The desert heat never subsided, but at least inside the main base hangar, she could catch a break from it. Fully dressed in captain attire, not a sleeve wrinkled out of place, not a hair hanging out of order. Today was the day! Or it was supposed to be the day...

Scenario 1: Quiet Wings Take Flight

July 27th, Galactic Year 0251

Deep under the sun of the Nevada Desert stood a recently built military base, belonging to the Allied Nations Federation; code named Dry Lake. The climate was inhospitable for the longest time-- changes in environment and the increasing pressure of global warming --, but recent advancements in construction-- specifically in unmanned construction, made it possible to create a base within the sweltering hills without having to risk human injury during. After it was built, it was swiftly assigned , a small set of soldiers, and: Jessica Gefalscht, the current defacto-commander of this base. Not only the commander, but the Captain of the also recently built Allied Nations Federation Space Fleet: Heion Riese. Straight out of pilot training, and straight off the shipyard, the two are ready for space flight and the defense of the ANF!

As long as she can keep it together! Jessica stood nervous in the hangar, below her new ship, the large vessel taking up the entire interior space. It's so big... And I've gotta keep it all in top shape, or I'll probably get sacked... Hoooo boooy... If this were a drill or another academy test, she'd be fine. Her nerves were great under that sort of stress. It was leading. New people were always a mystery to figure out; not difficult, but not the most pleasant. And when she made a mistake, she froze, and it took some barking to get her back into order. In reality, she was only there because she graduated top of her class, the best at tests and drills. Could she handle something this important?

"No time like the present..." And the present was coming up much faster than she wished. The hangar's main door had already opened, a squad of fresh cadets and hopefuls being ushered towards her. Roxanna wasn't even there yet, as much as the older woman probably would have complicated her nerves further. At least she could count on her to bark her back to reality if she slipped up.

There was no longer and time to wait, or any time to get out of sight. The recruits were at her doorstep, and she had to welcome them! With a deep breath and a puffing out of her chest, she put on her most official face and saluted.

"Welcome, to Dry Lake base! I am the Commander-in-Chief of this establishment, and your new Captain! I hope you've all been properly introduced to the base, and if not, I will be taking any questions you may have at present. If not, you're all welcome to, uh... S-Suit up and get ready." She slurred her introduction a bit, she'd stuttered; her voice cracked a bit. But she didn't freeze! And she got out all of what she needed to say.

The recruits had, in fact, been shown around the facilities first. There was a large, empty range out behind the main mech hangar, primarily used for fire drills and fields tests. There was the main control tower, to deal with any incoming flights. Pilot lodging, a small mess hall with an adjoined cafeteria. The base even had internet, all the way out in the desert! Though, the main attractions were the robot and ship hangars, the former hosting all the suits that base had on hand, totaling twenty, with a mix and match of different standard ANF types.

The biggest-- literally --attraction sat behind Jessica, still holding her shaky salute. Nearly half a kilometer long, the Heion Riese may have been smaller than most ANFSF Leviathan class ships, but it was certainly not fitted with anything less than the stellar standard that any captain would expect. Finely polished and crafted dual beam cannon systems, a full array of anti-air guns, missiles stocked and loaded, awaiting fire. The sleek design that cut through the air as it flew, and cut through space as it sailed. The ANF had taken it upon itself to craft their ships to resemble the ships of the old millennium, with obvious modifications to the hull for fitting thrusters and gravity boosters.

With everything having been shown to them, all that remained was for the recruits to introduce themselves, ask their questions, and hop into their suits. Las Vegas Command had already issued a training exercise for the group.

//GM Note: Thorvald, Brant, Kim, Bruno, Tarquin, Astin, Mateus and Elaine may now post!

//They have been informed of all the bases additions, and may ask whatever they wish, or remain silent after their introduction! Find your IC and follow it~

Astin was near the back of the group, having fallen behind at one point after getting distracted by all of the robots the base had but had managed to barely catch up right as they came into the hangar. They didn't seem overly flustered by this, instead they were already starting to lag behind slightly again having become distracted by some of the equipment near the hangar door. Shaking themselves slightly after noticing the group was still moving forward, they hurried to catch up again, though remained quiet for now, waiting for someone else to break the silence.

