What;s your favorite and least favorite character(s)?

I'd certainly agree that the game can be a teensy bit sexist. The vast majority of females are encountered as damsels in distress. A sign of its age I guess.

I notice that one but it doesn't really bother me. Matilda's ending on the other hand does bother me. It seems out of character for such a fierce character to just resign for her husband.

I absolutely agree on the sentiment that most female characters got shafted in their respective endings, as apparently none of them - 'cept Silque and Sonya, the latter of which either dies by your hand or becomes a monster - can live without some dude.
In one glaring case it didn't even make a lick of sense in the context of their character *coughcoughFayeunconvincingcough*
It also bothered me that the marriage thing seems to be the only thing that matters in their endings, like, what the hell happened to Genny's story she wanted to publish?
And then there's the Clair x Gray thing... a can of worms I'd rather not open right now.
The Whitewings also got the shaft in that regard, I think. Catria is the original Cordelia / Faye, Est hooked up with a lolicon and Palla is basically Catria, but for Abel instead of Marth.

On the other hand, Saber's mystery spouse also comes completely out of nowhere and apparently, Boey is a giant masochist or sadist, depending on how you want to interpret his relationship with Mae.

Yeah, some of the character endings were definitely a stain on an otherwise great game.

Clair and Grey married each other in the original Gaiden. In fact, all of the endings were just expanded upon from the original Gaiden.

There are some characters I really loved in Echoes, some that I wish we had a little more story to and some that I don't hate necessary but I wish they'd do something to make them a little better.

Favorites

Boey- I absolutely loved his character.  He's so goofy and I found myself laughing to myself or smiling every time he came on screen.  In his support with Mae it showed how caring for those he cares about and while I wish he had more than one support, he was important enough to the story that he had some screentime to actually show his character.

Mahtilda- I loved that we finally got an amazing strong female warrior who is not afraid to speak her mind, is stronger than most men and gets a sweet love story that does not take away from her character at all.  Her supports with Clive make me love her even more.  While her ending threw me off for a bit, I think it fits her in a way. She loves Clive so much that she is willing to give up fighting for him.

Leon- I love the way they decided to tackle his sexuality and did not simply use the cliche gay guy in media gag.   He cares about Valbar feels and understands that he does not like him in the same way. He does not push himself ontop of Valbar and try to make him love him,  rather he simply accepts it and I find that great in a character.  I've been in a situation where I've been the one with a unrequited crush and I think its great that he is able to accept his feelings aren't returned and go on with life.

Gray- His witty sarcastic humour is one of the things that male him great.  He's not one who takeslife super seriously and its able to make the best out if a bad situation and is simply happy to be alive.

Ones I wish had more story

Genny- Unless you recruit Sonia,  which I didn't because I went into the game spoiler free and thought both her and Deen were available, she has no supports whatsoever. From the bits I saw of her character she was an adorable little author but I got literally nothing about her besides that. I wishshe could have supported with Boey, Mae, Celica someone!

Silque- Her only support was with Faye and the support was completely trash.  I got literally nothing from it except Silque wanted a female friend to talk to and Faye was a jerk and didn't want to be around because she wasn't Alm.  That is a complete waste of a Silque's only support. It would be different if you weren't going to use her a lot but unless you promote Faye to a Cleric she is the only healer you get until late with Tatiana.

Luthier- I would have loved a support between him and anyone else in the army.  It would have been something to show his socially awkward side and would honestly help him grow and be more than a shadow to his sister and honestly it would be hilarious.

Characters that need some work

Faye- Now I don't mind characters with a unrequited crush but Faye does not ever grow from it.  She steps all over people just for Alm. She gets married and still obsesses over Alm. I don't think I could handle being in relationship with someone like that let alone married to them.  She's just a bit too much for me.

Honestly I didn't have a problem with any of the other characters except the lack of supports for these characters with 1 or 0 supports.

All characters here are pretty good. I can't cherry pick them all but here are some that I adore and some that I'm least bothered.

