies into the air and slowly falls down. The ice cream then starts dripping]

Gumshoe: Attacking the President is a serious crime, pal!

In Zheng Fa, and internationally!

Edgeworth:… no matter how long you refuse to speak, your [kisama, in katakana[\i]. Edgeworth’s really pissed now!] true nature will soon come to light.

A blood test will settle this matter.

This raincoat, was stained by the blood from your bandaged arm.

Doe: ……….. (ice cream ‘sweats’)

Edgeworth: The evidence is clear. Even you will admit that.

You, are the assassin who targeted the president!

Doe:……… I am no assassin.

Edgeworth: You don’t know when to give up.

If this were a chess game…

You would have been checkmated a long time ago.

Bravely admit defeat!

HOLD IT!

[cut across to everyone, with usual BOOM sound]

Edgeworth: W, who was that? That voice?

[cuts back to field view. Edgeworth looks left and right.]

???: Hold on a minute.

It’s a little too early for the endgame.

[A yellow haired bodyguard walks in]

???: Mr Prosecutor. Yeah, you.

Haven’t you already interfered with affairs too much?

We won’t forgive any more of this.

This comes from the President’s bodyguards.

[twirls gun around wildly, then points it, grinning]

The only one checkmated here is you.

Be a good boy and comply with us.

[literally “meekly obey us”, but that sounds kinda weird. I think this gets the meaning across, I picture the line sounding condescending]

Edgeworth: ……….

Edgeworth: It seems this case won’t be so easily resolved as I thought.

I’m concerned for the president’s safety. The turbulence of this incident may well continue.

But…

I have two pieces of logic.

I shall pursue the truth without fail!

A few days later

Date: ?? Day: ?? Time: ??:??

??????????

???: Mr Edgeworth. Your father’s path, do you still wish to aim for it?

Waging war on criminals as a Prosecutor,

Or protecting people as a Defense Attorney?

I want you to think it over, one more time.

Edgeworth: …….

Prosecutor?... Defense Attorney?...

I must… choose my own road……!

[There was one more sentence here, but it auto scrolled and I couldn’t quite get it in time]

[End]

  • 2 months later...

Okay, so sorry to bump this, but I feel the need to. If you can't tell by now: I am starting a full translation of this game. Thought I should post some stuff so you all know where I'm at, and with Court Records being deader than Deid Mann at the moment, I fugured I'd put it here.

Progress:

Case 1: About 40% (barring some optional dialogue)

My priority order is:

-Core gameplay dialogue, including evidence/logic

-Press conversations

-Optional Talks with characters

-Optional examinations in investigation (unless they're really interesting/hurorous, i.e. the one with ladders and step ladders in Case 3)

-Profiles (The reason: The game never tells you exactly when they're updated, and some go through several revisions in a very short space of time, so it's really easy to miss)

-Failure Dialogues

One thing, if you believe I've mistranslated something, please let me know. However, if it relates to something that's not relevent then, but is in a future case, please put it in spoiler tags, for the benefit of those reading this for the story.

And lastly, this will also function as a walkthrough of sorts. All solutions will be in spoiler tags, so that people who wish to figure it out for themself can do so.

Right then...

Case 1: Turnabout Target

[A side note first. Anyone remember the AAI1 demo? How, with the exception of one bit, it was pretty much the same as the final game? Well, not quite so here. The demo of this was pretty much a condenced version of what actually happens up to the first "To be Continued", but it did skip quite a lot. The beginning only adds a few extra lines here and there, but things will start to get a bit different later on. I warn you: the end of the first part contains a few shocking twists that weren't even hinted at in the demo. So yeah, even if you've played/read the demo, prepare to be surprised.

That being said, many lines are unchanged from the demo. When that's the case, I'll tell you.]

[intro. Yes, I finally managed to do this this time.]

I see it, he's arrived! The goodwill embasadors from the West* are coming!

[translator's note: Would be East in localisation. From its description, Zheng Fa would be West of Japan.

Also, I'm taking a little liberty with the first line. 見えました can mean either "To be visable" or "To arrive [formal]"]

The president's airplane has touched down at Gourd Lake!

Can you hear it?

The cheering!

Welcome, Zheng Fa! Welcome, President!

Mr President, listen. The audience is waiting for you.

[note: This is implied to be a different voice]

[president gives speech]

"Most esteemed guests!"

[lit. "My dear ladies and gentlement" or something to that effect. It's a very formal greeting, basically.]

"My reasons for this visit are thus!"

"Recently, the smuggling ring that has long plagued my country has been brought to its knees!"

[he literally says 'destroyed', but I tried to make it sound more natural without losing the meaning. He means utterly defeated.]

"Thanks to the strength of one of this country's Prosecutors!"

"I wish to extend my thanks to them from the bottom of my heart! But..."

"The battle is not over yet!"

"I declare, here and now!"

"I will hammer out all evil..."

[bang]

Kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Quich, contact the prosecutor's office!

Call that man over here!

Miles Edgeworth... if anyone can solve this case, it's him!

[Egdeworth puts on coat in a badass fashion]

March 25th 2:46 PM

Gourd Park, Guest Seating

Edgeworth: This has probably made wordwide news by now.

An attempt on the life of a country's president.

[cut to port. on black]

My name is Miles Edgeworth. I'm a procecutor.

[note: This line is actually less detailed then the demo version. Anyway...]

I came here after being contacted about this serious incident but...

???: Prosecutor Edgeworth!

[portrait] Hold up, pal!

[note: Gumshoe was already there before you]

Edgeworth: This man is Dick Gumshoe.

He's a juristrictoned detective who's always in charge of my cases.

[note: ...And Edgeworth manages to be less formal, and flattering, here than in the demo]

Edgeworth: Any word on the president's condition?

Gumshoe: We don't know yet, pal!

Emergency personel just entered the plane but...

Edgeworth: Is that right...

(At least he's getting help.)

[rough paraphrase since I didn't think the literal translation got the same meaning across]

Anyway, would you show me to the scene?

Gumshoe: Got it!

[They move towards the stage]

???: Hey, hey! Mister!

Edgeworth: (hm? What was that?)

???: Mister, are you the prosecutor in charge of this case?

Won't you say a few words?

Edgeworth: I refuse to comment.

Detective Gumshoe! Let's go!

???: Ah! Wait, Mr Prosecutor!

[on the stage]

Gumshoe: P, prosecutor Edgeworth!

Wait up, pal!

Edgeworth: So, detective. Could you give me the facts of this case?

Gumshoe: The scene of the crime was here, at Gourd Lake.

Today, right here...

a welcoming event for the president of Zheng Fa was taking place.

[image of newspaper. The headline reads: Zheng Fa President Visits. The other readable text on the side is something like "Fast response news". I believe it's just the name of the paper]

Edgeworth: The president of Zheng Fa, Teikun O. [note: I can't type the long o sound, basically, remember it's pronounced Ou, not Ohe]

Indeed, he was in the headlines a few days ago.

[Newspaper Article jotted down in Organiser]

Text: Contains an article on President O. Touch the Check button for details

Gumshoe: Even the rain lifted before his arrival, pal. But...

In the middle of his speech, suddenly!

Bang! A gunshot!

I think.

Edgeworth: You think?

Gumshoe: The truth is, I only just got here recently,

I don't really know all the details, pal...

Edgeworth: So, you were also called on short notice?

Gumshoe: That's right, pal...

Actually, I was supposed to be off duty today.

Edgeworth: I too, was preparing for a trial at the prosecutor's office...

Gumshoe: Mr Edgeworth, the Chief Prosecutor asked for you personally!

Edgeworth: The chief prosecutor?

Gumshoe: Yeah, they were attending the welcoming event.

When the incident occured, they cried out

"Get Miles Edgeworth! If there's anyone who can solve this case, it's him!"

Edgeworth: I see... so that's what happened.

[Translator's note: Regarding the Chief prosecutor. I'm using gender-neutural pronouns here, just to be sure. I'm pretty certain it's not Lana, but I still don't quite know exactly who it's referring to. There's a good chance it may be, umm, let's just say a certain important character we'll be meeting in Case 4, but it may not be.

I doubt they'd have asked for Edgeworth personally

Anyway, I hear they kind of bothced up the localisation of the term in the first place, apparently the Japanese version implies several people may hold that rank, as can be seen in PW:AA when Redd White calls a so-called 'chief prosecutor' to arrest Phoenix, who certainly wasn't Lana. Long story short, since they're only reffered to by title at this point, I'll do the same.]

Gumshoe: Since the time of the incident, the park was completley sealed off, pal.

Edgeworth: That means the assasin must still be in the park.

Gumshoe: An assassin, among the crowd...

This is really dangerous, pal!

Edgeworth: If there is to be another crime, that person may be involved.

[Okay, the next bit is near identical to the demo. The only difference is they actually reffer to the DS buttons in the tutorial text.]

Edgeworth: The situation requires prompt action.

Let's begin the investigation quickly, firstly...

Gumshoe: Investigate the crime scene and gather information, pal!

Edgeworth: Precisely.

Edgeworth: I have some doubts over how the president was aimed at with a gun.

Logic Panel

"Firing at the President"

Text: The president was fired at during his speech.

He was under heavy guard at the time but...

Edgeworth: (...Hm, I should make a mental note of that.)

Detective Gumshoe!

At the time of the incident, what were the president's guards doing?

Gumshoe: The police were in charge of guarding the perimeter of the park.

The president's escorts were specialised Bodyguards.

[pans to bodyguards]

Those men over there...

how about listening to their story.

Edgeworth: (to speak I get close to someone and press the A button)

Edgeworth: (In this vein, by speaking to others, investigate suspicious things...

We gather information from the crime scene.)

huh?

???: I see! That's how you obtain information from the crime scene.

Edgeworth: (...hm? What's that?)

???: And then, once you've got the information, what do you do with it?

Edgeworth: (The audience? There's someone there but,

I don't have time to sit and chat.

What concerns me is... Yes, there doesn’t seem to be any others.)

???: [waves arms] Heeeeeeeey, Mr Prosecutor!!

Could you teach meee?

Gumshoe: Once you've obtained sufficient information,

you search for connections between them.

Edgeworth: Detective!

???: Wooooow... such strong words.

And, if you find a connection?

Gumshoe: You link the connected information, pal!

That is Prosecutor Edgeworth's method.

It's called Logic , pal!

Edgeworth: (the L button starts the process, the X button button links information...

Now, to touch the logic button to start using logic)

Link "Shooting the President" with "Guarded during Speech"

Gourd Lake, Floating Stage

INVESTIGATION BEGIN

Gumshoe: Right, first we must examine anything we can.

Edgeworth: (To examine, I get close to a place of intrest and press the A button

If i wish to speak to the detective, I press the Y button)

[note: Since this is mostly the same, I had a bit of free time on my hands. So I've translated the optional dialogues for this segment.]

[Talking to Hayami]

???: Ah! Mr prosecutor!

How goes the investigation?

Edgeworth: (Hm. It's that girl from before)

I mustn't discus the facts with those unrelated to the case.

???: Aww... Mr Prosecutor, you're not answering me at all!

You're so strict, just like my mentor Lotta.

Edgeworth: (?, Have I heared that name before?

...It's probably just my immagination.)

[Talk to kneeling policeman]

Edgeworth: Have you found any evidence left by the assasin?

Forensics: No sir! It's completley clean!

We can't find any fingerprints of footprints either, sir!

Because everyone indifferently touched and walked over everything!

[translator's note: the police team use polite language when addressing Edgeworth]

Edgeworth: Detective Gumshoe. This doesn't inspire much confidence.

Gumshoe: I... I'll report to this guy's boss about a

salary review later, pal!

[wow, Gumshoe gets to cut someone else's salary for once!]

[Examing left red baloon]

Edgeworth: An apple-red baloon is floating in the lake breeze.

Gumshoe: When I was a kid, I used to send baloon letters.

That's when you tie a letter onto a baloon, as a way of finding a pen-pal.

Edgeworth: That's a very... interesting method of contacting someone.

Did you find this important person?

Gumshoe: Actually...

I didn't end up finding anyone.

I don't know if my baloons were blown off into the air.

Edgeworth: That's what happened!

[note: I believe baloon letters are a Japanese cultural refference, but the joke still works anyway.]

[Examine burst baloon on right]

[note: The dialogue is mostly the same as in the demo, but it's ordered differently]

Edgeworth: That's...?

Gumshoe: It surprised me too, pal.

Where have I seen that before...

[steel Samurai logo]

Edgeworth: It's the Steel Samurai

The Steel Samurai, warrior of Neo Olde Tokyo.

A popular hero on television.

(Widely supported by children and adults)

Gumshoe: But why would they use a Steel Samurai balloon

in a welcoming event?

Edgeworth: Well... isn't he a hero representative of our country?

Edgeworth: I won't rest until I've investigated every suspicious nook and cranny.

[Examine Steel Samurai Baloon]

Edgeworth: (They disgrace the Steel Samurai,

they will pay for this crime...)

...Detective. We must not let this heinous assasin escape.

Gumshoe: Of course, pal!

[steel Samurai Balloon jotted down in organiser]

text: Adorned the right side of the stage. Has burst.

[Examine Flag]

[note: Identical to demo]

(move the cursor to the odd part of the flag and press the X button)

present – small green dot, just off the phoenix wing

EUREKA!

Edgeworth: There’s an odd hole in this flag.

Gumshoe: Ah! That’s right!

Edgeworth: Judging by the blackened surroundings…

This would be a bullet hole.

Gumshoe: Bullet hole? That means the gun’s bullet penetrated the flag!

Logic Panel

“Bullet-holed flag”

Text: Adorned the right side of the stage.

Has a bullet hole.

Edgeworth (portrait): (hmm… we’ve gathered some important information.

Firstly, it would be wise to gather this information together.)

Logic: Link - Broken balloon – Bullet holed flag

[the following dialogue is completley different]

Edgeworth: A hole in a flag, and a burst baloon,

both caused by a bullet.

Gumshoe: That would mean two bullets were fired, pal!

Edgeworth: Along with the one that injured the president, that would make 3.

But there's also the possibility that the same bullet hit both the flag and baloon.

If I knew the number of gunshots, I could be certain...

INVESTIGATION CLEAR

Edgeworth: Right, let’s continue the investig… hm?

???: Heeeey, Mr Prosecutoooor!

If you found something, could you tell me??

Edgeworth: The girl who got worked-up before, who exactly is she?

Gumshoe: I thought she was just pestering us but… she really seems interested in the case.

???: Heey! Please show meeeee!

Edgeworth: .........

if I want to know the number of gunshots,

i'd need to speak with someone who witnessed them.

It seems there's no other way.

Let's listen to her.

???: Ah! Mr Prosecutor!

I'm Mikiko Hayami!

In your own words, please tell us about the case.

Edgeworth: (My own words)

So you're Hayami.

I'd like to tell you about the ca...

Hayami: [cuts him off] Is your investigation progressing smoothly?

Edgeworth: .........

Hayami: The criminal's objective?

Where did you buy that crevat?

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Could you be quiet for a moment.

That's not what we want to talk about.

Hayami: What? I don't get to ask questions?

I wanted to interview you...

Edgeworth: I'd like to know about the number of gunshots.

Could you tell us about the state of the case?

Hayami: Yeah. That's...

I'm not telling ya!

Edgeworth: What's that?

Hayami: Information is my life.

You won't get it off me that easily!

[note: The logic chess segment is completley identical to the demo. I'll reproduce it for convenience sake]

LOGIC CHESS:

BEGIN!

[select: “Your Identity”, it’s the only option]

Edgeworth: Firstly, could you tell me about your occupation?

Hayami: I decline.

It’d be too risky for me if I told you.

Edgeworth: Risky…?

In other words, it’s a job you can’t tell others about?

Hayami: I, it’s not like that!

I, I’m not suspicious!

Options:

(Pawn) You are discernibly suspicious!

Wait and see

Select ‘wait and see’

Edgeworth: ………

Hayami: See, I’m a good citizen.

Edgeworth: Please excuse me for that, that was foolish.

I don’t understand the details but…

Your career must be a job deserving of praise.

Hayami: [flinch] Huh? Uh, yeeeah.

That may be exaggerating it a bit.

It’s all just writing articles…

Options:

(Pawn) An article-writing job?

Wait and see

Select the top Pawn option

Wait and see

select ‘Wait and see’

Edgeworth: ……..

Hayami: This is just business… [note: may have missed something here]

Edgeworth: You hold your head high, but that may be hazardous to you.

Hayami: I… I’m a pro at this.

Something like a gunshot…

It’s no problem to me.

Options:

(Pawn) You heard a gunshot?

Wait and see

select the top option

Wait and see

select ‘Wait and see’

Edgeworth: ……..

Select the second Pawn option

[music cuts]

Edgeworth: I see…

You are always fully prepared.

Not bringing back materials would be unnatural.

So, you recorded the sound of the gun on tape, didn’t you?

[points finger]

Your information on this case…!

[Pawn attacks King, King breaks. The steel trap on Hayami’s bag snaps shut and she jumps with a start]

Hayami: Uh! Daaaaaang iiiiiiiiiiit!!!!!

My precious scoop…!

That’s right…

I have a tape of the gunshot.

It got captured while I was recording the president’s speech.

Edgeworth: Hm… I believe that’s Checkmate.

LOGIC CHESS:

CLEAR!

Hayami: A, amazing, Mr Prosecutor…

You got me to blab about everything I know.

[note: About now is when the similarities to the demo end]

Edgeworth: The tape of the gunshot…

Could we listen to it?

(From that tape, we should be able to determine number of gunshots)

Hayami: It's fine, but...

Before we listen to it...

No-one's ever talked me down like this but my mentor, Mr Prosecutor.

Hey, you could be my second mentor!

I officially approve you!

Gumshoe: I see... like a "second home"!

Hayami: One more thing...

It's a 24 Hour permit!

Please! Mr Prosecutor!

I'll be your trusted disciple from beginning to end!

Edgeworth: (It's an unreasonable proposal, but she's not going

to let me play the tape otherwise...)

I decline the 24 hour part.

You can stay with us until the case is resolved, no longer.

Hayami: And, about becoming my second mentor?

Edgeworth: Out of the question.

Hayami: Aww... you're so mean...

But, I'll go along with you, for my precious scoop [rough paraphrase]

Alright, let's hit it! Time to start our comprehensive coverage!

Edgeworth: Anyway... Hayami, could you just go ahead and play the tape, quickly.

[fade]

Wrrrrrrrrrrr

Click...

O: "Most esteemed guests!

My reasons for this visit are thus!

Recently, the smuggling ring that has long plagued my country has been brought to its knees!"

Edgeworth: Right... this would be the president's speech.

Wrrrrrrrrrrr

Click...

???: "The president really has the crowd worked up into a frenzy!

This'll deal a serious blow to those rumours of a bad approval rating!"

Hayami: Oh, that's my commentary.

I just wanted to leave my own impression on this event.

Edgeworth: Hm?

???: "The plan was to have a meeting after this...?"

???: "There seems to be much joy in the atmosphere.