So, this is our commander? A greenhorn? Great. She thought, placing her hands in her pockets. She turned to look at her 'comrades'. These were the people Elaine was gonna be working with. Elaine wasn't very impressed. She looked back up. "All I wanna know is if these babies got cooling systems. I ain't going out in any desert trapped in some barbecue grill." She said, without a hint of respect in her voice.

Brant felt his eyes involuntarily shift to one of the other recruits after their captain's introduction. This was the time for first impressions, and although the captain had a nervous introduction, it was still charming in its own way. This other girl on the other hand was a little abrasive. That might actually be a good thing in battle, but for now it was probably just making their poor captain nervous. Maybe he could help reverse that.

"So you're Captain Gefalscht, then," he gave a thin smile. "It's a pleasure meet you, though I do have a question before suit up." It wasn't something he wanted to go into detail about publicly, but this was probably the best time to get the information he needed before it was too late for him to do anything about his potential problem. "Are there any important restrictions on outbound communications from the Heion Riese? My ... family, I guess you could say ... They can go through the proper channels if they need to get a message to me, but they'd prefer a direct line if they can get it."

Thorvald was uncomfortable in his specialist's uniform, and preferred not to wear it when he could get away with it. It always seemed a little too tight in the collar, and just generally stiff and formal. Maybe it wasn't necessarily the uniform itself (although the cut of the fabric and the starchy stiffness certainly didn't help matters), maybe it was just what it represented?

It'd been about five years since he'd sort of been "pressed" into service for the ANF as a "reward" for his assistance in extricating an ANF research team from a sticky situation they'd found themselves in after Apotheosis had leaked news of the expedition's goals, course, and entourage, which had provided some enterprising pirates with the intelligence they'd needed to pull together enough courage to attempt a raid, one which likely would have succeeded. It hadn't been completely involuntary, however, as the compensation was far better than what he could have hoped to bring in on his own with what had been left of the family business after the unfortunate incident that had claimed the lives of his father and grandfather. He'd been just scraping by, and with a newborn daughter, that wasn't a comfortable position to be in. So he "sold out", and relocated from Greenland to Labrador. The post mostly involved training people how to handle mechanized equipment in aquatic environs, but there were still the occasional mineral collection or other retrieval missions, the sorts of things Thorvald found much more exciting. Of course, he'd had to receive a fair amount of training himself "to be sure he was fully prepared", but honestly it was like edge case of edge case scenarios they were dealing with there. Seriously, what're the odds he was ever going to have to be able to handle himself in outer space? Please.

He... may have pushed his luck a little too far, though, with his most recent stunt, especially knowing that Major Ratigan had never been particularly fond of him, but when all was said and done he wouldn't have done anything differently. Sure enough though, it'd been the last straw, and when he'd been called in to report to his direct superior, Sergeant Jezebel (Jess, she hated her given name) Barnes, the news she'd had for him was reassignment. Truth be told, it really sounded like the brass at ANF were shooting themselves in the foot with this one, transferring a water terrain specialist to the middle of a godforsaken desert, but Thorvald got paid either way. The hassle of relocating his family to the military base at Vegas was certainly unfortunate, but you make do with what life throws you. He was just glad the school year hadn't already started, putting Holly through that sort of trauma would have been exactly the opposite effect of what he'd intended. It was close enough to this Dry Lake establishment for frequent visits, and hopefully the upper management here would be a little easier to handle and more forgiving on such matters than the last ones were...

...though, taking a look at his peers, and his fresh-from-academy CO, Thorvald wasn't entirely sure what to make of the situation after all: There was the tall, spitfire lass with similar hair color as himself, whose attitude was frankly insubordinate (not that someone living in a glass house should really be throwing stones, but there's no denying it); a couple of literal children (if first glances could be trusted) both of them with somewhat dusky in complexion, though one was noticeably more slender than the other; a tall pale fella with purple hair in a style that... didn't quite fit him, with a shy "don't wanna be here" attitude. That said, a couple were a good sight more reassuring, like that chiseled Asian chap in the flight uniform, or the amber eyed man who'd just asked about family. You gotta respect someone whose first thought is to their kin. Then there was... no, that couldn't actually be her, could it? Thorvald squinted a bit to get a better look. No, focus on the captain now, that can wait till later.

