Fire Emblem: The Queen's Lament Demo

CopyBotJ is currently hacking his way through the next arc of the story, which by the end of it will mark the 1/4th to 1/3rd mark of the game! Several bits of re-balancing based on feedback we've received have also gone into the game, so that everyone is more usable and/or not so broken. I'm not quite sure when the next patch will be released, but do not fear; we're still hard at work making this whole thing come together!

Don't know why I didn't notice this hack until now XD

Good stuff my friend! I especially love the boss of chapter 3! It's the most adrenaline-filled boss I've face in a while! Rokevin is also a refreshing twist from other FE lords. Eagerly awaiting more updates! Though if I were you I'd fix those mugs a little...

[spoiler=Question]Who is Sally in Chapter 3? Is she meant to be a recruitable character in the future?

But seriously, later patches should be more obvious that you would be best off keeping Sally alive. Also, which portraits are in the most need of fixing? Our artists and spriters are quite obsessive with their craft and will happily take any constructive criticism!

You have to keep Sally alive? What is different if you do?

Many of them, really. Bromios really bugs me in particular because he looks like that boss's head painted purple and mounted on a fighter's body (same goes for Steph). Beatrice needs a few touches in terms of shading in her hair and that cloth on her hair, Cid is waaayy too young to fight. It's painfully obvious which mugs you guys used in order to create these splices, which is something all spriters should try to avoid. However, I love Rokevin, Maxime, Elizabeth and Celeste's mugs!

Of course! We've just been delayed by school, work, and Fates. Also we don't check on Serenes much. But we're working through, slowly but steadily! Thanks for the concern!

Also I'm posting this the day before April Fools so you know it's legit.

Hey everyone,

We’ve been silent for a while now and you probably thought we were all dead, but surprise, we've actually been working hard on the project! The original demo had 6 chapters, but this one goes all the way up to Chapter 11. We’ve tweaked many aspects of the original chapters, too, added everything from new mechanics to new characters, so look forward to that.

In the brand new chapters, you’ll get further into the plot, following protagonist Prince Rokevin in his journeys and misfortunes. This time, you will also spend a few chapters playing from the perspective of Rokevin's best friend Augustus, as he searches for secrets that may spell the end of both of their kingdoms. Also in this demo, we’ve included a new race of beast units similar to those found in FE9, 10, 13, and 14. There are both playable and enemy beast races which we have named the ‘Vakar’.

However, during these past couple of years the team has experienced some difficulty in its development process. Thus we must say the project will be on hiatus until further notice.

Because of this, we decided to go out on a bang, so make sure to play the demo until the end!

ALSO, the Readme is outdated. Please ignore it.

Thank you, and enjoy.

New Release

Hi I played through the current patch and I'm here to give my feedback. I can sum up my experience with one image:

The_Queens_Lament_11.png

Now then, you'll find the real review in the spoiler tag below.

Spoiler

I'll cover Rokevin's side first and then hit Augustus's.

The character balance feels a lot like Radiant Dawn Part 1: its rapid enemy curve means a character's viability depends on whether or not their first few levels are good. A few characters such as Isolde can coast off their bases or unique utility for a bit, but if you don't pick up levels at some point then goodbye. Bromios and Steph got impressive levels early on and became the main workhorses aside from Maxim; meanwhile Elizabeth and Celeste hung on awhile by their uniqueness but I benched them at the boat chapter. You may want to look at characters from Theo and beyond and consider buffing them. Rokevin was surprisingly strong early on due to the Rapier but he's falling off himself; his Speed has been good but his poor Defense is catching up to him. He lives by the Rapier at this point.

None of this applies to prepromotes though, they've all been incredibly strong, with Maxim being an unstoppable force for the first few chapters and Jericho being an unstoppable force period. I have to give you credit for map design though, since it stops them from soloing the game once you hit the Ascana defense mission. By that point enemies are strong enough to threaten Maxim and there are too many for him to handle on his own. The time limit in the escort map, the spread out nature of Petal's chapter, and the all-around assault on the boat chapter prevent them from dominating. Especially the last one, where the enemies have enough routes to the lose condition that Jericho and Maxim alone can't cover them. And they're practically mandatory to deal with the boss.

And then we get to Augustus's side. It's interesting to play as a side character who doesn't actually join the main party yet and having a full mounted party is neat. None of the characters ever felt like dead weight here, although Ludger and Milos had a few slow points. If I have one complaint about that part it's that the second map feels heavily padded out with all the forest maze, even with Milos being able to fly. The third map is also fairly long and the forest is only bad at one point. At least everyone can rescue everyone else and some characters have better forest movement.

Resource distribution is good so far. I never felt myself desperate for money or weapons with the frequent sources of income and the shops being well spaced out. Augustus's side also has sufficient drops that you can get through them, although I really hope they get a chance to resupply soon. I'd like to sell that Red Gem and Lenore is nearly out of bow uses because of how heavily I used her.

The writing is fairly entertaining. It's not every day that you see a Lord character being a sheltered brat and being chastised left and right for it. There's a nice dichotomy between the two Lord characters, and their banter with the side characters also got a few laughs. There are a few weak points though: the first boss's dialogue is a worn-out meme and I have several questions as to why three characters are Tellius characters in all but name.

Overall I like the progress that's happened to it, even if it's rough in a few places. My last real suggestion is to put in a proper buffer chapter that cannot be progressed past and turns into Chapter 12 in the next release. You can even have it loop back to start like it does now. I'd just like something so that you don't have to choose between replaying Chapter 11 and leaving it alone until the next release.

Hate to keep asking questions, but are there any side chapters in the current demo?

No, but we have do have some planned.

Edit: A quick amendment to the previous release:
This patch contains the planned custom music all the way until the end of the demo. Feel free to try it out if you want to listen to something other than vanilla FE7 music.

What are the items available in the desert map? I'm wondering if I missed any. I really enjoyed your hack; the characters had great personalities and were fun to use. Even the archers. In hacks with bow armors I tend to use though but I really liked using the ones you made. Magic felt kinda weak at times though; some of the bandits/brigands were super tanky which I liked.

It was weird seeing an evil Ike and Mia though; Mia being one of my favorite characters haha. I'll gladly kill Lyre though. Are those designs final?

Edit: Also, where's the vakar blade? I couldn't find that one. I just finished; this looping thing is so cool. I can't wait for the finished product.

Yeah they're mostly final outside of some touchups here and there. All will be explained in the future or not since we're fairly dead at the moment

The sword should be in the upper left corner.
