For the record, those values aren't for Defense. Don't remember the ones with the staves, but the sword icons are actually for Slashing and Thrusting damage. At the very least, weapons are classified as either of the two types, so I don't quite remember if they actually have two different stats. As for an actual Defense stat... well, there's both Physical Defense and Physical Resistance. Yeah...

There is a different between SP and MP other than flavor. You can't recover SP from items.

According to old GameFaqs guides, the forecast shows an estimation of your luck and byorithm. Each characters have is own curve (Kinda like RD Biorythm, except far more complicated and not actually shown...). It also influence hidden items you get.

It seems to also influence growths in some way and can explain why Olson can be worse than a regular archer.

Helpfully, when hiring people, you can decide to hire them at a higher level - though it's a bit more expensive, as it should be. Trifon's still probably going to be the last dude I hire, though.

So the earlygame is mostly a matter of just praying for the day when people can reach tier 1 classes - ninja is often the first. Since Alphonse's stats are like 10 in everything higher than anyone else, he qualifies for almost everything but knight.

92d37083b0ac17909001d21e90350858.png
How to qualify for a class? All this shit. Classes have alignment requirements - though perhaps it's more accurate to say restrictions, since apart from two ~special~ classes that are Very Endgame, every class can be neutral. Shit like knights and priests are L/N, mages are N or C, ninjas and a lot of others don't care. Knight's Certificate is an emblem you just sort of get ambiently - rewarding attacking chivalrously, you need to attack from the front or side (or possibly 'be counterattacked') fifteen times.

It's a good thing that we're training and so the gigantic fall off a dam is nonfatal! Sadly, it doesn't give Alphonse actual kill credit, UT1999-style.

0fe9b5dd7fd00c796b740ebe67fceb69.png
Now a nerd, Lechies has access to stronger magic than just the basic attack spell. The tier two attack spells hit for 100% accuracy and, eventually, in a small area of effect.

Is turning a ninja into a wizard a good idea?

I mean, magic is good, but the next chapter involves water that only ninjas can walk on.

Ninjas are amazing but having guys enter different classes helps growths go in the right direction long-term and helps the audience differentiate between units in the short-term. The sooner I have eight different sprites on the field, the clearer the fighting is. But, yes, from a gamesmanship perspective you want ninjas on water maps.

Which makes the hiring of a second birdsman confusing but whatever.

The Tactics Ogre series has always interested me, but I never really got into it.

I remember seeing a feature on Knight of Lodis in Nintendo Power magazine back when it was released and the game looked fascinating to me, but I never did end up getting it. It seemed like a game I would like but I somehow never played it.

It seems quite complex with a lot of different mechanics at play.

So what are these emblem things? Are they sort of like badges in Paper Mario that can give you new abilities, stats, or other neat effects?

Well, given that FFT is garbage

What?! I found FFT to be absolutely brilliant.

At its best, the combat was probably the most fun I had in any SRPG, I loved the skill/class systems and building characters and teams and putting together all kinds of fun combos, I loved how the dialogue was written in old-fashioned style speech, and the story was mind-blowing with some of its ideas and twists.

Though at its worst, the fights could be extremely frustrating (that 1v1 fight I was not ready for and had to go back and spend hours learning skills for, a fight where my medic was berserked and then every single party member was inflicted with status conditions...), and the story could be confusing to the point where I couldn't follow.

To be fair, I never did finish it, but I have a tendency to stop playing games for weeks in busy periods in my life and then not be able to get back into them even if I really liked them.

Anyway, I don't mean to derail this thread too much. I'm sure your reasoning is laid out in your LP of that game, and I probably should finish FFT before arguing in its defense. Someday.

Is there a special reason you're making one of your ladies a Dragon Tamer? I was under the impression the Tamers in this game were kinda awful.

Like I said, they're an individual achievement system. Some give buffs, some give penalties, some are required to unlock certain classes.

It is. So read the LP and argue about it in that thread instead.

Mediocre fighters for sure, but it's all she can be at the moment and it's at least strictly better than soldier.

Welcome to this shitty lake in the middle of nowhere. This is basically a random battle.

85dee851bdbd4a3291843d393268896c.png
Cybil's a guest here, with insanely high intelligence and really good gear. She's level 6 - just like our enemies - which is way higher than any of us.

Despite the level advantage, and the flight, they're not much worth in a fight. The fairies plink for single-digit damage and are a liability - the hawkmen and griffons are fine, but there aren't enough of them. Hawkmen, incidentally, have a 'preferred weapon' of hammers, but mine are by now both outfitted as archers.

15339c944cd349fa84dacda1f0905259.png
May as well use this random-encounter-in-name-only to explain that, too. Every class can use all equipment, but they all (except soldier) have a preferred weapon that they're better with. I don't know the maths involved. Tactics Ogre does not like you to know maths. Units using their preferred weapons do a little flourish with them before attacking with them.

The entire fight is basically just a matter of 'stay on the high ground and don't let them suck you into the water', where you fight ineffectively. The only exception you have right now - unless you bought an octopus for some reason - are ninjas, who can walk just fine on water. Doesn't stop Allos from getting his kill, of course, but...

So this sums it up pretty well. Cybil's hunting for weapons for the Pope to seize power, and 'big spear that explodes people into lightbeams' fits the bill.

Cybil, uh, lapsing a bit into fanaticism there. In any case we're in her debt - we're kind of her thugs, right now.

But, let's be real - stopping this weapon from getting into Naris' hands? That's a pretty good cause.

And off he goes - and that's a fairly sound plan. Help these guys to get a boat while pegging back Naris' dudes at the same time. Shiven runs off instead of teleporting this time. But just in case you were starting to cozy up to Cybil...

She more or less warns us against that. And then starts to walk off and stops for the Parthian shot - again.

And keep in mind - the voting for Canon vs. Non-Canon is still very close, and still ongoing.

And if you don't really care for that angle, then vote on this, instead: how much do you trust Cybil?

(Again, no spoilers, thread.)

I forgot to add Grimal. I hope he doesn't bring sixty friends with him.

I don’t trust Cybil—I can’t trust anybody—but making a Pope-man more Pope-manly sounds fun. No idea how canon it is, though.

Also, these griffins are too cute. That’s all I have to say about that.

not a lot. tbh. But at least she did save Alphonse, but she might just be using him.

Also, would have been a good idea to get a griffin and fairy on your side, but okay.

I never trust clerics/church people in games, especially ones who conquer shit to spread their religion around. Nothing good comes from them.

The experience treadmill is annoying enough already without more dead weight around. As far as gryphons go, I was a little surprised to find there wasn't room for a little gimmicky beastsquad in a squad of 20ish units across the game, but, well, there isn't - and faeries are rubbish.

Why yes I would totally trust a woman who has sublime magical powers and would want me to mingle with mermaids just so I can grab a spear that can make the Pope almighty. Because that always turns out well. ' 3' (the answer is "no, don't trust")

voting for canon.

Also I heard that the roster was a problem? I thought it was 7 generics +17 specials for the full roster of 24. Did I miss the recruitment episode or is there some other reason why we are already out of room for more birds.

Like I said, I don't want to juggle more units on the experience treadmill, which we are already behind on, than I need to. I don't usually like monster units in TRPGs anyway, since they aren't really modular at all.

I would stick to voting for the canon/non-canon angle, which is still Canon, by the way.

I've read too much fiction and real life stuff to trust my judgement on something like "Do I trust X?" Which means it applies to myself as well, essentially.
