Pokemon Emerald "Merciless or Merciful" Nuzlocke

Recommended Posts

I apologize in advance if this finds a better in home in "Other Game Drafts." I thought this would be a better spot since it's Pokemon-related. Anyway...

When I first saw what a Nuzlocke was, I decided that I would never burden myself with it. However, Having played Pokemon Emerald for about ten years at this point, I wanted to go beyond "Mono-type" challenges. So, grinding my words to dust, it's time for...

Pokemon Emerald "Merciless or Merciful" Nuzlocke!!

I have never done a Nuzlocke before now, so this'll be interesting. So, what am I doing for this? Well, it's mostly a standard Nuzlocke, but with a "Roulette" twist to it. Here's the full rule list from my Notepad:

Pokemon Emerald "Merciless or Merciful" Nuzlocke Rules:

-Starter will be decided by the last digit of the Trainer ID
[1-3=Treecko, 4-6=Torchic, 7-9=Mudkip, 0=Roll a Dice (1-2=Treecko, 3-4=Torchic, 5-6=Mudkip)]
-Fainted Pokemon must be released or put in a "Graveyard" forever.
-Only the first Pokemon found in each area can be caught. If the Pokemon faints or flees, no
Pokemon can be caught in that area. This rule will not take effect until Poke Balls are
obtained.
-Give each Pokemon a nickname (treat this like Fire Emblem).
-Whiting out equals a game over. Restarting from the last save is required at that point.
The effects of the dice roll will still linger until the episode is over.
-If a Pokemon encountered first in an area was caught in a previous area, another chance is
granted to finding and catching a different Pokemon (pretending the encounter with the
previously encountered 'mon never happened).
-Shiny Pokemon can be revived or healed regardless of the rolled rule, but they have to be
the VERY first encounter on a route and they must be ignored if the Pokemon was previously
caught. They must still follow the "No Pokemon Center" restirction if that rule was rolled.
-Evolved Pokemon found on future routes can be ignored if a previously caught Pokemon
evolved into said evolution (evolving a Pokemon qualifies as having caught them).
-The battle style must be "Set."
-Each Gym Leader battle or May battle must be fought in equal numbers. The Elite Four is the
ONLY exception to this rule, as the champion will have a full team of six Pokemon.
-Special Rolled Rules: A six-sided die will be rolled before the start of each episode
to decide the "special rule." The effect can be either positive or negative (this is where
the "Merciless or Merciful" subtitle comes into play). The rules for each number are:
1: "Be Your Own Doctor" - No Pokemon Centers can be visited for the entire episode.
2: "Bifrost Staff" - Revives can be used (only one per Pokemon).
3: "I'm Afraid We're Out of Stock" - No items can be bought from Poke Marts.
4: "Return of the Einherjar" - Any Pokemon can be caught regardless of what's encoutered
first on each route (even Shiny Pokemon).
5: "MEDIC!!" - No healing items may be used, but trips to the Pokemon Center are still
allowed.
6: "I Am A Move Tutor" - TMs can be taught to Pokemon during the episode (they cannot be
taught otherwise). HMs can still be taught regardless, especially if one is needed for
game progression.
-In addition to the special rules listed above, a second die will be rolled every 5th
episode. These extra rules can either be extremely rewarding or unforgiving. The second die
must be rolled for the Pokemon League regardless of the episode number.
1*: "Separated From Everyone..." - Only one Pokemon can be used during the episode. The
chosen Pokemon will be my decision.
2*: "Let's See Some Squats, Ladies!" - All Pokemon levels will be raised by a randomly
rolled number before the episode starts (1-6). They are immune to "death" during
off-screen grinding and will be fully healed prior to the episode's beginning.
3*: "THIEF!!" - All items currently in the bag must be TOSSED, NOT SOLD!! Any items
picked up along routes or bought from Poke Marts can be kept and used (restrictions
from the first die still apply).
4*: "Aum Staff" - Revives can be used [only three per Pokemon (can stack with "Bifrost
Staff")].
5*: "Stealth Operation" - Optional trainers must be avoided for the enitre episode. Only
boss trainers or trainer fights that absolutely CANNOT be avoided are allowed. If an
optional trainer spots me, the save file must be reloaded ("killed" Pokemon will be
usable again, but any Pokemon caught before resetting cannot be caught again).
6*: "Seize Them!" - All trainers found on a route, in a dungeon, or in a gym must be
fought. No wild encounters can be escaped. Pokemon Center visits are restricted until
all accessible trainers have been defeated. If the episode ends, this effect carries
into the next episode. Trainers that can't be accessed will become exceptions until
the means to reach them is acquired. They will be ignored if the episode ends before
they can be reached.
Here's the video detailing everything:

It is now time!!! Time to butcher even more words and names and fail to balance the audio volume with the video volume! Episode 1 of the Nuzlocke is a go!

EDIT:: July 5, 2016

Second episode and the dog dies... That happened a lot sooner than I expected.

  • 2 weeks later...

**This is mainly to keep the thread updated to avoid the risk of it going inactive**

Finally recorded and uploaded episode 3. And, wow, do I sound whiny during the fight with the Team Aqua grunt...

EDIT:: July 12, 2016

Last minute prep before tackling the gym. Next episode's going to be a bit interesting.

Okay, the media tags aren't working in the previous post (I'm assuming I can only put two media tags for videos into one post) so I have to tri-post for this update. *hears crickets in the distance* ...I'm betraying the law for a good-- *ahem* Now it's possible to challenge me in the comments!

EDIT:: July 15, 2016

Doga will choke points! ...once he's stronger.
