Fire Emblem 4 Echoes Ideas

Now that Shadows of Valentia has been released and has found success in Japan and all over the world, it seems like IS wants to continue the "Echoes" sub-series. For now it seems like they're leaning toward remaking Binding Blade but I can still hope that Genealogy of the Holy War will get a glorious and proper remake. Assuming that a Genealogy Echoes will be released, what kind of things do you want to see in it? I have a few ideas:

  • Lots and lots of animated cut scenes. GotHW has the best story in FE so I would love to see as much of it developed as possible. Side-stories, flashbacks, all that good stuff.
  • Breaks during the chapters. It not news to anyone that the maps are huge and have a lot of empty space, so breaking them up with cut scenes and a camp or something will make the maps less overwhelming.
  • Add the possibility to get ALL holy weapons. Make it so Lex's kids can inherit Helswath and Azel's kids can get Valflame, etc.
  • Return of the Turnwheel mechanic but obviously with some other lore-friendly gimmick
  • More lovers(support) conversations for all the characters
  • Bonus chapters for other scenarios like Ares retaking Agustria
  • Excellent orchestrations of the OST and new music
  • Fully voice acted(or mostly like SoV)
  • Being able to pair Seliph and Julia without a glitch
  • Adapt that sweet, sweet Eldigan arc from the Oosawa manga

That's what I had in mind, anyone have other thoughts? Ideas? I want to know what other people expect for a game like this.

Source?

. Assuming that a Genealogy Echoes will be released, what kind of things do you want to see in it? I have a few ideas:

Subjective, but animated cut scenes would be nice... hell, I would settle for fully voice acted cutscenes if nothing else

  • Breaks during the chapters. It not news to anyone that the maps are huge and have a lot of empty space, so breaking them up with cut scenes and a camp or something will make the maps less overwhelming.

Agreed

  • Add the possibility to get ALL holy weapons. Make it so Lex's kids can inherit Helswath and Azel's kids can get Valflame, etc.

Ehhhhhhh. I don't know about that one.

  • Return of the Turnwheel mechanic but obviously with some other lore-friendly gimmick

Would that be necessary? Considering the fact that you can save in between turns (assuming they keep that)

  • More lovers(support) conversations for all the characters

Agreed

  • Bonus chapters for other scenarios like Ares retaking Agustria

Sure

  • Excellent orchestrations of the OST and new music

Agreed

  • Fully voice acted(or mostly like SoV)

Agreed

  • Being able to pair Seliph and Julia without a glitch

.....you're joking right? Please tell you me are joking?? If not.... that's kind of gross.

  • Adapt that sweet, sweet Eldigan arc from the Oosawa manga

Can't comment because I haven't read the manga.

That's what I had in mind, anyone have other thoughts? Ideas? I want to know what other people expect for a game like this.

A trade system. The pawnshop mechanics were something that I was NOT a fan of in the original game..... I also want a more modern support system as opposed to the automatic "You two are married now!" thing.

I totally agree with the last part, I must have forgotten to consider the trade mechanic. That definitely NEEDS to be in the remake. And as for supports, I agree as well, the standard C to A or S works just fine, it also gives the opportunity for more non-romantic supports too.

You make a good point about the save mechanic, but I think it would make sense for the ability to save anywhere to be replaced with the Turnwheel, that way you can't totally abuse the save mechanic.

And no, not joking about the Seliph and Julia thing, lol. It's FE4, the whole game is practically about that stuff. If that bothers you wait until you hear about Sylvia and Claud...

Want I want from a Fire Emblem 4 Echoes reboot is (I didn't play the game mind you)

  • A different artist. While I enjoyed the artist from Echoes. Having a different artist makes it feel like a different world.
  • Cameos from Thracia 776 to have a hints of a sequel to the game.
  • Some kind of memory prisms to clarity what happens between the time skip.
  • Have some of the substitutes characters to  be side characters.
  • Breaking down each chapter into acts to make it easier to have a break.
  • An in game wiki like in New Mystery, This game can be complicated with character relationships
  • And the ideas you have.

Genealogy of the Holy War is my least favorite FE (tied with Thracia.....yeah, i don't like Jugdral that much), but then thing is, i want to like it but the gameplay is abysmal. So for a remake, here's what i'm hoping they would do.