The Yatagarasu case has been resolved, has it not?"

??? "Of course, of course.

This is certainly a glorious occasion."

[note: This voice uses Keigo. Could it be...?]

Edgeworth: And that voice is?

Hayami: Some guests standing right in front of me.

Sounded like two middle-aged men.

They spoke in a veeeeeeeery quiet voice.

Edgeworth: That voice, I feel like I've heared it somewhere before...

Hayami: Oh! The gunshot is coming up soon.

Wrrrrrrrr

Click...

Hayami: "The president raises his fist to the sky!

The exitement in here is reaching its peak!"

O: "The battle is not over yet!

I declare, here and now!

I will hammer out all evil..."

[bang!]

[bang!]

Hayami "w, What the?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

...click...

wrrrrrrrrrr....

[Hayami's Gunshot Tape jotted down in organiser]

Text: Recorded the gunshots during the president's speech.

Two gunshots can be heared.

[Note: You can also use the 'Check' button to re-read the taped dialogue]

Edgeworth: It seems... that two shots were fired.

Hayami: So... did you discover something?

Edgeworth: It's simple, really.

The bullet's path... it's possible to deduce its trajectory.

[a diagram of the stage appears]

Two bullets were fired. The first injured the president.

That means the other must have both penetrated the flag and burst the baloon.

Now do you understand?

Where the criminal was standing...

The shot that hit the baloon and flag was fired from here!

Select the left side of the audience. About halfway along should work

Edgeworth: By connecting the bullet holes in the baloon and flag,

the bullet's path can be determined.

We can see the bullet was fired from the left side of the audience.

[bullet's Trajectory jotted down in organiser]

Text: From the bullet holes, it can be deduced that the two bullets

were fired from the left side of the audience.

[You can use 'Check' to look at the diagram]

Gumshoe: As expected, Prosecutor Edgeworth!

Edgeworth: Detective Gumshoe, I'd like to investigate the left side of the seating area.

Gumshoe: Roger... is what I wanna say, pal but, how do

we move so many guests?

Edgeworth: I see. But moreover, the evidence may also be lost if we dalay too long.

We must make haste...1

Gumshoe: R, roger!

Hayami: 2nd Mentor!

Hey, 2nd mentor!

Edgeworth: Hayami, I'm sorry, but could you perhaps...

[note: I think he's trying to politely tell her to leave him alone]

Hayami: Don't worry about it, 2nd mentor.

Now, it's my turn to repay you!

The audience if getting out of hand! It's really dangerous,

you could get beaten up.

Edgeworth: Look, if you want to show your thanks

by cooperating, could you just stop doing that?

We'll discuss the mentor issue later. Just not now.

Hayami: Got it. I'll be as careful as possible.

Your every wish is my command, Mr Prosecutor.

Edgeworth: (sigh...)

[Well, that's about all I have time for now. But I have done more. I'll put it up later.]

  • 2 weeks later...

Progress: Up to first save point done.

[at the left side of the audience]

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth! Let's prepare the area for investigation!

Hayami, could you get off that puddle in the audience.

Hayami: Compared to the rough way my 1st mentor treated me, this is no problem.

Edgeworth: But Hayami, it's the fault of people running over the ground...

Someone will have to get their clothes dirty. It's the price we'll have to pay.

Hayami: Eh? Mr Prosecutor! If that's the case, then there's no need to worry!

My Parka's reversible, so I can just turn it back and it'll be clean and tidy again.

Edgeworth: (But, that wouldn't get rid of the dirt...)

[note: it's literally something like "but then the dirt will just fall out again", but I think he's just pointing out that Hayami's solution isn't long term]

Gumshoe: Well then, Prosecutor Edgeworth. Let's finally start the investigation, pal!

Edgeworth: (The ground has been greatly disturbed by the crowd...

Where would we find any clues the criminal left behind...)

Gourd Park, Audience Seating

INVESTIGATION: BEGIN

(talk to Winston Payne)

???: This is a terrible occurence indeed, Prosecutor Edgeworth.

Edgeworth: ........

(Who is this man, again?)

Payne: I, Winston Payne, am also assisting as a prosecutor.

Edgeworth: (h, he's a prosecutor...?)

Why did you come here today?

Payne: Hehehe. I came as a 'friend' of the Chief Prosecutor.

Edgeworth: (Hm? Could he be one of the voices I heared on the tape before?

Was this man the one atanding in front of Hayami?)

Edgeworth: And where is the Chief now?

Payne: The chief is, busy. He was allowed exception to leave the blockade, due

to a 'special case'.

Edgeworth: (He called me here, then left himself...?

I'm not satisfied with that explaination.)

[note: This is more than just a cameo, like he got in AAI1. This conversation is actually mandatory, you'll see why later. Oddly though, he still doesn't get a sprite]

[Examine the bin]

Hayami: Do we really have to search through the garbage?

Mr Prosecutor! This is terrible.

Edgeworth: Detective Gumshoe.

Gumshoe: Roger!

Hayami: Sifting through the garbage is Mr Detective's job. You don't have to sully your hands, Mr Prosecutor...

Gumshoe: Riiiiiight, let's see if we can't find something good in here, pal!

Edgeworth: (Is it my imagination, or does he actually not mind doing this?)

Gumshoe: T, this is!

Hey, an ice cream stick?!

Edgeworth: Detective!

Gumshoe: S, sorry, pal! As for anything relating to the casem I found no...

huh?

I found this, pal! [a black bum-bag]

Edgeworth: Good work, Detective. [okay, it's literally "that must have been hard on you/you took great pains", but in Japanese, such phrases are pretty much synonamous with 'good job', which fits better here]

Let's examine it immediately.

[examination view... okaaaaaaay, prepare for mandatory tutorial]

Edgeworth: By investigating various areas, the truth will reveal itself.

Gumshoe: Right, pal! Turn the evidence around and look at it from different angles!

Edgeworth: (use the R and L buttons gto rotate the evidence into a suitable position)

Gumshoe: When you want to look up close, or further away, move the evidence yourself, pal!

Edgeworth: (The X button zooms in, the Y button zooms out. Examine every point in thougrough detail.)

Gumshoe: If you find something suspicious, be sure to tell me immidiately, pal!

Edgeworth: (If I find a point of concern, I point the cursor at it and press the A button)

Edgeworth: Okay, let's try it immidiately.

examine clasp

[a piece of paper comes out]

Edgeworth: Some kind of document...?

Gumshoe: What, what...

It says "About the President's security"

This would be, a document of the president's security plans, pal.

Edgeworth: (This depicts the positions of the bodyguards.)

Gumshoe: It even has the bodyguards' names written: Tojiro and Naito...

Edgeworth: Hm? The bodyguards aren't Zheng Fa citizens?

[translator's note: Yes, the bodyguards aren't from Zheng Fa, and thus don't need to conform to the localisation's naming conventions for the country. This may prove interesting.]

Hayami: It seems like the president made a request to a private security company.

[translator's note: KB Security?]

Edgeworth: Why didn't he use Zheng Fa security?

Hayami: Haven't you heared the reason? It's a massive scoop!

Edgeworth: Do you know something?

Hayami: A while back, I did some coverage at the Zheng Fa embassy. At that time, I only heared...

The president has many enemies.

I hear his relationship with the high-ups of Zheng Fa security is pretty bad.

Edgeworth: I see. So he can't even depend on his own people.

(And today, there was an attempt on his life. This must be connected somehow.)

[security Plan Data jotted down in organiser]

Text: Lists bodyguard's positions.

Top secret information.

Touch the check button for details.

[translator's note: Okay, there are a lot of handwritten notes on the paper, which are an utter nightmare to translate. I can only read a few. I will assure you, however, that you are not required to be able to read any of these to work out any contradictions. Here's what I have:]

[top left corner, with chess piece icons]

Leader: Tojiro

Sub: Naito

[red arrow pointing at rook on stage:]

"Tojiro will cover Naito's injury"

[note: Thankfully, these are the main two details that become inmportant later]

Gumshoe: But, why was this in the bag?

Edgeworth: ...This is certainly strange.

That data relates to the president's safety. It would be essential to treat it strictly.

Gumshoe: Hm? There's... something else in the bag, pal!

Edgeworth: T, this is...!

Gumshoe: A g-g-g-g-gun!

Prosecutor Edgeworth!

Do you think, this bag...

Edgeworth: Yes. This was most likely discarded by the assasin

(A pistol. how could something like that appear here?)

Logic Panel: Pistol [note: it literally says something like '6-shot rapid-fire pistol', but that'd be a little unwieldy. Or does it reffer to a specific model of gun?]

Text: Discovered in the garbage bin near the seating area.

It would be difficult to obtain such a weapon this in this country.

Edgeworth: (Is our criminal a proffesional assasin?)

Gumshoe: That document was probably part of the criminal's preparations!

Edgeworth: This gun...

It is necissary to examine it carefully.

Examine laser scope on top

Edgeworth: This... would be a laser pointer.

Gumshoe: It's an implement you attack to a gun to help you aim, pal!

Press here and...

A red lazer comes out!

Edgeworth: (Did the assasin use this laser pointer to aim at the president?)

Logic Panel: Laser Pointer

Text: A device that aims a red laser.

Found attached to the murder weapon.

examine the bullet chamber

Edgeworth: This gun fired two bullets?

That matches the number of gunshots heared...

Gumshoe: This must be the weapon in today's assasination, pal!

[Gun jotted down in organiser]

Text: Discovered in the garbage bin on the left side of the audience.

Has fired two shots. Has laser pointer attached.

Gumshoe: This bag is vital evidence, pal!

Amazing, the things you find in the trash! [rough paraphrase, but judging by his expression it's meant to convey something like this]

Edgeworth: Good work, Detective.

I'd like to ask something of you.

Could you have the crime lab check the gun and bag for fingerprints?

Gumshoe: Roger! [leaves]

Edgeworth: (Getting fingerprints would mean a huge step foward for the investigation)

Gumshoe: I've got the results back, pal!

Edgeworth: S, so soon...

Gumshoe: That's right!

A super express delivery, pal!

The result: they couldn't find a single print.

Edgeworth: You examined it completley!

Gumshoe: From corner to corner, pal!

We even removed the bullets and examined them!

Edgeworth: (It seems it won't be that simple.)

[optional: talk to Hayami]

[to be added]

[optional: talk to Gumshoe]

[to be added]

[optional: talk to cameraman before doing the above]

[to be added]

[talk to cameraman after doing both the above]

[note: Okay, this is the event that progresses the game, but I found the exact trigger for this event flag really odd. I ended up activating it by talking to Winston Payne a second time, after doing the whole garbage event. Either the event flag for talking to him only works after examining the bin, or you need to talk to him twice. I don't know.]

Edgeworth: You are the TV staff, are you not?

TV Staff: Ah. Err.

That's right but...?

Edgeworth: Then you would have filmed the speech, right?

I'd like to see the video.

TV Staff: Ah, right, that, would be... 'difficult'.

Gumshoe: What was that, pal? It's your duty as a citizen to cooperate with the investigation!

TV Staff: After the incident, the guests knocked over the TV camera in the panic. The tape vanished.

Edgeworth: If that tape was left behind, it would be vital evidence...

Gumshoe: Yeah. It's a real shame, pal.

???: Hahahaha!

Hahahahahahaha!

Edgeworth: W, what was that?

???: Looks like you could use a hand, Mr Edgeworth.

Edgeworth: That voice!

Kay!

Kay: Long time no see, Edgeworth!

Hero of Justice, Kay Faraday, at your service!

Edgeworth: (hero... I wouldn't call this girl a heroine...)

So, have you quit this 'Great Thief' buisness yet?

Kay: Nope, I haven't stopped, I'm just on vacation!

I'm in the muddle of training to become the 2nd Yatagarasu!

[fade]

Edgeworth: About two weeks ago, this girl became involved in one of my cases.

The mysterious phantom thief "Yatagarasu".

The case of a gentleman thief who steals the truth, for the sake of justice.

This girl is the successor to that 'Great Thief'.

Kay: Picking locks, rope escapes, just leave it to me!

But... since I'm still in training, I haven't actually stolen anything yet.

Edgeworth: Kay, what are you doing here?

Kay: I decided to participate in the celebration!

Edgeworth: (She seems to have a fondness for these kind of events...)

Kay: Afterwards, I figured I'd run into you guys!

Gumshoe: Well, I'm glad that happened!

You look like you've been well!

Kay: It's been a while, Gummy!

I'm glad you're well too!

Edgeworth: Kay, you said earlier you meant to help me out...

Kay: Hehehe. Why are you so surprised?

I took a photo of the very moment of the crime!

Edgeworth: I see...

Could you show them, quickly.

Kay: The same as usual, I see. Can't tou show a little exitement?

Hayami: That's right! That Mr Prosecutor's always in a bad mood.

I'm starting to regret making him my 2nd mentor...

Ah, I'm Mikiko Hayami, a reporter, by the way.

Kay: Hayami! Pleased to meet you!

Yeah, Mr Edgeworth's really...

Edgeworth: This conversation is a waste of time.

Could you just show us the photo?

Kay: Hm. I got it!

Right!

Kay: It's a photo I took right at the moment of the gunshot! It was terrible!

All the guests were running in panic.

Edgeworth: (This photo depicts the president and his two bodyguards.

From the names written on the security plan, there's no doubt there are Tojiro and Naito...

hm?

This is...?)

... Thank you, Kay.

This will be an important clue.

Hayami: Oh! You've got that sharp glare in your eyes!

Mr Prosecutor! Perhaps you've found something?

Edgeworth: In this photo...

It seems there is a contradiction.

Hayami: This photo...?

What's so strange about it...

Edgeworth: If you don't understand, then I'll show you.

(In this photo, by pointing out a position, along with evidence on hand...

Between these two, the contradiction will become apparent. From there I will begin my reasoning.)

(Firstly, I point to the contradictory area...)

point to the red dot on the president's forehead. No need to press A, the game automatically progresses

(Once I've found the contradiction, aim at it and press the X button!

Then, present the evidence that contradicts that point!)

Present Newspaper Article

Edgeworth: Miss Hayami. This newspaper contains a photograph of the president.

I'd like to compare this with the photo Kay took at the scene.

Hayami: Mm? What do you mean...

......Ah!

Edgeworth: That's right. There's something off about the president's forehead.

Gumshoe: Is that... a mole?

Kay: Mmm-hm, it certainly looks like a red mole.

Logic Panel: Red 'Mole'

Text: In a photo taken at the moment of the incident,

a red dot can be seen on the president's forehead.

Edgeworth: That's foolish. It's hard to think a mole would appear so quickly.

Gumshoe: Maybe a bug bit him, pal!

Hayami: Hey, what are you saying? If you think about it, it clearly isn't just a bug.

When Mr Prosecutor says something with such a serious face, it has to be important.

Edgeworth: hm. The way to reach for the truth... begins with finding small contradictions like this.

Hayami: Oh! That's a great way of putting it! Please, show us!

[Kay's Photo jotted down in organiser]

[spoiler: Logic: Link Laser Pointer - Red Mole

Edgeworth: I've solved the mystery of the red mole.

Gumshoe: Eh? You mean, it's not a bug bite, pal?

Edgeworth: It wasn't solved through a bug bite or an itch. [note: REALLY don't know what to make of this. It may be a joke, 'if it were a bite, it would be solved by itching', but that's not really in Edgeworth's character]

This is the light of a laser pointer.

Gumshoe: Then, that means the president's forehead was aimed at with the gun!

Edgeworth: And then, after this, two gunshots were heared...

Gumshoe: That's more than just an itch, pal.

Edgeworth: Indeed. I'm concerned for the president's safety...

(There's a strong possibility that this gun was the murder weapon)

[Murder weapon: Gun updated]

[note: oddly, the text hasn't changed]

Gumshoe: But, why did the criminal use a laser pointer?

Kay: That's right! It causes light to come out of your hand!

Bibibibibibibi! Waaaaaaay too conspicuous!

Edgeworth: If you followed the laser, you would find the one who fired the shot.

Gumshoe: That's not all that good, pal.

Kay: Yeah! I've even got another photo.

In it, the light of a laser, caught on camera!

Edgeworth: (Is is possible she saw something?)

Kay, could you show us that photo?

Kay: Coming right up!

Firstly, the photo from before the incident...

Edgeworth: Uh... your face is taking up most of the frame.

Kay: Ehehehe. I wanted to get a 'two-shot' of me and the president.

I took this a little before the gunshot.

And, here's the one I showed before.

This was immediately after the first gunshot.

Right after I took this, I heared another gunshot!

Kay: And then...

Edgeworth: This is?

You can't really see much in this photo...

Kay: Just after that last photo, one of the running guests knocked me down.

It looks like the shutter clicked right then.

Gumshoe: This doesn't look too helpful, pal...

Kay: Well, those are all the photos I took.

[Kay's Photos updated]

Edgeworth: (I'd like to examine these in a bit more detail)

Which photo to investigate?

-Before the incedent

-Moment of the incident

-After the incident

[selecting 'before the incident']

where can you see the light of the laser pointer?

Select the laser beam on the man's [Winston Payne] back. it's in the bottom left of the frame. Look for the person in the red hoodie, you can't miss it.

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: I found it...!

Gumshoe: W, what's that, pal?

Edgeworth: Look just in front of the person in the red hood.

Kay: Ah! There!

Edgeworth: That's it. It's the light of the laser pointer.

Gumshoe: T, then! That red hooded person!

Edgeworth: Would be... the assasin.

Kay: Yipee! I really achieved something, didn't I!

Edgeworth: Right. As expected from the Great Truth Burgler.

Kay: hehehe.

Edgeworth: Perchance, the criminal can also be seen in the other photos.

I'd like to investigate once more.

In which photo can the red hooded assasin be seen?

-Before the incident

-During the incident

-After the incident

select After

Where can the red-hooded assasin be seen?

Present: Red coated person. look just below the most foregrounded person's black bag

TAKE THAT!

Kay: Ah! Them!

edgeworth: The 'red hooded'... Assasin.

Gumshoe: It looks like they're escaping in the panic.

Edgeworth: We can see the direction they ran in...

Kay: Ah! The 'Samurai Dog stand banner!

Edgeworth: Right. The assasin escaped towards the right side of the audience.

Detective Gumshoe!

Gumshoe: Got it, pal! Let's investigate the right side of the audience.

Edgeworth: I'm counting on you.

(The red hooded assasin...

Since the park was surrounded, there's nowhere they could've run to...

If we follow their trail, we'll surely catch them!)

[At the right of the audience]

Edgeworth: Well then, let's continue our investigation.

Kay: We've just gotta find evidence of the assasin!

[optional examinations to be added]

[Examing Samurai Dog stand]

Edgeworth: I won't rest until I've investigated every suspicious looking nook and cranney.

examine small red button

Edgeworth: This is...?

Gumshoe: Looks like a red button, pal.

Is this maybe...

Logic Paanel: Red Button

Text: Found near the stand.

Appears to have been ripped off something.

Edgeworth: Perhaps this is connected to the red hooded person.

Examine red object sticking out from under the stand

Edgeworth: (There's something red here too...)