Favourite characters:

1.Tobin

This dude is pretty awesome and I love him. His interactions between him and Gray are some of the best during story wise and he is one of the characters that goes through development. Sure, its pretty jarring at times such as how he can talk about Clair before Clair even shows up but the support itself is cool that it doesn't really matter. It also helps that his character design is pretty cool too and he's got some of the best quotes in the entire game such as "Man look at these muscles! Who wants to touch them?"

As a unit, dude's awesome as his high skill growth means he'll be perfect as an archer and is one of the few candidates best suited for the lighting sword.

2.Camus/Zeke

Another awesome guy. Honestly, I didn't think that Camus would be this awesome until Echoes showed up. Has the best voice in the entire game, awesome character design and is righteous at best.

He's even a good unit..I mean, Gold Knights are a thing in this game so yeah. I will say that it does feel natural for him to hold the Gradivus.

3.Kliff

While the guy doesn't socialise much besides talking with Tobin, I like his character design a lot. But what makes him really good is how flexible he is. Dude can work wonders with any class you change him to and its because of this that he gets my vote.

4.Matilda:

Well, she's my waifu so that's something. Jokes aside, her character design is great and she's also great as a unit so you can't go wrong using her.

Least favourite:

1. Faye: Yeah, Faye gets a lot of hate bandwagon and its no surprise why considering that her personality is even worse than Camilla, she can't work out on any class except cleric and to top it off, she doesn't contribute enough to the plot almost being barren like Kliff.

2. Celica: Now let's get this out of the way, I'm not bashing her as a unit because she's fine for what she does. But as a character....its a different story.

Spoiler

She makes a lot of decisions that are just questionable or that are just pointless to even do to begin with. Her leaving Alm all of a sudden because she wanted peace in her way was just being on the naive side. She never cried or even hugged her brother Conrad(admittedly its a remake and not the original but still) in the slightest and her intentions of keeping things secret until the very end was really dumb of her to do. It also doesn't help that she knew that it was going to come to this and yet her efforts into trying to fix it were lame. Again, has nothing to do with the unit.

I like everyone except Faye and Deen. Its just easier to put it that way, cuz i really do enjoy just about everyone but those two. I particularly like Luthier, Mathilda, Celica, Mae, Clive, and Sonya.

"But why Clive?" Cuz my first run had him be really blessed and an actual asset to my team. Plus im fine with his character.

I dont like Faye for reasons i already talked about on hese threads. Shes nasty, one note, and stuplidly passive aggressive. I think id be more indifferent to her had it not been for the shitty attitude she takes with Silque, and what she says to Alm after his row with Celica. Yikes.

Deen is just boring edgelord. Even his design is meh. I got him once just so i could get him, and welp...getting Sonya forever now.

Like a lot of people, I think SoV did great with its character writing, since everyone here is at least passable if not likable for one reason or another, which I can't really say for more recent FE games (Tellius series has Ilyana, Awakening has Tharja, Fates has goddamn Peri and Camilla, etc.) One strength of the character writing in this game is that they managed to do an "obsessed with main character's affections" character and not have it be painful and pandering, since I found Faye pretty inoffensive for the most part, even if she's not exactly a strong or well-written character.

Favorites though:

Gonna definitely have to say that Gray and Boey are my favorite characters. Gray just because of his sheer wit, making me laugh, and how well they did the foil humor between him and Tobin, without having to dip down into any cartoonish/wacky antics like FE13 and FE14 often did. Boey was fun as a middle-of-the-road cautious straight man to Mae.

Alm is a good one for me, just because he strikes me as just so relatable and sweet. He's an average young man in terms of background, relaxed and kind enough to be sweet, earnest and well-meaning, but not passive enough not to stand up for what he thinks is right, like calling out Clive for his casual classism. A nice middle ground in comparison to Marth and Eirika being a little bit bleeding heart with their naivete, and Ike being so ridiculously stoic that he kind of loses all character in RD.

To throw everyone a curveball, I really like Berkut and Fernand.