  1. Reduce the size of the maps but keep the layout the same. An FE4 remake can keep it's unique "seize multiple castles" thing, just on a smaller scale. It's been done before. Ch.27 in Hector's Mode of FE7 does this. In addition, making the maps smaller reduces the gap between mounted units and infantry units. That way, FE4 is no longer horse emblem and non-mounted units have a chance to shine. Even Arden would get his chance.
  2. Make the minimum promotion level not 20. In FE4, Staff-users suffered from taking way too long to promote. Having the promotion level be at 10 would help them.
  3. Bandits should not start near, or on top of the villages. Bandits shouldn't spawn in an area of the map you haven't accessed yet either *cough* Ch.2 *cough*.
  4. Replace the Skill system with Arts. Arts are better than Skills because you don't have to rely on RNG to activate them. This isn't a big deal though. I wouldn't mind Skills returning. I just prefer Arts.
  5. That thing where the enemy can switch weapons during the player phase, take that out. It's unfair that the enemy can switch weapons during the player phase but the player can't during the enemy phase.
  6. Make non-Holy Blood units not suck.
  7. Get rid of the Pawn Shop entirely. Why does it exist when literally every other game in the series had regular Trading?
  8. The Love System should be handled like Support Conversations that have appeared in most games. FE4 kinda had conversations, but they were pretty rare. Plus, having Support Conversations would make the romance between two characters easier to follow. We'd actually get to see them grow in their relationship.
  9. This isn't gameplay related but Sigurd could use some improvement. He's my least favorite Lord and I always found him to be boring in the game, yet, the Oosawa manga made Sigurd much, much more likable as a character. I'd like to see Sigurd's adaptation in the Oosawa manga implemented into a potential remake.

Besides this, there's basic stuff i'd like to see, such as the Turnwheel, fully animated cutscenes, full voice acting, etc. An interactive map of Jugdral as well, because that way, it can expand on the worldbuilding. SoV's world map had all these little pieces of info regarding various places of the world and i'd added to much to the game and i'd like to see it in Jugdral as well.

When i mean "interactive map" i mean, like a menu that you can access inside the home castle. You can look at places you've already been to and learn more about them. Because, with the way FE4 is structured, a traversal world map ain't gonna work.

  • Breaks during the chapters. It not news to anyone that the maps are huge and have a lot of empty space, so breaking them up with cut scenes and a camp or something will make the maps less overwhelming. Not particularly opposed to breaks in the action. Keep the big maps, though. Ain't FE4 without 'em.
  • Add the possibility to get ALL holy weapons. Make it so Lex's kids can inherit Helswath and Azel's kids can get Valflame, etc. No. The holy bloodlines are split between light and darkness, so it's kinda cheapened by getting all the weapons. Besides, no Gungnir without recruitable Arion or filthy retcons.
  • Return of the Turnwheel mechanic but obviously with some other lore-friendly gimmick No. You can already save every turn.
  • More lovers(support) conversations for all the characters Agreed.
  • Bonus chapters for other scenarios like Ares retaking Agustria In post-game content, I'd say.
  • Excellent orchestrations of the OST and new music Make the remixes good and I'll be happy.
  • Fully voice acted(or mostly like SoV) I'm fine with that. Can I have a voiced "ALVIS, YOU DASTARD" please?
  • Being able to pair Seliph and Julia without a glitch Neutral on the matter.
  • Adapt that sweet, sweet Eldigan arc from the Oosawa manga Haven't read it yet, no opinion.

Thoughts in bold. Otherwise, I'd rather things stay faithful to the original, so I'd be against stuff like new characters being retconned into the world or significant gameplay changes. Smoothing out the terrain-heavy sections and reducing the slog of Chapter 2 would be appreciated, however.

I don't agree to break down the map size or add more playable units to the game. I love the game because of these features.

Anyway, any feature this game has its unique compare to other games, is exactly why FE4 fans love it.

Since I love big map, this is what I suggest the remake should have, for example:

More enemy reinforcements in the Final Chapter, the since the Grandbell Empire rules all the continents, I would like to see reinforcements from Agustria, Verdane, Silesia come and attack you from all directions, not just Jungby and Thracia.

Which is obviously cannot be done if you break 1 big chapter to several smaller ones.

I don't think they'll change a whole lot.  They had to change some stuff in SoV for story purposes, and the cast was already pretty small, so they threw in a few extra characters.