Detective Gumshoe.

I'd like you to investigate under the stand.

Gumshoe: What could've fallen under here, let's see...

Edgeworth: A red raincoat...

Could this be!

Kay: The assasin's!

Edgeworth: It appears they discarded the raincoat as they fled.

[Red Raincoat jotted down in organiser]

Text: Appears to have been discarded by the red hooded person.

Found under the stand.

examine Sleeve of raincoat

Edgeworth: This sleeve... it's been turned inside-out.

It seems the button has fallen off too.

Logic Panel: Red Raincoat Sleeve

Text: The right sleeve in inside-out, and the button is missing.

Logic: Link Button - Red Raincoat Sleeve

Edgeworth: It looks like the fallen button comes from this raincoat.

It may have fallen off when the assasin removed it.

Gumshoe: If you look closely, you can see the right sleeve is inside-out, pal.

Edgeworth: It appears they took it off in a hurry...

The button came off immidiately.

The assasin, after shooting the president, disposed of the gun and bag in the garbage bin.

Then, during the panic, they moved from the left side of the audience to the right.

The trajectory leads us to suspect someone standing on the left side.

And then, they removed the raincoat and hid it under the stand.

The assasin discarded the raincoat immidiately. So the right sleeve was hastily removed.

Gumshoe: The button must've come off.

Edgeworth: If that's so... why isn't the left sleeve in that state?

Gumshoe: Ah! That sleeve isn't inside-out!

edgeworth: On the contrary, the button is still tightly fixed.

Gumshoe: What do you mean, pal!

Edgeworth: To find the answer...

We must examine this raincoat in detail.

[examine right sleeve]

edgeworth: the right sleeve has been turned inside-out.

Kay: It must have been left like this after the button was torn off.

Edgeworth: Indeed. It seems they were really in a hurry when they took it off.

examin the zipper on the other half

Edgeworth: I'd also like to examine the inside of the raincoat.

Detective Gumshoe!

Gumshoe: Roger!

[raincoat opens]

examine bloodstain on inside of raincoat

Edgeworth: This is a...bloodstain!

Judging byb the location... This is most likely the assasin's own blood.

Gumshoe: So, we're looking for someone who's injured, pal!

Edgeworth: But not just a simple injury, detective. An injury on their left arm.

Gumshoe: W, why's that, pal?

Edgeworth: When they took off their coat, the criminal was panicked.

We can see by the state of the right sleeve.

But the left sleeve is still as it is, how did this difference arise?

It's simple, the assasin couldn't get his arm through the left sleeve.

By considering this, we can understand the circumstances.

Furthermore, a bloodstain was found on the left side of the raincoat.

Gumshoe: I see!

The injury must've passed through.

Edgeworth: Yes, indeed. The possibility is great.

[Red Raincoat updated]

Text: The inside is stained with blood.

The 'red hooded person' is injured on their left arm.

Edgeworth: (So, it has come to this...)

INVESTIGATION CLEAR

Edgeworth: Detective Gumshoe! Drag this assasin out of the crowd!

Gumshoe: Got it, pal!

A person injured on their left arm! Leave it to me!

Hayami: Mr Prosecutor! You're so much smarter than even I expected!

With just that much evidence, you could totally find the assasin.

Kay: As expected, Mr Edgeworth!

Edgeworth: (The park has been surrounded. That means the assasin must still be in the crowd.

I'm counting on you... Detective Gumshoe!)

Experimenting with colours to try and replicate the coloured fonts used in the game.

Same Day, 3:27 PM

Gourd Park, Audience Seating.

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth, we found a suspicious person in thatcondition, pal.

Kay: That's gotta be the assasin!

Edgeworth: Kay. That doesn't mean there is proof this man is the assasin.

For now, they are just a witness. Don't jump to conclusions.

Kay: Okay, I get it! I'll control myself!

Gumshoe: There's no doubt this is the guy who targeted the president, pal!

Edgeworth: (What kind of petty person would target him in front of the audience...)

Detective Gumshoe. Bring them here... courteously.

Gumshoe: Got it! Hey, you guys! Bring him in!

[note: Watch Kay closely as 'John Doe' is brought in. She's already throwing punches!]

[another note: Unlike the demo, it actually plays De Killer's theme here! Yeah, as if it wasn't any more obvious]

???: ..........

Edgeworth: (They're not holding an umbrella, and their arm is bandaged...)

Gumshoe: You! State your name!

Doe: My name is... John Doe.

Edgeworth: John Doe...?

(That's... an unusual name.)

Doe: That is correct.

[note: Sorry, I epically mistraslated this in the demo. Turns out さようございます (sayougozaimasu) is just the uber-polite form of そうです (soudesu, "that's right" or "that is so")]

Doe: Prosecutor Edgeworth, sir. [note: "John Doe" reffers to everyone as sama]

Edgeworth: ? You know my name?

Doe: .......Yes. I have observed your investigation.

Could you please explain why I have been brought here.

[note: everything following, up to the tutorial, is identical to the demo]

[if you choose listen]

Gumshoe: The witness may lie, or misunderstand things.

If you find a contradiction in their statement, present evidence, pal!

Edgeworth: (Press the R button to look at the organiser,

and the X button to present.)

Hayami: And if you don't find a contradiction, what do you do then.

Gumshoe: At those times, you press the witness for more details.

Edgeworth: (To press, press the L button)

Gumshoe: All right, could you give us a demonstration, pal!

Hayami: Go, Mr Prosecutor!

America's best!

[note: obviously that was Japan's best in the japanese version]

Edgeworth: (She just won't quit...)

Doe: Yes. Since the rain stopped, there was no need for

anyone to wear a raincoat.

And I am more of an umbrella person myself.

Kay: I'm definately a raincoat person. Umbrellas inhibit

your movement too much! [note: 'I like to have my hands free' may sound more natural]

Hayami: Well, I use neither a raincoat nor an umbrella.

Even in rain or snow, I've always got my trusty parka!

Edgeworth: (This isn't what we were talking about...)

And the owner has an injury on their left side.)

Doe: ……….

Edgeworth: Mr Doe, I shall reveal your true colours for all to see.

REBUTTAL

[there's a little bit extra bit on this one. I haven't quite got some of the lines, though.]

Gumshoe: There are several ways you could lose an

umbrella in the panic, pal.

Edgeworth: Incidently, [sorry, still working on the rest]

Gumshoe: Oh yeah...

So there wasn't a way.

[advance to end of conversation]

Edgeworth: All we know is, the assasin's left arm is injured.

[Doe bleeds]

Edgeworth: Mr Doe has an injury.

One that causes his left arm to bleed.

Gumshoe: Really suspicious!

Edgeworth: (The problem is, how to link this fact to Mr Doe.

I should use the R button to have a good look as the evidence.)

Present Red Raincoat at statement 2

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: Mr Doe. You appear to be very cautious.

However, today has gone differently. Because you left 'this' behind.

Doe: You must be mistaken. That does not belong to me.

Or... do you have any evidence it is mine?

Edgeworth: Mr Doe. Is your arm injury alright?

It seems the wound has opened.

Doe: No, it's somehow......

Not much, trouble.

Edgeworth: It looks very serious. My deepest sympathies.

You wouldn't have opened it up while running, would you?

Doe: Whatever do you mean?

Edgeworth: There is no mistaking that the one who

wore this raincoat was injured.

And I can prove that person was you.

With this...!

Doe: .........

Edgeworth:… no matter how long you refuse to speak, your true nature will soon come to light.

Doe: ..........

Edgeworth: (He's not even shaken...?)

Doe: That cannot be the case.

Haven't you realised?

Indeede, the raincoat is mine.

Gumshoe: He's confessing! Arrest him! Arrest him!

Doe: However, that does not mean I shot the president.

Gumshoe: What's that, pal?!

Doe: Prosecutor Edgeworth, sir.

All you've proven is that I wore the raincoat.

What exactly about that is a crime?

WITNESS TESTIMONY

John Doe’s Testimony, part 2

1: I am no assasin. I'm just a simple ice cream salesman.

2: I wore the red raincoat as I listened to the speech.

3: The bodyguards took action immidiately. They were obviously startled by the gunshot.

3.1: The man on the left of the stage acted exeptionally quickly. I'm certain it was Gai Tojiro.

4: The audience all startes to run, it was a state of panic.

Doe: Now, are you convinced?

Kay: It's getting even longer! Amazingly suspicious!

Doe: .........

Kay: A, amazing, but bad! We've got evidence!

Look, here, this guy in the red raincoat!

That's gotta be the assasin!

Doe: ...I see.

That is certainly not me.

Kay: Whaaaaaa!

Doe: Mr Prosecutor, sir.

Please consider carefully.

Could the person wearing the raincoat only be me?

Edgeworth: (It should really be none other than him.

But, why?

This man does seem very sure of himself.)

REBUTTAL

Press Statement 1

Edgeworth: You say you sell ice cream, but I find that hard to believe.

...about making ice cream...

Doe: Certainly. Ask me anything you wish.

Edgeworth: .......

(D, damn it! I don't know anything about ice cream!)

Hm. So, uh, that is to say...

What's the most important thing in making ice cream.

Kay: E, edgeworth...

Doe: The most important thing in making ice cream is, duty.

Edgeworth: Your duty... in making ice cream?

Doe: Without that, ice cream is nothing but sweetened water.

Do you understand?

I am simply an ice cream salesman.

Press 2

Edgeworth: Why did you use a raincoat without an umbrella?

Doe: What's so strange about wearing a raincoat on a rainy day?

Edgeworth: Purposely wearing a raincoat you can't get your arm certainly is strange.

Doe: If both my hands were occupied, I couldn't serve ice cream.

Edgeworth: But why didn't you testify to that effect earlier!

Doe: I'm terribly sorry.

I must have forgotten.

After all, that thing happened.

Edgeworth: That thing...?

Doe: Of course, the president being shot at.

Press 3

Edgeworth: After the gunshot, the bodyguards started to run

rather quickly, wouldn't you think?

Doe: Yes. The bodyguards certainly took action quickly.

Especially the one on the left side of the stage.

Edgeworth: You certainly observed well.

Doe: ...I have good eyes.

Edgeworth: (The names are written on the upper left of the security plan)

The bodyguard on the left side would be... Tojiro, right.

Doe: That is correct. A Mr Gai Tojiro, isn't it?

Perhaps he noticed the laser?

That man is no simpleton.

Edgeworth: (From their movements, I don't believe the bodyguard is an amatur.

This man is also no simpleton.)

What you said just now, could you add that to your testimony.

Doe: Certainly...

[statement 3.1 added to testimony]

Press 3.1

Edgeworth: The one on the left of the stage acted faster?

Doe: In just an instant.

His response was superb.

Have I told you his name is Gai Tojiro.?

Edgeworth: I see...

He covered quite a wide area.

Doe: This is so.

[i think there's a bit more to this]

[Press 4]

Edgeworth: You didn't run yourself?

Doe: That's not the case.

Kay: Mmmmmm! Then what were you doing.

Doe: Suddenly, I hered a 'bang'! near my wound.

I was in pain, it felt like a spark in my eyes.

Kay: But... in reality, it wasn't a spark.

Edgeworth: ...Sparks don't come out of people's eyes.

[note: Okaaay, I'm not sure this works literally. I think he's trying to remind her it's a metaphor.]

[Advance to the end]

Edgeworth: The assasin was the person wearing the red raincoat.

That's clear from the photo.

However...

Kay: Mr Doe says that person wasn't him.

Gumshoe: That's just a story he came up with, pal!

Prosecutor Edgeworth! Peel off this guy's disguise!

Edgeworth: But unmasking this man's lies has only began.

Kay: Right! And to do that, let's ask for more details.

Present Security Plan at Statement 3.1

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: It seems you aren't 'just a simple ice cream salesman' after all.

Doe: You overestimate, Prosecutor Edgeworth.

Edgeworth: If you are just an ice cream man...

Then how do you know the name of one of the president's bodyguards!

[cornered theme]

Doe: The bodyguard's name?

Surely you jest.

Didn't you tell me the names just a moment ago?

Naito and Tojiro...right?

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: Here is a paper detailing security plans.

We discovered the bodyguards names through this.

But I'd like you to look it over carefully.

Here, their surnames are written.

Doe: !

Edgeworth: But you distinctly said Gai Tojiro.

How do you know his full name when we don't?

Doe: ..........

Gumshoe: This is clearly odd, pal!

Edgeworth: Now! Explain to us how you know this name!

Doe: ...That was a slip of the tounge.

Kay: I's true, this man is the assasin!

Doe: Young lady. You're being a little hasty.

I know that name. The reason is simple.

Edgeworth: (What?)

Doe: I, am an aquaintance of Tojiro's.

Edgeworth: What did you say!

Doe: He and I have, a small connection.

I certainly wouldn't forget his name. [note: his ice cream is steaming, i.e. 'angry' here...]

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth! He's just telling a convenient lie!

Doe: This is no lie.

I am just a simple ice cream salesman.

And an aquaintance of Gai Tojiro.

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: That, is something we must here from Tojiro himself.

Wether or not he's an aqaintance of a dubious ice cream man.

Doe: Feel free to.

However, that may be difficult now.

He is involved with the president's security, after all.

In that line of work, even I am not Tojiro's aquaintance.

So, have I explained why I didn't fire the gun?

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: If you aren't the assasin, then why did you testify to wearing the raincoat?

Doe: I was a little hot. And I did say it rained.

My injury still isn't good.

Is there a problem with that?

[note: he's implying he covered his injury with the raincoat, to prevent the wound being exposed]

Edgeworth: (Gh... I can't keep up with this!)

[cut back to audience view]

Payne: Prosecutor Edgeworth!

What are you doing?!

Hurry up and arrest him!

That man's so suspicious, I'd even arrest him myself!

Edgeworth: (Arrest him without evidence? I can't just do that!)

Kay: Darn it Edgeworth!

Just do something!

[note: Kay actually used くそー! here, something I think is... a little extreme for her.]

Hayami: Right now! If the prosecutor doesn't pursue the criminal,

they'll get away.

Doe: Sigh. Their already treating me like a criminal. I understand.

Sunce I've been suspected this far, I'll have to tell the truth.

Edgeworth: The truth?

(This man, what is he up to?)

Doe: I saw... one more person wearing a red hood...

Edgeworth: W...

Gumshoe: What did you saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!

Doe: Oh, that's the person in this photo.

I noticed it earlier, before the speech, when the rain was still falling.

The same colour as my raincoat, glaringly visible.

From their hand, the light of a laser pointer, aimed squarely at the president.

Edgeworth: (It can't be...! There was another person wearing a red hood?)

Doe: Up till now, you have been mistaking the red raincoat wearer for the assasin.

Thinking this, I removed my raincoat.

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: You witnessed the assasin wearing the same colour

hood as yours?

Hm. Wouldn't that be a lucky coincidence?

Doe: That is what I wished to tell you, but up until now I

haven't had a chance to explain.

Both yourself and the security are sceptical,

they wouldn't believe me...

At the moment of the incident, the assasin was very close

to that Sir Prosecutor...

Edgeworth: Prosecutor? I only arrived after the incident...

Doe: Prosecutor Edgeworth, sir, I did not mean you.

I meant that prosecutor, there.

Payne: Eh? M, me?

Doe: Yes. You should be visible in that photo.

[shows Kay's photo 1]

Doe: Here. The red hooded person is right before your eyes.

Payne: y, yeah, that’s me but…

What’s your point?

Edgeworth: (This man, what’s he aiming for?)

Doe: I am simply making an observation about the state of your investigation.

And, I noticed something odd.

Edgeworth: Something odd?

Doe: Yes. I noticed a contradiction.

Edgeworth: A contradiction…?

Kay: In this photo are the chief, Prosecutor Payne, and the assassin, right…

So, what’s strange about that!

Doe: Allow me to explain.

This is actually the middle of the President’s speech.

I believe you have evidence that contradicts this state.

Edgeworth: (Evidence that contradicts the state of this photo.

Do I have something like that?)

[present Hayami’s Tape]

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: It can’t be…!

(There’s a contradiction between the photo and the tape!)

Doe: It seems you’ve noticed it.

Kay: Edgeworth!

What does he mean?

Edgeworth: There is someone who should be in this photo, but isn’t.

Kay: Eh? W, who’s that?

Doe: Right… excellent words.

Someone who should be there, isn’t.

Edgeworth: The person who must be in this photo is…

[present Hayami Mikiko]

TAKE THAT!

Kay: eh?

Gumshoe: H, hayami?

Hayami: …………

Kay: Why would you say that?

Edgeworth: Prosecutor Payne’s voice was recorded on Hayami’s tape.

The Chief Prosecutor too, whispering in a very quiet voice.

[flashback]

Hayami: There were some guests standing right in front of me.

Sounded like two middle-aged men.

They spoke in a veeeeeeeery quiet voice.

Edgeworth: So, it seems Hayami was near Mr Payne when she listened to the speech.

Kay: Ah! But Hayami isn’t anywhere in this photo!

Doe: That is correct.

…Now, Prosecutor Edgeworth, sir.

Who is the one you should be chasing?

Edgeworth: (Ngh…!)

Edgeworth: Mikiko Hayami. Could we listen to what you have to say?

Hayami: …What’s with this strange feeling now?

It’s fine. It’s not like it’s anything shady.

WITNESS TESTIMONY:

Hayami’s Testimony

Statement 1: I was constantly moving while I was recording.

Statement 2: The audience was shuffling around here, there, all over the place.

Statement 3: This photo must have been taken at a different time to my tape.

Statement 4: So, stop glaring at me like that, it’s not what you think.

Edgeworth: (Hayami’s tape recorded a conversation between those men…

Prosecutor Payne and the Chief Prosecutor.)

Kay: But, Hayami would never lie!

But… if that’s the case…

Gumshoe: It would mean the assassin in Mikiko Hayami, pal!

Hayami: That’s just a bad joke.

I’d never do something like that.

Edgeworth: However, there is a contradiction in your testimony.

Hayami: Eh, really…

I don’t think so…

Edgeworth: (It seems I must show this contradiction with evidence…)

Press 1:

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: You were in motion while recording…

Why was that?

Hayami: Y, yeah?

Why, did you say…?

Edgeworth: It is best to remain still while recording a speech.

Hayami: Th, that’s…

Since this is top news, it’s important to maintain a presence? [experience real scene]

To convey every breath of the crime scene in print…

That’s it! That was my scheme!

Edgeworth: If you recorded while running, I believe it would just pick up a lot of noise. [rough]

Hayami: A, anyway, as I was saying!

Press 2:

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Here and there…

For example, what side exactly?

Hayami: When I said ‘here and there’…

It just means generally ‘here and there’.

Because the spectators were so crowded, I can’t remember any little thing! [individually]

Edgeworth: Do you remember anything regarding wether you were on the left or right?

Hayami: T, the… left…

Edgeworth: (The people in this photo were on the left.

So, this would be natural, right?)

Press 3:

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: So, you’re saying it’s natural you weren’t in this photo?

Hayami: That’s right!