With a bit of a grudging salute, Thorvald piped up with his question as well. "Captain, Specialist Eriksson reporting. If you don't mind, what exactly are we suiting up for again? I got the briefest of overviews on the way over here, but a more thorough explanation of the current mission would definitely help clear things up for me."

So, one of them was talking! That was good. That same one was already showing signs of disrespect. That was bad. Expected! But, bad... Jess held back a sigh, as she let her salute down. How to deal with insubordination... Y-You're supposed to reprimand them, but so soon? I don't want people to think I'm too strict, so, I-- Unable to finish that thought, one of the other pilots came forth with a question, Jess directing her eyes over to him.

"Family? I, suppose that should be fine, you were allowed into the force, and they run background checks, so..."

Another question added itself onto that one, one of the few formally dressed fellows saluting and raising his voice to go with them. "Ah, that, well..." It was only three questions, one of them incredibly simple, and Jess was already starting to feel overwhelmed. But you extended the option, so you can't just shirk away from them... Roxanna will never get off your back if you can't ever handle yourself.

"The robots are cooled, yes," she answered first, trying to ignore the tone as she felt herself shrinking under that wide brimmed captain's hat. "As for family, ah, a-as I said, you had a background check run on you when you applied; anyone contacting you would have been given access or been restricted, s-so... You'll have to see for that one." The questions started to dwindle a bit and her mind calmed down slightly,

And that left Eriksson. Jess had been given a primer on all of these pilots and told their names-- but not been shown their faces, so it was good to get a start on matching them. "R-Right, you're all here to get tested on your aptitudes at piloting in a live fire exercise." She's shrunk less, trying to gain back her faux confidence. "I've read all your reports from your training, but it's good to get a visual on your abilities. So that's... The plan. There's a large test field behind the hanger, you'll all be suiting up and getting into the provided robots in the next hanger over, and fighting some AI run test mechs. Is that enough information?"

It did dawn on her, as she finished. "OH! I'm... Ah, haha, Jessica. Captain Gefalscht." I didn't even tell them my name in my clumsy speech. Even if they were told during the tour-- ugh... Good going. That familiar slouching feeling was creeping itself back into her shoulders.

Bruno surveils the group assembled with him--a motley bunch, much like his crews on Mars. [such young bucks qualifying for a mech-piloting position like this only speaks to their talent. In all truth, I am still surprised I qualified, myself, but perhaps thirteen years' piloting and an unblemished record speaks louder than I give it credit for.] Speaking of talent, there was somebody here Bruno certainly wouldn't expect to be deployed for active duty for several years: a new friend, and a prodigy at that! Suppressing his surprise, Bruno watches his commander carefully. [she is out of her depth and overwhelmed. It appears that she has very little command experience; in the unlikely event of immediate combat, we should be prepared for catastrophic failure.]

A training exercise. On such short notice? "Captain Gefalscht. Lieutenant Junior Grade Bruno Tian reporting." A crisp salute follows Bruno's address to the nascent commander. "With what information are we operating for this exercise, ma'am?" He really would have preferred to allow Jessica to compose herself, but when one omits critical information in one's haste, that is only a recipe for failure. Costly, unnecessary failure.

Mateus responded to the salute in kind, but didn't hold it for nearly as long as the captain. He didn't have any real questions about the base, so he just listened quietly to the others. He began vibrating slightly as he stood and listened to the briefing, already anxious to get out into the the training field and into the fray. He didn't really care about the details, he just wanted to start already.

Deployment... it had come far sooner that Tarquin had expected.

Considering how well his group training had gone, it would have made more sense to send him back to the solo simulations, not put him on the field. His supervisors must have had some reason, naturally they'd told him very little - it wasn't that he had a place to refuse or question their authority. He'd seen how dry and hot the land around them was, it was something worth avoiding if possible. To think, people wanted to move to another planet instead of work the land they already had.

Their captain didn't seem entirely sure of herself, she was nothing like the people who commanded and monitored Tarquin. She seemed awfully young for such a high ranking position. At least she could answer the others' questions, it showed that she knew the answers if nothing else. He didn't think too much of the others either, he had spotted Bruno - it was somewhat of a surprise to see a familiar face. There was a loud woman, she was just as rude as what he'd seen of the teenagers he'd been grouped with before. From what he'd seen anyway, he'd never actually mustered the willpower to talk to any of them directly.

