Tips for FE4

Use all your mounted units--canto is absolutely busted in this game.

Expect the bulk of your footmen to disappoint you.

Be aware that trading and inventory in this game is kinda wonky. Every character maintains separate gold and inventory; the only way to "trade" is to have one unit sell their items to the pawn shop at one of your castles and then another unit buy it with their own gold, which is a bit of a pain and can be cost-prohibitive with some of the more expensive items.

So when you kill an enemy with a droppable item, take great care to try and kill it with a unit that can actually use said item. Lest you get a mage ring on a bow knight, or something stupid.

Look up a pair up guide and make sure every girl has gotten some nice dick before chapter 5 for reasons...

Don't do this, it's entirely unnecessary and only spoils your first playthrough. As you probably know there's a marriage system in the game, but the game is plenty beatable without optimal pairings, so for your first playthrough go with the couples that look the cutest to you.

Use a guide for the secret events, they net you some incredibly potent items that you otherwise will never get.

Check you units' profile after and before seizing every castle to spot possible talk conversations, it's easy to forget and miss them and there's no reason to. Maybe check lover conversations so that you don't do the ones for the couples you don't want.

Make heavy use of cavalry units, especially in Ch.2, there's a certain village in that chapter with a very good reward, but it's difficult to get it on your first playthrough.

And most importantly, have fun! (FE4 is still a relatively easy game with quite a few overpowered units)

Clear out as much of the arena as you can with each character at the beginning of each chapter that you start in a castle, it's a nice place to get EXP and gold for each dude and they don't die if they lose a battle, but they do get dropped to 1 HP. Oh, and when someone wins an arena match they're fully healed. You don't need to clear out the arena fully with everyone, but most dudes can clear out the first few matches and that's good enough for them.

Don't blow off dudes at first glance, certain characters only need one or two resources to unlock their full potential and contribute well.

You can also save at the beginning of each turn, but do keep a save at the beginning of the chapter or whatever so you don't end up trapping yourself. The auto-save feature is nice for this, as it gives you a prompt to save at the start of each turn.

Always keep a Return staff on hand for situations where someone needs to head back to base pronto.

Promotions don't reset levels, all characters cap level at 30, so don't feel like giving your Duke Knight or whatever some experience is a waste because they're already promoted.

it is a waste tho because he leaves in chapter 4

I think my best advice is use everyone. There's nobody in FE4 who's truly that bad, and you have no deployment limits! The only time you'll be shooting yourself in the foot is if you don't train people.

This advice is only relevant until you get a bunch of OP weapons though. You can still use your other characters but the holy blood guys really do own.