Yeah, the prosecutor’s voice on that tape was from when I was close…

But this photo must have been taken when I was far away, no doubt.

If you think about it, whaaaaaaaat’s wrong with that?

Edgeworth: The tape and the photo both captured different points in the president’s speech, you say?

Hayami: Exactly! No matter what tool you use, it depends upon timing.

Edgeworth: (In that case, what if both times were simultaneous…

That one stroke would cause this girl’s entire testimony to collapse)

Press 4:

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Glaring? [lit. scary face] My manner of addressing others is not meant to come off as intimidating.

Hayami: But, showing a little restraint would be good.

When you furrow your brow like that, it becomes a face like that.

No matter what you do, the most important thing is a smile!

Don’t you think so?

Edgeworth: Chasing someone who attacked a president is not the occasion for a smile.

Hayami: …You should smile and make an impression like a spring breeze.

Edgeworth: (Once, [something about a real scary face and being careful. Need another look at this. I'm really not sure if it's meant to be an Engarde refference. Scared the hell out of me, anyway.])

Advance to end

Kay: Hayami seems kinda dumbfounded, doesn’t she.

But she just doesn’t seem like the kind of person to tell bad lies.

Edgeworth: I agree about her not being a person with bad intentions but…

(If that’s the case, there must be something bad they’re worried about.

Anyhow, Hayami’s actions were recorded on the tape.

I must have evidence that makes light of this…!)

[present Hayami’s Tape at Statement 3]

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: Hayami. Reporters must not lie.

Hayami: I, I’m not lyin’.

That’s natural for a journalist!

Edgeworth: However, there’s no mistaking the fact that this photo and the tape were taken at the same time.

Hayami: Why would you say something like that?

Edgeworth: The truth… lies in this photo.

It depicts the exact moment you recorded!

The point that captured the moment of Hayami’s recording is…?

[present the President’s raided arm]

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: Do you see it? The president raising his fist high into the sky?

Hayami: …So what?

Edgeworth: Hayami, could we listen to your tape one more time?

Hayami: Ah! N, no good! I can’t let you listen to it that easily!

Edgeworth: Would you rather we forcibly seize it?

Hayami: Uh… M, mr Prosecutor, I’m no match. [?]

Edgeworth: The problem here is…when during the speech did he raise his fist?

[tape plays]

"No matter how huge the criminal organisation, I will not allow its existence!"

Hayami: "The president raises his fist to the sky!

The exitement in here is reaching its peak!"

Gumshoe: Ah! She clearly said he raised his fist!

Edgeworth: This tape was recorded the moment the president shook his fist.

Kay: But, that means!

The fact that Hayami’s not in this photo is really strange!

Edgeworth: Exactly. That girl is here.

Right in this photo!

The person wearing the red hood, [points]

Was you, Mikiko Hayami!!

Hayami: Kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Gumshoe: You’re the real assassin, aren’t you!

Hayami: Y, yyyyyyyyou’re wrong!

I…. I!

I wasn’t wearing that read raincoat!

Edgeworth: Right. This problematic raincoat belongs to

-John Doe

-Mikiko Hayami

-Neither of them

[select John Doe]

Edgeworth: The raincoat’s owner is John Doe. That much has been proven.

You, were wearing something different entirely.

A red hood…

Gumshoe: Th, then that would mean there were two red hooded people, pal!

Edgeworth: That would coincide with Mr Doe’s earlier testimony.

Kay: But, has another red raincoat been found?

Edgeworth: What Mr Doe saw was a red hood, not a red raincoat.

By the way, Miss Hayami, that parka…

Hayami: Eh? Aah, Back when I said I wasn’t worried about it getting dirty?

It’s reversible, so I can just turn in inside out………AAAAH!

Edgeworth: (As I though.)

Kay: E, Edgeworth! The inside of her parka is…red!

Edgeworth: Indeed. At the outbreak of the incident, she was using that side.

Gumshoe: What did you say?!

What do you mean by this, pal! [to Hayami]

Hayami: I, it’s not what you think!

Today, that side was…

Edgeworth: But, would you let us investigate it?

Hayami: W, what do you expect to find out?!

Edgeworth: We already know it was raining just before the president’s speech.

Didn’t you say just a moment ago…

[flashback]

Hayami: I use neither a raincoat nor an umbrella.

Even in rain or snow, I’ve always got my trusty parka!

[end flashback]

Edgeworth: If you really didn’t turn your parka inside-out…

The inside must be dry!

Hayami: w, wait a minute. I haven’t even had a chance to take off my backpack today, and it's really heavy!

I, I’m sorry but… could we do this another time?

Gumshoe: You think you can fool Edgeworth with that, pal!?

Hayami: uh…..

Uuu…….uuuuuuuu………..

Gumshoe: So, how’s that, pal!

If we’re really wrong, take of your parka! [? Paraphrased a little.]

Hayami: I… it wasn’t me.

I didn’t try to kill the president.

Edgeworth: Miss Hayami. If that’s what you’re saying, I’d like you to co-operate with us.

Could you tell us why you wore a parka that’s red on the inside?

Hayami: I, I’m sorry, Mr Prosecutor.

I… had my reasons.

I’ll tell you everything so…

Please stop bullying me…

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: W, who was that? That voice?

???: Hold on a minute.

It’s a little too early for the endgame.

[A yellow haired bodyguard walks in]

???: Mr Prosecutor. Yeah, you.

Haven’t you already interfered with affairs too much?

Edgeworth: (This is one of the men from Kay’s photos…)

???: Oops, sorry, I should probably introduce myself.

My name is…

[twirls gun a lot]

Naito: Manousuke Naito, the President’s Bodyguard.

Entrusted sub-leader.

Kay: Kyaah!

Gumshoe: What do you think you’re doing, pal!

That’s dangerous!

Naito: Oops, sorry. This baby’s not something to mess around with. [note: コイツ is more like 'this guy', but he explicitly reffers to it as female later so... While we're on the subject of Naito, he uses very rough masculin colloquial language. The kind you hear Yakuza (or just really tough, intimidating guys) use in darama or anime. He was a lot of fun to translate for.]

Edgeworth: How is it you have a gun when you’re not a police officer.

Naito: They call it the lady of Zheng Fa.

Issued only to the President’s bodyguards.

Noooooow then, I’ve got two things I need to tell you guys. [lit. I have 2 news, but that doesn't really work so well in english]

I’ve got good news and bad news. Which do you wanna hear first?

Edgeworth: Either is fine. Whichever suits you.

Naito: You sure?

You’re just lettin’ me have the first move?

Riiiight. I get it.

My first move will be my pawn.

Edgeworth: …It seem you enjoy chess.

Naito: What, you too? Mr Red-Suited Prosecutor.

Edgeworth: It’s Edgeworth.

And I do have a taste for it, yes.

Naito: Right, 'Master' Edgeworth. [He uses ダンナ here, an old term meaning 'master of the house' or something. But I think it's meant to soud sarcastic in this context.]

I’ll just get to the good news.

The president’s safe. Not even a scratch on him.

Gumshoe: Really!

Thank goodness for that, pal!

Doe: It seems that young lady was not a murderer after all.

Kay: Good for you, Hayami!

Hayami: B, but, I…

Naito: Oops, forgot somethin’.

There’s still the bad news.

The president was unharmed due to the protection of me and the other bodyguards.

No… I had nothin’ to do with it. The one who saved him was the Leader.

He gave his life…

Edgeworth: That, would be the other Bodyguard, Tojiro, was it?

Naito: Yeah, that’s it. Tojiro’s dead.

Died protecting the President…

Edgeworth: !

Gumshoe: What did you saaaaaaaaaaaaay?!

Doe: Is that right… Tojiro really died?

That’s terrible.

Kay: T…that means, Hayami…

Naito: That Lady did it. To my bro. [兄弟、lit. sibling. But he means it in the sense of 'fellow co-worker']

Hayami: T, that’s! Not true!

I’m, not a murderer…!

Naito: Sorry.

Ms Natural Murderer. [note: a bit awkward. I'd personally go with something like "Little Miss Murderer"]

Hayami: !

Naito: Exactly. You know, in order to protect our ‘King’, we need to make ‘sacrifices’.

It was an incredibly bad move, this ‘castling’…

Gumshoe: What’s all this about, pal?

Sacrifices? Castling?

Edgeworth: They’re just chess terms.

He’s saying Tojiro was substituted for the President.

Gumshoe: This guy talks strange!

Edgeworth: Manosuke Naito, was it?

Naito: Eh? Whatd’ya want?

Edgeworth: I’d like to examine the victim’s body, immediately.

If possibly, I’d like to question the President too…

Naito: Such a shame but… I can’t let you do that.

Edgeworth: What… was that?

Naito: There’s a third thing. And this one’s the worst news, for you.

Edgeworth: (There was more than just the good and bad news…?)

Naito: From here on, the investigation of the case, and its suspect, will be handed over to the Zheng Fa Police.

Edgeworth: What!

Gumshoe: W, what do you mean?

Edgeworth: This case’s investigation authority is ours!

I will not allow this oppression! [note: or tyranny, despotism. Woah, getting a little extreme here]

Naito: You, Prosecutor Edgeworth, was it?

The President knows about you solving the Yatagarasu Case.

Edgeworth: I am honoured.

Naito: Plus, the Chief Prosecutor nominated you to be in charge of this case.

Edgeworth: (It seems the Chief Prosecutor make a small appeal to the President.)

Naito: But!...

It looks like we made a grave mistake in the selection.

Don’t you get it?

You’ll have to leave now.

…This is the president’s intention. If you opposed it, do you know what’d happen?

I’d bet it’d be a national incident.

Edgeworth: Ngh…

[back to outside]

Naito: Hey, lady, there!

Get over here!

We’ll continue questioning you in the President’s plane.

Hayami: N….No………

I… I didn’t do nothin’!

Naito: Hey, don’t be unreasonable. [lit. unobedient]

Zheng Fa’s laws can be pretty scary.

Hayami: Mr Prosecutor! Please…

Please, help me!

Edgeworth: Hayami?

(There’s no mistaking that Hayami was wearing the ‘Red Hood’

However, that doesn’t mean the whole truth has been revealed.)

Hayami: I really didn’t do anything. Please believe me…

[everything but Hayami, Naito and Edgeworth fades to black]

Edgeworth: (Can I accept this…?

Such a conclusion…

Trembling, with eyes full of fear [panic], that girl begged me to help her.

Clearly not the actions of someone who committed a heinous crime…!

At this rate, the truth will disappear into darkness…!)

Gyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!!

Kay: Eh!

Gumshoe: Wha..!

Edgeworth: What!

Naito: W, what the, you…!

[fade in to De Killer, holding knife to Naito’s neck]

Doe: …Be quiet. What you just said was frightfully rude. [?]

Your neck injury has yet to heal, have you not forgotten?

Naito: N, not you, at a time like this…!

Doe: It seems you remember.

Gumshoe: Hey, you! What’re you doing!

Cut it out, pal!

You’ve got some nerve to do that right in front of a detective and a prosecutor!

Naito: S, stop! Stay out of this!

This foe’s beyond any of you! [note: lol, unintentional reffence, so I left it. Could also be something along the lines of "this isn’t someone you guys can take on"]

Kay: Mr Doe… who on earth are you?

Doe: I am not merely an ice cream salesman.

Naito: H, he’s, a professional assassin.

And his name is…

Shelly De Killer…

Edgeworth: (Did he just say Shelly De Killer!)

There’s no-one in the legal profession who doesn’t know the name De Killer.

An assassin who’ll dependably carry out any request.

I was once involved in a case of his devising.

De Killer: It’s been a while, Prosecutor Edgeworth.

Although this is our first time meeting face-to-face… [note: Yes, this is true. In 2-4, Edgeworth only talked to him over the radio]

Edgeworth: The real assassin was you all along…!

De Killer: This is correct. I received a request from a curious personage.

To target the president…

[A remark on that line...]

WARNING WARNING THE FOLLOWING SPOILER TAG CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE END OF CASE 5!!!!!!! UNLESS YOU'VE PLAYED THAT FAR, DO NOT READ!!!!!!!!!

The term he uses for 'curious' is... Saru. As in monkey. And monkey as in... YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!! So while it may seem innocent when translated, it's actually a MASSIVE foreshadowing. As in, it can also be read "I recieved a request from a person named 'Saru'." A first time player won't pick this up though.

Edgeworth: (I must have seen his face in investigation files…

Damn…!

I was careless…)

De Killer: I’m glad I was able to conceal this knife within my bandage as I entered the park.

Although it seems my calculations were a little off.

Edgeworth: (A knife? Not a gun?)

De Killer: Now, Mr Naito, sir. Shall we began that game you are so fond of?

Of course, your life depends on it.

Naito: …And, your demand is?

De Killer: …There will only be one with investigative authority.

Prosecutor Edgeworth.

Edgeworth: (Investigative authority…?)

Naito: W, what’s your plan?

De Killer: I am asking you to allow Edgeworth to continue his investigation.

Kay: Huh?

Why are you doing this?

De Killer: Tojiro was very much connected to me. [fate, インネン]

I would like to discover the truth of his death.

When that man died, the investigative authority was already moved. I’m only asking you to give it back to that prosecutor.

With your life at stake, this really isn’t the time to be stubborn.

Naito: Why you… you’d use the investigation to get close to the president…!

De Killer: And what of that?

Surely, for the sake of the investigation…

It is necessary that we enter the President’s plane.

Naito: As bodyguard leader, I can’t allow that!

De Killer: Oh? I could have sworn you said you were ‘sub-leader’. [note: spiced up a little, but the connotation is the same]

Naito: Now that Tojiro’s gone, I’m the leader!

De Killer: I don’t know whether you’re more capable than Tojiro was…

Naito: What’re you saying!

I’ve still become leader!

De Killer: So it would seem. In that case, please use leader-like judgement.

Lose your life needlessly here,

Or else allow the investigation to continue.

Naito: Gah…!

Edgeworth: (Use the investigation? It doesn’t seem necessary to do this purposely.

This man, just what is he thinking?)

De Killer: No objections, Prosecutor Edgeworth? [note: it's not actually igiari here, but it still a kind of deliberate pun]

Let us continue with the investigation.

Edgeworth: …………..

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth!

W, what’ll we do?

Edgeworth: For now, we have no choice but to accept his proposal.

At least we’ll be able to continue the investigation.

But…

Listen well, Detective.

[fade]

Edgeworth: …I’ll use this investigation to buy time.

In the meantime, gather the police.

Surround the plane so this man can’t escape…!

Gumshoe: Right! Got it, pal!

To be continued…

Edgeworth: Just as the bodyguard Tojiro died, Shelly De Killer appeared.

A new development in this case has come to light.

Under Naito’s direction, we entered the president’s plane…

Firstly, the emergency personnel attending to Tojiro left.

After that, one by one, we set foot inside the plane…

Same Day, 4:15 PM

Zheng Fa President’s Plane

De Killer: Oh. Where would the President be?

Naito: Who knows…

De Killer: It seems he’d be on the opposite side of that door.

Still a coward, I see.

Naito: You think he’d just show himself in front of a hitman?

Hahahaha!

Not a chance!

De Killer: ……..I told you, didn’t I?

My purpose here is simply to investigate the case.

Well then, Prosecutor Edgeworth. We await your examination of the body.

Edgeworth: Right…

(For now, I have no choice but to obey and continue the investigation.

The rest is up to Detective Gumshoe… I’m counting on you!)

Edgeworth: The attempted assassination of the president became the murder of a bodyguard…

Kay: Heheheheh…

It looks like you could use some help, Edgeworth.

Edgeworth: Hm. It doesn't look like I can refuse...

Kay: Exactly, Exactly!

There’s no way you could do that!

This looks like a job for the great thief Kay Faraday! [somewhat paraphrased. lit. "this is the true character of the great thief Kay Faraday" but I think this is the implication]

Edgeworth: …Right. So, are you saying you can solve this case?

Kay: I didn't say I'd solve it!

Edgeworth: (She really asserted that strongly…)

Kay: I’ll stick to being the cute support!

Ok, let’s get right to the investigation!

Edgeworth: (We need time for the police to prepare.

I must prolong this investigation as much as possible…

Zheng Fa President’s Plane

INVESTIGATION BEGIN

[investigate Tojiro’s body]

Edgeworth: I won’t rest until I’ve investigated every suspicious nook and cranny.

[examine bullet wound]

Edgeworth: His armpit has been penetrated by a bullet

Logic Panel: Penetrating Bullet

Text: The bullet that hit the victim went straight through.

Where could it have gone?

[random clarification, whenever you see the term 'penetrated', it means, more specifically, that the bullet went straight through the victim's body and came out the other side.]

Edgeworth: By some misfortune, he was hit in an area his bulletproof vest didn’t cover…

Kay: It really seems like the shot was fired without aiming. [?]

Edgeworth: The cause of death was most likely blood loss.

The bleeding has stopped but…

[body Observations jotted down in organiser]

Text: Cause of Death: Blood loss from a bullet in the shoulder.

The bullet penetrated his body.

Kay: Emergency personnel were called to treat Tojiro, right?

Edgeworth: I’m afraid they were too late…

[examine Tojiro’s gun]

Edgeworth: It seems the victim also carried a gun.

Kay: Why would he need to shoot someone?

Edgeworth: Presumably to return fire at an attacker.

(We need to check if the gun has fired any bullets)

…Hm. It’s still fully loaded.

There’s no evidence of any shots being fired.

This pistol would also be a Zheng Fa model, right?

Naito: Ah, yeah.

Us guys were always issued the same model of gun.

Logic Panel: Tojiro’s Pistol

Text: Hasn’t fired a single shot.

Manufactured in Zheng Fa.

A six-shot rapid fire pistol.

[edit: Okay, yeah, that detail before did turn out to be important, I'll edit it]

[examine suitcase]

Edgeworth: This is, a bullet-proof attaché case.

It's a tool the bodyguards use to protect their body from bullets.

It can be seen in Kay’s photo.

(It seems Tojiro and Naito both used one.)

[bullet-proof Attaché Case jotted down in organiser]

Text: A tool to protect the body from bullets. Both Tojiro and Naito possessed one.

[okay, the following exchange was a play on words in Japanese, but, VERY luckily, it had a close English equivilant. Basically, Kay used the verb "to steal" in the context of taking a photo. Fortunately, we have a similar expression...]

Kay: Ah! That’s the scene I stole on film!

Edgeworth: …You didn't do anything illegal in taking this.

Kay: Anywhere, anytime, I’m always in the mood for stealing.

Edgeworth: You just wanted to use the word ”Steal”, didn’t you?

Kay: Hehehe. Have I been caught?

[examine security monitors]

Edgeworth: There are monitors surveying the inside and outside of the plane.

Edgeworth: I won’t rest until I’ve investigated every suspicious nook and cranny.

[examine weird stuffed toy, if you think of the monitors as a grid, it's the 1st cell on the second row]

Edgeworth: What’s this, this…thing?

Naito: Oops! That’s the President’s precious stuffed animal.

I don’t really get it but, it’s some kind of keepsake. Don’t touch it!

