Enter THE CLAN OF WORMS. Enter THE YELLOW WINGS, erstwhile CLAN DIP.








A SYMBOLIC KEY CHANGE.



And so it is time to finish the job that whatever I named Marche started. Belf? I think it was Belf, because it was 2012 and that was a meme about direct translations.

The Yellow Wings - all of whom are named, um, 'Yellow Wings', apart from the leader Kidd - consist of a thief, monk, black mage and archer, all badly-equipped, and an Animist. Animists are, I guess, moogle warriors that use druidic abilities which are pretty cool. This one in particularly is really fucking annoying because he knows how to Protect/Shell himself. White mage stays home... and I make Lawrn into a white mage, forgetting to put black magic as his secondary, fuck. That's going to make this fight tougher longer.


The black mage is, admittedly, no joke - he's the first target, without question. The fight's just a clusterfuck in the centre with the archer smugly looking on but also being an archer with a shortbow.


She uses Focus (formerly Boost) to make her next attack worth a damn.


Animists, for the record, attack using musical fucking instruments.


This one isn't fucking around.


Oh well.


Realistically, though, the fight's over once their mage is dead. He dealt about 100 damage to my party with one well-placed fireball - but the entire rest of the team are pushovers.


Stop trying to prove me wrong, Thug D! It's not happening!



Animist gets in position to kill Nofilia and then buffs instead through the power of bouncing sheep.


Kidd, also with a chance to murder Nofilia without reprisal, instead steals money.


Finally.


Still, at the end of the day, they're Clan Dip in a new dress, and we're not.


And Kidd's dead, quicker than you can say 'Napoleon Complex'.

Ivalice spelling is fucking stupid.

Green magi are interesting, but not very good - as per the thread suggestion, I will be using one, but it won't be Nofilia.

How viable are their buff spells? I usually tried to Shell or Protect a few of my units at the start of a fight, but I never checked how good their damage reduction is. I think somewhere in the midgame I tried Tranq to boost the double-damage-half-accuracy attacks.

And yeah, their stat gains are pretty good, or rather their speed growth is. I often put my Elementarist into GM when she didn't have any spells to learn just to make sure her speed wouldn't suck.

I feel as though buffs are always nice to have, since it usually takes at least a turn for the melee units to make contact. And, of course, the fact that buffs always hit is huge. I was probably harsh on the class, honestly - but there are very few genuinely bad classes in the game, so just being mediocre (see archer) looks worse than it is and being boring (see soldier) is fatal. Tranq is nice in theory, but I've never persisted with Green Magic that far - this LP will give it a shot!

Also, just as a general notice - I've been trying to build up a buffer just so I can post a small update every day, so any suggestions or requests are probably not going to be acknowledged in the LP immediately.

We start this update on the high of running someone's lunch to them, a process which will take over two days.

Rodanu's metamorphosis continues, as does Nofilia to fencer and Caul to animist. Fencers haven't appeared yet, I quite like them. They deal damage and status. Sadly, I don't think there's room for one in my final builds, but we'll have to see. They've got good stats - a bit less bulky, a fair bit faster than the soldier/warrior.

I decided to show the portrait of the Black Mage Classic but the fencer also has an amazing case of Resting Bitch Face that I adore, tbh.

This is how you force boosting your clan skills. OH, EXCEPT YOU DON'T, BECAUSE GETTING APTITUDE FUCKS YOUR NEGOTIATION, THE TWO YOU NEED.

So how does the chat feel about savescumming? Because as far as I can tell this is Literally Just Luck Of The Draw.

Then she starts being saccharine at us. This is one of those characters who will be Better After Character Development.

Right, I'm sure this person with cat imagery will not hear us from a princely two metres away. Cid and Guinness agree a 4-1 split.

The alraune, subject of our greed - the drills are worth a lot, supposedly - complete with anime anger mark, evil eyes, cape and ineffectual ranged attack.

These are the tomatoes. Is it just me or is there a bit of Charles Schultz in their artwork... ?

