I think it was a combination of a lot of things, but advertising was likely at the heart of it. While the first-party games were almost always great, it was hard to find good third-party support for the console, and Nintendo's attempts to market it were... not what I'd call successful. When people assume that your new console is just some overpriced add-on for the Wii because of its name, then something definitely did not work out right. That said, I enjoy my Wii U enough to not feel the need to buy a Switch yet, so I don't think it's the console itself that was really the problem. She's a cool character and warrior on the good guys side, but Spoiler long story short, complicated situations resulted in her basically becoming a female version of Camus, one of my favorites from Fire Emblem.
