Got a source for that 250000 figure? If it was that small, I doubt any of Awakenings developers would be expressing their concerns as gravely as they do in every interview that mentions awakening. They were seriously convinced it was the last game, and they would get outsold by Thraccia?

Considering how Japan-centric Japanese culture is, they likely meant that number in Japan alone.

Regardless, if it wasn't something they were seriously worried about they wouldn't constantly mention it so gravely. This heavily implies that they thought the series would be over after Awakening when it, in fact, made the series able to rub elbows with the likes of Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon as one of Nintendo's Top 5 series.

As such, whether you like the game or not is irrelevant, you can not just sweep this achievement under the rug due to that. It's highly likely that without Awakening, and Fates, we likely wouldn't even have FE Warriors nor even FE Heroes for that matter.

NME sold 3,000 short of that mark.
With everything we know, it seems like the devs were just paranoid.

And as I said, "FE certainly wouldn't be as big as it is today."

3,000 short can still be quite a bit and the worry was still there. If they were worried about it then it's likely this wasn't a one-time thing, don't downplay it.

The only games to sell sub-250k in Japan are Thracia 776 (because it was a SNES game released right before the Gamecube) and the Radiant Duelogy, which were around 170k each (with the Radiant Duelogy both selling around half a million world wide).

Everything we have points towards IS just being strangely paranoid. 250,000 was a very achievable goal-- people make too much out of it.