Adele, that's not how you maths.

Cid's picked up some monk skills - first off, he's the first of our crew who get a reaction ability, something that they do when attacked. Cid can straight-up counterattack people. One of the simplest, and arguably the best. He also can attack at range right now for Hella damage.

Oops.

Adele, for what it's worth, is a thief that's higher-level than most others around here (we're meant to be doing sidequests, after all) and can also counterattack.

After the second time I set Adele on fire I wonder if her survival is actually mandatory for the mission. I don't... actually remember.

Reading notices often unlocks subplots, and Cinqueleur is one of them. The weakest of them is level 44.

We will not be doing that yet!

We will be doing this, though.

More gossip first, though.

Anyway, the thing we're looking for is in this new region to the north, the Baptiste Hill. That said, it's still, uh, vaguely southern - we started in the southeast edge of the map, but I think there's more south bits? Anyway, it'll fill up.

No signs of Adele, so... our cunning trap has just turned into doing the job we got paid to do.

Here's the mark. From memory, these things aren't nearly as tough as they were during FFTA1. Other than that it's just birds (whose skillset is called, notably, 'Territorialism') and dogs. Notably we're allowed to bring six guys along with Cid for the first time.

Also the battle music is really nice. Most of the music in this game is. The battle itself, though, pretty straightforward. Even as underlevelled and underskilled as we are, like having a level 3 blue mage with the worst sabre in the game and no skills.

Cid is a very good unit trapped in not-very-good AI.

Ugohr, though? Not fucking about.

And he has some tricks up his sleeve, apparently... 50-ish damage to my three guys and actually healing himself, since he absorbs rocks. Fucker! He also does the standard 'being healed' little twirl and bunny hop in place.

Still, it doesn't avail him.

Our heroes stand over the dead tortoise, talking very conspicuously about how they have not picked the worthless corpse dry.

Guinness is really good at utterly labouring to a punchline. It's okay, kid. You tried. We appreciate that. They get down to business, and ask for the drill back.

Wolves bay in the distance. Vultures circle.

And Nofilia attains (one part of) her final form! One fencer and one white mage skill unlock the red mage which combines a decent assortment of basic attack, support and healing magic in one skillset, along with the ability to doublecast. Also has four move, decent stats and, well, the rapier isn't just for show. No fear, though, she'll learn something a bit spicier soon, though.

The familiar back of a head in our midst. A couple, actually. I did not (viking!) realise how many fucking cameos Montblanc made.

Adele just fuckin' like...

Adele decides to tag along since we're 'friends' now. Cid... disagrees. (Paladin! Offstage... arcanist?)

I'm lowkey okay with all the shits Adele doesn't give.

The lads are elated with this development.

Adele joins us properly at this stage - and she is a knifecat amongst pigeons. Thanks to us being underlevelled, she's immediately slightly stronger and more durable than Kyrie while being significantly faster. Sorry, Rodanu, but your time has come for the earlygame. Importantly, she has a really nice knife (that doesn't teach thief abilities) and the ability to counterattack, as well that the armour that teaches it to thieves and monks. Kyrie has it for now, and when he's done, it'll go to Caul, then whenever it's convenient Guinness and Rodanu will probably get it too. Counter is really good.

We're on the home stretch. We'll be able to recruit soon. For now, we just head to Graszton. Where Camoa is the quietly lovely high fantasy city at the crossroads of the south, Graszton is basically Scum House.

I mean, look at it. The music's all menacing, even.

We don't get any dialogue from the mysterious figure.

But Cid's is enough to convey meaning. The door slams in his face, and he walks off...

I love the music in that map too. It's called Into the Fantasy, and it's an amazing remix of The Salikawood from Final Fantasy XII. I it has this fairy tale feeling and Into the Fantasy is a really fitting name as well, not because of "Final Fantasy", but because the song really gives you the feeling that you're inside a fantasy world.

Also, is it just me, or does almost every in this game has blush stickers? Even the Bangaa have them.