Edgeworth: Precious?

That’s unusually…

Kay: It looks as if the shelf’s been forcibly broken into.

Edgeworth: (Indeed, the area it stands on does look a little unnatural.

Hm? Underneath the stuffed toy, there’s a shard of glass

This unnatural empty space… Perhaps…

There was once another monitor here?)

[surveillance Camera Monitors jotted down in organiser]

Text: Streaming surveillance images of the plane and the surrounding area.

One monitor is missing.

[Optional: examine lower monitors:]

[to be added]

[examine desk]

Edgeworth: I won’t rest until I’ve investigated every suspicious nook and cranny.

[examine documents]

Edgeworth: These are, some kind of official documents?

Kay: I know it’s a bit rude but, could we pleeeease see what’s inside!

Edgeworth: Mm. This looks like data on security plans.

Kay: Ah! This looks similar to the one you found in the trash back then?

Edgeworth: So it seems.

(But… what’s this?

Something seems out of place…)

[examine anywhere]

Edgeworth: It’s certainly a very sketchy drawing…

Kay: Err, this… seems like a document on security plans.

Edgeworth: If so, we obtained something like this earlier.

[other diagram shown]

Edgeworth: Hm? It seems there’s something different about the other document.

What on earth is it…

(Maybe I should try the deduce button?)

[Note: Don't worry, you don't need to read the written notes in order to find this contradiction. It's just a simple case of 'spot the difference'. It's easier to see if you view the other document in the conversation above.

[Deduce: Either Rook or Knight symbol, present other security plan. (The Rook and Knight have swapped places)]

EUREKA!

Edgeworth: What’s this…

The details of the security plan, changed?

Kay: Eh? …Aah!

You’re right!

Naito: Yeah. That’s it.

There was an alteration yesterday.

President’s orders…

Edgeworth: Why make such a drastic change?

Naito: Because… two days ago, this same De Killer attacked the President.

That guy disguised himself as a bodyguard.

Tojiro was the first one to figure it out.

He rushed to the president’s side.

Just in the knick of time, Tojiro managed to stop him.

He grabbed that guy’s arm, and twisted it!

Then, he fired one bullet, square into his left arm!

Kay: So Naito, what happened to you back then?

Naito: Ah, that…

De Killer: If I remember correctly, the first one to fall to me that day was, you…

Kay: Huh? That's awful! [lit. "It sounded like you said a terrible thing". This seems the best way to interpret it, it's just a shock reaction]

Naito: ………Shut it!

Edgeworth: (So, back then…)

[flashback]

Doe: Your neck injury has yet to heal, have you not forgotten?

Naito: N, not you, at a time like this…!

[end flashback]

Naito: Since that day, I haven’t been able to turn my neck right.

It’s the worst.

De Killer: To think you actually succumbed to an injury of mine…

Gai Tojiro… he said you were of exceeding quality.

…He must have been mistaken.

Naito: Pah! What’s so different about me and Tojiro…

De Killer: I believe you’re as different as a Pawn and a Queen.

Naito: WHAT!

Edgeworth: So, you remembered Tojiro’s name because he was the superior man?

De Killer: Correct. While disguised as a bodyguard I happened to hear his name.

There was no way I could forget it.

After all, there are very few people who have succeeded in injuring me.

Edgeworth: (So, this is the ‘connection’ he mentioned before…)

Naito: The security arrangements were changed…

So there was no possibility of an assassin infiltrating our ranks.

Only the president’s two most trusted men would accompany him on the stage.

In short, me an Tojiro.

[security Plan updated in Organizer]

Text: Shows the deployment of the bodyguards.

Was altered yesterday.

Touch ‘check’ for details.

Edgeworth: It appears the place you were standing also changed.

Kay: That’s true!

He’s now on the right!

Naito: That’s cos I can’t turn my head right.

The position of guarding the President’s left…

I mean, they changed it so I faced the right of the stage.

Logic Panel: Where Naito was Standing

Text: Since he can’t turn his head right,

plans were altered so he stood on the right of the stage.

[Examine Bulletproof Vest]

Kay: Wow, that’s one heeeeavy vest.

The president’s cloths must be made from some strange fabric!

Edgeworth: …Right.

It’s to protect against bullets.

Kay: Wow! It even does that!

Edgeworth: Naturally.

This is a bullet proof vest after all.

Logic Panel: Bulletproof Vest

Text: Found on top of the desk.

One bullet is embedded in it.

Was this the president’s?

Kay: Ah! So that’s what it is!

This is the first time I’ve seen one!

You could’ve said something before!

That really surprised me!

[optional: examine lion figure]

[to be added]

Logic: Link Tojiro’s Pistol – 6 Shot Pistol

Edgeworth: (These two guns…

They’re actually both the same model

Pistols manufactured in Zheng Fa…)

[Murder Weapon: Gun updated in Organiser]

Text: Discovered in the garbage on the left of the stage.

Has fired two shots.

Same model as the victim’s.

Kay: Looks like the Bodyguards all use guns made in Zheng Fa.

Edgeworth: Indeed.

Kay: Aren’t those guns rare?

Edgeworth: No. Even more than that.

Getting one into this country is nearly impossible.

Kay: What! It doesn’t seem like much of a treasure.

Edgeworth: Yeah… that’s… a shame.

Kay: Wha! Edgeworth, you're talking about treasure?

Edgeworth: That’s not it…

It’s just that, since it’s rare, It will be easy to identify.

Even evidence can become “treasures”.

Kay: I get it! Even during your investigation, you search for treasure.

Edgeworth: Well, I didn’t quite say that.

Kay: Okay! Let’s investigate!

Where’s the treasure?

Edgeworth: (And suddenly she’s motivated.)

Logic: Bullet Proof Vest – Penetrating Bullet

Edgeworth: Two bullets were fired, we know that from the number of gunshots.

The first hit the Steel Samurai Balloon, and the second stole Tojiro’s life.

Kay: But, didn’t a bullet hit the president’s bulletproof vest?

Edgeworth: Right. That doesn’t match up with the number of shots…

However, there is one way this can be solved.

Kay: One way?

Edgeworth: The bullet that stole Tojiro’s life passed through his body, and then hit the vest.

In other words, we should presume the bullets that hit the president and Tojiro were one and the same.

Kay: I see!

Naito: …That’s right. It’d be dangerous without a bulletproof vest.

Edgeworth: Is the president alright?

Even while wearing a bulletproof vest, it’s still possible to be injured.

Naito: Yeah, the bullet’s impact could still fracture your bones.

But, no need to worry.

The President’s trained himself like no other! [method of discipline is unparalleled or something. Basically, really fit is the implication.]

Kay: Maybe the President didn’t even need a bulletproof vest!

Edgeworth: (I think that would be overdoing it.)

I’d like to examine the bullet.

There’s a chance there may still be rifling markings.

Kay: Rifling markings?

…What’s that?

[And here come the mandatory explaination. How many games has that been now?]

Edgeworth: Rifling markings are always left on a bullet. Those markings differ between guns.

By examining the markings, we can determine which gun fired the bullet.

It’s almost like a gun’s fingerprint.

Kay: I got it now!

Let’s investigate right away!

Naito: I think that’d be difficult.

The moment it hit the vest, the bullet was utterly flattened.

There’s no way you could investigate the rifling markings.

Kay: Whaa! So we can’t investigate it.

[bulletproof Vest updated in Organiser]

Text: Hit by the bullet that penetrated the victim.

The bullet was flattened by the impact.

[After doing all the above]

De Killer: …Now then. I am growing tired of this investigation.

Edgeworth: (Ngh…

Still no sign of Gumshoe…!)

De Killer: Prosecutor Edgeworth, have you also grown tired of pursuing the truth?

Edgeworth: No, not yet.

De Killer: Is that so?

In that case, how do you plan to gather more information from the those connected to this case?

[note: 関係者 normally means "authorities" or "officials", but here it makes more sense to treat it literally as "connected people"]

Edgeworth: Connected…?

Kay: T, that’s!

De Killer: Isn’t there one more vital witness…

On the other side of that door.

Edgeworth: (Of course, the President himself!)

De Killer: Well Prosecutor Edgeworth. Would you do the honour of summoning the witness?

Naito: As if I’d let you do that!

Summon the president in front of your eyes, hah!

De Killer: …………

Mr President. You’re probably watching this through the security camera.

Would you kindly favour us with your presence?

…If you value your bodyguard’s life…

Naito: Gah…

…………

………

…………

…………

De Killer: ……Ah, I understand.

President, what kind of person are you…

Naito: P, President!

Come on! C, cut it out!

Calm down!

Edgeworth: (Still nothing! Come on, Detective Gumshoe!)

[lights go out]

Kay: Kyaaaah!

Edgeworth: (What…! The lights!)

De Killer: Sorry Prosecutor Edgeworth, but it would be best not to do anything careless.

It was difficult to approach the president

Even through Naito’s life…

Naito: s, stop it!

Guh!

Kay: Kya!

Edgeworth: Kay!

…How dare you..!

De Killer: However, I have also discovered the truth.

Edgeworth: (Where… where is he……?)

Edgeworth: Ugh!

[De Killer stands at the door of the plane]

De Killer: I leave the rest in your hands, Mr Edgeworth…

………p………

…Procecutor…!

Edgeworth: (D, Detective Gumshoe…?)

Gumshoe: Prosecutor! Prosecutor Edgeworth!

Thatks everyone, seriously. I'm glad at least someone is taking notice of this.

Oh, and now that I've discovered where Court Records has been hiding, I'll try to get this up there soon. I might wait until I've done all of Case 1 though.

Okay, there's two reasons why I've been away for a little while: firstly, I wanted to get the entire President segment done before I put it up, secondly, now that I have more time on my hands, I've made a video about the isssue:

Please spread this to any AA fans you know.

The vid will also direct you to an alternate Youtube account I've made, though I'll reproduce the link here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/IceCreamHitman

I'll be uploading videos of the game there. I may get around to subtitling them in the future, but not worry if they end up getting taken down. (although I doubt it) I will always be continuing the script translation. In the meantime, you can read along with the script as you watch.

Okay, with that all out of the way...

[Game translation begins here]

Same Day, 4:45 PM

Zheng Fa President’s Plane

Edgeworth: (Did… did I pass out…?)

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth!

Thank goodness you’re safe!

Kay: Edgeworth!

Are you OK?

Edgeworth: Kay! Are you sure you’re alright?

Kay: I woke up just then too.

My head’s throbbing a bit, but it’s no problem!

Edgeworth: Detective Gumshoe! What of De Killer?

Gumshoe: Hayami came running out of the plane…

She told us De Killer made a run for it but,

We were too late, pal…

We heard from that bodyguard,

…the emergency escape lifeboat over there has been stolen.

He would’ve already got to the other side of the lake by now, pal.

Edgeworth: What of the park’s blockade?

Gumshoe: The police were all called back to surround the plane,

right now there wouldn’t be anyone guarding the opposite shore…

Edgeworth: Rgh… that means he was successful in outwitting us.

Gumshoe: Sure seems like it, pal.

Naito: …Mr prosecutor.

Edgeworth: Manosuke Naito…

It seems you too had a narrow escape.

Naito: Yeah, that sure sucked. That bastard!

Gumshoe: Come to think of it…

This was left near where you fell.

Edgeworth: This is… Shelly de Killer’s calling card…

Gumshoe: It looks like it’s a message from him.

[Calling Card jotted down in organiser]

Text: De Killer dropped it as he fled. Embellished with a shell symbol.

[Note: actually, the title just says 'Card', but I thought it needed to be more descriptive]

Edgeworth: He always leaves this card by his victims’ bodies.

Gumshoe: But, Prosecutor Edgeworth, you’re not dead.

Edgeworth: …Perhaps this signifies something similar to a killing.

(Which reminds me, the last thing he said still bothers me.)

[flashback]

De Killer: However, I have also discovered the truth.

I leave the rest in your hands, Mr Edgeworth…

[end flashback]

Edgeworth: (Discovered the truth? What did he mean by that?)

Naito: [on headset] …Yeah. It’s safe now.

Edgeworth: (Hm? What was that?)

Naito: …Now, prepare for the entrance of the President.

Edgeworth: The president?

[President enters]

Ō: ……………

Edgeworth: (This man is the president of Zheng Fa, Teikun Ō!)

Ō: ……You are?

Edgeworth: Pleased to meet you. My name is Miles Edgeworth, I’m a prosecutor.

Ō: I am, Ō.

[A few notes here: one, he announces his name with a BAM! sound effect. Two, he reffers to himself as Watashi, but in Katakana. I think this is meant to signify he has a slight foreign accent. Thirdly, although this porbably isn't important, remember his name literally means 'king', so in introducing himself like this, it kind of has the double meaning 'I am king!', i.e. he's asserting his ultimate authority]

I have heard of your efforts.

You saved my country from a great crisis.

Edgeworth: (Is he referring to the Yatagarasu case…)

I was simply solving this country’s murder cases, nothing more.

[note: This may sound odd if you're not familiar with Japanese politeness conventions. Basically, if someone compliments you, you are obliged to deny it. Otherwise you'll sound boastful. Anyone here who's learning Japanese, remember this.]

Ō: …You’re just being modest.

I observed your investigation just now.

An astounding performance.

…Despite De Killer getting away.

Edgeworth: Thank you, sir. [note: well, I guess since Ō isn't really letting him deny it, this is fine]

(So he was watching through the security camera)

Ō: …However.

I regret that it ends here.

Edgeworth: !

What was that?

Ō: ……………..

Heed my words, foolish prosecutor!

As Naito has already informed you…!

The investigative authority of this case is to be handed to the Zheng Fa police!

Edgeworth: (De Killer’s departure meant they could snatch the investigative authority back?!)

Gumshoe: Hey, you! What’re you doing!

What’s with your attitude, pal!

It’s thanks to De Killer and Edgeworth…

Edgeworth: Enough! Detective!

…President.

I cannot agree to this.

Why is it so necessary you hand the investigation over to your country’s police?

Ō: Why… you say?

I refuse! Lowly Prosecutor! [ok, the word he uses means stunted, short, diminutive. He has a thing for coming up with really weird insults]

You think there’s need for an explanation?

Nay! …I think not! [ The second part of this was literally ‘there’s no need’, but I felt it was a bit to redundant. And besides, Ō is quite clearly being a giant ham here, so this fits. Seriusly, translating his dialogue was a lot of fun.]

You shall hand over all the evidence you’ve found so far,

And leave this plane at once.

Naito: Hey, Mr Prosecutor. Just be a good boy and obey us.

[Well, it's literally: "it’d be best if you obey us", but I liked that line from the demo so much I coundn't resist using it here. I think it fits Naito's character to a T.]

Edgeworth: Ngh…!

(I… can’t resist this any longer…?)

[All evidence given to Naito]

[And yes, if you use the organiser now you'll only have the Prosecutor's Badge]

(Why? Why must this investigation end here?)

Ō: So, you accept our request.

Naito! Place the suspect under firm restraint.

Naito: Gottya Mr President! [note: It's actually Ō sama, but Sir/Lord Ō doesn’t quite work here. This isn't FE.]

Ō: An attempt on my life, the murder of my subordinate.

Such evil! Such a sin!

Hayami: I… I! I never killed anyone!

But…!

Naito: Shut your mouth, lady.

Hayami: U…uuh…..

[Note: Ō's next line autoscrolls]

Ō: You dare question me!

You dare stain this world with deceit!

Should we tolerate this sin?

Nay! Absolutely not!

I can never allow forgiveness!

Because…

[And he can still be seen rambling on in the background during Edgeworth’s next two lines]

Edgeworth: (There’s no mistaking it. The president is hiding something.

I will not let the truth be left behind once again!)

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth!

Kay: Edgeworth!

Isn’t there anything you can do?

Edgeworth: …………..

I remember…

The countless times I was roused from a dilemma in court. [okay, there was a word here that could have meant 'old friend'...]

The witness’ lies.

The defence’s rebuttals. [but judging by this line, I HIGHLY doubt it]

There may not always be evidence to counter…

Nonetheless, I have other methods of extracting the truth from them.

That’s right, words alone are my weapons!

[Logic Chess: Vs Teikun Ō]

Edgeworth: Now then…

Let’s analyse the battlefield immediately.

Ō: You will be gone from this place at once!

This is an order from the president himself! [Knight, Queen]

Edgeworth: (He’s not even listening.

It seems he’ll block any forceful rebuttal.

But if you look beyond that forceful attitude…)

Edgeworth: My opponent is a country’s president.

I don’t think he’ll show weakness easily.

Even if his words are intimidating…

I must not be fooled.

If I observe his behaviour closely I should be able to read his feelings.

Firstly… right.

I’ll ask about his reasons for taking over the investigation.

Right, let’s begin!

A satisfactory move will hit the mark! [?]

LOGIC CHESS;

BEGIN!

Edgeworth: Please, confirm for me again, the investigation…

Ō: I am the president of Zheng Fa.

I will not be talked back to.

Edgeworth: I’m not ‘talking back’.

I am simply asking for clarification.

This investigation will be taken over by your country’s police, right?

Ō: Exactly. I have nothing further to say!

I refrain from unnecessary speech!

Options

[Pawn] You want me to restrain myself?

Wait and see

Select Wait and See

Edgeworth: …………

Ō: Hmph. That’s enough.

This plane is no different to my country’s territory.

You cannot just do as you please.

Edgeworth: (This plane…?

What’s so significant about this place?

I should remember this clue)

[selecting 2nd option]

Edgeworth: I’d like you to explain your reasons for depriving us of

investigative authority.

Ō: Ignorance!

Control yourself!

There is no reason!

That should be enough of an explanation!

Edgeworth: Hmm. Perhaps that clue may be useful here.

Options

[Pawn]Does it have anything to do with this place?

Select top option

Edgeworth: From what has been said so far we can infer…

Your forceful attitude wouldn’t have some connection to this place, would it?

[Pawn hits Knight]

Ō: ……..Hm. You insolent…

Edgeworth: You said just a while ago:

“This is my country’s territory”.

From these words I can deduce the answer.

Namely, that is…

You are trying to apply extraterritoriality rights to this plane.

Am I wrong?

Ō: That’s enough!

Shut your disagreeable mouth!

Options

[Knight]You seem very impatient

Wait and see

Select top option

Edgeworth: You assert that so firmly…

I cannot overlook this.

The moment I mentioned extraterritoriality…

You had an impatient look on your face.

[Knight breaks Knight]

Ō: ………..

You must be bold indeed to say such reckless words.

That’s right. Extraterritoriality.

I wish to apply those laws to this plane.

However!

What does that prove?

None of you can do a thing about it!

You’re powerless! [ The expression he uses literally means "hands and feet tied" or "feeling as if you're handcuffed".]

Edgeworth: I see. So it is indeed extraterritoriality rights you’re after.

That is a bother.

…………..Hmm.

They wish to claim extraterritoriality rights…

I shall attack the lawfulness of this.

[all time restored]

The next move shall decide the outcome.

My opponent who calls themselves president has revealed an opening.

The path should be open!

Options

Does that really apply?

