It all depends on the student I think. Personally I thought I had a lot of external motivation going through grade school. Largely being told that I would be part of the 55%(or so) that wouldn't graduate. Now I'm in college and all of this is internal motivation.

as I understand the question I guess it's like 'do you go to school because you want to or due to external pressures' which I guess is fair enough but 'extrinsic' isn't a word unregardless of what Google says

which assumes that the entire readership attends school.

In any case, I'm in university right now, and if I didn't want to be there I'd be kind of fucked.

...what? oxford dictionary says it's been a word for 500 years

anyways intrinsic; motivation or lack thereof is entirely due to (a) how I feel about the material (b) inflating my own ego

I'd say that when the concept of education institutions came about, it was more intrinsically motivated. But a lot of education institutions are extrinsically motivated now, because they're often sold as a ticket to a bright future to the public, so there's a lot of money to be made.

Oh wait, was this about how I feel about uni? Well...
