Now that I think about it, there's some other songs from this album that I like better, but it's good all the same. This is a song that defines her style. Dijon Mustard Posted July 6, 2016 Share Posted July 6, 2016 feel like talking about the rockers, quasi-effortpost stylecourtney barnett: one of the few current rock musicians i'm a fan of. unabashed 60's/90's throwbackery but sometimes you don't have to work outside of rock fans' comfort zones to be fresh (you could argue that maintaining the comfort zone in which she operates is Her Point, if that's what you're into). she just hops from one witty observation to the next, making little slacker confessionals, because, who cares, man. dunno where she goes from here if all that's true. the bar? still, promising. she's a fun listen and she's found Her Voice. this charming song is the best introduction to her imomount eerie (aka phil elverum): one of the few current rock musicians i'm a fan of (2-for-2 holy shit gj threadm8s), tho it feels weird calling him "current" cuz he's been around so long. my #analysis is that anyone who likes his voice on this particular song, and difficult capital-A Albums in general, should check out his album the glow pt. 2 (there is no the glow pt. 1 what an inscrutable fellow). or just listen to the song "I Want Wind to Blow" if you want a taste. that one's p stripped down, but he also makes loud, crashing noise music like the wonderful ocean roar. it's a capital-D Difficult album; tbh i can only recommend it in good faith to people who are inclined to like heavy/noise music. caveats shmaveats, it's one of the few rock albums released this decade that i've been able to wrap my arms around and have an extramarital affair with. Sorry about that. Anyway, I've always found the Clear Moon/Ocean Roar set of albums to be one of my favorite album pairings, because of the way they oppose while also complimenting each other. The way both albums bleed into their counterparts is also pretty cool, with Clear Moon sharing some of it's light, delicate ambient-rock (is that even a thing?) with Ocean Roar; while Ocean Roar will share some of it's harsh, noisey drone-rock (?) with Clear Moon. If you liked Yawning Sky (or the Giles Corey track from the Vicar of Music playlist, as both bands are somewhat similar in sound), I'd suggest that you go with Clear Moon first, as it's the first album in the set, and it's more similar to the actual song itself; then, if you enjoyed some of the more harsh parts of the album, move onto Ocean Roar. After that, I'd say, like Dijon said, the Glow Pt. 2 is a good place to move onto, or you could just explore the massive Mount Eerie/The Microphones discography for yourself. Go wild, dude. I'll be honest though, while their S/T album wasn't really my favorite by them (feels a bit uninspired in some parts), Enigma Machine, being their first proper instrumental since Stream of Consciousness is actually one of the more worthwhile tracks off the album. Only problem with the track is I've never liked how Mike Mangini's drums sound. He's a cool drummer and all, it's just that he sounds too mechanical for me sometimes.
