Favorite games by letter

So I was looking at my games list and noticed I've played and beaten at least one game that starts with every letter of the alphabet. Then thought it would be fun to pick out the best games of each letter and to see other people's lists. You don't have to limit yourself to games you explicitly beaten, and if you have no entries for a letter, just skip it with N/A. And I'll leave it to your discretion for further rules with your lists. For instance, I prefer to keep the word "The" in titles, such as The Legend of Zelda.

  • Asura's Wrath (PS3)
  • Bioshock (PS3)
  • Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)
  • Dead Space (360)
  • Earthbound (SNES)
  • Fallout: New Vegas (PC)
  • God of War (PS2)
  • Halo: Reach (360)
  • Ico (PS2)
  • Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (PS2)
  • Kirby's Adventure (NES)
  • Luigi's Mansion (GC)
  • Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
  • Neo Contra (PS2)
  • Odin Sphere (PS2)
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (GC)
  • Quiz & Dragons: Capcom Quiz Game (Capcom arcade collection)
  • Resident Evil (GC remake)
  • Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS)
  • Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)
  • VVVVVV (PC)
  • Wario World (GC)
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown (PC)
  • Yoshi's Story (N64)
  • Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link (NES)
  • 007: From Russia with Love

Edit: And another point for game titles that start with numbers or symbols

And as a bonus question: Which of these letters had the toughest competition for "favorite" in your list? For me it was D, F, and M.

I did a "favorite video game per release year that you've been alive"- so I have a huge list of things floating around. I think for A-Z I can manage pretty easily-

  • A: Ace Combat 4
  • B: Battle for Wesnoth
  • C: Creatures 2
  • D: Donkey Kong Country 2
  • E: Eye Toy Play 2
  • F: F-Zero X
  • G: Gauntlent
  • H: Halo Reach
  • I: Ikaruga
  • J: Just Cause 2
  • K: King's Quest
  • L: Lemmings
  • M: Mario Tennis
  • N: NBA Courtside 2 : Featuring Kobe Bryant
  • O: Oddworld: Abe's Exodus
  • P: Puyo Puyo
  • Q: Quake 3 Arena
  • R: Rayman 2
  • S: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
  • T: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
  • U: Unreal Tournament 2004
  • V: Vigilante 8
  • W: Worms Armageddon
  • X: XII
  • Y: Ys Chronicles
  • Z: Whichever Zelda is stylized "Zelda:subtitle" instead of "The legend of zelda: subtitle" otherwise Zombies Ate My Neighbors.

 Hard Letters-

S - incredibly tough between things like Super Metriod, Stephen's Sausage Roll, Smash TV, other Super Mario games, Super smash bros, etc.

M was pretty rough for the same reason, the mario spin offs, Metriod (the GC and GBA ones), Monaco, Majesty: the fantasy kingdom sim, MDK2, Metal Slug, and so on.

T is hard because of all the games that start with "The" RIP The Incredible Machine but also stuff like Twisted metal and Timesplitters 2

B is the only really "unexpected" hard choice- I've poured tons of time into  Battle for Wesnoth, Banjo Kazooie, Bombastic, Boom Blox, the Batman:Arkham games,  and the Burnout franchise.

Other Tough drops- in L, D, W, and P

Need category for games with Numbers as the first character in the title because 1943 Battle For Midway is too good

The only one spelled like that is Zelda 2!

And that's a good idea. I'll add that to the OP. Games that start with numbers or symbols.

I don't hate Zelda 2- because I see hack n slash platformers as being more "gamelike" in general than the normal zedla foruma games (2d or 3d), but on the other hand, I always end up comparing it to other hack n slash platform games, which beat it handliy due to it's lack of focus due to the overworld exploration, etc. I like it relative to later zelda games for being more of a game than they are, although I don't really consider it to be as much of an experience as later games.  As for "T" well no zelda game comes close to competing with Tony.  or even the runners up for T. I'm not especially loyal to it, I just find them all to be solid games as a group- I mostly hold them down because I really hate lazy puzzle design in certain zelda games and combat that is crippled due to inadequate/barely mobile enemies- a far cry from the two NES zelda enemies-

Not counting "the" as part of the title because who even does that anymore.

  • #: 1bit Heart
  • A: Azure Striker Gunvolt
  • B: Bayonetta
  • C: Catherine
  • D: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc
  • E: The Evil Within
  • F: Fallout: New Vegas

  • V: Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
  • W: The Wonderful 101
  • X: Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Y: Yakuza 4
  • Z: Zone of the Enders 2

Harder than hard mode letters were:

  • D (between Danganronpa, Devil May Cry 1, 3 + 4, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, Dead Rising, the Souls games, Dishonored 1 + 2 and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn)
  • F (any Fallout, a couple Fire Emblems, Final Fantasy V, VIII and IX, Fragile Dreams, and Furi)
  • R (most Resident Evil games, most Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, Ray Gigant, Radiant Historia, Rome: Total War and Roundabout)
  • S (the big one; Silent Hill 1 + 2, pretty much every Shin Megami Tensei game, Saints Row 2, both Story of Seasons games, Stardew Valley,  Super Robot Wars J, W + L, and Soul Nomad and the World Eaters)

Also, # and I are freeware games because I haven't played more than like three games I'd rank near a favorite between the two.

