I think maybe if RD hadn't butchered supports, then a lot more characterization would've come out.

How do you expect to have proper supports when characters can change armies? Take Ilyana for instance, she starts off with the Daein Liberation Army in Part 1, and then leaves to join Ike and his mission against Begnion in Part 3. Either she has no supports in Part 1 or no supports in Part 3.

PoR's system could've still worked, specially if you consider some supports in there had slight variations depending on certain factors.

Why can't she support people from both armies, specially since in Part 4 everyone comes together anyway? It's not like she magically forgot the Mercenaries from game 1 or spent time with the Liberation Army and felt nothing, right?

You don't get support bonuses if the person you're supporting with isn't present. Which would mean she'd be going through Part 3 without any supports.

What about those units with limited availability (Vika, Tormod, Muarim, Stefan, Pelleas, Volke, Bastian, Kurthnaga, Ena and Oliver)? After all, supports in PoR only open up after two compatible units are deployed on a certain number of chapters together, and with their limited availability, that's not really possible is it?

Ah yeah, true, I forgot that those games still had the limit of 5 Supports (only one rank A) per game.

But since we're talking "what ifs", she could simply have bonuses with people from Daein's army and then also have supports with the Greil Mercenaries. On part 4 everyone would be together. She would start P3 without any supports, but then again, so does almost everyone else too.

Then you can have cases like ElinciaxGeoffrey. In PoR, a single chapter together unlocks both C and B. Or was it B and A? The point is they only need two chapters to unlock the A support. So even Nasir and Gareth can have supports, even if they would be front-loaded since they'd only have 4-E-4 to unlock all three levels. Sephiran would be the only one left out; but at that point I'd think he can afford to go without them.
