Xenoblade Chronicles 2

(There will likely be spoilers for the original Xenoblade Chronicles and X. Do be warned.)

The latest trailer (extended trailer here) came out about a week ago, but it occurs to me that despite what I believe numerous Xenoblade lovers on this site, we don't have an official thread. So, here it is!

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the third (yes, third) game in the Xenoblade series, though aside from a few small references these games are largely separate from each other. 2 takes place in the world of Alrest - an eternal sea of clouds. The people live on the backs of numerous Titans, rather than just two in the original. From the official website, it appears that the Titans are dying, and Rex (not me; the main character of the game) must team with a "Blade" named Pyra to climb the World Tree in the center of the world and find Elysium, a paradise. But on the Titans are numerous companies and nations that will help them, or stand in their way:

Kingdom of Uraya - The starting region, I believe. They respect nature, and are likely akin to Bionis from the original.
Empire of Mor Ardain - A mechanical military nation that rivals Uraya. Similar to Mechonis, but it should be noted that people live in this nation, not Mechons. So, I'll assume that the war in this game is one of political or religious motivation, not survival of the species. The trailer also notes that Mor Ardain has a scarcity of resources, so that likely goes into it as well.
Imperial Providence of Gormott - A "plentiful land;" not much was shown aside from the fact that it is under Mor Ardain's control.
Indoline Praetorian - Very "futuristic" looking; it is a theocracy that controls the supply of "Blade Crystals." I'm getting large High Entia vibes from this place.
Argentum Trade Guild - Largely Nopon, they seek money and trade above all else, so they have managed to remain neutral in the conflicts for a good market (read: "exploiting wartime demands").
Torna - Mysterious and likely dangerous, they perform operations under the cloud sea to fulfill their goals. It should likely be noted that the narrator never says "nefarious" or "evil;" they are just secretive.

Also notable in the trailer is that there were eight flags shown at the beginning, but six groups described. So, there are likely more nations yet to be revealed.

The main conflict appears to be that everyone wants to get their hands on the "Aegis," a "Blade" who appears to be Pyra. Why? We don't know, but Pyra wishes for Rex to escort her to Elysium... also for an unknown reason.

Blades are people who can enhance the power of the Driver, a "front-line" fighter. So, the Driver will fight enemies head on, while the Blade will provide support and bonuses, such as healing HP or increasing attack. However, that is just the combat usage. I don't know if Blades have any story purpose, such as how Shulk's visions were an important aspect of the original story.

I've certainly missed mentioning some things, but what are your thoughts? Looking good? Not looking good? How will the story pan out? Will the gameplay be better or worse than the other games? How excited are you?

Geez I'm surprised I didn't  start this first.

I sn feeling EXTREME HYPE for this game!

The gameplay looks to be really fun. I really like the whole concept of blade and driver, and being 8 different factions means there is going to be A LOT to explore, which is one of my favorite parts of XC.

i am also super excited for the music. Can't wait for that to come outz

Should I feel sorry that I only got to play Xenoblade because of Chuggaaconroy Youtube Let's Plays, and have never played Xenogears, Xenosaga, or even Xenoblade X? I'd love to play Xenogears, but I don't have a PSX, my computer can't handle emulators, and I can't find any Xenogears playthroughs on Youtube that don't have commentary.

No, don't feel sorry. There good games, but If you can't play them, then you can't play them.

Right now my friend and I (my friend being a huge fan of all of Takahashi Tetsuya's "Xeno" games with Xenosaga III as their favorite game of all time) are choosing to be cautiously optimistic about the game.  It's the same attitude I had coming into Fates, and since I seem to be one of the few people who don't hate Fates at the moment, I'm gonna conclude it's a good attitude to have.

I have some misgivings in terms of some of the art and the voice acting (Rex especially) but overall it seems like it will be good.