Ooo, interesting idea. Let's see if I have enough to fill all of them out! I'm ignoring the word "the", because I just see no point in counting it. I included the launch platform of each game, as well as any other consoles/handhelds/other devices I've played them on.

  • 100% Orange Juice
  • Analogue: A Hate Story (Steam)
  • Brandish: The Dark Revenant (PSP)
  • Cave Story (PC/3DS/Steam)
  • Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy (PSP)
  • Earthbound (SNES/Wii U)
  • Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem (DS)
  • Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R (technically PS2/Vita/Steam)
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed (Vita)
  • Immaterial and Missing Power (PC) (I don't know if Touhou is actually part of the title, but if it is then I'm ignoring it, because I like this game and I can't think of any other games that could start with I)
  • Jet Set Radio (Dreamcast/Vita)
  • Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1/Wii)
  • The Legend of Valkyrie (Arcade port to the PS1/PS3)
  • Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X (PSP)
  • Nicktoons: Attack of the Toybots (PS2)
  • The Oath in Felghana (PC/Steam/PSP) (technically the title starts with Ys, but I can't think of any other games I've played that start with O, and I couldn't decide between this or Ys I & II Chronicles + for Y, so I don't care)
  • Portal 2 (Steam)
  • QP Shooting - Dangerous!! (Steam)
  • Ristar (Genesis)
  • Shock Troopers (Neo Geo/PSP/Steam)
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (Wii U)
  • Umihara Kawase (SNES/Steam/Vita)
  • VVVVVV (PC I think?/3DS/Steam)
  • WarioWare, Inc. (GBA/3DS while I still had those Ambassador games)
  • Ys I & II Chronicles + (PSP/Steam)
  • Zoo Tycon (PC)

The hardest ones to choose were definitely B, C, F, K, S, and Y. B was really tough with BlazBlue and Banjo-Kazooie, but Brandish is just too good. Cave Story is my favorite game of all time, so it was technically an easy choice, but denying Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, Castle Crashers, and Crash Bandicoot 2 was still really hard. F wouldn't have been nearly as hard if I hadn't recently rediscovered F-Zero GX, which is a phenomenal game that's at least in my top 10; New Mystery just barely edged it out. K had competition with the Kirby and King of Fighters series, but again, Klonoa is just too good.

Making this showed me that there are so many great games that start with S! Shantae, Super Mario Bros. 3 and 64 and 3D World, Skullgirls, Sonic CD and Mania and Generations and 3 & Knuckles, Super Meat Boy, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage... S was definitely the hardest, by far. Y, on the other hand, was just hard because I love the Ys games as a whole, and picking just one is super hard for me (as should be demonstrated by my pick for O. This was fun though, and challenging for more than a few of them!

It's all those games that start with Super, including a good chunk of the Super Nintendo's "super" library. Plus shout outs to Street Fighter, Sonic,  Star Fox, every Star Wars game, Spyro, and recent indie hits Shovel Knight and Shantae. But for me S would be a Smash game, no question. Just gotta pick the one I have the least baggage with.

Fun idea.

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
Bayonetta
Chrono Trigger
Devil May Cry
Exile III
Final Fantasy Tactics
GoldenEye 007
Hyrule Warriors
The Incredible Machine
(empty set)
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Legend of Dragoon
Mega Man 3
New Super Mario Bros.
Ori and the Blind Forest
Phoenix Wright: Justice for All
Q*Bert
Rayman Legends
Super Mario Kart
Theatrythm Final Fantasy
Undertale
Valkyrie Profile
Wild Arms 4
Xenogears
... Yoshi's Island (technically starts with S, but whatever)
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

Strong letters:

F because of Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, and F-Zero (X/GX). FFX, Radiant Dawn, and Fates all get strong, strong honourable mentions here; these three and FFT are near the top of my favourite all-time games.

M because of various other Mega Man games, Mario Kart games, and Metroid Fusion.

S because of the Super Mario Bros. games, Super Metroid, and Suikoden (3, mostly). Nintendo has way too many games that start with this letter. Ironically New Super Mario Bros. gets on this list despite the fact I like about 5 other Mario games more than it, but all the rest start with S!

Weak letters:

E, I, O, Q - None of these are games I hold in particularly high regard; they largely win by default.

Someone else who has experienced Radiata Stories? I absolutely love the tongue-in-cheek humor and its characters. Still have my original PS2 disc. I danced between it and Rogue Galaxy for my letter "R" but decided on Rival Schools because of nostalgia.

I swear Level-5 made some great games; I thought about Ni No Kuni, Dark Cloud 2 and Dragon Quest VIII as well before replacing them.
