What do the coins do?

Apparently, among the things you can transfer between Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, the near-worthless Coins are one of them. Do they do anything besides take up a spot in your inventory and can be sold for a whole one gold? (Selling money for money never made sense to me.)

for forging

If you give a coin to Jeorge after forging, you have access to a card shuffle to get a boost for the forged weapon in might, accuracy or crit or even multiple parameters or more coins. You can also get a blanket card. It doesn't matter which card you pick. The result will be always the same.

I don't know if this mechanic is in FE9 (if it was never intended to be in, then there's more evidence for an intended duology).

Also, I think when you're selling a coin, you're just dropping it in the pile with the other coins to be spent. As for why only some coins can be used for Forging... er...
