It's a comparable number of textboxes to FFT for sure, just they fit a hell of a lot less words in them and they don't tend to draw out mid-battle convos.

It's still an issue, same with the propernoun spam.

Got reassigned to the Loeher kid. Doesn't really make much material difference, apart from no longer having to be stuck with the other kid.

Came with the priest and a couple squires. Five dudes. Great. My first mission and I'm probably going to die in a fuckin' ditch on some island I've never heard of. You know, if the fuckin' storm wasn't enough.

So Loeher at least can count. Informs the group that he's gonna go see if he can rouse some local support at least. Comes back and apologises that we don't have the money to spare on a fucking squid.

This guy.

And this other chick who keeps winking at me but more like flirtily than just sort of as A Thing like I reckon the first chick does.

This is the deployment screen, by the way. Fancy that, we can actually see the fucking map and deploy accordingly! Unlike FFT or, to be even-handed, LUCT. And we can go back to the organisation screen, too. Ivana's a guest - eight will basically (maybe even literally) always be the deployment limit.

This is Cressida, our first generic archer. Archers, as a class, are trash. They're slightly faster, dumber and squishier than soldiers.

Incidentally, note the half-submerged guy and the... sock. These indicate jump height and movement type. Archers are reasonably nimble on land and wade, so aren't totally fucked in water. Ninjas like Lechies are acrobatic, so jump well, and walk perfectly fine on water. Wizards can't jump for shit, and most classes just drown in water and fight like utter garbage.

71d9004fdebd57557b65e215fb6c2907.png
The topknot is Lechies. She just hurled shuriken for skirmish levels of damage at that range, for free.

Ninjas are really great, especially earlygame.

More tutorials! You can persuade enemies in this game - in fact, you're really encouraged to. Of course, in true Pokemon style, you want to water their health down liberally, too. Related classes tend to be better at recruiting each other. Swordmasters, the elite light infantry, easily recruit ninjas, the decent light infantry, and trivially recruit archers, the garbage light infantry. Knights easily recruit soldiers. Each class can usually recruit itself decently enough. Et cetera.

Ninjas are also amateur nerds.

It's a shame that brigands aren't recruitable, they're pretty hard-hitting. Relatively.

695853dbdc2f5da1ad15876e0a9f1214.png
I mean, compare that to Cressida, who only now has deigned to join the fight. So who's our heaviest hitter right now?

13318df19509ddd03d85894d26506c37.png
Our favourite totally ordinary human, Deneb.

2e7f94fffe7488196a72685fe1d5cfbb.png
I feel as though this bears explanation. So basically when I blew all my cash on dudes, unnecessarily, I realised I had no gear for them. So I went into a random battle. Deneb, who mostly sought to recruit someone (and did, a level 1 man called Yoshi) went unarmed, and at the end of the second battle there was this archer left with 1 HP. And Deneb was right there. So she decked and killed her.

Some seeds are sown for Neutral Sand Boy Arbitrator Alphonse and he lets in some silver haired lady. Seems legit.

Look, birbmen! (I actually really like birdmen in this and LUCT, they have saved my ass more than a few times)

Ah yes, back when I first I saw this, I didn't actually had a proper reaction to the fact we can hire octopuses! Then again, I was like... 9 or so. Even the hawkmen I could so-so understand for a fantasy setting... but an octopus? It was new to me back then. I think I actually hired one, out of curiosity.

Ivanna proves that a team of 8 Knights in the ultimate team as far as KoL is concerned.

It's kinda a shame that literally everyone in KoL is a better archer than the class literally named Archer. I get they were kinda overpowered in LUCT but in KoL there's literally no reason to use them over just giving your Bows to Hawkmen.

So how does it all work? There are stats, there are classes, there are emblems (awarded for doing some non-straightforward stuff, I guess?), there definitely are abilities, there are items, there is attack range. Wow, so difficult.

Yeah, I figured it'd clog things up too much explaining things bit-by-bit, but if there's anything in particular you'd like explained feel free to ask.

Also I know updates have just been once every couple of days. Blame Echoes, unironically. Normally I make fun of people for their update schedule being interrupted by newly-released video games! Not today. Blame Echoes.

Don't know, never quite finished it.

Broadly speaking, no - not even in the sort of Fire Emblem Talk To Boi Together We Ride Starts Playing sense. Generics only.

is recruiting bois still largely a matter of 'keep x alive and hope that they decide they like you' like in TO PSX / LUCT?

actually I guess we'll find out

There's some emblem that changes your ability to recruit character. If a unit persuade 5 ennemies, they get a persuasion bonus, but if you kill 5 Beast/Dragon, you become less good at persuading them.

And Beast/Dragon Tamer still exists.

If those guides in Gamefaqs are right, the named Archer may actually be worse than a generic (Something to do with luck modifying growths...)

Grimal, despite being a hilarious jobber (as aforementioned), is still kind of a big deal, so attacking him head-on is a non-starter. Ideally we'd have a nerd to crush him but, well...

One of the annoying things about archery in TO is that the displayed squares bear no relevance to actual bowrange, which is affected massively by height. In LUCT there's a must-have skill which actually tells you what trajectory a fired arrow will have. In KoL... you just kind of have to guess. Or, worse, use maths.

The west's secure - it's just mop-up now. Lechies is like our one reliable damage source against Grimal, so she's up.

Er... nothing, if it would take him onto unusable terrain, which I should've checked.

Bye, Grimal. You'll be remembered.

I guess.

I mean if nothing else he drops his chainmail.

Night falls.

I really appreciate how in LUCT, 'void'/'bottomless pit' tiles were not actually unusable terrain, and instead just instantly killed you if you were unfortunate enough to be shoved off into one.

Yeah, I figured it'd clog things up too much explaining things bit-by-bit, but if there's anything in particular you'd like explained feel free to ask.

Yeah, I get it, but what I really enjoyed in Artix’s FE7 and FE6 and Fedule’s FE9 and FE10 LPs (among many others!) is that they took some time to explain the underlying mechanical stuff, like, what numbers go where, how secondary stats are calculated, and stuff like that. It made my FE experience much more enjoyable once I actually understood why and how everything works.

For example, let’s take this image:

9e29726a2eea1d2245d8031a6b56dbea.png

Why is the unit on the left going to deal 19 pts of damage to the unit on the right? The aggressor seems to have 78 attack rating (or something) and 41 defence rating versus 91 attack rating and 91 defence rating. The defender is going to deal 59 pts of damage with an accuracy of 64%. Now I get that the defender’s attack is much higher than the attacker’s defence (and the defender’s defence higher than the attacker’s attack) but the details are beyond me.

Also, why some units have a SP gauge and some have a MP gauge?

Etc., etc.

The maths in Fire Emblem are really easy. The maths in Tactics Ogre are incredibly opaque and I don't understand them at all. And as far as I know, SP and MP are mechanically identical.

Okay then, it’s better to just relax and enjoy the ride without addling my head with difficult calculations. I’m not that good at maths anyway.