Not that I mind, it kinda makes everyone cute.

Cid survived the attack... more or less.

His tiny pixel eyes blink open.

The mage lives in the Aldanna Range.

And Cid, while stable, is in no state to join us.

Nofilia's gonna be so mad that they're arguing over the patient.

Adele? She's just mad about the wallowing-in-self-pity.

Think what you will about her, she has the right idea here. The road's shut down by monsters, and we can take them down.

She struts off - it's enough for someone even as dense as Guinness to see the light, and he celebrates by shouting at the dying man.

Time to kill a big fucking dragon.

Hm...

Unsubtle foreshadowing aside, this is the last story mission until we start recruiting, doing sidequests and story progress grinds to a juddering halt.

Hint about Mist, which is a proper noun; that's the M in MP.

Making the protagonist as ignorant as the player is really handy for exposition! Anyway, Adele says it's the 'root of all magic', and it is.

Either way, we're not here to fuck spiders, as the saying that got like a million notes on Tumblr as an alleged authentic Australian saying because people on Tumblr are willing to believe anything about Australia goes.

So goes forth the party, in their last run in their current form... and I think I may have downloaded a virus with that stupid 'Foo was here' stunt.

Dangerously, they have a, um, jelly, with them. Flans are just elemental magi, pretty much, and they'll explode if you use the opposite element. Easy for fire and ice... less so thunder, since water magic is hard to come by. And Nofilia? She only knows thunder right now. She also knows Cure! Learning it for white magic through a staff also carries over to knowing it as part of red magic.

So uh, FFTA2 hired a different guy to draw all non-significant NPCs - mostly guys for subplots that warrant a portrait but not a new sprite or class.

That guy wasn't very good at art and his style doesn't remotely resemble that of the guy who did the other 90% of this game's portraits.

I savestated before this fight. Because, uh... this is not an easy fight.

Fuck the loot, I am going straight for the head on this one.

First Phoenix Down of the game. Worth noting the law here prevents fire... so if I fuck up once and don't use Specifically Blizzard with Lawrn, I'm fucked.

I then forget to move Kyrie forward.

The dragon moves forward and buffs the wolf, but that's okay. The wolf's almost dead and now, better still, they fit into a five-tile cross.

Lawrn teaches them about geometry.

And Adele gets her revenge.

Oh, fuck.

Guess what element Kyrie's sweet brass knuckles are, lads?

Guinness is eaten by a dessert.

The irony is lost on him.

And now he's in the Own Zone.

Not without company, either.

Once again, I'm reduced to using items to keep ahead.

What an easy game for babies FFTA2 is, that I am good at, as video games are easy.

Incidentally, if you were in any doubt as to how great Archer isn't as a class anymore, this is how long it's taken to get the second shortbow and the first actual status (darkness).

FFTA was all about taking down a tyrannical world built to fulfil the wishes of those trapped within, freeing them from another's escapism made manifest, and with all concerned coming to terms with reality.

FFTA2 is about Guinness filling out his assessment on his summer holidays.

... the scene ends a little before I'm ready for it, but either way Guinness calls her and she leaves.


Straight back to Graszton.


This is the next step - the far superior area control mechanic of A2. And... doing some research, we'll need to do the quest for this before recruiting begins in earnest.


So we'll just race through this and then the frankly really boring process of Getting Our Lads begins in earnest.


Ah, well. We'll live. And then Guinness drops the bomb... "Why are you helping me?" Cid fudges at first, but...

There's only two lines before the fight starts here, and one of them is "Wow, there's a lot of them!" There's three bombs, two of these adorable tiny eyes (the bigger ones from FFTA1 appear like, twice, ever) and a fireflan.


I intend to bring Caul until I realise I forgot to buy him a blade (as distinct from any variety of sword), since he class-changed. He's now a Mog Knight, a tough tank that hits hard and uses a good skillset that borrows a lot from fighter.


So I substitute in Rodanu. He's still level 3. It Shows.

