Logic behind Second Seal/Heart Seal Reclassing?

Recommended Posts

Let's speculate why the characters with fixed reclassing have those alternate classes.

All the Nohrian siblings have the base class of one of their siblings. (Elise has Camilla's Wyvern Rider, Leo has Elise's Troubadour, Camilla has Leo's Dark Mage, and Xander has Camilla's Wyvern Rider again)

Kellam can reclass to a Thief because nobody notices him, so he can sneak around.

Cordelia, said to be a perfectionist prodigy, can use every weapon type in the game with her alternate classes taken into account.

Odin can be a Samurai since it's the Fates equivalent of a Myrmidion, his base class in Awakening.

Similarly, Selena can reclass to a Pegasus Knight since her mother Cordelia is one in Awakening.

Ricken is a Chrom fanboy so his reclass options mirror Chrom.

Cherche has two healing classes because she was trained to use a staff.

Henry using the not so pleasant Berserker/Thief/Dark Mage classes fits well with his nature. Gangrel probably uses the same set because those classes used by Plegia a lot.

Since this particular form of reclassing is a feature which is exclusive to Awakening and Fates, it looks like this will be purely a Fateswakening discussion.

'Boro is easy to figure out; not only does the apothecary outfit match her color scheme, but she also aspires to be a merchant of sorts.  It doesn't matter if it's a tailored suit or an herbal concoction, Oboro is there to sell you a great product at a fine price.

Chrom/Lucina go for archer after witnessing the glorious finesse and combat skills showcased by everyone's favorite archest archer to grace Ylisse.  Lucina thinks that if she can find out how to launch the Falchion like a bow, she could defeat Grima regardless of if he's flying or not, and probably do more damage as well.  As for the cavalier line, they just want to imitate Sigurd because of how heated the stories of his combat prowess that they've heard get.

Severa has pegasus knight not because of her mother, but because she can't pick barbarian.  The goddamn savage that she is.

Tharja can become a knight because the armor apparently is really good at blocking out the sun.  And she goes for archer so that she can etch in assorted hexes and messages into the arrows and spread her terror that way.

Flora can become a mercenary because what we don't know is that the Ice Tribe is partly a mercenary nation, as the only way she could keep the tribe afloat is by doing some dirty work.  Felicia had a part in this as well, and the reason Felicia is so clumsy is because of a concussion she received while on the job, combined with peer-pressured consumption of alcoholic beverages for a time, so her fine motor functions are impaired.  And yes, I'm implying that they worked as mercenaries as children, and that Felicia was an underage drinker; after all, Midori is a character you can recruit in this game, so my wacko theory's not so far-fetched.

I haven't played Fates, but I know that Awakening was actually pretty good with this.

Cordelia has access to every weapon type in the game, and is considered an ace.

Both of Donnels classes can promote into a hero.

Kellam lack of presence makes him an excellent thief, but his desire to help people explains why he can become a priest. Plus, healers are best kept out of battle entirely, so his skill in stealth can be put to use there.

Ricken looks up to Chrom, and thus has his same reclassing options.

Although it's probably because Panne was planned to be a pegasus rider before it was changed to a wyvern rider, it makes sense that Yarne wouldn't be brave enough to ride a dragon, and thus can't inherit it from her alone.

Everyone who can reclass into a dark mage has some kind of dark past and/or thoughts/intentions. Robins is a spoiler (that everyone knows about), Miriel could be willing to explore dark magic "for science," Cordelia is clearly affected by her unrequited love for Chrom, Libra had an extremely harsh childhood, Tharja frequently uses curses, and Henry has an unhealthy interest in death. As for the child characters, all of them grew up in an apocalypse, but as for those who start with the class: Laurent had to survive on his one for 5 years in an unfamiliar land, and has feared going mad several times, Noire is clearly affected by her mother's curses and influence, and Sereva is a jerk grew up in her mothers shadow.

Time for Tvtropes.

Why on earth does Sumia have the knight class? It's the only class with a tripping animation! Whenever you try to use Luna or something to that effect as a knight or general with a lance, you will run past them and fall over. Not to mention, a Knight/General has high defense and they're good to protect weaker units; af asked about her free time, Sumia says she "makes sure everyone's safe" — this means, the Knight reclass option will allow her to protect others better, even with her own body/armor if needed!