If they go along the same path I hope they don't change a whole lot.  I'd like them to change a few things like the spirit forest but considering they didnt change any of the echoes maps i'm not optimistic.  I can see them adding in a few new weapons (new axes especially), a forging system (would be super broken in FE4 I think), and maybe a few plot important characters from Thracia like Linoan or Cyas would make cameos or become playable, although I don't think FE4 needs any more units.  If they add more axes it'd be nice to have another axe user in Gen 1 maybe.

I think the stat rings would be nerfed down to +3 or so though.  They weren't as centralizing as FE2 rings, but they've generally nerfed stuff in remakes of Fire Emblem games thus far.

No.

I wish eighteen hundred thousand curses upon you for this.

ArvisxDeidre? It's the only incest that is guaranteed to happen, is very very very bad since it was all engineered by the pure evil leader of a pure evil cult to create a pure evil empire led by a pure evil god for the sake of doing pure evil.

ClaudxSilvia? It's never outright said they're siblings, and even if they are it isn't like they truly know it- Silvia has no Brand.

LachesisxEldigan? No matter their strong feelings for each other, it can't actually happen and Kaga ultimately decided against it by inventing Grayne for Ares. He also opted against making Marita mothered by her father's half-aunt. Kaga knew when his incest tendencies went too far, and stopped himself.

ChulainnxAyra? We don't know how closely related they are, they should be at least 1st cousins, probably more 2nd cousins or something beyond it and they don't know it- that's fine.

AresxNanna? Give me the Japanese. I don't trust a fan translation written during a beer party. But even if it is- it's one instance.

LarceixShannan/Luchar/Lucharba? 1st half-cousin incest, not really that bad and in the latter case they weren't raised as family.

Edain childxBrigid child? Genetically than normal 1st cousins, but not terribly bad.

ArionxAltena? Arion seems to know Altena isn't his blood sister from the start, it thus makes things a bit different.

Honestly, Julia and Seliph shouldn't have even been compatible with each other at all- that 490 love points be damned. Why does it exist? Well Altena exists outside of the marriage pool, neither Julia nor Seliph do, and Sigurd and Ethlyn had fixed lovers. Even Seliph and Julia they did develop some romantic feelings for each other prior to the half-sibling revelation, they didn't maintain them thereafter; not that Seliph or Julia speak all that much if at all on the matter. If Princess Leila and Luke Skywalker got over each other, then it shouldn't take lightsaber or Tyrfing up either Julia or Seliph's posteriors for them to get over each other.

Those who harp on and on and on about incest in FE and Jugdral in particular do the series and Jugdral alike a massive disservice. You make FE out to be a giant inbred porno with no value whatsoever beyond brothers breaking in sisters. Much like that wretched talk of making characters the husbands and wives of your dies-as-a-virgin avatar in the more recent games, it has very little basis, if a kernel I must admit, in the games themselves and comprise not even .01% of the game's content, and on top of that is completely optional. Let me warn you now, do not continue in this way.

Now come Arvis. I have rage I still need to vent, and I want you to burn Verdane to the ground. Afterwards, we invade Gallia and do the same. And this time I will slaughter every beast that approaches us with my bare hands. Perhaps then I shall feel serenity again.

I love how similar to the originals the Fire Emblem remakes are. If they remake FE4, I hope they do the same thing. Now, FE4 is has plenty of flaws and is really broken, but it's still a very enjoyable game. If they managed to turn gaiden into a good game without changing much, I don't see why they wouldn't be able make a even better version of FE4, a game way better received than Gaiden, while staying faithful to the original.

NannaxLeif is canon, so I can see Nanna's supports changing.

Also, Briggid/Edain are identical twins, so their kids are genetically half-siblings. Just as bad as ArvisxDeirdre and JuliaxSeliph.

Eldigan also kinda lost his head too, thus preventing any possible LachesisxEldigan ship.

LachesisxEldigan was an actual subplot in the Oosawa manga adaptation tho. Even though, like in the game, it never came to pass because Eldigan lost his head, it was a lot more obvious in the manga than in the game.

I was assuming that scenario and trying to counter it. Otherwise they aren't related at all. This reminds me- how are Iuchar/Iucharba even close to Larcei? The game just says it, but doesn't explain how these oppressors are so close to the rebellious repressed- a few lines explaining this in a 4 Echoes would be nice.