Berkut struck me with his calm, collected but forceful and intelligent personality during his first appearance, which I find refreshing, since a lot of FE villains are either one-note assholes for the sake of being assholes, joke villains that are completely ineffective, or over the top in terms of behavior for comedy. His love for Rinea is great too, and I love it when villains are given redeeming qualities. He has integrity and dimension. The fact that we get a fair amount of character development out of him doesn't hurt, and despite thinking his plot was well done, I wish we could have had him playable like he was likely intended to be, even if for my own selfish reasons, lol.

Fernand I like for what I call the Shinon effect -- a character on the good guys' side (at least initially for Fernand) that doesn't automatically fall to worshiping the main character just because they're the main character. Fernand is well-written in that I can believe him -- he's clasisst as hell, and a little bit arrogant, but he's not evil or anything. He has standards, and his close relationship with Clive and Clair did flesh him out a fair amount. He's a dick, but he's a believable and well-written one.

Echoes has a lot of characters that I really enjoyed and while there were some characters who could've been better, there isn't one who is bad in my eyes.

Favorite:

Alm: I found him to be really likable and he's currently one of my top lords.

Characters I liked:

Spoiler

Saber: I surprisingly really enjoyed him. He was quite powerful, and while his character began simple (just the average, strong mercenary) I liked how he seemed suspicious of Celica, and you could see that despite blowing some things off, he was always questioning what her true purpose and identity was.

Catria: My second favorite in this game, after Lukas. She was immensely powerful, especially with her Angel Ring, and early in the game she was almost always getting critical. Her voice was also good, making her seem deadpan and serious.

Lukas: Favorite in terms of character and personality. I found it interesting that he was very cold and calculating, yet was on the good side. Moreover, it is usually expected that characters like him are mages or otherwise some sort of magic class, yet he was a soldier/knight.

Berkut: The best villain of the game, and probably one of the best in the series. He begins slightly basic (I'm royalty; I'm better than you) but slowly descends into madness after losing to Alm numerous times. It shows character development - something that is commonly forgotten for the villains in fiction, but is immensely important.\

Conrad: Didn't expect to enjoy him but I liked his calm demeanor and general bearing.

Clair: A snobby noble without the snob. She was powerful (I think Pegasus Knights were OP in this game) and I liked her personality.

Characters I didn't:

Spoiler

Mathilda: I understand that a lot of people like her, but... I didn't. Her character was boring (she was basically attached to Clive the entire time) and she was never really powerful. Well, maybe not not powerful, but her defense was so low even at the endgame that she could only take about three hits before dying.

Clive: Admittedly, he had his moments, but for the most part he was just boring. At least his relationship with the rest of the Deliverance was well done.

Delthea: Very strong unit, she could probably have soloed the entirety of Alm's route, but her personality was bad. I know she was intentionally written like that, but I could never like her character, whether or not it was meant to be.

Favorites:

Python: My definite favorite in the game. I tend to like snarky characters in fiction, and Python is no exception. Most of his dialogue gave me some pretty good laughs, whether it'd be some of those snarky and sarcastic comments he makes or some of his casual dialogue (i.e. his supports with Lukas when Python asks him to delve more into Clive's love life). Though he does a cynical worldview, I still found it interesting to learn, and it was great to see those DLC conversations expand on Python's character and his life perspectives. He can even deliver some pretty sound advice. I also relate to Python's laid-back attitude, specifically how he just lives each day as if he is living in the present without worrying about the future. Him and Forsyth also make my favorite duo in the game. The two really click well together despite their contrasting personalities!

Unit-wise, contrary to what most people say about him, my Python was one of my most reliable units. Perhaps it was because he had an Iron Bow for most of the game and he was RNG blessed, but he never held me down in the long run. He usually landed a hit and even scored a solid number of criticals (one of which was on the boss of that second-to-last map before you fight Rudolph).