Why are you forcefully hastening this?

[selecting bottom option]

Edgeworth: Your actions here…

seem a bit more forceful than one would expect.

Ō: Who asked for your opinion?

You are to simply obey us!

Options

[Pawn]You expect me to obey you?!

Wait and see

Select ‘Wait and See’

Edgeworth: …………..

Ō: And that “forceful” expression of yours is incorrect.

It is ‘authority’, ‘leadership!’

[note: changed a little, though the meaning is the same. He uses two terms, the first is a kanji term that means ‘leadership’, the second is Riidashipu in katakana. The two are clearly meant to be synonyms in the original, but seeing as they translate to the same thing in English, I had to find another word.]

Edgeworth: So, you arrested Hayami as a result of that ‘leadership’?

Ō: Correct. That girl is a criminal!

No room for any objections!

Options

[Pawn]No, there is a mountain of things I could say here!

[Pawn]You’re right, she is a criminal!

Wait and see

Select ‘Wait and See’

Edgeworth: ……………

Ō: The gun was brought in from outside the plane.

The criminal could be no-one but her!

Edgeworth: (…That’s it!

What if Hayami had brought in the gun from outside the plane?

This should be a vitally important clue.)

[selecting top option]

Edgeworth: Your claim of extraterritoriality,

is it really valid?

Ō: What are you talking about?

Do you even understand youself?

Edgeworth: Certainly. It is just as I said.

Ō: You dare doubt by words…

Have you no shame!

Options

[Pawn]What should I be ashamed of?

[Pawn]The shameful one is you!

Wait and see

select ‘Wait and See’

Ō: Your foolishness is irredeemable.

Your questioning is futile. [ lit. don’t think you can trouble me with these questions]

Edgeworth: Everything is under control.

There’s no need for me to redeem myself.

The only thing I wish to redeem, is the false charges Hayami bears.

Ō: I can tolerate your enthusiasm. However!

Those thoughts are worthless.

The extraterritoriality laws cannot be swayed.

This plane is Zheng Fa territory!

Edgeworth: Hmm… Looks like it’s time to use that clue.

Options

[Pawn]And if the gun came from outside the plane?

Wait and see

Edgeworth: There is absolutely no doubt extraterritoriality laws apply to this plane.

…However!

If we consider the claim that the gun was found “outside the plane”,

Extraterritoriality laws do not apply to areas outside the plane!

Thus, your claim crumbles!

And your holding of Hayami is invalid!

[Queen Breaks]

Ō: Nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh!

What negligence!

How could I be deceived by a mere prosecutor…!

I am Presideeeeeeeeent!

Edgeworth: Hmf. Checkmate.

LOGIC CHESS:

CLEAR

Edgeworth: Mr President… now will you permit us to continue our investigation.

Ō: …Ngh.

I… accept. [reluctantly is the implication. Not sure how to translate that.]

I (reluctantly) approve!

My heart is generous.

My heart is tolerant and merciful.

[the rest auto-scrolls]

So! Because…

………..Assuredly!

And so, we will…

……….If I must!

For a noble cause…

………Gentlemen! Now is the time the

President of Zheng Fa, for the investigation, will…

Kay: This guy sure makes up a lot of excuses.

Edgeworth: Naito. We have the president’s approval.

Could you return our evidence?

Naito: …Tsk.

Big talk.

[Naito returned all evidence]

Kay: We did it, Edgeworth!

Edgeworth: Indeed.

Now we can continue our investigation.

Naito: Heh! How comic. You’re just happy I gave your pieces back!

You've revealed you whole game plan!

Edgeworth: Hm. Study it well.

The plan I’ve hit upon is…

…President. May I ask one more thing of you?

Ō: Hm?

Edgeworth: Could you testify about the moment of the incident?

Ō: …Testify?

Naito: Hey, hey! Hold on a minute!

That’s your next move?!

Isn’t that the kind of thing you do in the courtroom?!

Edgeworth: Naturally, it’s courtroom procedure but, I would like to listen

to what he has to say once more.

However, if you will not cooperate with the investigation of the case here…

You must make your reasons clear.

Naito: Y, yeah…

Edgeworth: Or is there some ‘ugly truth’ hidden here?

Naito: …………

Ō: …Naito. Step back.

I shall accept this good sir Prosecutor’s offer. [He reffers to Edgeworth as 'dono' here]

Edgeworth: I thank you for your cooperation.

Ō: …Heed my words!

WITNESS TESTIMONY

Ō’s Testimony

Statement 1: Where was I when the incident broke out? Ah yes, the stage.

Statement 2: Then! Even as Tojiro and Naito were standing in front of me!

Statement 3: Suddenly! I heard a gunshot, and that round red balloon burst!

Statement 4: And so! Those two attempted to escort me into the plane!

Statement 5: …but then, the second gunshot!

Statement 6: The bullet penetrated Tojiro’s body, and struck my bulletproof vest!

Kay: In that case, the president also becomes the victim.

Edgeworth: It was an attempted assassination. Tojiro just got caught up in it, a little too much.

Kay: But, it’s strange, isn’t it?

Why did the victim disrupt the case?

Edgeworth: Of course, if this becomes official, it will make things hard for us.

Gumshoe: I see! There could be a dark secret to this case, pal!

Edgeworth: (Certainly the President, and perhaps Naito too, know of this ‘secret’.

Without fail, I shall extract it for all to see!)

REBUTTAL

Press Statement 1

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Are you aware of just how serious this incident is?

Ō: You naive man!

I’m perturbed at the very question!

Of course, this is the case of a cowardly shot at me!

When that happened, I was on the stage delivering my speech!

Press Statement 2

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: So it was when the victim was standing that you noticed the gun?

Ō: What was I doing at that time?

Ah, yes! The speech!

Caught up in the enthusiasm of my speech!

What did I notice! Namely, nothing!

Kay: So, in other words… you went all white from nerves?

Ō: Nay! I never forgot a single occurrence during the speech!

Tojiro and Naito were standing in front of me, and still,

I was surprised!

Press Statement 3

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: The red balloon?

Ō: You try my patience, prosecutor!

Edgeworth: That’s not my intention.

I just want to make sure your recollections are reliable.

Ō: Hmph!

In that case, the balloons were arranged on both sides of the stage.

Swelling red in the cloudy sky…

As laid out in the security plan!

Edgeworth: (The security plan…

Ah, the one from the bag…)

Ō: Tojiro stepped in front of me just before the balloon burst!

Press Statement 4

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: “Attempted” to escort you?

What actually happened?

Ō: That’s right, they “attempted”.

Tojiro and Naito raised their attaché cases…

Edgeworth: (Is this the moment shown in Kay’s photo?)

Ō: I had reached the plane…

Press Statement 5

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: And, what happened then?

Ō: You go too far, prosecutor!

If you go as far as this, things cannot function. [?????? REALLY don't know what to make of this one, so I've just got it literally.]

Kay: Oof…!

What’s that supposed to mean?

Ō: To know all is tedious!

But I understand things to a certain degree!

…Even you should know the course the second bullet took!

Press Statement 6

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: When the bullet hit, what condition was the victim in?

Ō: Ohh!

He was truly a man among men!

Still groaning from the bullet’s impact, he grabbed hold of me…

And hastened into the plane!

Edgeworth: So you entered the plane along with the victim?

Ō: I would be protected, Tojiro would guard me!

That, was his role!

[Advance to end]

Gumshoe: He speaks firmly but…

It just seems like he’s evading, pal.

Edgeworth: He’s president, that’s to be expected. [the firm part, not the evading part, he means]

Kay: Uhh…

There doesn’t seem to be anything odd…

Gumshoe: This guy’s also a victim here.

He wouldn’t have a reason to lie, pal.

So, what he’s said should be nothing but the truth….

Edgeworth: On the contrary, there is one point that is discernibly odd.

Try to recall the state of the crime scene.

Kay: Err… That…

Please, show us that document!

Edgeworth: (Should I review it once more?)

Present Steel Samurai Balloon at Statement 3

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: What burst was a red balloon…?

I’m afraid that’s not the case.

Ō: What?

Edgeworth: I’d like you to have a look at this evidence.

Can you see… what has burst?

Ō: Nuoooooooooooh!

Th, this is…!

…….what?

Edgeworth: Hm. It’s the Steel Samurai, Warrior of Neo Olde Tokyo.

You’d do well to remember it.

He always believes in supporting the nation’s people…!

Kay: And don’t forget the rival show, The Jammin’ Ninja!

Edgeworth: The balloon burst by the bullet was a Steel Samurai balloon!

Not merely a “red balloon”!

[lol. I like how, to Edgeworth, that's a contradiction.]

Ō: ………….?

But, the schedule says there should be two red balloons.

It’s also written here in this security document.

Kay: It certainly looks like there’s only round balloons sketched here.

Ō: Naito! What is the meaning of this!

Explain!

Naito: At once, Mr President!

That Steel Samurai balloon was a last minute replacement. [lit ‘borrowed thing we made do with [because of time constraints]’]

Edgeworth: Replacement…?

Naito: That’s what we were informed.

Seems that information didn’t make it to the president.

We ran into a little of 'trouble' during setup last night.

One of the balloons we were preparing burst.

Kay: So, you hurriedly replaced it during preparations?

Naito: Exactly. We just happened to run into a guy manning a stand in the park.

He said he’d lend us the Steel Samurai balloon.

…An excessively good mannered guy. [the word he uses is: 調子のいい, which could have lots of meanings, like 'fit' or 'sporty' as well. I'm still not sure wether this is meant to be De Killer or Larry.]

Edgeworth: (A stand, a Steel Samurai balloon,

a good mannered man…)

Naito: We pumped air into its red hakama, giving us an instant balloon.

[note: Decided to leave that term untranslated, since this is a TV show about samurai we're talking about, It's not hard to seem them doing this in a localisation. That and it's pretty hard to explain what a 'hakama' is without needing another sentencce. Basically, it's those robe-like pants samurai wear. I believe the Veteran trainer class in Pokemon DP wears something similar.]

Edgeworth: So the Steel Samurai looked just like an ordinary, red balloon.

That’s what you mean?

Ō: Naito! How was I not informed of this?!

Naito: Ah! My apologies.

I thought it wasn’t important enough to warrant reporting…

Edgeworth: Couldn’t you tell by looking at it?

Ō: Mmm. I did not notice it.

Edgeworth: (So he mistook the Steel Samurai‘s hakama for an ordinary balloon?)

Was there some reason you mistook it?

Ō: ……..Ooooh!

Edgeworth: (W, what now?)

Ō: Hold on.

I just remembered something…

Actually, I couldn’t really see the balloon.

Edgeworth: You couldn’t see it?

Ō: Exactly.

Back then, the wind was strong.

The flag on the stage was flapping wildly and obscuring my vision.

Edgeworth: The flag?

[cut to stage diagram]

Ō: You know the flags that stood on either side of the stage?

They were flying in the wind.

A wind a little like this…

[flags blowing upwards on diagram]

Edgeworth: (At the time of the incident,

A strong wind was blowing at the crime scene.

The flags were fluttering wildly…

Is there a problem with that?)

-There is a problem

-No problems

Select ‘Problem’

Edgeworth: President Ō, I thank you.

Your testimony has helped uncover a new contradiction.

Ō: A contradiction… you say?

Edgeworth: Yes, on that turns the very foundation of this case on its head…!

(During my investigation, there was no wind at the crime scene, so the flags were still.

However, if the flags really were flying in a strong breeze…

This completely changes the meaning of that piece of evidence…!

The evidence that contradicts the circumstances at the time of the incident is?

Present: Bullet’s Trajectory

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: The gunshot that rang out during the president’s speech,

The bullet was fired at the Steel Samurai balloon…

But also, the national flag shows signs of the bullet’s penetration.

I previously deduced the bullet’s trajectory through these facts.

“The assassin fired the bullet from the left side of the stage…”

However, if the flags were flying like so, my reasoning must change!

Kay: Aahh!

Since the flag’s position changed…

Edgeworth: Correct. The bullet’s trajectory must therefore also change.

Ō: ………….!

Edgeworth: And, if we trace the trajectory of the bullet,

we can tell who fired the shot.

Kay: Eh? But, Edgeworth!

That person is…!

Edgeworth: (Indeed… I still don’t understand why.

However, I know it can be none other than them.)

By tracing the bullet’s path, who was the one who fired the gun?

Present Manousuke Naito

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: The one who shot the balloon…

Was none other than you, Manousuke Naito!

Naito: Wh, WHAT!

Edgeworth: Connect the bullet holes in the balloon and flag.

The line points directly to you!

[bullet’s Trajectory updated in Organiser]

Text: From the path of the bullet, it can be deduced

that Naito fired the shot that burst the balloon.

Gumshoe: But that guy’s one of the president’s bodyguards!

What reason would he have for shooting the balloon, pal?!

Ō: Preposterous! I agree with the detective.

There is no reason.

Are you calling Naito, who saved my life on numerous occasions,

an assassin?!

Naito: Prosecutor Edgeworth, I’ve had it up to here with this!

Our job is to protect the King.

Ō: Naito!

Control yourself!

Naito: S, sorry, my bad.

Ō: Prosecutor, the wind was indeed strong during my speech.

However, the wind’s strength can change quickly.

Evidence! Show us evidence that the flag was blowing at the exact time of the gumshot!

Edgeworth: (The gunshot occurred the moment the president raised his fist to the sky.

The evidence that shows this moment is…

The flag’s state changing is not recorded here)

Present Kay’s Photos

Edgeworth: The evidence, is in this photo.

Ō: Interesting.

And where in this photo, exactly?

Edgeworth: Proof that the flag was flying is in this photo,

is right here!

Present the rightmost edge of the photo, you can see the edge of the flag in the frame.

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: Don’t you see? The hovering flag can be seen in this photo!

Ō: Nu, nuoh…

Edgeworth: There is no mistaking that the flags were

flying at the moment of the incident.

Gumshoe: S, so then. If it really was that guy who shot the balloon…

Kay: That would mean Naito is the assassin!

Edgeworth: Manousuke Naito is…

-The assassin

-Not the assassin

Select ‘not assassin

Edgeworth: Manousuke Naito is…

Not the assassin.

The thing he shot was the balloon.

The balloon is on the opposite side of the president…

So he can’t have been aiming at him.

Naito: An so? Why was it so essential I did that!

Before you answer, remember I’m aiming at your head!

Edgeworth: (Why was it necessary…?

I presume the reason is connected with the one thing

that’s felt out of place until now!

The one who shot the balloon was the bodyguard Naito.

Logic Panel: Naito Shot the Balloon

Text: It can be deduced from the trajectory

that the stage right balloon was shot by Naito

(That fact will change our viewpoint of this entire case!)

[Logic opens]

Link Naito Shot the Balloon with Where Naito was Standing

Edgeworth: (Why was Naito’s position changed?)

[Flashback]

Naito: That’s cos I can’t turn my head right.

The position of guarding the President’s left…

I mean, they changed it so I faced the right of the stage.

[End Flashback]

Edgeworth: (Was this really the only reason?

Suppose the security plans hadn’t changed,

And Naito stood on the left of the stage…

Naito can’t turn his head right…

So could he really have aimed at a balloon on his left?

Perhaps… the security plans were altered so Naito could shoot the balloon?

If that’s the case…

[Flashback]

Edgeworth: What’s this…

The details of the security plan, changed?

Naito: Yeah. That’s it.

There was an alteration yesterday.

President’s orders…

[End Flashback]

Edgeworth: (The security plans were changed on the president’s orders!)

Logic Panel: Change of Security Plans

Text: Ordered by the president himself.

Was the purpose of the change so that Naito could shoot the balloon?

Link Change of Security Plans with Presidential Assassination

[WARNING! MASSIVE SPOILERS BELOW!]

Edgeworth: (In other words, the president knew

about the shooting of the balloon…

He knew about the attempt on his own life!

If you think about it, everything that’s out of place links back to this!

Why was the assassin able to get a gun past such tight security?

Why was the assassin wearing a conspicuous red hood?

Why did they use a laser sight that would so easily reveal their location?

Why was the president composed and unshaken after being shot wearing a bulletproof vest?

This, was the truth the president and his subordinates tried to conceal!)

There is only one reason why Naito fired the gun…!

The whole assassination was a set-up!

Kay: Huh?

Gumshoe: Huh?

Ō: …!

Naito: …How dare you.

Do you seriously understand what you’re saying?

Edgeworth: Of course I understand.

Now, I understand everything…

President, you wished to take investigation rights from me.

That was all so you could conceal the real truth.

Ō: You!

You dare mock me!

Edgeworth: Mock you?

That was not my intention.

I simply used logic to uncover the truth, that is all.

Naito fired the first shot in order to burst the balloon.

Hearing the gunshot, and the sound of the balloon bursting,

the audience flew into a panic.

And then, one more shot…

Kay: Another shot?

Edgeworth: Naito faced the balloon and pulled the trigger a second time.

The second gunshot was also fired by Naito.

This was to create the fact of the second shot hitting the president.

Kay: So what about the bullet that hit the president’s

bulletproof vest?

Edgeworth: What if that bulletproof vest had been prepared in advance?

Ō: Uuuuughhhh!

Kay: What’s the matter, Mr President? Couldn’t you stand another gunshot?

HOLD IT!

Ō: Th, that’s not true!

I was , uh, definatey hit with a bullet...!

Edgeworth: That’s something we could tell by thoroughly examining

the bullet that hit the vest.

Does it really contain Tojiro’s blood?

Ō: Ugh!

But! T, the person in the red hood who shot me

is in that photo…

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: Didn’t you hear me before?

From the bullet’s trajectory, the one who

fired the shot must have been Naito!

Kay: Then, Hayami was…

Edgeworth: She too was part of the plan.

She was to bear the blame, and become the false assassin.

Kay: The red hooded figure!

Edgeworth: Exactly. Hayami was not made aware of how far

her involvement would actually go.

However, she was at least told she wouldn’t

have to fire the gun.

Her role was only to aim the laser sight at the president’s head.

Hayami: T, that’s it! I…

Edgeworth: Amidst the panicking crowd, you would

turn your parka inside out…

And thus, the red hooded figure vanished.

After that, you discarded the gun and security plan in the trash…

And the illusion of the assassin vanishing like a ghost, was complete.

Gumshoe: And because the assassin vanished,

the case would go unsolved, pal!

Edgeworth: Yes, that is what you had hoped.

Kay: But you didn’t count on Edgeworth investigating the case! [paraphrased, but I think that's what she's implying.]

Edgeworth: Exactly. All of this…

Was just the farce of a lying president!

[breakdown]

Ō: …Uh, guh, guh, oo, ooo…

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

[Note: I'll put all breakdowns in spoiler tags, as it's just so satisfying to see them for yourself. But in case you want to know...]

Ō roars so loudly he lets out all the air in his body.

The screen fades, Ō has now lost his muscular appearence and now appears as an overweight, flabby, and ultimately pathetic looking man.

Ō: U…u…Y, you’re wrong.

I, I ,I ,I, I, I

Edgeworth: (…He’s shed his disguise.)