While we don't have much to go off of in terms of speculation as of yet, I'm going to be constructing a "Plot Bingo Board" as we get closer to release.  So far I have "Pyra dies" and "Someone (probably Pyra) gets crucified"

I'd probably add a caveat of "but is brought back to life somehow" there. I'd also like to offer "Protagonist is a reincarnation/alter ego of a more powerful being" as a possible bingo square.

Finally, a dedicated Xenoblade 2 thread. This is my most wanted game of the year, even more than Super Mario Odyssey. I'm really liking what i've seen of the gameplay so far and the story seems interesting. The world looks beuatiful and i can't wait to explore it. And the music is so good. There are four Xenoblade 2 songs that you can listen to right now (just click on the spoiler tag on my signature for the links). Xenoblade music never disappoints and Xenoblade 2 will further prove why this series has the best music out of any Nintendo franchise. Anyway, i did a bit of analysis and i think i've identified who are protagonists (besides the ones we know) and antagonists are.

Spoiler

This image is from the special edition of the game. On the right side of the image, we have our confirmed playable characters and their Blades

  • Tora the Nopon and his Blade, Poppi α
  • Nia and her Blade, Dromarch.

However, in between Tora and Nia (and their Blades) are two characters, one of which is a Blade. I think we've seen them in the trailers but we don't know their names. However, there was this image released by Nintendo on their Twitter

DCNo2U4UwAArYhl.jpg

On the left, we see the two unnamed characters. And we know it's them because the girl (who is the Blade) has a little hat or something like that. Look at the previous image, and you'll see her with the little hat.

Tora and Poppi are missing from this image for some reason foreshadowing?????????

These two images lead me to believe that, besides Pyra, Dromarch, Poppi and the unknown Blade girl will be plot-relevant Blades. From the Gamescom footage, we know that Pyra can burn away certain objects to access new areas and such. In the first trailer, we see Nia riding Dromarch for better mobility. This leads me to believe that the signature Blades for each character can interact in some way with the world.

Anyway, back to the original image, if the characters on the right are our protagonists, then that means the ones on the left are our antagonists. The one we see at the bottom is the character who seems to be the personal guard of the prince of Mor Ardin. We've seen this character in trailers before (i can't tell if it's a guy or a girl).

Finally, there's the blonde-haired girl on the left side (maybe signifying she's an antagonist). Given that she's on the opposite side of Pyra, there's no doubt that these two are connected somehow. We actually know her name thanks to translations from the first trailer: Hikari, which is the Japanese word for light, which is most definitely her element (Pyra's Japanese name is Homura means flame, symbolizing her fire element).

Next, i'm not sure how many people noticed, but the game's definitely been getting a lot of polish. Compare the first trailer to the most recent one

Notice the details that have been added and how there's more color overall.

Also, there seems to be multiple artists working for this game. To show you, here are three Blades: Pyra, Finch, and Vasara

Spoiler

Here we have Pyra, designed by Masatsugu Saitō.

Then we have Finch (that bird Blade that was shown in the most recent trailer) designed by Kunihiko Tanaka

And here's Vasara designed by Yasushi Suzuki

Then there's this character, designed by Tetsuya Nomura

It's that mask guy from the trailer.

The best part about the whole Blade system is that it gives you so much freedom on how you want to build your characters. Each Blade has it's own Arts and there's a lot of Blades. People who love to get creative with their characters will really have a fun time with this. The Blades also basically ensure that no two playthroughs will be the same.

Don't worry about it. I played Xenoblade because of Chuggaaconroy (specifically, i played the New 3DS port, as it's the most accessible) and that's the only Xeno game i've played. I really want to play X but i don't have a Wii U. I'd gladly buy a Xenoblade Chronicles X Deluxe on the Switch.

Regarding the voice acting, from the trailers, it does sound like it's hit or miss, but i'm sure the voice acting will sound better once we actually play the game and get the context behind it. Apparently, Kid Icarus Uprising's voice acting sounded terrible in the trailesr but we all know that that game has one of the best voice acting ever.