This contracts Guinness with the Oil status, which makes the US Senate vote to invade him.


... And also makes fire deal more damage.


This bomb has Critical: Quicken. So he automatically moves next when reduced to critical health. Guess what bombs are liable to do at critical health?

Critical: Berserk, on the other hand... on a mage... well, they're basically down to one guy, now.

Kaiser Knuckles are maybe the strongest earlygame weapon, not only statistically but in terms of teaching Air Render, aka 'do really good damage with no mana cost from 1-3 range acknowledging facing'.
There's only like two lines of dialogue after that.


You can go into town and do a non-Auction thing, but... well, we're here, we may as well.


Ah, this is one of those graphical glitch dudes.
As a final fuck-you that I forgot to even capture... it's our first auction, so the CP are waived. The filler wasn't even necessary.



Looks complicated, right? Well, no.


Thing is, they telegraph their moves.


So it's pretty easy to just keep ahead of the curve. This did, however, take almost half of my good pieces.
With four areas to be auctioned... I don't actually remember how to get all the areas, but it's Very possible.


Represented by the soldier...


Ah. Yeah. The bonuses, that's the thing. I want to be in second place at those points, and then I'll get a token worth five. If I play my cards right...


I don't play my cards right.


In fact, I completely fuck it up.


We still win, but I then also fumble the fight for Aldanna and also lose, barely.


Still, Zedlei is ours - I throw my two fives and earn a third in the process. Thing with the auctions is, even if they telegraph their moves perfectly (sad: pass, standing ground: 1, walking: 2, pushing: 3, screaming: 5) you really don't have a lot of time in between rounds.



I apparently don't screencap proof of my partial victory - instead, have Adele's plans on medicine.



Adele has a point. There's just one problem - this is, from memory, the wakeup call boss of the game.

We come up just short - winning two regions by one, losing Baptiste by one - but this is what really makes progress possible. We're awarded more tokens.

Still... from here? The game begins in earnest.

So recruitment in FFTA2 is based on month. This house is how to sleep and skip 30, 90 or 'like, a million' days. Furthermore, beating the Zedlei fire mission gives me a mission that like... gives me the class I want if I answer a quiz.

I'm not going to get all the possible recruits in this session. I can't get Gria yet, I might not be able to get Seeq, either. And I plan to recruit three humans/viera/bangaa and two moogles/nu mou outside of the special characters.

I'll leave off one each of the three big races and also the second nu mou because they're really boring until they unlock enough stuff from white/black mage. Thus, the shopping list is a physically-inclined human, bangaa, moogle and seeq - and then I'll unlock viera, which takes another quest that is within our reach now (I'm pretty sure?), then get a physical viera as well.



Of course, recruitment isn't just from That Quest - you can also get them ambiently. Seeq (and gria) are kind of a weird half-race, with just four classes each and sharing months. Berserkers, as you can see, are literally just HP, Speed and Attack, and are terrible at every other stat.


One down, four to go.


Two houses, both alike in dignity except one's made up of bangaa and is thus better... so really the Sharks to the nu mou Jets, really. Anyway, don't worry, we'll double-cross both sides once or twice over the course of the story.


There's also a K-pop group.



You can find basic humans in Targ Wood. The Clan Mates quest has stubbornly not yet shown up.


Well, in the bangaa months, this at least happens.

"Fuck you, Parrhesia" - SquareEnix, 2011ish.
We're doing General Training to buff all our clan abilities. The middle one is just 'kill everything', but tougher ones have time limits. It's a weird slugfest - they open by slowing your whole team, are then helpless for a couple turns where you brutalise them with physical attacks and then start lashing down meteors which deal ~70 damage to single targets.
Now we save Kyrra.



Sometimes I remember that bangaa don't do the lizard esssssssssses anymore and are instead sometimes Scottish.



Targeting an Area is forbidden here, so I'm leaving the magi at home and bringing Elm, Wolfe and even Rodanu.


It's a simple fight. A bunch of basic lizard fightdaves against Kyrra... and all the enemies (and Kyrra) are level 2-4.