At least it was only a training exercise, Tarquin would have been more relieved but the prospect of being evaluated was probably just as daunting for him as the risk of death. His last few group simulations had been abysmal, he'd tried taking what he thought was Bruno's advice, but all he'd managed to do was throw off his own team with sporadic actions.

It was probably best to give their captain time to respond to the others, and Tarquin was still trying to refine the cover story he'd been given.

Oh right. They were supposed to be introducing themselves. Thanks to that reminder from a few of the others, Astin gave a quick neat salute that was slightly at odds with the rest of their demeanor, clearly something that had been drilled into them at the Academy. "Sergeant Astin Doyle. Hmm, oh is it time for questions? I think I had one..." Their voice trailed off and they were quiet for a few seconds before they started slightly. "Oh, right, uhm, do we get choices over what equipment or robots have?"

"A training mission, eh? Thought we were doing something a bit more important out here." She said. She felt like she had gotten all the training she needed from the incident on Earth Colony 2. She shrugged. "Whatever. I'm game, either way. A little warmup never hurts." She said with a grin, looking up at the Captain. "Name's Elaine Hedrick." She said, pointing to herself with her thumb to her chest. "And I'm the girl who'se gonna be kicking copious amounts of ass out on the frontlines." Her confidence was almost as insufferable as her insubordination. Still, she wasn't being as rude as before with her tone. At least she had some relief from the desert heat inside those buckets of bolts.

More questions... Alright, you can deal with this, just keep your rhythm going and you'll be fine... Maybe... Though, this one had her stumped. Didn't she just say? Was it not enough? "Information? Uh... I just said... Well, it's live fire testing against some drones... You'll be set against two targets to test your weapons systems, and then the group will face a small unmanned squadron of suits. A-Any damage sustained by the fight we can repair, so don't worry about that." Was that too much? Maybe it was enough. That was the idea behind the exercise, anyway.

Another name, good! Astin... That was one of the academy pilots, right. Jess could remember that much. Which meant maybe they'd perform better than the rest? Trained academy pilots seemed far better to her in test simulations. They had another question, though. Jess tried to smile. "Yes, you'll get the chance to see what your robot has on it, and to outfit it with what we have in stock. Plenty to choose from--"

The rude one spoke up again. Jess couldn't manage to mask her sigh this time, though it was quiet. Elaine, is it... Jess had a feeling as to why her team looked so ragtag. Maybe the wig heads up top had thrown her here with them just to get rid of them for the time being. "I-It's a test to get a handle on what you can all do, under live fire, so... Bear with it. If you can't handle that much th-then, you shouldn't be here." Elaine's attitude spoke confidence, but her words spoke insubordination and the brig. Jess hoped that Roxanna would be late enough to not catch actions like this, because while the captain didn't have the confidence to issue out a warning, she could already hear that condescending tone...

Names were starting to crop up, it would probably be worth remembering them for the duration of the assignment - at least he already knew Bruno. It was best to make himself known, at least so he didn't get mistaken for the short man, he had been deliberating whether he were another child or just a man on the unfortunate end of the gene pool. Stepping forwards, Tarquin passed Elaine. It was probably subconsciously, but he gave her a rather dismissive glance, he'd seen braggarts like her in the training halls - and they didn't last long at all.

"Captain, Tarquin Barnabus Herrington IV reporting in." he announced, saluting with a perfectly rehearsed performance. The chances were that the captain wasn't briefed on him, she didn't seem remotely important enough. "I was instructed to inform you that this will be my first live drill. However, I was sent with copies of my simulation results if you require them."

This would be his first real test, none of the failed group sessions would matter if he could succeed here. The Captain wouldn't have the nerve to provide command if she were this nervous in battle. He didn't need the group to succeed, he just needed to prove that his own performance was acceptable.

Brant suddenly wondered if he would have even been posted here if the Alkaevs couldn't get to him within a reasonable time frame. Probably not, he realized. They definitely had a direct line to him, and they'd use it sooner or later. Fortunately for him, Firmia was his handler and not one of the stone faced elders.

