Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Marvelous just told Eurogamer Rune Factory 4's European release has been cancelled (full story here).

For some reason, I feel cheated, even though I'm not a follower of the series. I can't imagine what European fans are thinking now except f*** region locking.

Ouch that sucks, first SMT 4 isn't out there yet and now this gets canned. A shame too, considering the game is pretty fun. So who will European fans blame, The developers for going bankrupt, Marvellous via misblaming or Nintendo becauseā€¦ Nintendo?

Can't be as bad as when Index went bankrupt and Sony fans started talking about Sony buying the company to get a Fire Emblem on the PSVita. But probably all three is the answer, plus others.

Yeah, region-locking sucks. What's worse is that it didn't even exist previously. I know, because I'm able to play a Taiwanese copy of Zelda: Minish Cap on my American DS. Good thing it has an English language option too.

Funny enough, there are 3DS games that are not region locked. PokƩmon X and Y are two really good examples of this.

By region lock do you mean "has a lot languages you're able to select when starting regardless if it's Japanese, North American, or European?" Because I doubt Nintendo would not make a 3DS game region free even if it is their own game.

It didn't exist on Nintendo's handhelds except 3DS. (DS, GBA, GBC ... etc)

It was always there on their home consoles. (Wii U, Wii, GameCube, N64, SNES, NES)

that's what you get for being a bunch of freedom-hating commie socialist not-americans :p

This sucks. I don't care about Rune Factory, and I don't live in Europe, but this is ridiculous. C'mon Nintendo, it's the f***ing 21st century. Either cut region locking, be prepared and willing to localize every game, or don't be upset when fans hack your systems to give themselves features that you for some reason won't.

PokƩmon X and Y aren't region locked... per say.

This is what happens when I put my English copy on my Japanese 3DS.

...But you can't start it.

As in it's still region locked. The 3DS just recognizes it as the same game.

Well shit. Still this proves that it certainly has the capability of being playable on foreign 3DS, it's just the stupid practice is getting in the way.

Ugh I always hate it when Europe gets screwed again. Its lessened a bit these last few years, but there are still too many games that either make us wait for months or don't get a release here at all.

Its a shame since I was actually a little curious about rune factory.

Yes, same with the Wii U (And previously the Wii); they could do a small firmware update to remove region-locking. (Most Wii games supports both PAL60 & NTSC when softmodded)

It's fully capable.

The Gateway 3DS piracy flash card proves that.

It loads it through the same menu, a 1:1 copy of the game. And it's not region locked.

Oh yeah, you're right. I just remembered that my brothers couldn't play a German copy of an N64 game on our American N64.

Unless you want to completely brick your 3DS, STAY AWAY FROM THE GATEWAY CARD.

Gaah I want to screeam or punch something... if Region locking had a face... well it wouldn't anymore! Grrr.. okay venting over... but seriously does this mean it will never ever be localized... will I have to get a NA 3ds just to play this game now.... sigh... guess it will still be awhile till I ever get to play this game.... this makes me sad... oh well

I'm hoping there's a breakthrough in breaking the 3DS's region locking for casuals like us.

That or there's a miracle and Nintendo decides to abandon region locking in a bid to improve declining global sales yeah, right..

Maybe the next gen handheld console (which hopefully lets us play 3ds games as well) will remove region locking so we can play whatever games we like! Please Nintendo....