Forsyth: I relate to Forsyth in several ways. Back in high school, I was an energetic go-getter just like he was. I'm also very sensitive guy just like him, to the point of taking every word, suggestion, and comment literally. He also has a backstory that I enjoyed learning about: as a child, he wanted to become a soldier while his father wanted him to be a scholar, and when he joined the Deliverance alongside Python, they had a tough getting used to the others due to the rest coming from nobility, but Clive treated the two as equals. Speaking of Python, I also love the dynamic the two have. Forsyth also proved to be one of my best units: he could tank physical units really well, and he could even handle hits from Witches while slaughtering them back.

Conrad: There's no denying his role in the story was lackluster, but as a character on his own, I really like him. The whole "massive dork hiding behind the badass" makes him quite a charming character in my eyes, and he is a sensitive guy just like me. I also like the relationship he has with Celica (far better than Faye to Alm that's for sure), as there were some cute moments that come from that. He even proved to be a really good unit in those final chapters of the game.

Lukas: This guy knows how to stay calm, collected, and polite even when the going gets tough (reminds me of a certain professor from a video game series I really like). What a man! He even ponders whether or not it is okay to remain stoic and strict during war, and the way he admits that to Clive made him feel like a very human character in my eyes. I like his backstory, and he was a solid unit in my playthrough as well. Probably my favorite Lukas moment has to be that scene in the fourth Rise of the Deliverance when he blackmails Slayde. That scene proved what a badass he is.

Tobin: My favorite of the Alm villagers. He's a funny yet honest guy who fights in the army to provide for his family, and his interactions with Gray were gold. I also relate to Tobin's insecurities, especially when it comes to his inferiority complex and the desire to surpass others. He's also a pretty good Bow Knight from my experience using him.

Saber: He. is. badass! Not only is he a kickass Dread Fighter (and definitely the best one out of all the Mercenaries from my experience), but he was quite the enjoyable character with his blunt and honest speech mannerisms while acting like a nice father-figure to Celica.

Mathilda: Best unit in the game (from my playthrough that is). Hits hard, doubles often, and can take hits rather well. Mathilda was also quite the likable character from what we learn of her in her supports, base conversations, and memory prisms. She had an interesting upbringing where she was raised to become a warrior while having doubts every now and then as to whether or not she should continue to do so or become a maiden like other women, but then she stuck with the path of the warrior upon hearing their opinion. Mathilda and Clair also make good sisters-in-law.

Leon: A good unit who was also quite the charming character. He has a sharp yet honest tongue, and the way he adores and looks up to Valbar was quite memorable.

Clair: A teenage girl from nobility while having a curiosity to learn about the outside world and the lives of commoners made her quite compelling in my eyes. Even if she is overbearing at times, she still values the impression she gives onto others and thus does her best to act well. Clair was even a solid Pegasus Knight from my experience using her.

Mae & Boey: Honestly, I like them both equally. Mae's peppy, optimistic, and cheery attitude was fun to watch, and so was some of her dialogue (like that one time when she calls out the "bad guy dies as they are about to reveal something important" cliche). Boey is rather insecure about himself and thus tries to put up a brave act. I also enjoyed his character development where he does his best to overcome his fears and put up a more earnest act. The two characters also make a cute shipping. If I was forced to pick which one I like between the two, I'd pick Boey just because I find him more relatable due to his insecurities.

Honorable mentions (others characters I liked, but not as much as the the top 10):

Gray: Much like Tobin, Gray is a funny yet very honest guy with some great dialogue all-around. He even makes a solid Dread Fighter.

Atlas: As a countryman, Atlas brings some interesting perspectives to Celica's army. His second base conversation where he talks about mountains was cool to listen to IMO, and I had a good laugh in his first base conversation when he talks about his bug encounter that freaks out Celica as a result. He was also a really good Dread Fighter too. His Strength stat was so high he didn't need a sword equipped. A decent shield was all he needed to fix that Defense issue of his.

Sonya: Quite the cool lady with a great backstory that ties into the game's plot. Decent mage too.

Clive: Quite the human character if I do say so myself. Many soldiers praise him as the greatest knight in Zofia, but he admits he is no perfect soldier. He even admits his own flaws with his worldviews, and the way he is willing to learn from commoners was quite memorable too. Clive was far from a good unit, but mine managed to do better than I expected as a Gold Knight. I'll admit that some Speed fountain boosts + some really lucky level ups contributed to this (my Clive had a higher speed than Mathilda as a matter of fact).

