I started playing about two months ago.  I've summoned 10 5s, got 2 freebies (B! Lyn and disappointing ol' Clive), and promoted 3 (5-star Gordin existed for maybe 30 seconds before being placed on the metaphorical altar of sacrifice for B! Lyn.)

I've had a good string of luck lately.  I've summoned 3 of the Brave Heroes, plus Ephraim with my free summon.

Despite making an exception for Reinhardt, I've been trying to avoid upgrading units who can be pulled in the 5* summon pool. But I've been running out of other characters I want to upgrade, and Hinoka finally making it feasible to set up a blade flier made it hard to argue with upgrading Caeda. Plus, by now, 20k feathers isn't an enormous sum anymore, so the possibility of risking a redundant upgrade no longer feels very concerning.

If you end up pulling 5*s of units that you've upgraded, you can always merge them. There's no real harm in it either way.
