Beyond the Wasteland (the one that plays for Clan Trials, was also in FFTA) would probably get my vote for favorite, but all of the ones mentioned so far are really good, especially Front to Back.

In the spirit of FFTA->FFTA2: FFT (War of the Lions) or Tactics Ogre (We Must All Cling Together)

That is to say, the PSP ports, since those are probably better? I can emulate both pretty well on my phone w/ PPSSPP, so I assume a decent Windows PC could also.

Alternatively: Mercenaries Saga II, which is a $5 3DS FFT clone. Pretty fun, although super short (~10 hours, probably).

Alternatively alternatively: Disgaea (any), which as far as I can gather is an SRPG for massive weeaboos, as opposed to say, Fire Emblem, which is for moderate weeaboos.

If you're good at platformers and/or hate yourself: Wings of Vi. I only die twice a minute I swear. I can't imagine taking screenshots while this is ongoing, nevermind.

If you want to play A Good JRPG™: Trails in the Sky. Best game I played this year :v
(Only game I played this year so far, to be fair. But it's also the best game I've played in the last 12 months.)

 

I've only ever played any of these games at most a single time (I guess I did a NG+ run of Merc Saga II, and TO has partial replayability that I'm doing right now), so I wouldn't have nearly as much to say. The only series I have any particular knowledge of would be Golden Sun or TWEWY.

I could theoretically do FFT, I just don't know how to PS1 emulate very well. Last time I tried it wiped itself in Act 4...

The vanilla choice would be Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis.

An ironman run of it.

When I did PS1 emulation of the original FFT it also wiped lmao

PSP emulation went so much better.

I haven't played Knight of Lodis (Let Us Cling Together is my first foray into the Ogre Battle series), but I'd be interested in seeing it. Is that the GBA one?

Yeah, it's a prequel. It feels... kind of rough around the edges to me personally for reasons I could never quite put my finger on. But it might be interesting.

As much as I love Ogre Battle 64, I've beaten it once and almost twice. It takes like a hundred hours (admittedly, that's with a lot of turbo cheating) to beat normally, and adding screencaps/state of play would be Herculean.

This LP already exists and is really good, anyway.

To be fair, does the mobile game really count? Anyway, I'll also vote for an LP of FFT WotL. There are patches available to eliminate the slowdown problem, thankfully.

The choice between FFT and FFT WotL comes down to the translation, engrish or pseudo-old-timey-english?

For the most part, WotL uses the modern names for shared lore (particularly the Lucavi), which will better match up to characters/things we've already met in FFTA / FFTA2. This also applies for items and Jobs.

e.g., Velias (FFT) -> Belias (WotL), to match FFXII / FFTA2 / FFXIV / etc.; Priest (FFT) -> White Mage (WotL), which matches like every recent iteration ever.

WotL might be preferable for this reason, simply because continuity is nice.

That said, I don't really know what tone/approach to take with it... it's far less freeform than A2.

Poor Montblanc.

Canonically, Raw Steel saw Montblanc dead, but would otherwise have just decked him out with four Magic Rings and a robe for most of the game.

And thus we get Montblanc.

Sadly he's just a worse version of Nathala. He's slightly better in most stats (significantly worse in HP - down by 40) but lacks the skillset. The thing is, moogles only have two magic classes, so there's nothing you can really do with Montblanc. I'll try and give him a handful of maps.

Still better than this prick. 'Moovry'.

al-Cid is just a decidedly mediocre attack stat, good speed and a pistol. His skills are bad and mostly relate to flirting with women.

I might be forced to recruit him but it'll be one of the last things I do.