  • Not to mention, Sumia didn't get her Pegasus until the chapter in which you can officially control her. Yet she was obviously a part of the Shepherds before then... It's entirely possible that she would have been a Knight instead.

Some of the Second Seal reclassing options may seem filler or out of the blue for the character in question, but some do make sense after learning of their background:

  • Why does Henry, a magic user, have Barbarian/Berserker as a reclass option? Because he's Ax-Crazy, geddit? (And the bad pun fits his character)
    • But Wait, There's More! Henry's supports with Ricken and the second Drama CD state that he had an Odd Friendship with Mustafa aka the boss of Chapter 10, who treated him like a second son of sorts. What was Mustafa's class? Berserker. It's not unlikely that Henry wanted to honor one of the people who treated him well in the Plegian military.
    • His other class option is Thief, which incidentally makes his class set the same as Gangrel's. Given that Henry used to be one his soldiers, it's unlikely to be a coincidence.
  • Why does the Wyvern Rider Cherche have the Troubadour and Cleric lines? She was originally training to be a cleric before she met Minerva. And she tamed minerva via, among other things, repeteadly whacking her with her staff.
  • Lon'qu is able to reclass as a Thief or a Wyvern Rider, the latter of which is pretty odd. However, he's originally from the western continent of Valm, where wyverns are much more common and raised for battle. The Thief line makes even more sense when you learned he grew up in the slums of Chon'sin.
  • Every character from Valm can reclass into Wyvern Rider: Virion, Cherche, Say'ri, Walhart and Yen'fay. Lon'qu also can, being one of only two pieces of evidence he might be from Chon'sin originally. The other is the apostrophes in his name and the name of his childhood friend Ke'ri.
    • Japanese does not have apostrophes, so this doesn't count. There's no evidence it's more than a choice by the localizing team.
  • One of Gregor's reclassing options is a Barbarian. In one of his supports, Lon'qu mentions that he once competed with Basilio for the title of West-Khan, but he was no match. Perhaps he learned something losing to a Warrior like Basilio and wants become as strong as him.
  • Olivia tells Lon'qu in their support that Basilio (who is like a father to her) talks often about him. In her efforts to be more useful to Basilio apart from being a dancer, having the option to reclass into a Myrmidon like Lon'qu seems like a good way to do it. Her growth rates are even similar to his!
    • This also makes it rather appropriate how Olivia uses swords even as a Dancer.
  • With how unnoticeable Kellam is, the Thief line being available to him is hilariously appropriate. He reveals that he was the most selfish among his siblings growing up, which also makes it fitting. Going unnoticed seems a weird trait for a knight, a class that is designed to stand in the way and draw fire from squishier units. But his reclassing options are Thief, a class renowned for their ability to sneak around (and, as an Assassin, gains the skill Pass at Lv. 15 which allows you to run right past enemy units) and Priest, a healer class which cannot attack and cannot take much punishment, whose top priority aside of healing is avoiding enemy attacks...
  • Ricken looks up to Chrom and sees him as a brother. His reclass options, as strange as they are for a Mage, are the Archer and Cavalier lines...which are the same as Chrom's.
  • Similarly, Sumia and Cordelia are childhood friends despite their opposite personalities. This is also reflected in their reclass options: the kind and gentle Sumia can be made a Priest (healer) or a Knight (strongly defensive unit), while the straightforward Cordelia can become a Dark Mage (offensive magic) or a Mercenary (balanced swordsman/woman).
    • Also of note with Cordelia's reclass options is the fact that she can use every weapon type in the game. She gets lances as a Pegasus Knight, Swords as a Mercenary, and tomes (including dark tomes) as a sorcerer. after promoting she rounds out with axes (Hero), bows (Bow Knight) and staves (Falcoknight). pretty fitting that someone hailed as a genius can use every weapon in the game (that's not class-locked).
  • Donnel's reclassing options are the fighter and mercenary classes, both of which allow him to become a hero. Pretty fitting for an underdog with fast stats growth. Donnel is your typical anime protagonist, going from zero to hero.
  • Nowi's reclassing is the same as Tiki's (Mage and Wyvern Rider), expliciting the former being the latter's Junior Counterpart. Plus, reclassing either Nowi or Tiki as a Wyvern Rider lets you have a dragon... who is riding another dragon.external_link.gif
  • Speaking of people who can reclass into Wyvern Riders: both Frederick and Sully have access to that class, despite neither of them having a connection to Valm (unlike Lon'qu, Virion, Say'ri, Cherche, Yen'fay and Walhart), any affinity for dragons (Nowi and Tiki are dragons themselves, and Panne can communicate with other animals), or any other flight-based classes (Aversa). I couldn't understand why those two even had that class...until I remembered that they both have supports with Virion, who is from the continent of Valm, with its large wyvern population. (And the Virion/Sully pairing is even fairly popular) It's a sort of Fridge Funny to imagine that Virion just up and decided to teach a couple of his friends how to ride dragons one fine day.
  • Tharja mentions in her S support with Frederick that Dark Mages require a certain level of mental instability in order to be good at their craft. Who are the specific people that can reclass to Dark Mage? All Plegians (including Noire), Miriel, Laurent, Libra, and your character. This may explain why characters like Ricken and Emmeryn cannot reclass to Dark Mage despite their impressive magic stats.
  • Gangrel cannot reclass to Wyvern Rider (a class common among Plegians) because he is afraid of heights.