He decided to put the communication issue out of mind for now and focus on the matter at hand. He nodded his acknowledgement to Captain Gefalscht. "Thanks."

Names started getting exchanged as soon as Brant had gotten his answer, and as much as he'd have rather gone off to get suited up like he'd planned, he figured it'd be better to wait for another opening to name himself. After that, maybe ... hopefully. To his surprise, it sounded like they would have time to make a few modifications to their machines. He would have to look into that before they actually got into the field. The rest of the questions were a bit too obvious.

Their test itself was starting to concern him, though. Brant didn't know if it was standard procedure in the ANF to stick groups of unacquainted soldiers and officers together and test their abilities as a group before they even had a chance to get to know each other, but he wasn't too fond of it regardless. They might be expecting things from each other that just weren't going to happen; forget the chain of command. He supposed being dropped in cold would force any inherent problems with this squadron to the surface, where they could be dealt with swiftly. Looking at it that way, he could at least see why something like this might be happening. Still, he wasn't fond of the idea.

Brant wanted them to perform well on this test, exceeding everyone's expectations if possible, even his own, but that didn't seem likely with so little information about each other. Would they be focusing too hard on a specific target and tripping over each other, or blocking each other's sight lines? To him, it seemed like all this test was really going to show was that he and his squad mates wouldn't purposely shoot each other in the field. Hopefully their squad leader could coordinate things well enough to keep everyone out of everyone else's way. One way or the other, Brant was glad he would be piloting an aircraft.

Oooh, that pipsqueak already went and started it? Hurried steps resounded through the hangar. Roxanna was going to be late, she was just notified that Captain Gefalscht was to meet the recruits! Did she want me to miss it? Hah, no way, I'm going to watch her every step, that one. She had to know what the army was thinking, fielding a fresh rookie on that glorious new spaceship... taking a look at it from the hangar below, it seemed a massive upgrade from her usual kraken-class ship, both in size and armaments. Roxanna bit her lip, that rookie was just getting too much, something had to be off. Maybe the top brass switched them as an accident?

That'd have to wait, with the rookie in question and their recruits finally in sight. "Well, well. Hello, everyone!" Roxanna picked a cheery tone, clasping hands and slowing down her pace. It wouldn't be good to interfere with the introductions, Roxanna wasn't that kind of person! Besides, if she showed her professionalism, then surely the others would see who was in charge. Maybe.

"I'm Roxanna Martison, your Executive Officer. I'm so, so sorry for this tardiness on my end. There was a bit of... miscommunication, but that will be sorted out from now on." She stepped slowly towards their rookie captain, casting a good glance over their recruits. That was... a very motley crew, moreso than she was reported. She thought she spotted at least two kids. What was up with that? "I see you've already started, Captain Gefalscht." She was trying really, really hard not to berate the rookie. Not yet, anyways, that'd just be poor form. "I will let you continue." Roxanna put up a smile, deciding to sit back and watch for now.

Elaine caught the glance that 'Tarquin' had given, and she wasn't amused. Who the hell does this kid think he is? He barely looks like he's out of school! If this little runt was wanting to start something, she wasn't gonna back down.

Of course, someone else had to enter the scene, and this someone looked far more competent as a leader than the rookie they were given. But that also meant she actually had to behave. Fine then. We'll settle this later...

Tarquin Barnabwhat? Mat resisted the urge to scratch his head. Is that guy a prince or something? That's a pretty fancy name. The kid was even shorter than him, thankfully, but his really weird name made him stick out. Either way, it seemed like everyone else was starting to introduce themselves, so it made sense for him to follow suit.

He quickly moved his hand back to a salute towards Jessica and Roxanna - although it went a little too far at first due to over enthusiasm and he had to snap it back into place quickly. Hopefully nobody saw that... "Sergeant Mateus Lemos reporting, Captain!" Before adding: "the first one, I think." for clarification. Maybe he had some great uncle named Mateus or something, but as far as he knew he was indeed the first!