Like in every single Final Fantasy, dragoons are resilient lancers who can jump and breathe elemental dragon... breath. And do some other nice things.
Ours is going to be resolutely fucking invincible.


Questionable decision-making skills.

But he's a good sort.

I've realised something by this stage. This is the quest we need for Clan Mates - and the successor, in turn, to recruit viera.
(Why? Because these quests all reveal a new space in a given area, and it's those places where the quests/random viera are found.)
... However we've cycled out every single quest. So it's time to sleep again.



Every nu mou class is gated by like, 3 white mage and 5 black mage skills. We have access to 2 and 3. Recruiting more nu mou is pointless.


If you aren't convinced yet; his name was Uthma.





We'll get these done on the way.





This guy, near Graszton, realises as we give him the fruit that the fruit is completely useless for his purposes.








Chita wants literally anyone who has seen a mace before for ten days - the class you're most likely to have that can use maces is green magi (the others are all advanced nu mou), so Nofilia gets the short straw.

The first two options both succeed the quest, surprisingly, but the first is, um...



Jesus Christ, Guinness.



Nu mou have really boring lines before fights and I'm going to need to reshuffle the party so that all the other races are first on the list so get to speak instead.



Unsurprisingly, the mission is not just six people killing one shitty goblin.



Despite getting the completion messages and experience boosts to the contrary.





The law gets redrawn (lightning before, now ice) and we get to pick a new privilege (I got regeneration from the clan trial), but we're stuck with the same units as before.


I'll be honest, I irrationally dislike these missions. There's three of them, we need to do two back-to-back.


Baknamy have an attack that targets MP. Spoiler alert; Caul has no use for mana. That said, if he hits Rodanu, that's blue magic.


Rodanu's got other things on his mind, though, like being pummelled into a crater by a werewolf.

Still, the wolves are glass cannon, the fairies are... just plain old glass, and when the line starts to bend, it breaks.

So along with the shipping quest of yesterday, there's these. I'm doing all of these now because the viera we get isn't going to have a whole lot of use for AP for a bit.

Without any new dialogue, Nofilia returns successful. I give her a hammer - one that'll teach her protect as a green mage, which is also a white magic skill, and combining that and cure will give her the two white magic skills she needs for her other classes. As for Rodanu...

First bit of this mission is identical.




Along the way; floating eyes have a kamikaze dive attack, our first archery of the campaign (it's Wolfe, not Rodanu), and it turned out that Atmos Blades are lightning-elemental.



Lowkey the viera lines and hair and beret and pose really remind me of my friend Ruby.


Highkey I forgot to give Nofilia red magic secondary and also bludgeoning weapons are forbidden so she's pretty much reduced to protection and item-healing. Alternatively, because I also brought two punchmen, I can ignore the goddamn law. Since the enemies here are no pushovers, I'm going to have to.

Look, I like the law system of this game, but I like it because you can work around it with your squad selection. This? This is just kind of bullshit.

This fight is going places fast. Specifically; south.


Funnily enough, we're now in a position to stay within the law - our monk wants to use Air Render instead of punching, and Nofilia's busy patching everything up.

But though they rage against the dying of the light, their inability to let sleeping dogs lie costs them.


(Like, literally - the brown medusa has an ability that tries to set the entire battle to sleep, but they kept waking my guys up.)

In practice - the race depends on month, and it's early autumn so that's viera, and the questions lead to different classes. Liking swords, stealth, dieting and friendship gives...




RIGHT, OKAY THEN. Apparently our little clan isn't ~good~ enough for snipers to deign to associate with us. Which... is fair, I guess, but annoying, because I mean... look at all those AP I passed up on because I didn't think I'd need them!




He does offer another candidate, but Pastelle isn't the consolation prize I'm looking for.

Interestingly, going back to the Ursla savestate, rejecting her and going through the quiz again still gives me a Kikka with the same stats. And, yes, going for a different class still gives someone with the same name.