The assassination is a lie, isn’t it?

Ō: Gah… why did the chief have to designate you!

….uuuhhh, this was all… [or something like, 'that this had to happen...', he's just reduced to pathetic whining now.]

OBJECTION!

[And yes, shockingly enough, Naito's Objection is voiced. And it sounds really weird. I'll explain my thoughts on that below.]

Naito: So, you’ve gotten this far.

Mr Prosecutor.

Ō: N,n,n,n,n,n,n, Naito!

Edgeworth: …I am speaking with the president now if you don't mind.

Naito: Knights always strive to protect their King.

Just shut your mouth.

[so it seems this case isn't quite over... next up will be the final part.]

Okay, I thought I should go into this, because I find it pretty interesting:

My thoughts on why Naito has a voiced Objection: (constains spoilers. Only look in the tags if you've played the game)

As you will probebly know, Naito is the second non-lawyer character to have a voiced objection after

Alba

Now, the previous guy clearly thought so highly of himself that he acted as though he had that kind of authority. That and, being the final antagonist pretty much required it. So what about Naito? Sure he's cocky and arrogant, but not to the extent he fells he has legal authority. And he's not a final case villain either. So why him?

Well, for one:

He's a MUCH more important character that we're initially lead to believe. In fact, he has at least an indirect presence in ALL 5 Cases.

He also seems to consider Edgeworth as an opponent in a chess game, though not in a respectful way, he clearly has nothing but contempt for him.

As to why he say it, here's my personal view. His tone in saying it is very different to anything else in the series. [he kinda rolls the 'r' in "Igiarrri"] Judging by this, and his character, I think I have my reason:

He's being bitterly sarcastic.

It fits. He openly mocks Edgeworth often, it seems likely he'd make fun of his legal talk.

I'm not really sure how you'd do that in English though. He stresses one of the sylybals, but we can't have another "Ahb-JYEK-shun!" like

Alba

Hmm...

There is one more non-attorney character with a voiced Objection in this game, but we won't be seeing them for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time coming. I have my opinions on theirs too, but don't look it up yourself unless you want to get MASSIVELY spoiled!

If you already know who they are, you can PM me if you want to hear my thoughts.

WARNING! THIS IS THE LAST PART OF THIS CASE, AND AS SUCH, CONTAINS MASSIVE SPOILERS!

Edgeworth: You… just want me to be quiet?

Kay: T, this guy!

What’s he trying to do?

Naito: Oops, sorry.

That wasn’t necessary.

As my first move, I wanna ask you a question.

You say I fired a gun from atop the stage, right?

The whole audience was watching, how was I not caught?!

Edgeworth: I see…

Right, now it’s my turn.

I say you used something to prevent the spectators from seeing you.

Naito: Something I had…?

Edgeworth: (What did Naito use to prevent

the audience from seeing him?)

Present Attaché Case

TAKE THAT!

Naito: The attaché case…!

Edgeworth: Exactly. I’d like you to have a look

at the photos Kay took.

Your right hand is hidden completely by the case.

This photo captures the exact moment

you secretly fired the gun.

You used the attaché case as a screen!

OBJECTION!

Naito: Hey Prosecutor, you sure like saying things convenient to you. [?]

But, haven’t you noticed?

Edgeworth: Haven’t noticed what?

Naito: Yeah… What you’ve said, it’s all just a hypothesis.

[airquotes] National flags flapping in the wind?

Using the case as a screen?

The security plans were modified cos’ I can’t move my neck?

You’ve got no decisive evidence!

Edgeworth: Ngh..!

Naito: Yeah, I’d be great if you had the bullet that hit the balloon.

Then you could examine it,

and see if the rifling markings matched my gun.

But, right now that bullet’s on the bottom of the lake.

Finding it would be real difficult, don’t you think?

Edgeworth: (I regret it, but it’s as he says.

There’s no decisive evidence…)

Naito: You got it? Then shut your insolent mouth!

HOLD IT!

[view pans to Hayami]

Edgeworth: Hayami…

Hayami: ……………….Ah, umm…

Edgeworth: (That’s it! If she speaks, we could hear new testimony!

Naito: Hey Lady!

You got something to say?

Hayami: Ah, err… never mind.

Naito: Right then.

Edgeworth: Hayami!

Hayami: !

Edgeworth: Have courage!

If you’re afraid, the truth will escape.

You are a reporter…

A journalist, are you not?

Hayami: ………….

I, I

I will NOT remain silent!

Naito: You little…! Don’t you get it?

Use your head before you speak. Bah!

Hayami: I forgot the one principle of getting a scoop.

Journalists must not tell lies…

If you don’t tell the truth, you can’t call it a scoop!

Mr Edgeworth. I’m sorry.

I’ve been hiding this the whole time…

Edgeworth: This is?

Hayami: I used this laser pointer to aim at the president.

That’s all I did…

I never fired a gun!

Naito: Stupid womaaaaaaaaaan!

If you testify, you’ll admit you were an accomplice!

Hayami: I am reporting that to this man!

Three days ago, I was covering an event at the Zheng Fa Embassy.

Just then, I was suddenly called out.

They said if I cooperated, I’d get a special interview with the president.

Edgeworth: And the gun in the trash?

Hayami: I really don’t know.

All I was told…

Was to come wearing a red hood,

and to aim the laser pointer.

I never thought it would become such a huge incident.

I’m really, truly sorry.

Edgeworth: Hayami, thank you.

You gave a testimony detailed enough for the courtroom.

This is sufficient testimony to verify the fake assassination plan.

Naito: Damn you! The lot of you!

You just seemed like a bunch of idiots before!

Edgeworth: Such a shame. If only you had

taken our investigative rights like you planned.

You would have been able to silence this young lady.

Naito: …Gh! [accidently fires, just missing his head]

Kay: So, then…

“Fake Assasination Plan exposed, becomes a murder!”

Is that what you’re saying?

Gumshoe: What kind of horrible person would do that, pal?!

Naito: I, I wouldn’t know…!

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: (The president…?)

Ō: Naito. That’s enough.

We have no choice but to admit it.

Edgeworth: So, president, you’re admitting it?

You planned a fake assassination?

Ō: I, I admit it.

I’m sorry.

Kay: But, why?

Why did you have to do this?

Ō: My approval rating in Zheng Fa has been dropping…

I wanted to be seen as a strong president who could survive an assassination attempt.

But it was foolish.

It was all a lie.

Edgeworth: So, the bullet in that bulletproof vest?

Ō : That was prepared earlier. It was not fired at today.

[President’s Bulletproof Vest updated in organiser]

Text: A prop in the fake assassination attempt.

The bullet dent was prepared earlier.

Kay: But, what about De Killer?

Ō: It seems that, somehow, he got word of our plan.

And so someone who intended to make the fake assassination real appeared.

Edgeworth: (That’s why De Killer wore the red raincoat.

He would impersonate the culprit from the plan,

in order to approach the president.)

Ō: But, there’s still one thing I don’t understand.

Edgeworth: One thing?

Ō: Why was Tojiro’s life taken?

This whole thing was fake, and yet,

his death was real.

Edgeworth: (Yes… why was his life taken?)

Ō: Tojiro was an outstanding bodyguard.

Even though he wasn’t from my country,

he had my utmost trust.

Naito: ……………

Kay: Having that cowardly president’s trust,

is that really such a big deal?

Gumshoe: Hey, that’s kinda like with me and Edgeworth…

Edgeworth: (I wouldn’t say that…)

Did Tojiro know of your plan?

Ō: He wasn’t aware of the exact details.

I asked him to co-operate, and he refused.

Edgeworth: You should have listened to Tojiro’s advice.

Ō: Yes, indeed.

I truly regret his loss….

Naito: …………Pah.

You’re exaggerating a fair bit.

Edgeworth: (? W, what?)

Naito: Didn’t Tojiro only save you that one time?

Ō: Naito……?

That’s…

Naito: And wasn’t it me who cooperated with you?

Unlike that spineless wimp who threw away his responsibility and fled…! [the language he's using conveys utter distain]

Ō: I know, you’re also a valuable bodyguard but…

Naito: From now on, I’m the leader.

That’s all I have to say.

Now that that chicken Tojiro is dead,

my team’s gotta change!

That’s the strategy and tactics of chess! You have to change everything you know!

Ō: I know you always wanted to be leader…

But, what’s with this… this

imprudence now?

Naito: Hehehe. From now on, I’ll show you perfect plans,

just like the one today.

Edgeworth: You have great ambition…

But, wasn’t your ‘perfect plan’ today a failure?

Naito: Aaah, that was all... because of you!

And that idiot Tojiro! It was all his fault! [lit. that was all the fault of you and that idiot tojiro]

Edgeworth: Tojiro’s fault…?

Naito: If he hadn’t gone and died, De Killer wouldn’tve threatened me…

And you would never have set foot in this plane.

Ō: Naito! So you’re saying…

Naito: Yeah, he died protecting the president.

Maybe that was his lifelong ambition.

Edgeworth: (He died protecting the president?)

Kay: Huh? But the assassination was fake…right?

Naito: Hey, hold on!

Weren’t you listening?

Remember the ‘guy who wanted to make the fake assassination real’?

There were two gunshots at the time on the incident.

The first was as you said.

I shot the balloon.

But… The second one wasn’t me.

Edgeworth: What’s that? So then, who fired the second shot?

Naito: The real assassin.

…But, it wasn’t De Killer.

He intended to attack the president with a knife, not a gun.

The lucky winner was the hidden Queen…

The real assassin was that lady right there!

Hayami: Huh?

Gumshoe: You mean Hayami, pal!

Hayami: I, I aint no assassin!

Naito: Really?

I don’t believe you.

The one who threw the gun in the trash…

That was you, wasn’t it?

WITNESS TESTIMONY:

Naito’s Testimony

Statement 1: I shot the balloon, then me and Tojiro excorted the president into the plane.

Statement 2: Tojiro stayed here, while I took the president into the Security Room.

Statement 3: By the time I left the Security Room, Tojiro had already fallen…

Statement 4: That lady’s shot probably hit during our retreat.

Statement 5: That one must’ve been fired from the gun discovered in the trash!

Edgeworth: So, you’re saying you don’t know the exact

time the victim was shot?

Naito: A Knight’s job isn’t to protect a Rook.

We guard the King!

Kay: Ruuwk? [note: Kay spells this in hiragana, indicating she's probably unfamiliar with the word and pronounced it wrong]

Edgeworth: What he’s trying to say, is that his job was to guard only the president.

Naito: It all ends if the King is taken.

That’s like the fundamental rule of Chess.

Edgeworth: But, do you believe letting a piece get taken

from under your nose is a victory?

Naito: Hey, I still won!

Look! Mister Ō is safe!

Edgeworth: Hmf. It’s too early to announce your victory.

The real match begins here, Naito!

REBUTTAL

Press 1

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: So, the victim didn’t take part in the plan?

Naito: Yeah, that’s right.

So he wasn’t aware of the exact details.

Kay: So, you’re saying he thought it was a real assassination and…

Ah. But still, you’d think he’d notice a gun fired right next to him…

Naito: Yeah, you could say that.

Still, even if he thought something looking like an assassination attempt,

was fake…

His role as a piece was to protect where the King stood.

Edgeworth: He’d even make that decision at a moment like that…?

I see. The victim was certainly a superior man.

Naito: He wasn’t like that.

From what I saw before,

Yeah, he couldn’t even act like he was cooperating with me and Ō!

Press 2

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Why do so?

Wasn’t the assassination plan an act?

Naito: Because the guests were in really high spirits.

Wouldn’t it be awkward?

If reports said the president who drove off an assassin,

just sat around drinking grape juice? [note: yes, they say grape juice even in the original Japanese. It's almost certainly a running joke.]

Edgeworth: What was the victim doing at this time?

Naito: Yeah, well… Me and Ō had just entered the Security Room.

Anyhow…

Press 3

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: So, whereabouts had the victim fallen?

Naito: ‘Round about where we’re standing now.

He fell right in centre of this room.

At the time I returned, the plane’s doors were closed.

The bullet must’ve flown into the plane and hit

Tojiro just before they shut.

Ugh, such a troublesome guy.

It’s his fault this plan came to nothing.

Ō: Naito!

That’s far too harsh…

Naito: He protected the King, but he couldn’t protect his honour.

In short, he neglected his professional duty.

There’s no other way about it. [lit. you can’t say it [hon.] like that]

Edgeworth: (A truly despicable man.)

Naito: Considering the situation…

Press 4

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Weren’t you carrying your bulletproof attaché cases?

Naito: Yeah, Tojiro noticed the laser pointer.

The two of us fanned out to shield the President.

Edgeworth: You’re saying the bullet got through a gap in your shield?

Are you claiming Hayami could aim that well?

Naito: Well, firstly, her target was the president.

She wouldn’tve needed that kind of aim.

Edgeworth: So the bullet’s aim was off, and just happened to hit

a tiny gap in his bulletproof case and vest?

Naito: I couldn’t even believe it myself.

But, that’s the truth of it.

Tojiro really hit the jackpot.

And you’ve got the evidence of it.

Press 5

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: The second shot was not your instruction?

Naito: Exactly. That was just that lady’s.

Wasn’t she always hungry for a scoop? [greedy]

Hayami: I’m a journalist!

I wouldn’t forget something like that!

Naito: Well then, who was it?

For your coverage, you were caught up in our plan.

Hayami: Uuh… yeah, that’s…

Naito: It’s as you said.

I created the fake assassination plan.

She was to bring the laser pointer

But… that wasn’t enough for her.

That lady selfishly readied the gun, and fired at the president.

Perhaps if I had continued firing, she wouldn’t have been caught?

[advance to end]

Edgeworth: Naito fired one shot…

And then Hayami fired another…

Kay: In other words, Hayami also brought a gun.

Edgeworth: This is only conjecture. There is no proof.

Kay: Then, BAM! Let’s present evidence!

[Present Murder Weapon: Gun at Statement 5]

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: You shot the balloon, and Hayami shot Tojiro?

Is that really the case?

Naito: I certainly think so.

Edgeworth: The gun we discovered in the trash had fired two shots.

This does not match the number of gunshots!

Naito: !

Edgeworth: And why does it not match?

It’s simple.

This gun is false evidence, left by the real criminal.

Kay: False evidence?

Edgeworth: Think. What was the criminal’s goal in preparing this evidence?

On discovering this gun, you’d think the assassin came from the audience.

And so, it was necessary to make it look like both bullets were fired from this gun.

Kay: That’s right! So this gun was made to look like it fired two shots!

Edgeworth: However, it has been established that the bullet

that burst the balloon was not fired from this gun.

In that case, could it have fired the shot that took Tojiro’s life?

Naito: Hehehe. So, you’ve arrived at this.

You’ve got spirit, I’ll give you that.

But don’t get too up yourself. [Aren’t you all high-and-mighty]

Well, you’ve come this far, just say it.

Edgeworth: I won’t tell you, I’ll show you. [?]

The one who really shot Tojiro is…

Present Manousuke Naito

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: Manousuke Naito!

You murdered Tojiro!

Naito: …Tch. You finally reveal true intentions.

Ō: Naito! Not you!

Edgeworth: De Killer wasn’t the only one who exploited the fake assassination for their own gain.

You intended to murder Tojiro, and claim he was a victim of the assassin!

When the president entered the security room, and the doors of the plane closed,

Only the victim and Naito were left in the room.

And at that moment, you fired a third bullet, aimed at Tojiro…!

OBJECTION!

Naito: A third bullet…?

Ha! Only two gunshots were heard!

The numbers don’t match up!

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: The plane’s walls are soundproofed.

And since the door was closed…

The gunshot would not have been heard outside the plane.

Kay: But, wasn’t the president in the next room?

Edgeworth: (There’s no doubt… the president would have heard that gunshot!)

President Ō! What of this?

Ō: I… didn’t hear a…gunshot.

Edgeworth: But! You would have seen everything that happened

in this room through the security cameras…

Ō: Sometimes, the power source for the cameras in this room gets disconnected.

The power usually comes on when you enter the security room…

Kay: So back then, the power in that room didn’t come on soon enough?

Ō: ……………..No.

Actually… it’s…

Edgeworth: (What is it?

He’s not making this clear…)

President! This is vital!

Ō: ……..I, I, I was,

I, uhh.

Kay: Please!

Ō: I was, hiding under the bed,

And covering my ears…

Kay: Whaa! But, you knew the assassination was fake!

Ō: Still! I hate the sound of guns!

That terrifying sound! I just can’t stand it!

Kay: ………….

Gumshoe: ……………

Hayami: This will not make for a good article. [paraphrased a little]

Edgeworth: …….Ahem.

Naito! You saw the president hiding under the bed!

Naito: …………….

Edgeworth: And so…

You wouldn’t have been seen through the security camera!

In that moment, when the president couldn’t hear the shot…

You could fire the third bullet, to shoot Tojiro!

Ō: Naito! You… really did this?!

You deceived me?

Naito: You really think I killed that dumbass?

That’s awful, President.

Have a little faith in me. Aren’t I the bodyguard who’s saved your life?

Ō: I want to believe you, I really do, but…

Naito: Okay, I get it.

But why did it have to be me? [ lit. But why am I the only suspect]

There’s still the possibility that lady killed him.

Edgeworth: This gun is not the murder weapon.

The number of missing bullets makes that clear.

Naito: Maybe it was one short from the start.

Edgeworth: What?

Naito: Maybe it fired one shot yesterday, or the day before?

And so, today was its second shot.

Which hit Tojiro…

Gumshoe: Now you’re just arguing for the sake of it, pal!

Naito: Just arguing?

There’s still the possibility, you can’t deny that!

Edgeworth: (It’s true, I still can’t deny it completely…!)

Naito: You need decisive evidence!

Decisive evidence that makes my heart thud and shuts my air hole!

You got something like that?

Edgeworth: Gah!

Kay: Edgeworth!

Can’t you do anything?

If this keeps up, Hayami will…!

Hayami: Mr Prosecutor…

It’s true, I was blinded by my scoop and did an awful thing.

But, I never killed anyone.

I could never do such an outrageous thing!

Edgeworth: (Decisive evidence…

Something that can prove the murder weapon was Naito’s gun.

…Proof of the gun?

[flashback]

Naito: Yeah, I’d be great if you had the bullet that hit the balloon.

Then you could examine it,

and see if the rifling markings matched my gun.

[end flashback]

Edgeworth: (What if the bullet that took Tojiro’s life

could be found?

From the rifling markings, we could determine which gun fired the shot!)

Naito: If you’ve got no evidence,

we’re done talking.

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: Wait!

Naito: Wha, WHAT?

You don’t seriously have decisive evidence!

Edgeworth: Hm. Naturally.

Naito: That’s a great joke.

Well, come on, show us!

What is this so-called evidence!

Edgeworth: (The bullet that took Tojiro’s life.

This is the decisive evidence I need…!)

The location of this evidence…

Is…!

-I have it.

-I don’t have it.

Select don’t have it

Edgeworth: It is… not with me.

Naito: Okay! Okay!

Game Over!