I didn't know the exact genetic level of similarity. But oh well... I knew my critique had some holes in it. (And what is Hilda's background? my headcanon was she was one of Victor's illegitimates who Arvis kicked off the Velthomer payroll. This partly explains her cruelty- she was a little rich girl living the good life until Arvis ruined it for her. But that is just my headcanon, I don't think we're actually told).

This said, all the event dialogue the Ulir cousins have with each other is utterly generic- owing to the fact they can have substitutes no doubt (yet even when the subs can't have the convos they're generic). There is nothing that screams "yay incest!".

If you think about it those "wretched" aspects of the series are what draw in a lot of people. Need I remind you the shameless waifu-baiting and possibly even the siscon aspects of Fates are what drew in a big chunk of the fanbase to begin with? I don't think the incestual undertones(that are sometimes not so subtle) ruin the series, and acknowledging their existence doesn't remove any of the enjoyment you can get out of the games. Obviously it isn't a topic for everyone but it's also clear that more than a few people get a kick out of it.

If I really have to explain it, it's the shock value that makes EldiganxLachesis, ArvisxDeirdre, etc., interesting for some people and sets FE4 apart from the rest of the games(even though people still bring up thinks like Ephraim and Eirika). As for your warning: let me enjoy the games for what I like!

I'm stumped as to why people don't want all the holy weapons to be accessible. You aren't the first to mention it. What I was thinking is that after you kill Brian, Arvis, and Ishtar, one of your units can then use the holy weapon after that. And yeah, Arion should be recruitable, even if it's just for the final chapter.

On a side note, the Valkyrie Staff should have some other effect besides reviving units. If you play a no-deaths run, the Valkyrie Staff is just there to take up inventory space.

Oh thank god, all the luck in the world to this awesome guy for speaking my thoughts out loud in such a way! I'm SO FUCKING TIRED of this, all of this, and especially people getting all fired about Claud and Sylvia when to me that "revelation" was really just an incredibly sweet thing to say from a high ranking bishop to a kind of girl most would expect him to find outright disgusting.

I'd love for every Holy Weapon to be available to the player, but them being separated into "good holy weapons" and "wicked holy weapons" owing to the families they're affiliated to is quite charming and above everything else I want the original plot and setting to be respected: even if you were to get your hands on every holy weapon there are just no children in the original who can wield Thorhammer, Falaflame or Swanchika, how would you handle that? Giving Major holy blood to Johan and Johalva is a non-option because it would mean tampering with the original setting and one of the few laws that restrict major holy blood inheritance in a sensible way just for what is in my view an unneeded form of fanservice; giving major holy blood to Azel and Tiltyu is once again a non-option for the same reason. I mean, I would be okay if IS found their way around this, like adding Cyas to the game as a Falaflame user, but otherwise...

Well here's my take: You kill Arvis and you take Valflame from him but no one can use it. Let's say Arthur is Azel's son, and therefore has minor Vala blood. A little bit of lore twisting and now since Arthur would inherit Velthomer when Seliph wins, he magically gets the possibility to use Valflame. As for Brian I'm not sure how that could be handled, maybe if Ulster is the son then they can make Heroes be able to use axes like in the GBA titles. I just want to fight the 12 Deadlords with my own 12 Crusaders, you know?

"Loretwisting" and "repsect of the original setting" don't really pair well with each other. And it's not like being the Lord of Velthomer means one can use Falaflame, it's having major holy blood that lets a unit use the Holy Weapons. The only possibility I can see is that they could allow minor holy blood units to use the Holy Weapons with only half the buffs like some hacks do or without buffs whatsoever. That seems more acceptable to me.

I think just adding Cyan and making him playable would be a more interesting and lore friendly way of getting Falaflame .