Jess felt herself staring at Tarquin. That's him? You're kidding me! I thought the age on his document was a typo... This child; this preteen, apparently had the most precise and spotless simulation tests on record for the ANF... Even better than her own, luckily not being where her job requirements lay. Still, it was impressive to see results like that from someone so young. She nodded at his statement, but then shook her head. "I've read all of your reports already, so I know of your grades and simulation scores... If you can perform like that in a proper mech, there's nothing to worry about."

Before she could get truly excited about anything, that voice rang out into the hangar. Jessica felt herself flinch, meaning it must've been visible. "Hello, XO." A title was good enough, right? Jess was on rather uncomfortable grounds with Roxanna. Their first meeting started with Jess extending a handshake, and Roxanna shouting her down. Something about working for a teenager being preposterous, she should've been the captain, this was ridiculous, and everything in between-- she swore she heard her XO take a jab at her hair, even.

Whatever her beef was, Jess had the marks for this! She'd show all of them, seriously! Once they got into a combat situation, her command would take hold, and things would be just fine~ Jess gave Roxanna a slightly more confident nod, turning back to the group to hear Mateus introduce himself. He even made her smile! What a cute little joke. "Right. So that leaves... Two of you-- you'd be Brant then, yes?" she asked, looking at the man asking questions about family. She doubted the other girl was Brant, it didn't feel like quite the gender neutral name. That left... Her. Jess drew eyes over and waited for her to give her own introduction. No need to take the spotlight on first impressions.

So this was the group, was it? Quite a mixed bag, at any rate, Seung-Min noted to herself, letting her eyes wander to each of them as they made their introductions, memorizing each name and face together, storing them in her memory. An assortment of what she could only assume was talent, along with several members clearly carried by experience. Before Seung-Min herself had gotten her words together, it had already been announced that they would be conducting a live drill, which brought a light grin to the young Korean's face, lips lifting to gently reveal perfectly white teeth. It seemed she had been the last to introduce herself, but that wasn't an issue in of itself, after all.

'We'll have to see how they work out, at any rate. Captain is inexperienced, clearly some tension with XO... even if I was normal I could see that... that one is a hot-headed ruffian. The young one seems nervous, despite his outside collected facade... the others...' Seung-Min thought to herself, categorizing her comrades in her mind, before she felt it, her eyes turning to Brant.

'Another one, huh? I wonder if he sensed me already...' She asked herself, sure that the answer would come in time. Turning back to the Captain, she gave the commanding officer a swift salute, before introducing herself.

"Lieutenant Kim Seung-Min, Captain."

Astin nodded thoughtfully in response and sunk back down into quiet mode, mostly just paying attention to those around them. Interesting mix of people, that's for sure... Captain seems nice even if she doesn't really seem to know what she's doing. Could be worse I guess. Still, this place is interesting for sure. Hopefully it works out with this group. And that they really do mean that I can choose whatever equipment for my robot I want... They sighed, and wandered over away from the group towards the end of the bay that they hadn't entered from, mostly just looking around at everything and nothing.

Brant felt something aimed right at him, not a weapon per se, not an overt one at any rate. He'd felt something like it earlier, and it reminded him of Firmia, but he'd tried to ignore it, both so he could focus on more important matters, and because Firmia wasn't on the base. He couldn't possibly sense her from so far away ... not yet, at least. Someday, maybe. Grandiose aspirations aside, Brant was certain there was another telekinetic in the group now, and they were well aware of him, too.

Almost as soon as it'd happened, the feeling had diminished. It wasn't gone, obviously, but it didn't feel like Brant had a combination rangefinger-infrared camera aimed directly on him, anymore. He nodded to the captain. "Yeah, I'm Brant." At least he didn't have to look for an opening after all. He stole a quick but subtle glance at the Lieutenant nearby. She was probably the one. He'd spent enough time standing around, though. He was more interested in seeing what he would be flying up close than anything else at the moment. There'd be time to get to know everyone after they ... got to know each other on the battlefield.

Roxanna didn't even need to put up a smile once their last recruit introduced herself. I know this one, the top brass has some pretty high expectations for this girl, and Brant as well. Well, someone had to read through the report cards they received, after all. The pipsqueak probably did at some point too, but Roxanna did it first! She thinks. "I take it everyone's been introduced, then?" I've already missed some of you, great. I might actually need to confirm with the pipsqueak... Roxanna held back a short sigh, her smile mellowing down.

