Which animation company should handle FE16's cutscenes?

Disney or Studio Ghibli

On a serious note, I've never really cared all that much about cutscenes in Fire Emblem, mostly because the story is told more through the dialogue anyway. That, and it tends to be erratic when they actually appear; You're almost pelted with them in the beginning of the story, and one is guaranteed at the end, but they tend to disappear around the middle part, to the point that I forget they exist.

Studio Trigger, Studio Khara, and Production I.G. Studio Trigger may be a stretch but Production I.G. is actually feasible. They did work on PoR and RD and have worked on some other Nintendo franchises before. They were involved with Pokemon Origins and produced one of the Pokemon movies. They also did some promo videos(?) or something of the sort for Kid Icarus Uprising. I'm a big fan of their work on Psycho Pass. They also worked on some other recognizable anime such as AoT, End of Evangelion, and Guilty Crown. They even worked on Xenoblade Chronicles as well. It might be something pretty different but it would be welcome. I would also love the return of Studio Khara, I really liked their work on Echoes SoV

I really hope it's 2D. That small 2D animation in Fates when Corrin turned into a dragon for the first time looked amazing and I think the games would benefit from ti way more than the 3D animations which always have something looking a big off about them. Also not 2D rotoscope over 3D like in SoV since it usually just ends up looking stiff.

I want Bones or Studio Trigger in charge of the cutscenes. I’m leaning to Bones however because I expect action and there’s no one better than them when it comes to that. I mean just look at their work with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Soul Eater.

Studio Orange. They recently did Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous.

The CGI is SoV was super jerky after how nice it looked in Fates/Awakening, so unless Khara can clean that up for the Switch version, they shouldn't come back.

I'm not sure, but if the game is fully in 3D with good graphics, then the cutscenes will probably be done with the same engine ?

I don't know if 3D games have an external company do the cutscenes parts (like with FE Warriors) exepted maybe the opening one.

If we see what we had lately with Fates and Heroes, I expect the same graphic level between the cutscenes and the actual game.

I really hope the company that handles Awakening/Fates/Heroes cutscenes make a return. They’re an absolute thrill to watch. I still get goosebumps watching Azura’s dancing cutscene. (Water porn anyone?)

Echoes’ cutscenes were good but they pale in comparison to the quality the previous 3DS games had. The characters’ emotions were on point, but lacked the fluidity and sense of weight the previous games had.

I think this would be cool. From what I've seen of LotL, it does an amazing job of CG while still making things look "anime". Something like that is clearly what the studios doing CG for Fire Emblem have been trying to do it, so getting a studio that has "perfected" the style would probably be amazing.

That is if IS wants to keep going with 3D CG. They could do traditional animation like Persona does. But that probably costs way more and even though I'm sure this next FE will have probably the biggest budget an FE has ever gotten, that might not be how they want to allocate it. CG is likely just a cheaper solution, so that might be what they continue with.

I agree that the actual animation might be a bit stiff, but I really like their use of colour in the Echoes cutscenes. The scenes themselves look absolutely beautiful when taken as still images.

Cartoon Saloon.

I watched Song of the Sea a few weeks ago and now that I know who this studio is I give this my full support brcause that was one of the most beautiful films I've seen.

As for JP CGI stiffness, I've understood it as a carryover from the techniques used in 2D animation. The visuals of JP animation having more detail is partly accomplished by fewer frames per second.  Good CGI isn't exactly cheaper/easier to produce than good 2D animation, but it's used as often as a means to cheat out of drawing verses just using the unique tools CGI can give.

Then you get instances like Berserk where the director was so excited about CGI using 3D models that he forgot basic cinematography and made a show that makes you more ill from the constantly spinning and panning camera and not because you're watching Berserk

Haha. I meant it as more of a joke (with the express purpose of hoping someone would know who I'm talking about), as the art style would be pretty unfitting for Fire Emblem, but still semi seriously, because it probably would be absolutely beautiful.

I think madhouse is pretty feasible as they were involved with some of the artwork in awakening so I guess it wouldn’t be too hard for IS to get them on board or heck toei would work as well their most recent CG anime project.

though I wouldn’t mind perriot either. I mean say what you will about Naruto’s animation quality but when perriot really want to they can pull off some really impressive animation.

I don't think Toei or Peirrot would be good options.

They look decent when they put effort towards major scenes, but even in those cases, their best rarely looks anywhere close to the best of some other studios. Most of the time Peirrot and Toei animation looks like dogshit on a hot day.

true but at least they're better than A1 but that's a discussion for another day. anyway I would also say something like kyoani but their art direction doesn't really suit FE though trigger would be nice change of pace.

Colorido is pretty spectacular, too.

I think much of it could come down to the character designer and if cutscenes are pre-rendered or in-engine. Kozaki's style was translated pretty amazingly well in both the pre-rendered scenes in Awakening/Fates, but also in-engine in Warriors. Wada's art was given similar care for PoR and RD. I would generally prefer in-engine so it stays a touch more consistent between cutscenes and dialogue, but 2D animation could be the way to go for top notch quality otherwise.

But, if Hidari returns, I really don't think her style would benefit from 2D animation, but I could feel that way from just how badly done I think the Khara scenes are. They made everything look so much flatter and less detailed as Hidari's art is chock full of soft shading and little details and texture, and they just used clean cel shading. Even IS's little battle models look better as they tried to replicate her unique style.

The models Khara used don't look terrible, just inferior to the art everywhere else in the game, and unless the budget is really high or Hidari's art is "cleaner" across the board, that's extra tricky to translate into 2D animation. At that point, though, you'd be better off bringing in a different artist.