Definitely.
  • Breaks during the chapters. It not news to anyone that the maps are huge and have a lot of empty space, so breaking them up with cut scenes and a camp or something will make the maps less overwhelming. I wouldn't mind some animated cutscenes and even a camp, but the huge maps should remain, as they're rather unique to FE4.
  • Add the possibility to get ALL holy weapons. Make it so Lex's kids can inherit Helswath and Azel's kids can get Valflame, etc. No. I think the enemies should have some of the Holy Weapons, to make the game more difficult and make the units less OP. Also, changes would have to be made to how holy blood works, or give major holy blood to certain characters, just so some characters could wield a holy weapon. If that's the only purpose, I rather not have that happen.
  • Return of the Turnwheel mechanic but obviously with some other lore-friendly gimmick. Not necessary, as saving is possible every turn.
  • More lovers(support) conversations for all the characters. Agreed
  • Bonus chapters for other scenarios like Ares retaking Agustria. Sure
  • Excellent orchestrations of the OST and new music. Definitely.
  • Fully voice acted(or mostly like SoV). Agreed.
  • Being able to pair Seliph and Julia without a glitch. No. I don't think getting them paired with a glitch was even intentional by the devs.  And the fact they're half siblings, which would prevent Nintendo from having them pair with each other (after all, the pairing isn't plot important like Arvis x Deirdre).
  • Adapt that sweet, sweet Eldigan arc from the Oosawa manga. I haven't read the manga, but I wouldn't mind it.

That's what I had in mind, anyone have other thoughts? Ideas? I want to know what other people expect for a game like this.

Well, what I want from FE4 Echoes is having everyone being able to double even without the Pursuit Skill. This way, the function of the Pursuit Skill can also be changed to something like, being able to double attack every battle despite the unit's speed being lower than the enemy's.

Maybe more Skills.

More interactions between Arvis and Azelle, as well as showing more of what their relationship with each other is like.

This right here. We need more character relationships and first hand insight into what happens with the bad guys too. Honestly the Oosawa manga does a phenomenal job with this so I hope a handful of the character personalities and relationships from that are carried over.

As my least favorite FE, I’d like a lot of things to be changed… Other than what's already been said…

-The game has really bad balance issues. If someone doesn't wield a holy weapon, is a not Master knight, and/or is not amount of class, they will be quickly outclassed by those who have one or more of those things. Either make other units more powerful, nerf holy weapons, or make it so that more characters have access to those things.

-Sub units need to be redone. They make up about half the cast, but the average player will never see them… Not to mention that even if you deliberately go out of your way to get them, they are difficult to get and not worth the effort. Put something in them that makes them worth getting, and make them easier to get for the players who do want to get them.

-Deidre's entire character arc needs to be reworked. Story wise, it makes a little sense. Gameplay wise, it's nonsensical. Gameplay wise, I feel like it doesn't make much sense to have a unit that only around for one chapter and then disappears. Bonus points if the player doesn't know what that's going to happen… It's a waste of both a unit and character development beyond her plot point… It gets even funnier if you choose to leave units near the spot where she was kidnapped, which is entirely possible…

What I would've liked instead was to see Deidre make it to the end of the generation (with appropriate boosts to her stats) and then have her plot point happen. It makes sense at that point, because the player’s army is effectively bringing her to Manfroy. Not to mention that she is weakened from what happens at the end of the first generation… She'd be very easy to snatch…

-I feel like Seliph should be tweaked a little. It doesn't feel like he's in too much danger in comparison to Leaf, or even his father. I may be biased because Leaf got his own game, and I haven't played in a while. However, I feel like the games show us more of Seliph being in danger or the consequences of trying to rebel… Instead the game just tells us in the backstory.

For example, Leaf gets thrown in the dungeon in the early game, has to hear about his own tactician dying, has confidence issues all throughout both games, loses his sister, and has an entire campaign fail.

Also, Sigurd loses a lot of friends and family, has to live on the run after his country declares him a traitor, and eventually dies for it.

Seliph… Has to live in hiding from the Empire (and we are not told much about how difficult that is), is an orphan (although he doesn't find that out until later and again, it's not really shown on screen unless the player really digs around for it), and eventually loses Yulia. That’s it… Of course, Yulia is his half-sister, but he doesn't learn that until later. And he gets her back perfectly fine (unless the player loses her in the final battle). Furthermore, Yulius is his half sibling, but he doesn't have much reaction to having to kill him… I feel like Seliph is an example of poor writing compared to the other two Lords in Jugdral…

To some extend.

I think the relation of Azelle and Arvis could be depicted as very similar to their manga relation, the comedic relation Dew has with Jamuka seems an ideal basis for their supports but for a lot of other characters I don't think the manga approach would work because for me it didn't really work in the manga either.

I'm particularly thinking of Reptor and Langobalt. The manga depicted them as pretty sympathetic and their relation with their kids ended on good terms. I think that would be out of character for them. Its a defining feature of Lex and Langobalt that they don't love each other and what makes Reptor so vile is that he does seem to love Tiltyu but still doesn't have any problem with killing her.
