Bors
I've heard its odd compared to the other FE games. Anything significant I should know about this game before I start?

Tryhard
http://serenesforest.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=50383 The post by BrightBow here should give you a basic overview. Otherwise, not really unless you want to know the answer to specific questions.
lonelyVoxel
Come in to Gaiden with a bit of a Final Fantasy mindset, since it's almost like a crossover between the two. It's more like standard Jrpg's overall. Here are a few things to keep in mind. You can only have one thing in your inventory at once, and by default you have nothing equipped, meaning your STR is your attack. This means no Vulneraries. However, weapons never break. Magic costs Hp to cast. All units, save Celica, can only wield one type of weapon. Sorry Cavaliers, no swords! To promote, you have to fight through a room of enemies before you get to the special promotion statue. Same thing with statboosters, which will be in the same room as the statue. You get quite a few revives, so don't be worried if you lose one guy later on in the game. This should be enough to get you going. Feel free to PM me if you need anything specific. sirmola
Actusly alm can equip either swords or bows post promotion (he can still use the weapon type that he does not have equipped, but atk=str) Also, instead of adding to your stats like in other games, promotion sets all stats that are below class bases to those values, but does not touch those above class bases (the closest analog is weapon ranks in POR). Also, do not move alm into the last mountin range in his path untill celecia has advaced as far as possible. Also, you probably want to play easy mode. Robert Stewart
All units, save Celica, can only wield one type of weapon. Sorry Cavaliers, no swords! This is not true. Anyone in the Priest class can use spells and swords. Edited February 8, 2015 by #RR shinpichu
