Would an "Alchemist" Class Work?

It's just a random little thought that popped up in my head. An Alchemist in theory would be someone that uses potions offensively and to support their allies (i.e. Ninian's dance boosts while also capable of attacking from 2 ranges).

Right now it sounds a little broken so could I get some thoughts on the idea?

I'm no professional with things like game balancing but an alchemist class could be potentially interesting. Maybe they'd not only be able to use potentially more effectively but they could also make their own potions that do different stuff...maybe?

The concept of a class that uses one-shot items instead of weapons is a pretty neat idea. Maybe they could promote to "Saboteur", with a specific emphasis on bending the rules of the game through special items. 

I don't think it would be too broken. Most potions only have 1-3 uses before they break anyway. I would give them a backup weapon though, potentially tomes or knives.

Thanks for the input guys, I might actually look into making it a reality in my spare time. My question to anyone still interested, how do you think potions should work weapon triangle wise? Should it be "outside" of it or grouped in with weapon type?

No weapon triangle position, please. I think the fact that IS has to put everything in the triangle somewhere is kind of overkill. I liked having arrows and such be neutral, and oftentimes, weapon triangle advantages don't really make much of a difference. 

One idea I had that could pertain to this class: Remember the Light Rune from FE7? What if that was a skill a certain class learned? Seems like something an alchemist could do.

They may have specific potions that have the advantage against a specific weapon type. Like an anti-sword potion that works like a lance or an anti-light potion that works like an anima tome.