Apologies for anything already mentioned. I just copy and pasted this.

Arthur wants to be nobility, and most cavaliers are nobles of some sort (Silas, Peri, and Xander). That's why he can become a cavalier.

Nyx views herself as irredeemable, so she becomes an Outlaw to reflect her thoughts of herself.

Azama is pretty dubious, hence he can become a merchant.

Kaze probably wants to serve Corrin in a more official capacity, so he can reclass into a Samurai to be seen more.

Flora looks more like Kilma than Felicia does. That's why she can be a Sorceror.

Leo has Troubadour because he chose to focus on magic more than swords or other physical weapons. He even seems to detest them to a degree.

Hana has Shrine Maiden because Sakura, a Shrine Maiden herself, is her best friend. Think built-in A+-support

Same with Effie and her Troubadour class, only it's Elise in her case.

Charlotte has Troubadour, because it can promote into Maid. And some men have Maid fetishes...

Peri has Dark Mage, because she is a deranged psychopath and it is implied that in the 3DS games at least, you need to be a little out of it to indulge in the dark arts.

The same reasoning can partly be applied to Camilla.

Elise has Wyvern Rider because she looks up to Camilla and wants to be like her.

Takumi has Spear Fighter for possibly the same reason Shiro does: both want to step out of Ryoma's shadow, so they decided to train with weapons that can overwhelm swords in a fight.

Oboro has Merchant because she comes from a family of merchants.

Kaden and Selkie have Diviner because Kitsune in mythology have a wide range of magical abilities.

Hinoka has Spear Fighter because she trains with Naginata, which you can also do without simultaneously riding a Pegasus.

Chrom has Archer and Cavalier because horseback riding and archery were common pass-times for nobility in the past.

Lissa has Troubadour because Maribelle, a Troubadour herself, is her best friend. Why she has Pegasus Knight, though, I don't know.

And that's all I can think of for the moment.

Orochi mentions collecting rare herbs in her Hayato support, so she can be an apothecary.

Kaze is devoted to his master Corrin, just like a Samurai.

Kagero is friends with Orochi, so she can be a diviner.

Gangrel is the ruler of Plegia, home of many dark mages, so he can be a Dark mage. His brutal personality means he can also be a barbarian.

Hayato is from a tribal area, so he can be a Oni Savage. Same thing with his daddy.

Fuga is shown to be very wise, so he's a Monk.

Shura used to be a ninja, so that's his reclass option. He's also a criminal, so he can become a Berserker, but he has a good heart, so he can be a Hero too.

Mozu is a good hunter, so she can be an archer.

Walhart obviously has Knight, because Conqueror is just a better Great Knight.

Anna has Mage because she can travel through dimensions at will, and is clairvoyant. Why is she clairvoyant? Because her having Archer was her foreseeing bow-toting sisters being playable in the future (FEW and Fates).

Benny has Fighter owing to his ferocious expression.

While I get things where a character has their Heart option as being the primary class as a friend, this restricts their Friendship Seal options and denies them access to another class. And doesn't it defeat the point of why the A+ rank exists in those cases? Elise only has Azura to turn to for something new, and Niles Arthur. Or they could have made A+ give the secondary class of a character if the class receiver's secondary is the same as the class giver's primary.