"Alright, you should get ready for the field test --you did inform them about the field testing, right? The live-fire practice?" The Officer cut her own words short, clearly testing the young captain as soon as she remembered it. "There are mechs standing by in the other hangar, so you'll be able to pick and outfit them with combat-ready armaments, no paint rounds or missiles. Pretty neat, huh?" Her eyes wandered quickly back to her captain. "Should I take them there, or are you up to the task, Captain?" The urge to speak that last word with a teasing lilt was strong, but Roxanna was the better person. For sure!

"Kim... Alright." The name sounded familiar, but that was probably just remembering her document. One of the two TK specialists, the other being Brant. Jess had read up on their records, and the subject, so she knew that they could probably tell she was feeling more than guarded, right now. Wonderful first impression. "Yes, I told them. They know-- h-hey..." Jess had been just about to get to that, before Roxanna cut her off and gave the pilots their orders. at least she was giving her the courtesy of letting her guide them to the hanger. "I can handle it." She tipped her hat to the woman in a show of near defiance, though not entirely sure why she needed to be defiant to her XO. It was complicated.

"If you'll all come with... Me... Excuse me! Astin, right? Please, stay with everyone else." Having people wander off already was definitely a bad sign. "A-Anyway, come with me, everyone. There's rooms to change into your flightsuits inside the mech hangar." It was a fairly short walk, the hangar being long, not wide, and a double door slid open to let them into the next one over. Lining the walls, a few mechanics running about doing last minute checks, stood the rather impressive mass produced ANF models. Velites, Legionaries, An Accensus or two. All spotless and ready for combat testing. "Alright, so... There's a mech here to suit you all, and weapons to choose from in each of their bays. Feel free to inspect as much as you need, speak to any of the mechanics currently on staff. Or myself; I know what each one does best. Not just here to wear the uniform, after all." She nodded and gave the mechs a once over.

"S-So... Yes. Let's get that underway."

"Hurry, hurry!" Oh no, everyone is here already! A young woman in a white labcoat and bright blue glasses rushed around the hangar, attempting to review everything to see it was working, but turned towards the Captain and recruits when they arrived. "Hello, it is good meeting you! I am Mizushima Juria, engineer from First Colony for the leviathan ship Heion Riese. Sometimes I am called Jade, you can too! If I use words wrong enough that I am hard to understand, please say. My speaking is not the best, Japanese is my first language." She bowed to each of the pilots in kind, a small robot trailing behind her becoming apparent. She picked it up, patting it on the head and eliciting a mostly natural-sounding mewl. "He is Reo! Small cat robot I made when I was small girl to learn mechanics. Added metals and plastics to cute stuffed toy. Will run around the hangar, but has friendly cat AI! If you are nice, Reo is kind cat friend. I hope we will all work together on leviathan ship well."

Brant couldn't hide the dismal look on his face. The tension between the senior officers was thick enough to use for cover in a shootout, and there wasn't a thing he could do about it without making his own situation worse. Fortunately, Captain Gefalscht broke things off and took them with her. It was time to get a look at his aircraft. He'd known about it since the initial briefing, but hadn't seen anything but a few unhelpful pictures and a 3D projection. It was time to get an actual look at the thing and see what he was in for.

It was no time at all before they had arrived, and Brant immediately spotted to Accensus in the hangar. Neither one really called to him--that would have warranted some concern on his part. He supposed he'd take the closer of the two if no one beat him over there, but the Captain said something that caused him to stay put for a moment and think. Brant smiled as he finished his thought. This ought to be interesting. "Captain," he raised his hand just slightly above his head, "I've done some reading and a few flight simulations for the Accensus but no combat sims. Worse, I've got russian system practices drilled pretty deep. You mind giving me a quick tour of either of these so I don't make any risky assumptions in the air?" It was a test and he was damn sure going to be ready for it.

Brant wasn't going to complain for not getting an immediate answer. Some mechanics and an engineer showed up right as he was wrapping up his carefully worded request. She had a small feline-esque bot with her that nearly brought his full smile back. It was just like an engineer to have a mechanical pet instead of a flesh and blood one. He gave a small but cordial wave to Jade. Her english was a patchwork in need of serious refinement, but it didn't bother the man one bit.