That said, Rex's "TAKE THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS" is so bad, it's hilarious.

Given that the game has European voice acting, i would love it 10x more if each Titan's society had their own regional accents. That would be amazing and it kinda looks like that's their intention, given the latest trailer (though i'm not 100% sure).

I'm probably the only guy who legitimately played and 100% Xenoblade X in this entire thread.  I did finish the original Xenoblade.  It was good but I did feel people overpraised it but I did enjoy the combat a lot.  Xenoblade X surpassed the gameplay department in all levels and since Xenoblade 2 is taking advantage of the engine that made Xenoblade X's 5 year development, I hope this means more faster Xenoblade and Xenoblade X games in the future.

As for 2, I'm looking forward to the environments that we can explore and the some of the towns that are going to be available and I really hope they take note of the sidequests from Xenoblade X and amp them up in this game.

Having "finished*" Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X, I am cautiously optimistic for XC2. I know the environments and music are in excellent hands, but the playable characters thus far do not really resonate with me. I am also not completely sold on the updated combat system with the Blades and the switching. When I play the game itself, I may change my mind, but right now I prefer the traditional method. (I absolutely loved XCX's combat system, even though I mained swords and rarely used my rifle.)

* XC: At final boss, want to finish up the sidequests first. I hear this trivializes the final fight, but I rather "complete" the game in one go instead of doing another playthrough.
XCX: Finished main story, got my Ares 90, and have maybe 1-3 major sidequests left. I also need to get around to finishing up all the affinity missions, don't think I 100% that yet...

Yeah the two main characters' designs is not giving me a good first impression.  I mean yeah Xenosaga's Kosmos had a similiar thing going but the rest of the cast was quite tamed saved for some of the armors.  I quite loved the previous casts designs in previous Xeno games so to see the designs going into these weird skin fanservice showing again is kind of bleh to me.  The designs I've been enjoying the most are definitely the blade characters.  A lot of them are so good and yet the contrast between them and the two main characters is making it hard for me to swallow.

I while I dislike the look of Rex (and currently, his voice), I feel like his character may actually be okay going off of the trailer from the Nintendo Direct. Of course, he was presented to us by the Titan he lives on (Azurda, or "Gramps") which may give off a better impression, but Rex may actually go places.

As for Pyra, I'll admit she is aesthetically pleasing to look at, but I do question the fanservice design. I think the major point for me is her "torso armor." I was never really a fan of armor that covers most of the front but exposes the side and the back, so covering that up with a slight redesign may solve that for me.

I do like the designs of Nia and Tora though. It's just a shame Tora is stuck with Poppi α who I am not particular a fan of at this point in time.

Yeah, the Blade designs are definitely better than the main characters' designes. Not that the main characters look bad (they look pretty nice though Rex's boot things are dumb) but the Blade designs are just better. My favorite Blade so far is Finch.

Though i will say, i don't like how generic the Common Blades look. There's three types of Blades: Special, Rare, and Common. Special Blades are the story important ones like Pyra and Dromarch. Rare Blades are the rare ones you can get from Rare Core Crystals, like Finch and Vasara. Common Blades are everything else, and the ones you'll be getting most of the time, hence the "common" category. I get that Common Blades are supposed to be common, but at least give them some color variation. We've seen four Common Blades so far and they all look 90% the same, right down to the color scheme.

I have no opinion on Poppi α and that's because we haven't really seen her do anything other than fight. Compare that to Pyra, who we know is probably the most important Blade in the story, and Dromarch, who we know we can use to ride across the field (though whether that's at will or only in certain areas is a current mystery).

If my theory is correct, and the Special Blades can interact with the environment, then Poppi may be able to drill into cliffsides and rocks to get items and such. After all, she does give Tora a drill (which, on a related note, the concept of a Nopon wielding a drill is hilarious to me).

I really do have high hopes for this game.