Catria: Definitely my favorite of the Pegasus Sisters. She is more quiet compared to her other sisters, but we learn in one of her base conversations that it comes from her standing as a middle child as her other sisters beat her to the punch most of the time. I can relate to that as there are times when my friends beat me to it when it comes to some conversations. Her good offensive stats combined with some nice defensive stats made her a solid Pegasus Knight as well.

Valbar: I really admire how Valbar is able to move on with his life without dwelling too much on the death of his family. He also values repaying debts to others, which reminds me of  a favorite character of mine from Fates who does something similar (Kaden). While Valbar wasn't as effective of a unit in the late-game due to the abundance of Arcansists, he was still very strong in the early game due to his high Defense stats.

Least favorites:

Faye: I like to call Faye the epitome of a badly done romance character. Her feelings for Alm are her only defining trait, said feelings for him reach creepy, obsessive levels that do not sit well with me, she doesn't experience good character development (except for her A-support with Silque), and the reason she developed feelings for Alm in the first place isn't clearly explained. I have a hard time bringing myself to like her, and reading her second and third base conversations really lowered my opinion of her.

Fernand: His reason for leaving the Deliverance and committing treason to align with Rigel was silly. He only does all that because of Alm's rural upbringings. If Fernand's reasons for doing so came from the fact Alm just recently joined the war effort and thus not fit to lead an army because of that, that would make him more tolerable. Fernand also acts like a complete classist for most of the game that he became infuriating. I admit the Rise of the Deliverance DLC definitely helped paint Fernand in a more favorable light, but even then, I still can't bring myself to like him.

Love: (Alm's side)

1. Lukas: He has a great voice a lovable personality, and he looks great to. A regular to my team.

2. Silque: I love her voice, design, and her utility although I wish she had a bit more writing.

3. Forsyth: "I am a Forsyth to be reckoned with" won me over and slowly climbed my favorites ladder.

4. Mathilda: I love strong and determined characters, and I think she is one of the better units although I'm not sure what the community considers it just seemed that way to me.

(Celica's side)

1. Sonya: I love her backstory, her design, her voice, and personality. She's a sexy character done right. I felt bad about her sisters too. The only thing I don't like about her is her ending, I felt she deserved better.

2. Valbar: I love knights and I love characters with a backstory, not that good as a unit later on but I don't mind.

3. Leon: He sassy, cute, and loyal. I only wish Valbar gave him a chance, I was rooting for that pairing.

4. Palla: I liked her before and I love her even more now. That voice is so fitting for her and she is so pretty too, definitely my favorite whitening but I love them all.

Most Hated:

1. Alm: He comes across as too perfect throughout the game but the moment I completely loathed him was near the last parts of the game. I hate it when the other main character (usually a female) has to be written as an idiot and make a huge mistake just to make the hero come across as even more valiant and powerful than he already is. Reminds me of Ephraim's favoritism in SS whom I detest or Ike in Radiant Dawn. I want IS to turn the tables for once.

My favorites:

  • Kliff - Let's just say I like his personality and as a unit, just wow, he has saved Alm's team a lot of times, actually nobody has died thanks to him
  • Delthea - she is funny and powerfull, I like her
  • Luthier - funny too, poor man, I want to be his friend
  • Sonya - I feel bad for her ending, so I'm going to think she has a happy life instead. She has been a good unit for me, and her supports with Genny were cute and good, mama Sonya for Celica's team!
  • Forsyth - Ehhh he is cute haha, also I find him as a good unit, maybe I have been lucky with his lv ups
  • Leon - The killer in Celica's team! Idk why, but 90% of his attacks has been criticals for me. Aside of that, I like how he is into fashion and now he is Oboro's best buddy in my Heroes castle

Least favorite:

  • Jedah counts? Because I really dislike this guy!!
  • I think that's all
