Angelcynn: 12 things you (probably) don't know about Emmet

So, Emmet, my first proper rpg character has just bit the dust. Wasn't exactly sure how this whole thing would pan out when I first joined but I've come to be very satisfied with Emmet's role in the story and hope my next character can match it. He got to be present for important things, interact in interesting ways with a variety of other characters and keep the story moving in unexpected directions. All without ever overstepping my bounds (I believe). But alas when these things happen there's still some stuff you have canon in your head that just don't quite get out there. So here's twelve things you (may) not have known about Emmet.

1. Looking at the initial signup bios for some characters you can see some hilarious disparity between what they were intended to be and what they turned out. This is not true of Emmet. From conception and throughout he had pretty much the same personality. I was intending to hide his sociopathy a little longer, I think it might have came out of nowhere for some people but there were some definite hints to it early on.

2. Despite the vial being such a huge part of his character arc, I did not create him with it in mind. Shin just gave me cursory information about it not long before making my first post. I'm very glad he was introduced into that plot immediately though because I think it gave him a lot more focus as a character. Without it I reckon he would have been a pretty boring since a general apathy for other human beings isn't all that interesting.

3.The reason I decided to make a sociopath was to intentionally create something that doesn't fit neatly onto the D&D style alignment scale. You know the whole Chaotic-Lawful Good-Evil thing. Emmet is generally meant to be an outwardly nice and law abiding guy since he's logical enough to understand following the rules keeps you out of trouble. Yet at the same time he'd totally disregard rules and authority without any guilty conscience if he had reason to (which ultimately became the death of him). Likewise, knowing that people help others that are kind to him, he does not turn down opportunities to be generous but would also kill a friend without remorse.

4.His odd class of mage archer was not actually inspired by Thracia' Ronan at all. It came about from me reading the notes on Raewald (the country I decided I wanted my character to be from) and seeing that they specialise in both magic and archery. I said why not do both? The combination of bows and staves was also not inspired by the Adventurer class from Fates. The game had not been released in Europe back then and I'd kept away from pretty much all prerelease info.

5. Emmet is both an asexual and a virgin. One humorous quote I was considering if he died in less than dramatic circumstances would be him bemoaning that he never took the opportunity to find out what all the fuss about sex is.

6. Emmet's surname, Dun, is a type of dullish brown. This was an intentional reference to Emmett Brown, better known as Doc from Back to the Future. I was planning on making all of his family members share this pun (if you can call it that) by naming them after famous people and characters that have the surname Brown, like Charlie and Lavender.

7.Emmet's history as a monk might seem at odds with his personality, and that's mainly because I threw it in because I needed a justification for him to know how to use staves. However I did make it an aspect of his lifestyle even if it didn't affect much of his personality. Several references are made to him meditating and he does a weekly fast. He believed Engel and Belial were probably real but he didn't see much use in actively worshipping either them after he quit the monastery.

8.Self descriptions are something I tend to shy away from with characters since people don't generally describe what they look like under normal circumstances. So something that's not apparent is that Emmet actually has rather long hair. We're talking down to the small of the back. However because he's an archer, he keeps it tucked away under his cloak pretty much permanently. If he went through with ordaining the wedding, I was going to have him shave the top of his head monk style but leave the rest of it long on the edges. This would have looked incredibly ridiculous and would have been a decision he immediately regretted and lead him to keeping his hood up for pretty much the rest of the series. Unfortunately it never came to pass. Alas such is life.

9.Emmet's 0% Luck stat growth came about because he was a hybrid character.  I needed him to excel in both physical attack and magical attack as well as have some survivability (if ever he died during gameplay I was planning on keeping him dead unless there was suitably justifiable plot reasons for him to survive). This required some stat to take a major hit and it just so happened to be luck. I was completely unaware that luck isn't a dump stat in Angelcynn. Still though, don't regret the decision since it lead to a pretty hilarious character build.

10. Emmet makes a few references to having been part of less fortunate mercenary groups in the past. He also shows quite a bit of surprise after each battle when he discovers everyone survived. Apparently before joining the Reliants, the battles Emmet fought in weren't guided by the hand of fate meaning people actually died on the winning side. In many ways it's good to be a Fire Emblem (inspired) character!

11. Planned skills upon promotion: Hit +10, Avo +10, Extra Weapon (Tomes), Bizarre Bonus. Hadn't quite made up my mind whether I wanted to go with Shintastic or Oddball. The fact that Pinaka!Physical was almost never a preferable option kind of made me want to increase his strength. Due to unforeseen circumstances however, I no longer need to make that choice.

12.Emmet desired immortality because in spite of what it might seem, he was an immensely happy person. His apathetic nature meant he faced little hardships in life (at least from his perspective. More than once he was on the verge of starving and had to depend on his hunting skills to survive). He could derive pleasure from pretty simple aspects of life and failed to understand why anyone wouldn't want to extend their life as long as possible. Rest in peace you heartless monster you

Rest in peace, Emmet o7

I didn't get to interact much with him aside from his final hours, but I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out. In the end, he turned out to contribute to Owen's struggle between trying to be an altruistic leader and having agency and results.

So long you crazy dog.