The story seems to be going in a really cool direction, what with the many different factions in the world.

i remember speculating with my friend when we first saw this game about wether it was connected to XC chronologically, and if the sword Rex was holding was something of a replica Monado. We were both very wrong.

That sounds like a really cool idea. Maybe we can even go a step further and have that unlock secret areas in the game.

I wonder if dodge tanking will be as OP as it was in XC

I actually never played a Xenoblade Chronicles game before, but after seeing the Nintendo direct I think I really wanna give this one a try. I'm also shallow and wanted to try out Xenoblade Chronicles 1 after seeing shirtless Shulk in Smash Bros, because that's how I make decisions apparently. But yeah, I haven't yet because I haven't felt like throwing up $100+ dollars for it, I will eventually though (Path of Radiance was just a priority for me).

But anyway! I think this would be a good starting game to get into it, because I heard the last two were great, so if this isn't as good I don't have anything to compare it to. Yay trying new things!

Well currently, Xenoblade 1 is on Wii U as eshop 20 dollar title, it also got a physical restock recently at gamestop (well I saw some new copies in my local area) for the Wii so you can check that out there too.  The new3DS version is also an option if you ever plan to.

If you do have a Wii U get Xenoblade X immediately.  Definite must buy and own title imo.  I've put in over 2000 hours of the game and I'm still going to this day.  I haven't even stopped yet.  The postgame content is just amazing.

However keep in mind that Xenoblade is following as two seperate series now, Takahashi the director and creator has stated that this is the kind of direction they're going for now.  Xenoblade would be your traditional JRPG adventure game with a slight medieval final fantasy like story telling focused game.  While Xenoblade X is a scifi space opera drama with open world exploration and all about allowing the player to have fun and go out on your own adventure kind of game.  Personally I prefer the later but either way both games are amazing on their own and they shouldn't be compared to one and another.

As mentioned by the person above, you can get the original off of the Wii U eShop for 20 dollars and a restock is coming soon (though it's the first time i've heard of that). The New 3DS version is inferior to the original (less resolution) however, it's portable. On of the biggest reasons why i'm looking forward to XC2 is because it's on the Switch, so it's portable, meaning i can play it on the go. The New 3DS version of the original game also benefits from being portable. It's a long game after all, so having more chances to play it is always a good thing.

I would also like to watch or play Xenosaga of Xenogears, though yes, the same problems that you have have persisted. However, if you have a Wii U, you might consider getting the original of X. They are both really fun, but of course require a good investment of time and/or money, so it you're often busy then yeah, you might not want to get them.

Oh wow, cool analysis. My personal theory is that the main antagonists for the first ~80% of the game will be Mor Ardain with an occasional Torna thrown in. But it will end with (gasp) the Indoline Praetorian as the main villain, serving some dangerous world-destroying Titan, of whom Torna has secretly been trying to stop and destroy. Although, that does sound a bit too much like the original...

The voice acting... I'm actually OK with it. It's not perfect, no, but it works for its goals. My problem, however, is with the lines themselves. I feel it sounds like a poorly translated text of so. For instance, at one point in one of the trailers, I think Pyra says something like "I won't use this power, and I won't let you use it either!" And it never sounded good - the wording for the entire cast was always a bit off.

I thought of this as well. Mor Ardain and Torna do look to be the main antagonists. Though, from we've gathered from the trailer, it seems that most of the nations want the Aegis, who is likely Pyra, for one reason or another. So maybe most of the nations are antagonists. I can see the Argentum Trade Guild trying to capture Pyra, and sell her to any of the other nations in exchange for a lot of money. If what the original Xenoblade has taught me, it's to not assume who the true villains are. As for the rest of that theory, it does sound like the original, but i'm pretty sure we'll be getting some parallels to the original. Heck, Pyra's Blade looks like the Monado II, and i wouldn't be surprised if Rex's personality is similar to Shulk's. Heck, Rex and Shulk have similar jobs. Shulk scavenges for parts to use in his weapons research, while Rex is a scavenger, sailing around the cloud sea on the King of Red Lions Azurda and getting sunken treasure and the like.