Edgeworth: However…

It is somewhere in this room!

Naito: What’s that!

Edgeworth: The bullet that killed Tojiro penetrated his body.

So where did the bullet go?

Some time ago, you explained this yourself.

[flashback]

Edgeworth: The bullet that stole Tojiro’s life passed through his body, and then hit the vest.

Naito: …That’s right. It’d be dangerous without a bulletproof vest.

[end flashback]

Edgeworth: However, now that the fake assassination plan

has come to light,

We know that the bullet in the bulletproof vest was prepared earlier.

So then, where else could the bullet have gone?

Naito: …Interesting. Most interesting.

Care to explain?

Edgeworth: (The bullet that killed Tojiro’s location.

Do I have evidence that indicates this?)

Present Security Moniters

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: In this room, there’s one thing clearly missing.

Naito: Something missing. Oh yeah,

wouldn’t that be your brain!?

Edgeworth: I’d like you to look at these racks of security montiors.

Ō: Ah!

Edgeworth: I thought you’d notice.

Among these images of the plane’s surroundings…

The feed from the right hand side of the plane is missing.

That’s what’s missing.

A single monitor…

Naito: Nrrrgghh…!

Edgeworth: President. There was originally a monitor here, wasn’t there?

Ō: T, that’s right.

Why is my stuffed toy there now…

Edgeworth: That must have been put there to hide the gap

where the monitor used to be.

So where did the monitor go, and why?

Why… undoubtedly, because it was hit by the bullet.

To give the impression the bullet really hit the bulletproof vest…

There would be trouble if another bullet hole was discovered.

Kay: So then, where did the monitor go?

Edgeworth: Where… It must have been hidden somewhere inside this plane.

As hit had been shot, there was no chance to dispose of it outside.

Detective Gumshoe!

Conduct a thorough search of this plane!

Gumshoe: On it, pal!

Naito: President Ō! You said extraterritoriality laws apply to this plane…

Ō: I, I give my approval.

There’s no problem.

I just want to know the truth of Tojiro’s death…

Naito: Damn it! You think this is a joke?!

You’re always like this!

Tojiro this, Tojiro that…!

Edgeworth: Detective. We have his approval.

Go ahead.

Gumshoe: Prosecutor Edgeworth! We foud it, pal!

Edgeworth: Good work, detective.

Now we can extract the bullet from the monitor!

Gumshoe: Riiight, we go in like this, and…

I got it!

Edgeworth: Well, it’s certainly stained with blood.

There’s no denying this is the bullet that killed Tojiro.

[bloody Bullet jotted down in organiser]

Text: Found in a security monitor. Believed to have taken Tojiro’s life.

Edgeworth: This bullet crushes your rebuttal!

The decisive evidence that shuts your air hole, as you say.

If the rifling markings on this bullet don't match the gun in the audience…

This will clear Hayami of suspicion!

Naito: …………..

Edgeworth: What, nothing impudent to say?

Detective. We need to examine the rifling markings.

Send the gun and bullet to forensics.

Gumshoe: Got it! We found clear rifling markings on the bullet.

Edgeworth: And so, let’s listen to the forensic report.

Naito: …………..

Forensics: Report!

Firstly, the blood on this bullet matches the victim’s blood.

Edgeworth: (So, this really is the bullet that took Tojiro’s life.)

Forensics: Also, this gun bears Manousuke Naito’s fingerprints!

Edgeworth: (Naito would’ve got his fingerprints on it

when he took our evidence.

The real issue, is the rifling markings!)

If the markings don’t match…

Hayami will be cleared!)

And the bullet’s rifling markings…

match this gun.

Edgeworth: What!

(They… match?)

Kay: Whaah!

Hayami: N, no way!

Forensics: There’s no mistake.

The bullet was fired from this gun.

Edgeworth: W, whaaaaaaaaaaaat!

Naito: …Hehehehehehe.

Huh? That’s straaaange.

Looks like I was proved right after all.

What, did you think you cornered me?

You must have read the board wrong…

The one who’s cornered here…

Is you!

ARGUEMENT:

Naito’s Reasoning [note: This is the first one so far to be called an 'Argument', rather than a 'Testimony']

Statement 1: There’s no doubt about the rifling markings!

Statement 2: The bullet that killed Tojiro was fired from the gun in the audience.

Statement 3: So who used that gun?

Statement 4: It couldn’tve been me, I was on the stage. So what about that lady in the audience?

Statement 5: It’s clear she’s the assassin that killed Tojiro!

Naito: So, what are you going to do, Prosecutor?

Where did that gun come from?

Which gun was that bullet fired from?

You gotta admit…

It sure aint me!

Edgeworth: Ngh…

(This can’t be…!)

Naito: I admit me and Ō planned the fake assassination.

But now it’s your turn.

You’ve already admitted who the true killer is!

Kay: This doesn’t mean Hayami is a criminal!

Edgeworth: Give it a rest, Kay.

Firstly, we have to listen to his point.

After his argument, feel free.

Kay: ……!

I got it, Edgeworth!

REBUTTAL

[Press 1]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: No, on the contrary…

OBJECTION!

Naito: You got something to say?

Decisive evidence?

Edgeworth: Gah!

Naito: How about you open the air hole on your own reasoning?

Kay: The rifling markings matched, so…

Does that mean Hayami fired the shot?

Edgeworth: I’d like to believe that’s not the case…

Gumshoe: But, can we produce decisive evidence?

Edgeworth: (That’s right.

How to go about this…

If Hayami isn’t the criminal, why do the markings still match.)

Kay: ……….

Edgeworth: What do you think, Kay?

Kay: Hmm…

If it’s impossible to prove…

Then the evidence itself should be suspect, right?

Edgeworth: The evidence itself?

Kay: Hayami’s definitely not a criminal!

So, there should be something off about the evidence against her!

Edgeworth: …You’re really brimming with confidence.

Kay: It’s my Great Thief’s intuition!

Edgeworth: (Intuition…?

It may just be possible.

Above all, Hayami is not the kind of person who’d lie.

Hm. The law is evidence…

Yet I doubt the evidence now.

I still have doubts about…)

-The gun

-The bullet

-Neither

select ‘The gun’

Edgeworth: (If there’s something odd, It’d most likely be the gun.

After all, the bullet was only discovered a few moments ago…

But did Naito have a chance to tamper the gun?

[flashback]

Ō: You shall hand over all the evidence you’ve found so far,

And leave this plane at once.

Naito: Hey, Mr Prosecutor. Just be a good boy and obey us.

Edgeworth: Ngh…!

(I… can’t resist this any longer…?)

[end flashback]

Edgeworth: (That’s it! It’s possible he manipulated the gun then…!

You can’t deny this gun is the real murder weapon.

And it’s owner is…)

Present Manousuke Naito

TAKE THAT!

Edgeworth: (He must have switched them…

…This is Naito’s own gun!)

[Naito’s Gun updated in organiser]

Text: Switched with the gun discovered in the audience.

Matches the bullet’s rifling markings.

[Press 2]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Naito, you…

OBJECTION!

Naito: I’m waiting on you.

You’ve gotta prove this yourself.

Don’t tell me you’re betraying yourself? [?]

Edgeworth: (The bullet is stained with the victim’s blood.

So it’s clear it took the victim’s life.

And the bullet was fired from the gun we found in the audience.)

Naito: All right, all right.

Put your best face on, Mr Prosecutor.

Edgeworth: Gh…

(I can’t back down now!)

Naito: Well, now you understand the reality of things,

time for the next step.

The link between the bullet and gun is clear. So…

[Press 3]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Who…indeed.

Naito: You already know, so what’s the point of explaining?

I know how you’re feeling.

Probably the same way I was before.

So nervous you feel like you could fire a gun!

Edgeworth: ….!

Naito: …Heh. That’s how it is.

You can’t joke about it.

The one who used the gun was certainly…

[Press 4]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: Do you have proof Hayami fired the gun!

Naito: Hey, hey, didn’t the forensics team show that?

Kay: But they didn’t find Hayami’s prints on the gun!

Gumshoe: And we know they found YOUR fingerprints, pal!

OBJECTION!

Naito: Didn’t I hold onto all the evidence before?

So, if that lady isn’t the killer than who is?

The fact is, the one chasing down an assassin in the crowd was you.

Edgeworth: Gah…!

Naito: Don’t you get it?

No matter how you look at it…

[Press 5]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: I don’t remember that being proven!

Naito: Well, what have you proved?

Oh, yeah. You proved I fired the first bullet

But you’re forgetting one important thing.

What did you come here to do?

Gumshoe: That’s obvious!

We came to arrest the villain!

Naito: Is the one who worsened Zheng Fa relations the villain you’re looking for?

No, your objective was the villain who attempted an assassination.

Edgeworth: I’m the one who decides my goal, not you.

Naito: If you just argue like this the case is gonna go unsolved.

Even you should realise it. The real killer is that lady.

Edgeworth: (No, the true killer is none other than you!)

[Advance to end]

Edgeworth: (The rifling markings match the gun discovered in the audience.

Was there an opportunity for Naito to come into contact with the gun…

It couldn’t have been before he took the evidence.

Kay: Edgeworth…

Is it hopeless?

Edgeworth: …There’s no errors in his reasoning.

However, this is an obstacle we must overcome.

A testimony that betrays the truth must always contain a contradiction.

Firstly, I should ask Naito for more details.

Present Naito’s Gun at Statement 2. You'll need to press Statement 1 and select 'The Gun' to get it updated first.

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: Naito! You switched the guns!

The gun that matched the rifling markings was yours all along!

Naito: ……….Oh really?

You’ve made an interesting move there.

Edgeworth: The switch took place when you seized the evidence.

At the time we were disputing investigation rights with the president.

He detached the laser sight from the gun found in the audience…

And attached it to his gun!

And then, he handed the evidence back to us…!

Naito: Heheheh.

I did all that?

So you’re saying I knew you’d want to examine the rifling markings?

Edgeworth: Indeed. Always think ahead of your opponent.

Isn’t that the fundamental principle of chess?

Naito: You’re sure glad. But, aren’t you overestimating me?

And moreover… can you prove I switched the guns?

ARGUEMENT:

Naito’s Reasoning, pt 2

Statement 1: Yeah, that guns’s the same model as mine. What’re the chances…

Statement 2: BUT. Have a good look. See, no laser sight.

Statement 3: And check the number of bullets. It seems it’s fired two shots.

Statement 4: What evidence is there that I switched the guns?

Edgeworth: Overestimate?

Would you really say such a thing.

Naito: I’m just being completely modest, like you.

Wouldn’t you do that in from to a chess board?

Edgeworth: Hm…

But this is not a chess board.

Naito: A shame, but I can’t allow you to make that excuse.

“I can’t lose. You don’t have enough evidence.”

Edgeworth: You seem to have made excuses up in advance.

“I won’t lose at chess. I only need to find evidence.”

REBUTTAL

[Press 1]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: A “chance”, you say?

Naito: Yeah, maybe, it was inevitable.

Gumshoe: Make up your mind!

Naito: We bodyguards needed it to reliably defend our King.

And that lady was a total amateur with guns.

She would’ve also needed a revolver.

Kay: A revolver… isn’t that just like the gun Naito carries?

Why was that so essential…?

Edgeworth: Perhaps… because its simple structure makes it easy to handle. [note: not certain]

Naito: Whether it’s a job you can’t fail, or a job you’re not used to,

there’s no better tool.

So, I’d say the truth is, they “just happen to be the same”.

[Press 2]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: You detached the laser sight yourself!

Naito: Well then, show me some evidence.

Edgeworth: H, hmm… that is…

Naito: Without evidence, you can’t handle people’s lies…

Didn’t your dad teach you that?

Of course, I’ve got evidence backing up my point.

[Press 3]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: There’s something that’s been bothering me just now…

What about the magazine in your gun?

Naito: My baby?

…Now that you mention it.

[twirls]

I fired it some time ago.

[reloads]

Edgeworth: (Hm? Every time he fires, he reloads the gun…?)

Naito: Didn’t you confirm what happened at the time of the incident?

Edgeworth: (That’s it! When he switched the guns, he would’ve replaced the bullets!

Naito is barehanded. When he switched the guns, he wouldn’t

have had an opportunity to put on gloves…

Naito: Well, looks like it’s about time to forfeit.

How about it, Edgeworth.

[Press 4]

HOLD IT!

Edgeworth: If there was evi

OBJECTION!

Naito: There is none.

If there is, then show it.

Gumshoe: We know there is!

Right, Prosecutor Edgeworth!

Edgeworth: (There’s no time for another investigation.

If there is evidence, it must be something we have now.

Think, have we considered all the possibilities…!

Naito: Heheheheh…

If you’ve got something to show, show it.

[advance to end]

Kay: Proof that Naito switched the guns,

Is there something like that…

Edgeworth: There’s no evidence that directly shows Naito switched the guns…

However, we know it to be a fact.

Gumshoe: If he didn’t, then how do you explain the rifling markings, pal.

Edgeworth: I should carefully consider the meaning of each

piece of evidence linked to this testimony.

The truth is always there!

Present Naito’s Gun at Statement 4

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: The proof… is here!

Naito: That’s your proof?

Prosecutor Edgeworth. You know it’s no use.

Edgeworth: There are traces on this gun.

And they show this gun in yours!

Naito: Well, show us!

What piece have you got there?

A Rook? Bishop?

Don’t tell me it’s only a Pawn!

Edgeworth: The traces that show this gun belongs to Naito are…

-Fingerprints

-Rifling Markings

-Blood

Select “Fingerprints”

Edgeworth: On this gun, are your fingerprints.

OBJECTION!

Naito: Fingerprints! Heh!

Didn’t we establish that was natural?!

I held onto that gun, of course my fingerprints would be on it!

OBJECTION!

Edgeworth: If all you did was hold onto the gun,

aren’t there some places your fingerprints shouldn’t be?

Naito: WHAT!

Are there really places like that?!

Edgeworth: …Allow me to show you.

By all rights, the place your fingerprints shouldn’t be is…

This evidence will deal the final blow to your King!

Select bullet chamber

Edgeworth: Here, Detective Gumshoe.

Have a good look at the magazine.

Gumshoe: It’s fired two shots. But…

Where would the fingerprints be?

Select the bullets

Edgeworth: When you held onto our evidence, you switched the guns.

But if that was all you did, you’d soon be found out.

Naturally, since the two guns had fired a different number of bullets.

Gumshoe: The gun found in the audience had fired two shots, pal!

Kay: So, what about Naito’s gun?

Edgeworth: On the stage, he faced the balloon and let off two shots.

And afterwards, the one shot that killed Tojiro…

A total of three shots/… That many bullets were fired.

So, afterwards, you replaced the bullets!

At that time, were you wearing gloves?

Naito: Ngggh!

Edgeworth: Officer! In your forensic report earlier,

where were Naito’s fingerprints found?

Forensics: Roger!

Not only were they on the outside of the gun…

But they were even discovered on the bullets!

Edgeworth: If all you did was hold onto the evidence,

why are your fingerprints on the bullets?

Naito: Gah! …Th, that’s…

Edgeworth: Thus, it is proven.

You switched the guns.

The gun that fired the bullet that took the life of the victim…

Was yours, Manousuke Naito!

It was you who took the life of Tojiro…

You are the true assassin!

Naito: …I, I, I!

Edgeworth: …Checkmate.

[breakdown]

Naito: U…u…u…

UUUWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Naito spins his gun even more wildly than before, tossing it into the air multiple times. Immediately a horseshoe, The Thinker, a Blue Badger doll, Mr iFly, a box of Samurai Dogs and a hammer [presumably dislodged from the overhead baggage compartment] fall on his head in that order, before his gun finally falls back down and knocks him out. Consequently, this makes Naito the only person to be struck by The Thinker and survive.

Naito: I… I should’ve been made leader!

Tojiro! That little…!

If it wasn’t for him…!

I would’ve had complete control of everyone!

My assassination plan was perfect…

Edgeworth: …………

Detective Gumshoe.

Gumshoe: …Got it.

[Gumshoe walks over to Naito]

Naito: Edgewooooooorth!

The game isn’t over yet!

I… I…

Edgeworth: …That’s enough.

This game will continue in the courtroom.

Naito: N, nrrgggghhhh…

Damn you! Damn…you!

[Gumshoe leads Naito away]

Same Day, 5:12 PM

Gourd Lake: Floating Stage

Ō: I must thank you.

You exposed a murderer among my bodyguards.

Edgeworth: (Now that we’ve left the plane,

he’s gone back to his kinglike persona.)

Ō: … Back when I proposed the fake assassination…

Naito: You want me, not Tojiro?

Ō: Tojiro declined… so I’m asking you.

Naito: ………….

I understand. Let’s do it.

I’ve got a perfect plan.

But I might be able to use that guy as a piece…

Ō: The moment he said that, his eyes were brimming with hatred for Tojiro.

I was honestly anxious about asking him and not Tojiro.

Now that I think about it, he probably sensed

that anxiety in my face.

Perhaps that gave him the impetus for the murder.

Edgeworth: President. It was still you who came up with

the fake assassination plan.

That, is your crime.

…A crime that will not go away.

Ō: Indeed, you are correct.

My apologies.

In some way, I must take responsibility for this.

However, I still thank you.

Thank you for solving the mystery of Tojiro’s death.

I am only scheduled to stay in this

country a little while longer.

If any of you wish to visit Zheng Fa, you will always be welcome.

[President leaves]

Hayami: Really, truly, thank you!

Kay: I’m really glad for you!

Edgeworth: You have been cleared of false charges of murder.

However, it’s still a fact that you were connected

to the fake assassination.

You will need to submit to police questioning later.

There’s the possibility you may be charged with some crime.

Hayami: Yeah, I’m really sorry about that…

Edgeworth: I know you’re after a scoop,

but you shouldn’t go this far.

Hayami: I know…

I’ll really try to reflect on this.

Kay: We did it, Edgeworth!

[Haven't quite got the second sentence, somthething about open arms]

“Prosecutor Solves President’s Attempted Assassination!”

This’ll be front-page news!

Hayami: F, front-page news…!

M, Mr Prosecutor! Could you give us your thoughts

on the resolution of the case?

Edgeworth: (She certainly changed her attitude quickly…)

Hayami: You’re so cruel!

Edgeworth: Because… the case is not over yet.

Gumshoe: Not over?

What do you mean, pal?

Edgeworth: What shows that this case isn’t over?

Present De Killer’s Calling Card

TAKE THAT!

Kay: De Killer’s card…

Edgeworth: De Killer’s request was not carried out.

Gumshoe: Assassinating the president…?

Edgeworth: (I’m glad this didn’t grow into an even more serious incident.)

[fade]

”Attempted Assassination of the President”

This case already made news all over the country.

It was even reported in the media that I would

be preparing for Naito’s trail.

Everyone had heard about the case in the news,

everyone was talking about it.

However, among the hysteria, there was one thing no-one noticed.

The game had only just begun…

Case 1: Turnabout Target

End

Now that the whole thing's done, I'll update the first post with a full list of evidence, as a reference for anyone playing the game.