Of course, we don't know for sure.

To be fair, we have no context for that line. What power is Pyra referring to? Who is she talking to? Once we actually get context behind the scene, i'm sure the voices will make more sense.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I'm still trying to grasp just how big this game is gonna be. We saw places of two of the Titans, Gromott and Uraya in the E3 and Gamescom gameplay streams, and those are just the tip of the iceberg for each Titan. We don't know exactly how big each Titan is but we know there's gonna be at least eight of them (because of the eight flags). And that's not counting the World Tree, which is it's own region probably. I get the feeling that this game is gonna be bigger than Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Speaking of the Titans, i think i found a central theme surrounding them: the seven deadly sins. The names of the Titans, specifically the Japanese names, are the Latin names of the seven deadly sins. I'll be putting them in the spoiler tag, because i know not everyone likes game analysis.

  • Kingdom of Uraya. Japanese name: Invidia Retsu ōkoku (The violent Kingdom of Invidia). Invidia is Latin for Envy.
  • Imperial Province of Gromott. Japanese name: Gūra Ryō (Gula Territory). Gula (or Gullia) is Latin for Gluttony.
  • Empire of Mor Ardain. Japanese name: Superubia Teikoku (Superbia Empire). Superbia is Latin for Pride.
  • Indoline Praetorium. Japanese name: Ākedia Hōōchō, (Acēdia Holy See/Episcopal Government). Acedia is Latin for Sloth.
  • Argentum Trade Guild. Japanese name: Avaritia shōkai, (Avaritia Company). Avaritia is Latin for Greed.

The Argentum Trade Guild's Japanese name being named after the deadly sin of greed makes sense, since they do seem like the greedy type (with that Nopon leader saying something about getting "mountains of cash" in the trailer). Looks like these Japanese names are on to something.

That's 5 of the 6 nations we know of. Torna is not on this list because i can't seem to find it's Japanese name. However, the trailer described Torna as an organization, not a nation. Eight flags. Seven Deadly Sins. Something tells me that Torna doesn't have it's own Titan. We know the Titans are dying. Maybe Torna's Titan was the first to go?

GameXplain should hire me for these analysis i've done.

Then there's this character, designed by Tetsuya Nomura

One, why is Nomura wasting his time here? Doesn't he have FF things to work on? And two, Masked AC Cloud reminds me too much of Yelv from XCX, not that I dislike Yelv, but I be making a few Yelv-spoilerific comments about this as I play. I'll also be asking where I can get my hands on Photon Saber, they were relatively underpowered in X, but I liked them.

I'll agree that Pyra could use some anti-fanservice touchups. Any chance she of all the Blades will be getting a couple costumes? Of course it'll be fanservicey a cat costume though, hopefully an Elma one would included though.

And I don't mind multiple artists if things maintain a degree of cohesiveness. Multiple composers worked well for XC.

That "Plot Bingo Board" thing someone said earlier, well I'll put down a "Will fight beings named after the Seven Deadly Sin demons" on the card. This means Lucifer, Mammon, Beelzebub, Satan, Belphegor, Asmodeus, and Leviathan.

To that card, I will add "Hikari and Pyra are "sisters"..." how should i finish that? "...from a project" or "...derived from the magical foundation/god of this world".

How the plot rolls I'll let it roll, my focus will be on the world and gameplay. Now, there is no chance of this, but I'd like it since we didn't get it in XCX, a cameo battle. I was thinking a "Face off", either Yaldaboth by itself, or a trio of Nemesis, Metal and Jade. No rhyme nor reason to it, just a good hidden cameo fight.

Which reminds me, somewhere a Telethia should be present in the game. If X had them, they have to return again, being a superboss is optional.

I can see the Special Blades (Pyra included) being able to change outfits but i'm not too sure on that. Wouldn't be surprised if only the Drivers can change outfits.

The real question is, will there be an achievement for running around a town in nothing but underwear?

Oooh, that'd be pretty nice. I'd like to see that too.

While we haven't seen them yet, i do think they have a good chance of appearing. There's no doubt that the Nopon are the unofficial mascots of the Xenoblade series. Wouldn't be surprised if Telethia are also the unofficial mascots of the series.

Now, whether Telethia will be relevant to the story or not is a different story.

I'll be honest I'm hyped for this game. I still need to go back and finish Xenoblade 1 before it comes out too.

Spoiler

As to where I'm at, all I'll say is I have gotten past Unfinished Battle, so a long ways to go.

Anyways I'm really liking the artstyle this game has going for it, though Xenoblade 1's is still better I think this one at least doesn't hurt the eyes as much as playing the wii version in 2017 does, the music so far has been amazing (shout out to battle activation), combat looks to be altered in a way that keeps it fresh, and so far story seems interesting. I have a few theories about the game but I won't post them as they more then likely contain spoilers. I hope this game lives up to the hype and the standard it's predecessor set. As Xenoblade 1 is a masterpiece, and though I haven't played X, it seems like it's fairly good.

Yeah, I am thinking that most of the nations will be against Rex and Pyra, though with Mor Ardain and possibly Torna as the "main" aggressors. As such, I'm presently re-thinking my theory, but I'm still putting my money on Torna being good guys and the Indoline Praetorian as villains.

(Oh, gosh; "Rex" even means "king." He and Azurda are totally the King of Red Lions and Link!)

But the seven deadly sins thing is really neat - especially as I am one who really enjoys studying them. Though, yeah, we're still missing wrath. The Torna theory of not being on a Titan is cool, though in the trailer the Argentum Trade Guild isn't stated to be a nation either; I mean, it is a guild, after all. (Fun fact: argentum is Latin for silver... not gold. Huh.)

The names invoking the sins might help with the story as well - Mor Ardain (pride) wants to show its might by conquering other nations, and you noted the Trade Guild (greed) which makes sense. Indol being sloth I think further connects it to the High Entia - they probably have the power to end the war and stop Mor Ardain's aggression, but simply don't care and would rather stay at peace (until they're attacked).

Telethia and Nopon are basically the mascots of Xenoblade now - with Nopon being the greedy helpful merchants and Telethia being super powerful monsters of destruction. I highly doubt one won't make a cameo, even if not in the story.

We're also missing Lust.

As for the Argentum Trade Guild, the difference between that and Torna is that the Argentum Trade Guild has it's identification in it's name just like the other nations (Kingdom of Uraya, Empire of Mor Ardain, etc) whereas Torna is just Torna. From the looks of it, the Argentum Trade Guild basically IS the nation, as in, they control it.

On a side note, the "Paretorium" in Indoline Praetorium is referring to the Roman Empire, specially, either in wartime, such as the general's tent or the war council, or political, such as the governor's residence. And the language of the Roman Empire......was Latin. Looks like this game will have a lot of Latin references.

Adding to this,

Spoiler

Uraya (Envy) may reflect on how Urayans are envious, maybe of Mor Ardain's military power, of Indol's control of Core Crystals, where all Blades are born from. Gormott (Gluttony) may refer to, not Gormottians not being gluttonous, but rather, they have a very abundant food supply (because of how abundant nature is there) that they just refuse to share with anyone else......making them a perfect target for the Empire of Mor Ardain to invade and conquer them. After all, Mor Ardainians are running out of resources, of which food is very important.

In regards to Blades changing outfits, I think that maybe plot important Blades like Pyra will change outfits as they get powered up (since I'm willing to bet that Pyra will probably get powered up once or twice in the story similar to how the Monado was in Xenoblade 1).  Though the question remains if her powering up would make her more or less covered...
